- After driving a Ford Focus RS from London to Le Mans to join the Ford Performance team at the legendary 24 hour race, I'm rather taken by it as a car for all purposes. So... should I buy a Ford Focus RS?

Yes this is the same company that makes the Transit & KA but it also makes cars like the GT.
The Focus RS is the best hot hatch on the market, that includes the RS3 & A45 for all you badge snobs out there.

The Focus RS is THE car of the moment so it's probably in Tims interest to buy a car that will generate a lot of views.
The only other car that is getting the attention the RS receiving is the BMW M2, he already owns the GT4 so why would he go German again?

I think a Focus RS would be one of the best cars to buy to "daily drive" and to also have fun in.

I have a Focus ST, which has the same interior with different Recaro's. I've always had two complaints with the design of the Focus. The interior looks/feels cheap. Cheap materials are expected for the segment that the car is in, but they could have done a better job with those materials and made it look a little better. I feel like most car manufacturers could take some lessons on how to do a proper interior from the e46/e39 generation of BMW's. The second is the way the tail lights extend up the rear quarter panel. Something about that has always bothered me.
they invested the money in performance not the interior, amd performance wise its hard to beat.

A45 AMG costs way too much for what that car is. Sure it's "faster", but the difference is incredibly minute, and would not be noticeable in real life application. The golf R has a wonderful interior, however it is rather "boring" for a hot hatch when compared to the RS. It's more focused on the comfort than performance. When choosing between the golf R and the focus RS, you're choosing between a car that's more comfortable vs a car that's faster and more fun.

Definitely, I'm biased as I've ordered one, but it has 5 doors, an OK sized boot, 4WD, drive modes all be it slightly gimmicky, but mine cost me £34,580. Name me another car that ticks all the box's and does it as well as the Focus RS, holds is a value like the RS badge always has and does it for that price! If the speed isn't quite where you'd want it save £8.5k compared to the RS3/A45AMG and bolt the Mountune MP kit on to it when it's released, retaining warranty and I'm fairly confident to say no super hatch would match and Mountune RS for the money, not one!

Audi S3 for around 35k 4.5 0-60 and 155Mph. It's not as much a drivers car but a great all round daily driver

C yeah I completely agree, two friends have them one on a 61 plate and one on a 15 plate so both models of S3 and they are brilliant, but given the choice, I went with the RS, so much more character and I believe a better all round driving experience, particularly in the 'fun factor'. And you'll always have the fear of an RS3 pulling up at the lights next to you and knowing that's what you could of had in an S3 🙈 where as the RS holds its own with one!

Yes! It's one hell of an awesome car, and you can actually use a lot of the performance it has to offer on the road, unlike supercars.

Can't wait too see what cars are coming shmee,I absolutely love the RS but I've always loved any car with an RS badge on it my dad had an escort cosworth when I was a kid and an escort RS turbo which my brother still has in his garage to this day,we get it out every now and then when it's sunny and it puts a massive smile on everytime.

I think this would be a great daily, very capable of handling camera gear. I think the Golf R interior is better, but the Focus RS has the performance and trick drive chain. If I had Schmee's garage of supercars, the R has some appeal as the daily mule, since neither the R or RS comes close to say the Long Tail.
I bought my Mk3 Focus almost 5 years ago now and it has worked wonderfully as a daily driver. Great fuel economy, fun to drive, ample room for people and cargo, no problems, and maintenance is a breeze. If you have the opportunity to get your hands on an RS I'd definitely take it as it's a wonderful platform and the RS is something truly special.
Love the vid as always... and yes, buy one - no need to risk all the others on the street / store runs. I say do it!

It's a low-cost, all-weather, practical hatch that's simultaneously unbelievably fun on switchbacks -- far more fun on said roads than any car of it's ilk as any right to be.
Considering your rather pricey stable it'd probably be a worthwhile investment (just in terms of deferred depreciation on your other vehicles) that you could hoon the shit out of.
You're quite cautious with your stable -- as you should be. With the RS there isn't that price-anxiety, that milage-anxiety, that 'oh-fuck-what-oh-god-no!'-anxiety.

but yeah Focus RS is a nice car albeit it doesn't seem to me like the best car for the purpose described by Tim... The interior is still far off of what you get in, say, a Golf R and that Sync 2 system is a pain to use. Also, manual gearbox is great fun but again it might not be the best type of gearbox for the purpose, especially since Tim has the GT4 for shifting gears himself.
I would personally wait for the facelifted RS3 - that car should get loads of new technologies not available for the Focus, much better interior and the new aluminium 5-cyl engine which sounds great (in fact this is a car I am considering myself). RS3 might not be as fun as the Focus, but its definitely better for the purpose, especially since Tim has other cars for fun driving.

I bought one! 4 weeks into it and I really enjoy driving this baby Beast! Always finding an excuse to go out and drive it lol. One issue, dang fuel tank is only 12.4 gallons! I got use to my F150 that has a 24 gallon tank. Stay safe everyone!
Tim, I have the Focus RS and it is epic! I ordered one whilst living overseas without even seeing one at a show, came back to the UK for a week, took delivery and went house hunting for a week. It was awesome. Plus my family didn't mind riding in it too (our BMW Touring is on order). Buy one, have care free fun and enjoy!
You're getting to the point you won't have time to enjoy all your cars. I'd stick with what you have & have coming.

I think you should definitely buy this fun hothatch Shmee. If you do decide to buy one, just imagine (without sacrificing performance) how care free you could go about things, not having to choose only 'safe enough' parking to park your car, or worry whether someone will scratch, or god forgive, dent your Porsche. Looks great this Focus.
I have the RS and the ST, they are very practical and good for daily use with so much power, it will be a good experience to own one of these.

The clutch is also weird as anything on them. There's about 1 inch of comfortable space vs the focus ST/RS which seems significantly more functional and enjoyable.
I really enjoyed the srt caliber. good room for the family. it was very unrefined and rough, but very aggressive.

A lot of your viewers seem to dislike Ford, I'm not sure why but oh well... I think it would be a good investment, it's a turbo do anything machine. I saw in your video to Ikea with the FF that you had to park far away in the middle of nowhere but that shouldn't be an issue with a focus! You can park this car on the street to pop into a store or restaurant and not worry about anything happening to one of your other cars and afterwards, if you so please, you can go hooning on the track! At the end of the day it's your money, but I like Ford's current performance lineup very much and it'd be cool to see you in an RS badged vehicle!

The first time I sat in the Recaro seats of my new Focus RS the driving position felt spot on. Now three weeks later I feel even more at home in the driver's seat; my six foot stature puts my eye line right in the vertical centre of the windshield. I am very happy with my purchase. It was however the more recent reviewers who seemed hell bent on amplifying whatever niggles they could find that had me worried. I contemplated cancelling my order of what could be a bone-shaking ride with an embarrassingly wide turning-circle. Fortunately my concerns amounted to nought. My wife as passenger approves of the pliant stable ride at speed on bumpy 'B' roads. At slow speed she can text OK but remarks it's not as smooth as my Mondeo - but does have the same satisfactory turning circle as my Mondeo.
Painted in standard white with silver alloy wheels the car appeals to friends in my age group who agree it looks quite discreet though not boring (which some refer to as subtle)
My race-car driving friends are most impressed, in fact staggered by its cornering prowess in wet and dry conditions.

Regarding your point about being able to park it anywhere. It is a thought that will disappear quite quickly. These cars are top of thieves shopping lists. Having owned a MK1 for many years, I was always concerned with the crowds that gathered around it when I left it parked up for any period of time. Unfortunately one day I woke up to find it missing from outside my house...... It's all to common a problem with RS' of all generations.
Without a doubt, currently looking into them at the minute to get my name on the waiting list

A lot of people seem to have an issue with it being a Ford. For the money, I'd say it is unbeatable. Of course there are better cars (for a lot more money), but the question Shmee is asking is should he get one. Yes he should.
Why? Because it ticks all the boxes he needs ticking, and Stealth Grey looks great. Oh, and there are very few of them.
Just one issue... Waiting list is long unless you can pull some strings. I am 4 months in and desperate for delivery :)

Shmee just get one :) I would use this as a daily driver all the time ! I did multiple drives over 650Km with them got out and was fiiiiineee.
Just as a bonus I also tested it on winter tires during snowy conditions it was EPIC !
Buy one, bought a Mondeo XR5 years ago now, 2008 model, the Focus/Mondeo are very very well made, gorgeous to look at and drive.

i do not know how it works in the UK but here in the States "fruity" (min 04:14) is never an adjective we would consider using in relationship to describing a proper sports sedan like the Ford RS.

I have the Focus SE and I love it. The RS must be amazing and I would really like to get one someday. To me there is nothing like a nice hot hatch for everyday usage.

Shmee love your videos! I just bought my first car a couple weeks ago... I love my Mk7 R!!! I was looking at a RS, but it's a year waiting list in the states (well California) and I needed a new car for my daily driver. Just wondering if you have driven a Mk7 R?
I owned the prototype for the rs, the T230 built by B&M in 2000. Have to say it was a pretty cool car to own. Very light and loads of understeer. I would love to own a more modern one to see how much the car and technology added to it has changed the car.
At the price of the RS Schmee would NOT have to sell any of his supercars...Absolutely brilliant car! And, not only yes, but HELL YES! you should buy it Tim! I currently have an ST but definitely next car will be the RS..and I'm 60yrs old!

I say go for it. It looks pretty cool and sounds awesome. For daily tasks it seems like it would be fun getting around in. If you do get it, I'd like to see the race and drift modes in action for a video.
Same interior and setup in ST. Sat in it at motor trend and standing at 6'-1" and the seat all the way back my legs are bent -- I don't fit. It's uncomfortable
Everyone is hating on even the IDEA of a Ford Focus RS being a Shmeemobile, but keep in mind that his practical car is a FERRARI FF! Yes, it is spacious but it's still a Ferrari that might get the occasional stare that gets a bit old after awhile. Another idea for a new vehicle should maybe be an SUV if not a Focus or whatever these other two secret cars Tim is picking up may be.
plus the FF is a two door so maybe getting in and out when theres passengers in the back seats is a pain
Definitely. Those new Focus' are absolutely gorgeous, and that RS (in Nitrous Blue especially) is literally my dream car - unreal.

Go for it, I'm lucky enough to be delivering the new rs to dealers at the moment. unfortunately they're in transport mode but still sound great. nitro blue has a silver fleck in it, great in the sunshine. silver multi spoke alloys look best.

Looks great, sounds great, power is great, but it's just a pretty Focus. Can't justify the price tag!
Your current cars are over £100k, this will be a better everyday driver than the FF during winter and it's obvious that you enjoy driving this car. As an everyday driver you got the space and ppl capacity as you mentioned for long journeys. I do see this car having its place in your life and getting lots of drive time both in the city and at rally circuits. I see great vlog potential with this car off road. Oh and lastly once you are tired of it, this will be easy to resell.
im actually looking into a hot hatch for my first car but of course not a super hot hatch like this. i have heard that the ford parts have smaller security factors in them meaning they dont last as long in terms of milage compared to their german counterparts. im still not sure between the polo gti, fiesta st and alpha mito
BUY! Very complete car, all round. Although i don´t like the interiors. As a machine is like the FF but with a smaller engine on one side but with the freedom of parking the car wherever you want with a minimum risk and less worries! Nice nice choice.

Well to answer your question Shmee:
- Is it fast? - Yes
- Is it practical? - Yes
- Is it comfy? - (from what I could understand it is) so: Yes
- Fuel range? - Seems to be quite good
- costs? - € 40-45k, so pretty decent
- Does it look good? - Hell yeah (even though that's personal taste but I love how it looks)
- Is Blue available as a colour? - Yes (should have started with that one I think :D)
I think it ticks a lot of boxes, I'd say go for it. It's a fun car that you can daily drive without having to worry too much about messing up a carbon fibre panel or anything. + Mileage won't be an issue anymore.
I see that you use Sony action cams for recording. What models are those?
I actually prefer this colour over the other colours, as with RS's (owned 8) over the years and the colour options that are less desirable or let's say not as common become rarer and hold their value better in 10/15 years down the line.
As a hot hatch owner myself (2016 GTI w/ Performance Package), DEFINITELY buy one!!
Just be sure to get the blue and the SUNROOF!!

Buy it so I can live vicariously through your ownership adventures. I want to know what the car is like to live with, have serviced, and whether or not it is reliable (especially that fancy AWD system). So, yes definitely buy one. The whole world is watching.

@shmee150 Active city stop automatically brakes the car if there is any obstacle in front of it while driving under 50km/h. Engine start/stop is named Start/Stop :)
In this category, I would choose a Golf R if I had enough money for that.
I'd like to see you buy one, just to see if the special factor of it lasts over a length of time or if it just starts to feel like a normal focus

Definitely buy it, I still daily drive my 02 SVT Focus. I live in the U.S. but I always prefer to bang a 6 speed manual around the streets unlike the new Euro trend of flappy paddle shifting.
hey tim! i think it would be a great choice! all the guys in the comments think a rs6 as daily driver is good but i think the rs is a great choice its cheaper than the rs6 or rs7 and is just a great al round car like you said in the video!

If your long trips to friends and family take you through the A and B roads of, say, Wales or Scotland, and given the typical weather, a four wheel drive performance car would be best. A narrow, short wheelbase and short overhangs also sensible. I suspect that an RS or WRX SDI, RS3 GolfR would be the quickest and safest, and posssibly most fun.
You should definitely get the RS, alot of people are slating it because they don't understand it and think it's just a focus with more hp.

The GT4 Lucco is obviously a faster more high end car but no one would feel comfortable to man handle it when winter comes like you can with an RS
Honestly I cant recall exact bhp stats but for resale value alone, and perhaps quality, an A45 Amg would be such a smart car to add to the fleet, granted its on the boundary of again being too nice to leave it parked anywhere ect
