Sleep Training made easy with the Ferber Method

  • Sleep training made easy with the Ferber Method!
First and foremost, This method is not for everyone, if it causes parents too much stress or anxiety you do not have to do it. The goal of the method is to teach the child to self sooth with reminders that “mommy and daddy are always here.” It is not meant to just let the child cry it out, or to be cruel. Use your best judgement, no one knows your child better than you.
With that said, Almost all parents of young infants are in need of more sleep.
In this video, we REVIEW a popular sleep training method, the Ferber Method. The Ferber Method teaches babies to self-soothe by allowing the child to cry for a predetermined amount of time before receiving brief comfort from the parents to remind the child they are not alone. Overtime these intervals slowly increase.
We discuss the reasons why sleep training is beneficial for the health of both the infant and the family unit.
Sleep training will ultimately lead to better quality, consistent sleep for your child which is necessary for proper infant growth and development. And adequate sleep in adults is linked to lower levels of anxiety, stress and proper weight management.
We also review why the best age to sleep train a baby is between 4-6 months of age, when infants are capable of self soothing but before they can sit up.
Check out our video on sleep training using the Ferber Method!

Did this with both my kids. My daughter was a hard nut to crack but by 12-15 months she was sleeping 10 hours just fine. Now she's 3 y 8 m and is still a great sleeper. My son is now 8 months and I went from co sleeping and waking every 2-4 hours for feeding to sleeping alone in his crib for 11 hours in just 2 days with this method. The first night was painfully horrible. The second night he seems to understand a little better. The third night it was as if he discovered how wonderfully glorious a good, long peaceful sleep is. I set him in his crib, he makes himself comfortable and goes to sleep. I am so relieved. I wake up the next morning ready to be the best parent I can be. 10000% needed. Naysayers just don't know better 💯

I just tried the "no cry" method and it made my baby worse. It was to stay in the room with her, but to her it was like 'why are you here but not interacting with me'. so I switched the method I was using mid way during a sleep session and did this and my baby went down after the third check in. And she wasn't crying as hard either. Each baby is different and I can already tell my baby likes this one more.

Omg the no cry method kinda sucks, at least for my baby. I'm going to try this method and hope for the best. But I have a question, what if after the 3rd check in, or even a 4th or 5th, the baby is still crying heavily?...I'm worried that I might give in after a while. Like how how many check ins should do?...😢 I'm running on little to no sleep here..

My husband and I we’re desperate so we started this method 3 weeks ago with our 8 month old baby
The first 2 nights were very hard, but the third night she cried just a little bit. Since the fourth night she is been waking up once. She doesn’t sleep the 10-12 hours in a row but at least she is not waking up every 2 hours as she used to do.
Every night since we started the training I put her in the crib and she doesn’t cry and in about 10-15 min she finally falls a sleep.
My husband and I were skeptical about this method but in our experience it worked out.

I’m honestly so so shocked. I already notice a huge difference in my 1 year old son. Let me just say a few things before anyone thinks I’m jumping the fence here lol:
My son is FULLY breastfed. All throughout the day and all throughout the night. He wakes up about 4-6 times a night to breastfeed and throughout the day he is always following me around and BEGGING at my knees for a feed about every 1-2 hours. My milk production has kept up with his needs of breast milk.
This method however has calmed him down about bedtime. After 2 times of doing the 10 minute intervals he’s quieted down quite a bit and has gone to sleep on his very own for the first time. Im IN LOVE with this method. Thanks so much for this helpful video!!!

Hi there. Thank you for this video. A few quick questions: 1. If the baby is crying because of gripe or gas, do we pick the baby up or not to relieve them? 2. When we go in for the 2 or so minutes to let the baby know we are around, do we stay until the baby has calmed down or do we only stay for a couple of minutes and leave whether the baby has calmed down or not?

Hiscock led one of the few long-term studies on the topic. It's a randomized controlled trial - the gold standard in medical science - with more than 200 families. Blogs and parenting books often cite the study as "proof" that the cry-it-out method doesn't harm children. But if you look closely, you quickly see that the study doesn't actually test "cry it out." Instead, it tests two other gentler methods, including the camping out method.

All I know is that my husband and I have barely slept in months and the consequences of that is our health going down hill, health which we need to look after children, and also our tempers/irritability levels have went up causing us both to become very snappy and impatient with our 3 year old who is at an age where he struggles to regulate emotions. Right now, psychologically, he is much more likely to be impacted by our sleep deprived personalities over a prolonged time than our 6 month old is by having to do a bit of crying for a few nights. So I think we really will have to try this...although we are in the same room as the baby still so not sure how we'll to make it work.

Right?? Otherwise this is a great video and I was going to show it to my grandparents to get them on board but I think that error would throw them off.

The only thing I don't agree with is not breastfeeding in the middle of the night. Formula is heavier and doesn't need a middle of the night feed but breastfeeding needs an extra feed. Once they are eating three meals a day and snacks it is less crucial but still encouraged by breastfeeding specialists

Can i put her to bed at 20, use the ferber method, and at 22 can i feed her in her sleep? Because i think 20 to 5 or 6 am is a long time with no food. The second question? Can i change her at night? For example now at about 2 in the morning, she usualy starts to move in here sleep, i change her and the she is still. The third question, can i use a pacefire or the hole purpuse is for her to sude herself without any outside help. And the final question, my baby is very tempermental and when she starts crying she goes into a frenzy and she starts shaking if we dont pick here up, is it posible that we could harm her if we try this method?

Here is my question: let's say bedtime is at 7:45PM, so for the night wakings, do we repeat these same tips for a full 12 hour stretch until 7:45AM? Or is there a point (let's say after the 10 hour mark), that I should nurse her? Or even if she sleeps until let's say 6:30AM, do I do the same routine until 7:45AM or do I start our day at 6:30 or nurse her and put her back down?
I think I have the bedtime routine down, but it is the early mornings that I am unsure/nervous about.
    Thanks in advance! ~Ashley

Ashley Allen Hi! Thanks for watching! I’m glad it was helpful. Repeat the same steps for every nighttime wakening! A reasonable wake up time for infants is 6am. Most babies wake between 6-7 am . You should aim for a minimum of 10.5-11 hrs at night ( 12 hrs would be ideal). Decide on what your wake time for the day will be, and when you go into to nurse her, you are up for the day. Do not nurse her during your 10.5-11hr sleep window. Hopefully that makes sense :)

You stated to keep checking in until the baby’s falls asleep.. well what happens if the baby doesn’t fall asleep? Do you let the baby cry all night long and keep checking in until sunrise? At what point do the subsequent check ins should stop and know that the Ferber method is not working?
I tried the Ferber method for 3 consecutive nights and my baby cried for 3.5+ hours until I gave in because apparently we’re supposed to “stop the check ins when the baby falls asleep”.

How long to you continue the process of leaving and coming back before you pick the baby up and try again later? One hour, two hours or until they just finally fall asleep?

Thank you for the video. May I have a question please? My baby will not stop crying when I try to calm him down like patting, shushing, even picking him. He won't settle and keeps crying till I give him a bottle for comfort. What should I do in that situation?

Hi! I’m wondering if your advice would change for an older baby I.e 11 months old who stands up in her crib if we leave the room. Does this mean she isn’t tired enough yet? Do I help her see the bed ? Lay her down if standing? She won’t sit on her own and continue crying staring at the door for rescue.

Any advice for sleep training an adoptive baby? We have a 10 month old that has lived with us for almost 2 months. We have used sleep time as bonding time through rocking, etc. But that has caused him to be unable to sleep without being in my arms, including naps at daycare, so we need to do something differently

Always change a dialer if it needs changing. No sleeping through the night worths diaoer rash that could really make a baby uncomfortable an uncooperative further on anyways.

Thank you for sabering this. I have a 3 month old and my husband and I are thinking about sleep training out baby at 4 months in her crib. She takes all her naps on her crib unless we’re on the go. I know doctors don’t recommend babies to get out of parents room until 6 months. Is it safe to sleep train in their own room since 4 months?

What do you do when baby tolls on their tummy and cannot roll back ? Do you go in and place them back? My baby does this a lot and I don’t know how it will affect the sleep training.
Also - baby doesn’t eat enough during the day ( maybe 14 oz-17 oz)so he needs 2-3 night feeds or he ll wake up every 1 h . What do you recommend?

Help!! My 5 month old wakes every 30min to an hour ALL night! I’m trying Ferber but my baby usually falls back asleep on his own after less than 5min of crying each time, but how do I get him to stop waking up every 30min. I only go in twice to feed him and the rest of the night I let him self sooth but it’s still constant wakings! What do I do?!

Love the video and am very excited to start once my son turns 4 mo. 2 quick questions that I haven’t seen answers to in the comments yet: 1. Do I absolutely have to stop night feedings or could I still feed once during the night, then put baby down awake and do Ferber again? Or do you recommend never feeding at night?
    2. He’s sleeping in a SNOO in our room right now but we want to transition him to his crib in his room (door connections our bedroom) and sleep train at the same time ideally. Cold turkey. Would you recommend? THX so much, you guys are super sweet and reassuring!

I think it’s confusing for babies if sometimes you feed them when they wake up and sometimes you don’t. I would recommend stopping night feeds. And i would do naps in the crib for a few days before you sleep train to get him acquainted with the crib and then do the sleep training

  • @Rodanguirus

So what if the check-ins do nothing to calm the baby? Do you still stick to the time table? So say I let my son cry for 3 minutes, go in to pat him and talk to him for 1-2 minutes, and he's screaming through all of that. Do I leave for 5 minutes at that point?

We have been on your method almost a month strong and it’s been amazing thank you so much. But I have a question. Our son goes down for bed between 7-7:30. He takes at least 4 naps per day. He’s been waking up 50/50 at either 5 am or 6 am. If he goes til 6 am the sunlight begins and we pick him up, so 6 am has been ideal! But lately he’s waking up at 5 am and seems done and getting upset. Is this just our wake up time now or is there anything we can do better to keep him at the 6 am sweet spot?

    • @babiesandbones7116
      @babiesandbones7116  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

AAron Smith so glad this is helping!! We need to teach him that 5 am is too early. With out girls, I just leave them until 6 am. A few times they would get really upset but they caught on pretty quick. Even if the baby is quietly playing with his toes in the dark and awake, it’s still restful. I would do your best not to go into the room until 6 am when you want your day to start!

Ok we understand the concept of sleep training but is there a point where the crying becomes so hysterical where you have to stop and intervene? We tried this method but after the first soothing our baby started getting even more hysterical after we left her again.

What are you suppose to do in the middle of the night when your baby is crying for hours and the check-ins aren’t helping? I’ve been up to 4:00 am listing to my little one cry and doing timed check-ins. There’s a point where it’s so late and he’s cried for 2-3 hours that it’s just too much.

@Laritas World you let him cio? I'm so scared to do that he looks like he's in pain crying for so long it breaks my heart. what did u do to make yourself okay? like can u explain the routine u did for it or to put him down and when u came back . im so scared to do it im crying already

    • @LaritasWorld
      @LaritasWorld ปีที่แล้ว

@@rcg224 I first started with checking in 2,5,10,15,20 mins. When I noticed that was not working. I stopped checking in so often and timed 15 minutes from initial time of putting in crib. If he was still crying after 15 mins I’d take him out and reset. Start over check diaper, feed/nurse, cuddles, read a book or let him do some tummy time. When I saw signs of him being sleepy again we’d try again. It’s not easy at all and it breaks my heart still hearing him cry but it helps your mental health tremendously!

I have a question, we are moving in soon future, my baby is 4,5m old, and I wanna sleep train him. Should i do it already at our old place, or should I wait that we move, wait for him to get used to the new place and than start sleep training. He will be about 6months old than… is that too old for Ferbers method? 🙏🏽
I would very much appreciate your answer 🙏🏽

I have a boy who is 8 months now. He still wakes up 3-4 times at night and nap twice for 30-40 min (2 hrs if I sleep with him n feed him) a day 😔😞 I always wanted to do sleep training but it scares the hell out of me since my baby doesn’t stop crying if I try him to comfort even for a day (let alone three weeks). I have tried to comfort him without feeding him since he doesn’t need to be feed in the middle of the night but he will wake up otherwise. We have tried him couple of days but he wakes up and stayed for 11/2 hours or more. And as parents we are scared of not making him sleep enough… it’s so frustrating and kinda confused 🫤 cuz I hear kids his age sleep through the night and naps for 2 hours twice … As you said he gets up, sit and even stand on his bed n play or cry in the middle of the night. Any suggestions???? Thanks 🙏🏽

How do you go from doing night feeds straight to this method though.. doesn't baby cry because she's hungry? Would I need to increase any feeds before bedtime to ensure she's eating enough? A little worried cause baby was born at a low birth weight and we're still at a low percentile.
