This video really didn’t touch on “why” people believe this. I’d like to forward my theory. Having engaged with many flat-earthers I have found some commonalities in all of those with whom I have spoken. All of them share a misunderstanding of core concepts of science. I don’t believe that is the key as many people share that and have the capacity to realize that principles that have been proven are true whether you personally master them or not. The other aspect that they all seem to share is that they are people with a self-image that is honestly above them while living a life that they see as beneath them. My theory is that as long as one clings to an idea that they are a member of a select few that “can see the truth” and are “too smart and open-minded to be brainwashed” it gives them an escape from the idea that perhaps they are not living up to their full potential. That perhaps their life is much smaller than it could be.
Ugh. It's like you're describing my mother. And I get the brunt of it since me becoming wealthy and sharing it with her seems to be her only hope of improving her life.

"Taking a survey" is something that only happens in our mind. In reality, we are just pressing lead onto a piece of paper, so perhaps it would not be unwarranted
Here are five undeniable scientific facts that make flat earth theory an impossible model. 1. Size of the sun observed in the sky: When observed the sun takes up the same “degrees of space” in the observable sky. This is only possible for a very large object being very far away. In all flat earth theories the sun is a small object moving relatively close to earth shining a spotlight of “day time” upon the surface of the earth. The relatively observed ”degrees of space” taken up by the sun should start as very small at sun rise, be observed to be 3x-5x times larger in the sky at Noon (based on theorized size of the sun and distance from the earth’s surface proposed in the various versions of flat earth models). The sun would then get smaller and smaller in the sky as it approaches sunset. 2. The pattern of the tides. The double low and high tide patterns as seen on earth are only possible if the moon is rotating around a spherical earth. No math models in any flat earth theory can explain the observed tide cycle. 3. Sky Rotation changing. From time lapse studies, we know from the observable sky at night what appears to be a sky rotating counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. This is only possible on a rotating globe. In fact in flat earth models, the sun and northern star (Polaris) should ALWAYS be visible at night. 4. Shadow angles at Noon. Put two tall sticks in the ground 100 yards apart. Watch what happens at Noon. In a flat earth model there should be a time when the shadows cast by the sticks are pointing in opposite directions as the small relatively close sun passes over head. This doesn’t occur the shadows are cast at always the same angle of projection. This is only possible with a globe rotating to reveal a very large very far away sun. 5. Sundials move “clockwise” north of the equator. Sundials move “counter clockwise” south of the equator. This cannot happen on a flat earth with a small sun flying through the sky.
This assumes you're qrguing with a rational person playing by the same rules as us (logic, science, reality...) Here, I'll pretend to be one of them for a moment and show how easy it is to refute all of your well-thought-out, perfectly-explained, accurate arguments: "nuh-uh"

I remember watching a documentary not that long ago that followed a group of flat earthers who set out to confirm that the Earth was flat, and basically, after every experiment that proved them wrong they simply changed the narrative to suit the results. In a nutshell, they were wrong and could not prove the Earth was flat.
@@Hkizzie Flat earth has nothing to do with religion, that's a modern idea. Besides, you can definitively, scientifically prove the shape of the earth, and it was first done thousands of years ago. You can't show any evidence that directly disproves the existence of any deity. You can explain the mechanism behind certain phenomena attributed to deities, but you can't prove or disprove if a deity was responsible for it happening. In fact, scientists for thousands of years viewed science not as a way of replacing or disproving God, but of understanding how He operates, and when you understand how He does what He does, you can better understand why He does it

I read a fascinating comment by a psychologist who has a policy of refusing to treat any patient that claims the earth is flat: he has found that they usually have underlying mental health issues and symptoms that need psychiatric care and perhaps medication. He therefore refers those prospective patients to a higher level medical professional. While this is not a causation situation, there is correlation between the firmly held belief in a flat earth belief and symptoms of larger problems.

Even worse is that they're now trying to find ways to force the gyroscope to show a flat earth and they don't realize how biasedly faulty that logic is. It's like me trying to prove gravity doesn't exist and after dropping rocks over and over i then let go of a helium balloon and act like i proved my point.
@@barryomahony4983 Don't understimate flat earthers confirmation bias and special pleading. Almost a decade ago, I discovered online that there were people who believed the Earth was flat. I began arguing with them. I tried to understand what made them believe what they believe and thought of ways to debunk their beliefs in indisputable ways. Here are some examples: -Flat earthers said that Antarctica surrounded the Earth, was comprised of 75-150 foot tall ice walls that could not be traversed, and if you somehow did manage to traverse the wall machine-gun-carrying NASA guards would turn you away. I really thought to even think this was truly hilarious. Do these people even realize that you can just book a trip to Antarctica and go there yourself to see that none of this is true? I mean... let's go! Let's go in person and see that none of this is true in reality. See for yourself that there are no continuous tall ice walls and no NASA guards. I'm guessing that flat earthers don't have much money because none took me up on the offer -They were so convinced that the whole global concept was a means of controlling the populous. They somehow merged the globalist "New World Order", which is really about people capitalizing on a unified world government, whereby the word global doesn't refer to the shape of the planet, but the encapsulation of all governments of the world. They don't seem to understand this distinction. Further, they then use MK-Ultra and merge that into their unhinged beliefs for some reason. Then, they claim this is all because of the Rothschilds and Rockerfellers, etc. Then, I asked them a couple of questions: 1) How is it that these people or governments are going to somehow control me more or less just because of the shape of the planet? I mean, if the Earth is round or flat, from a government perspective... my life doesn't change in either case. From a controlling me perspective, nothing changes. My life from a governing perspective isn't affected by the shape of the planet. They of course had no answer for this and merely resorted to ad hominem attacks about how clueless I was and how they felt sorry for me.... even though they are the ones who couldn't answer the simplest of questions 2) Why? Why would anybody require the Earth being round in my mind, or the populous in general? What is the end game? What's it all about? The answer? Seriously... the answer was: so the government could get your money. THAT'S IT! That is all they had! So, I informed them that the government ALREADY has our money they collect in the form of taxes and that they already give many billions a year to NASA, out of a $4 trillion sum in federal revenue a year, and they don't need my understanding or permission to give NASA money because they already have my money and can spend it however Congress decides to do so in their budget. Me believing the world is some shape has literally no effect on anything with regard to them taking my money and giving it to NASA. Again, they had no response to this. So, they cannot even come up with a plausible reason that they can effectively explain in any legitimate fashion that even begins to provide a motive for their make-believe claims. Add-on: No lie, this one Australian guy was really smug about his flat earth positions and attempted to execute a live experiment on the spot on video that "proved" for sure just how the Earth simply cannot be a globe. The experiment? He had a deflated soccer ball and he used his garden hose to spray water on it to show that the water fell off and didn't stick to the ball! HAHAHAHAHA! Seriously! That was it!!! He is completely scientifically brainless! He didn't even consider for a second that the gravity of the Earth, due to its much larger mass than the ball, would overpower any sort of gravitational effects a tiny little ball could even hope to produce. This guy is all flat earthers. Just stupid and wrong.
Now we are seeing the "extraterrestrials" and UFO narrative unfold. This would not be possible if people believed in the firmament of God. Our entire world is God's creation. The Bible says this, "The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder, and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them. For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie, in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness." 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 Don't believe it if you want but this world is passing away.
You can literally watch how flat earth works as an entity atm. A few pro flat earth people have accepted a free trip to perform the final experiment, is there 24 hour sun in Antarctica? As I write this the priests have already banned these once flat earth loyalists, labelled them as shills and plants and are scrambling to have the script of a second sun ready to dispute their evidence. It's amusing for several reasons. It really shows what lengths the high priests need to go to keep their miniscule income coming in from the grift. Rather than accept any form of science they need to insert their own science (if you can even call it that) to explain something that then becomes even more outlandish than it was to begin with.

Do not forget every person who climbed a tall mountain. If the Earth was flat with north geological pole being in the center, visible terrain would not line up with maps (curving northward more than it should according to spherical maps), and they would see the Sun at night (it would have to be higher than all mountains, thus be visible from them).

On the map it looked like they made a hard left and flew twice the distance as LA would be. We went to a store. Found a globe, used my lanyard to plot the closest distance from the two points on the map. It almost went over the southern tip of Alaska. I watched the Flat Earth drain out of his brain in real time.
Yeah, that's why aviators and navigators use a special map called a Mercator map which makes the landmasses and such look bigger the closer to the poles one gets because the Earth isn't flat! They use it to be able to accurately navigate a course.

@Yehudah Wayne "You only need theories for things you can’t see or experience in reality!" Like the theory that the earth is surrounded by an ice wall?
I've found that most flat earthers I have spoken with stems from a deep distrust of the government. Majority of them believed in the globe, but it was something the government did that led them to begin expecting the opposite to be true. For example: your video exposing Japan's refusal to acknowledge their actions in WW2, when a japanese person finds out the truth, they become disillusioned. This can lead them to questioning everything they had ever been taught by government. Flat earther's, from my experience, have become disillusioned by government lies (example: WMD's etc.), and at some point, they fight everything the government tells them. Honestly, once I figured out it was a reaction, or a symptom if you will, it gave me a lot more patience. "I am not upset that you lied to me, I am upset that from now on I can't believe you" - neitzsche
The dangerous thing is that those who profit from conspiracies are actively working to further corrode trust in any official institutions. Did you notice how the WHO and CDC were under constant attack by anti-vaxxers saying they were part of the Big Vague Conspiracy? Do you notice how the Trumplican strategy is to attack the legitimacy of the Democratic government based on spurious claims of election fraud, therefore legitimising their own extreme rhetoric and political violence from their supporters? Do you notice how the far-right politicians love to claim they're not actually politicians like the corrupt liberal Establishment?
Makes sense. Flat earthers do have a mistrust of the government. They believe in many other conspiracies and basically don't believe anything the government says.

Roughly 2000 years ago, Greek (more broadly Hellenistic) astronomers made a careful study of the earth, moon (eclipses and half moon phases), and sun. Likely the simplest of these measurements was Eratosthenes' measurement of the earth's circumference, which was repeated by Posidonius using the star Canopus (and basically got the right answer). More complicated geometric arguments obtained the distance from the earth to the moon (60-70 earth's radii away by Hellenistic measurements, which is not bad ) and reasonably close estimates for the moon's radius (roughly 1/3 that of the earth). Probably the only thing they got very wrong was the distance between the sun and the earth, where the measurements needed were pushing the limits of the naked eye. Their equipment was very primitive, but their way of approaching the problem and trying to verify results with several types of measurements was strikingly modern. A modern approach to a problem or question can often overcome primitive technology. In contrast, flat earthers prove that a primitive approach to a problem can render modern technology useless.
It's a conspiracy driven by the globe industry along with the manufacturers of styrofoam balls that teachers indoctrinate kids in to the "round earth" and the "solar system " through the use of dioramas.

As an update to this. In 2024 a gentleman decided to offer both leading flat earther’s, and Globers a free trip to the Antartica to see that the sun never sets for themselves. I believe it will be in September to end the debate. Every flat earth or that was invited declined the offer. Apparently, they were too afraid to see it with their own eyes that their theories would be instantly debunked.
For those who want more information, it's called The Final Experiment (site here on YT and also its own stand alone), the person paying for it is Will Duffy, it's happening in December (14th-18th), and as of today, there are 2 flat-earthers who have indicated some involvement, with 7 globe supporters agreeing to be involved, with one - Dave McKeegan - selected to go for that side. So far the flat-earth representative has not been selected, although Jeran and Austin Witsit seem to be the leading contenders.
Unfortunately, flat-earthers will continue to deny it, even after they see the 24-hour sun. They deny all other facts that invalidate a flat earth, such as the sun and ships sinking below the horizon, actual photos, lunar eclipses, etc. They'll come up with some ad hoc bullshit to explain away the midnight sun in Antactica. It will probably be something along the lines of the flat-earthers (Jeran & Witsit) were paid to lie about it, or they were never real flat-earthers, but shills, or the entire party was brainwashed by NASA before returning home, and all their memories were implanted. It will be some wild and insane explanation, just as all their other explanations are. Basically there are two types of flat-earthers: 1. dishonest; 2. dishonest and stupid.

I can see why some people might believe conspiracies like 9/11, based on their own prejudices. But there is no obvious need to believe that NASA, the Feds or the CIA - or the 'world government' are trying to hide the 'truth'.

5% of 8 billion... thats still too high a density of stupidity.
This assumes you're qrguing with a rational person playing by the same rules as us (logic, science, reality...)

Almost a decade ago, I discovered online that there were people who believed the Earth was flat. I began arguing with them. I tried to understand what made them believe what they believe and thought of ways to debunk their beliefs in indisputable ways. Here are some examples:
-Flat earthers said that Antarctica surrounded the Earth, was comprised of 75-150 foot tall ice walls that could not be traversed, and if you somehow did manage to traverse the wall machine-gun-carrying NASA guards would turn you away. I'm guessing that flat earthers don't have much money because none took me up on the offer
-They were so convinced that the whole global concept was a means of controlling the populous. Then, I asked them a couple of questions:
1) How is it that these people or governments are going to somehow control me more or less just because of the shape of the planet? I mean, if the Earth is round or flat, from a government perspective... my life doesn't change in either case. From a controlling me perspective, nothing changes. My life from a governing perspective isn't affected by the shape of the planet. They of course had no answer for this and merely resorted to ad hominem attacks about how clueless I was and how they felt sorry for me.... even though they are the ones who couldn't answer the simplest of questions
2) Why?
For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie, in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness." 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12
Don't believe it if you want but this world is passing away.

Great point. And I’m afraid in the era of all the lies around Covid this distrust has gotten much worse
And that's true for ALL conspiracy theories.
I'm don't trust the government either, no one should. But I refuse to disbelieve what my senses and logic dictates because of it.
