I Tuned My Focus RS at MOUNTUNE!

- The long awaited upgrades to my Focus RS have started! I've taken the ecoBeast along to Mountune to get started with the FPM375 package, boosting power from 350PS to 375PS and torque from 470Nm to 510Nm. The best thing is that Mountune work directly with Ford and as such it is fully covered by warranty through the Ford dealer network.
As well as the FPM375, there is also the M380 package but that is not fully warrantied through Ford, but I did use the opportunity after taking a look around the workshop to take Mountune's demo car for a little drive. I'm not going to lie, the axle-back exhaust system has me tempted as the next modification!

Anonnymouse Hacker Maybe we have different definitions of boy racer. To me it's a 17-20 year old doing laps of his local town in a Corsa C with an Irmischer exhaust or a Fiesta Zetec S or something. A Focus RS costs around £30,000 and would be impossible for a boy racer to insure never mind afford to buy.

Tom Shaw At age 17 with little to no credit history and most likely a low paying job either part time in a shop while you study or as an apprentice or something? There is a reason you don't see teenagers driving cars like this. You'd have a nightmare getting an insurance quote in the first place, never mind being able to afford it!
Adam. I'm 18 and I've got friends the same age with new 135i BMW's, Golf R's and Mini Cooper JCW's all on pretty low paying jobs, personally I couldn't justify so my MK6 Golf will do for now but at least it's bought and paid for

Needs an exhaust, but probably voids the warranty?
(Milltek makes a great exhaust for the RS)

As far as I'm aware, if you modify your car, then make a warranty claim, they can only knock you back if they can prove the modification had something to do with it. So if you modify the exhaust, and your electric seat malfunctions.....then they have no reason to not honor your warranty.

+Kaushlendra Singh an exhaust would not void his warranty, especially if he did an axle back or catback. There's a chance if he messed with the cats and tuned it, but 100% will not affect his warranty with a catback

375hp is actually quite a lot for what is basically still a 'small' hatchback car.
Ford is definately the king of hot hatches at the moment.

90% of the gain is from re-mapping the ECU, intake and exhaust is just for noise
amcluesent Mire like 98%. He should tested itcwithe the remapping and then tested with the cold air intake.
Having been part of the Focus RS tuning scene for 5 years, I would partially disagree. Cat back is just noise, but intake and downpipes are essential for higher states of tune.
Omg that red GT40 is a mk.3 road car, those are freakishly rare (only 7 were made). I believe that one was on display at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015.

That noise when you back off is awful, I'm not a fan and I think it sound a bit chavvy. I realise it's just my opinion and everyone has different thoughts. Do you need to have the blow off valve?

Automotive Mike wish Gm will offer it for their factory turbo cars. Like the malibu with 1.5L and 2.0L . Only offer is springs.
Not even a custom dyno tune? All their profit comes from that generic tune.... Also, that 380 package is the best they currently have? The car has been out for a good while now...
A Vong exactly and in my opinion it's a small gain compared to German cars. My own 1.9 diesel made extra 40bhp
Yeah 25PS is weak for an intake and tune, a proper dyno tune could make almost twice that much. Pretty impressive for a small diesel, must have a lot of torque.
It's because of the warranty. This particular tune was developed w/ Ford Performance (and retains full powertrain warranty by Ford), so naturally it's very conservative compared to typical aftermarket tunes and leaves a lot of power on the table.
A Vong torque went up from 232 ft lbs to 319ft lbs :)

Well in Australia we have Walkinshaw for Holdens and they cover small packages (basic intake/exhaust/tune) to large packages (cam/supercharger/exhaust/tune).
Their drive train warranty is a bunch of hogwash.
So if the Mountune is warrantied by Ford, themselves, that means you are essentially getting the original tune of the car, right? lol. Ford just dumbed it down to 350 instead of 375.

all these people bitching about 25 hp for $900 is rediculous. a waste! sure he could've gotten more out of the car by having it professionally tuned instead of an off the shelf tune. he wanted to keep his warranty and this allows him to do that while making the car a bit more fun to drive. anybody who says a 25 hp/TQ increase is unnoticeable and it's all in his head is a fool.
She definitely needs a turbo back exhaust :) With a nice resonator and a good muffler, would sound epic.

Shmee, Mountune USA does not have a warranty package, none the less, it does make your car go fast!

err no not as fast, its still less horsepower, and heavier.

the low figure increase on paper doesn't take into account the psychological impact we humans give ourselves with these upgrades. we convince ourselves things are much better than, in reality they actually are. manufacturers know this and take advantage of it.

Dyno mode requires additional coding to get it to work decently on a dyno, and we decided not to do so.

finally!! yes shmee upgrade for the RS, please do get the exhaust system and intercooler installed for your RS, makes such a difference to the focus RS, as a friend off mine has the new RS with these added made a huge difference to sound a d power delivery. I've got a full Mountune exhaust and intercooler and induction kit added along with a engine map on my ST made a huge difference to that car. I know there different gen cars but still Mountune know what there doing when it comes to ford performance. sweet video!!! keep it up

There are a lot of different options. Not sure yet.
Get the full package with mountune. I've got a mk6 fiesta with the full MR200 package and it's second to none, literally transforms the car. I've had milltek and mountune exhaust setups and mountune wins all day, also warranty >>

i'm not a fan of the mk3 rs tbh.The mk3 will always win when it comes to road presence.Maybe if this came in a 2 door option that would be different,but naaaaah mk2 ftw
The Focus RS with a big turbo upgrade on a stock engine, Ive seen 483 WHP on the dyno. So we need a review of that!

I hope you run as high as you can for better boost and avoiding those dangerous "knocks" that can occur from cheap Gas...

As soon as my RS ,which I'm due to collect Monday, is run in, then I'll be heading to Mountune HQ as well. They are a good bunch and Fred in particularly there always has plenty of time for anyone. When I got my Fiesta ST MP215'd I was fortunate enough to get a tour of the workshop as well. Had an Arrows F1 car there that day plus Mat Jackson's BTCC Focus 👍
@shmee150 PLEASE! Stop saying 'mode' after every time you talk about normal, comfort, race, track etc....everyone knows wot you mean if you just say "I'll put it into sport'......cheers!

+Shmee150 I would suggest getting the Denso ITV22 1-step colder spark plugs (stock ones are poorly gapped), short throw shifter, and the Air/OIl Baffle as well (there are issues with the engines drinking more oil than normal due to direct injection and this helps alleviate that a bit).

I like the idea of more civilized normal mode and less artificial sport mode, but seems like I am paying for something other then HP which kinda sucks....feels more like paying for fixing ford mistakes
Hi. Great review. Whilst I enjoyed your Mountune review, I noticed a clicking sound from the indicator whenever you activated the indicator. My RS makes the same click, it was very evident in the cabin. Is this something you’ve noticed, if so, how common is this? Cheers.
If the exhaust happens, why don't you go 380 directly without Ford's warranty sooner or later? Mountune FMIC and Downpipe...exhaust go Milltek or Magnaflow for good sound!
I wish Cosworth was still the engineering firm that Ford used. Nothing wrong with Mountune its just 'Ford Performance by Mountune' on the car isn't as badass as COSWORTH.
Don't mean to be picky, actually - yes I do :-) GT40's first turned up at Le Mans in 1965 but all cars DNF'd. Then obviously came back and won in '66.

I wish VW would offer an upgrade for the Golf R with a warranty, I'd upgrade in a heartbeat but I still have warranty till June 2018 and I'm weary of coughing up for DSG or engine issues

Google the coolant/head-gasket issue..... these things are going to take a massive Dump in value if Ford don't get it together. Mine failed at 21k and was bone stock (requiring a new engine) so expect that number to be lower on a tuned car.
Shmee so I'm looking at the Mercedes A45 and a Focus RS what made you choose to Focus RS over the A45 I live in Wisconsin and I need something whole wheel drive for all year round what's your best advice since you have the RS
I gave a thumbs up, but also think the exhaust kit is unnecessary. What you should do though imo is move that new ford performance badge at the back to the other side to be under the RS-badge, like on the full-enchilada white one! Looks better..

So while watching fords series of the development of the RS. They talked about having to put a smaller intercooler on the RS. I'm paraphrasing but what they said was that the charge was too cool. I know that if the intercooler is too large you could have a drop in boost pressure. If this is indeed a problem, to cool the charge down too much and one of you know why that is. please enlighten me.
Remaps are fucking awesome! Got an APR remap on my VW passat went from 150 -> 200 hp and like +80 tq as well, why would you not?
So I got a focus RS, just have the roush intake. Is the chip worth it? What’s the performance distance like in terms of pull? I’m very disappointed with the G’s on acceleration in this car

The Mountune exhaust is a very good shout. my friend had a mk7.5 Fiesta ST with the MP215 and exhaust upgrade from Mountune and it was brilliant. Exhaust makes it really nice.

I don't know, the fully done white RS does NOT sound very good. Frankly the stock exhaust sounds more pleasant, when it is in sport mode. From the outside at least

i just love MK I ford escorts. that is so cool that they had one there. i'll be honest, i didnt know much about them before Fast Five, and i'm a bit embarrassed to say i learned anything about a far from a F&F movie, but i've been obsessed with those escorts ever since.
is that an K&N filter ?? you know that you have to clean it every 30.000 km with a special cleaning set. But i think mountune already told you;)
If you want a real exhaust that's crazy loud then speak to KMS Motorsport! They now do a valved system too. Say Nick with the Polo sent you 😃

Do you have to do everything so properly with the factory recommended tuners. I want to see like Gary's tuning wack a huge turbo, front mount etc and wind the boost up see what happens
I think you should put a gloss black wrap on the roof so it will appear to be tied in to the windshield glass and be a continuous piece. just an idea. I sell Ford and you picked the best body color, the pearl effect is amazing.
