2023 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Quick Review

  • The 2023 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 ($123,750 as specced in Canada, $117,180 as specced in the US) is powered by a 394 horsepower flat six engine, and has a claimed 0-100kmh time of 4.5 seconds. But this naturally aspirated sports car is about much more than straight line acceleration. With its blend of sports car excitement and daily usability, the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 could be considered as the ‘sweet spot’ between fun and practicality. But what do Thomas and James have to say about this beautifully green Porsche? After all, they have just ordered a competitor to this car - the Lotus Emira. Watch to see what they think! SUBSCRIBE!

Hey everyone just a clarification. Starting price for the Cayman recently changed (the wrong direction). In the US it's now $96,850 with delivery, and in Canada it's $112,042. And if you've read this far, you are very beautiful and I love you.

I think I agree with you. I have an Emira on order and test drove one a month ago. Great car but I do have concerns about potential build quality issues and small dealer network. I own other Porsches and have owned lots of other luxury brands. Nothing touches Porsche build quality IMO. Just ordered a Boxster GTS. I’ll probably take it over the Emira as well.

I test drove an Emira recently and I think the GTS 4.0 is better. The Emira is essentially just a reskinned Evora. It doesn’t drive like a modern car. The shifter is a little fussy and hard to place in gears. The steering while good, isn’t amazing like Mclarens. The GTS 4.0 feels like a glove. It does exactly what you want it to do when you want. The gearbox is buttery smooth, the damping is perfect. The steering is excellent. And it EXISTS. The Emira is great if you want something specifically for the more exotic looks, or you want something with “flaws”. Some people consider that to be character, and I can accept that. The 718 GTS 4.0 is the perfect all around sports car though IMO

@@rm1626 yea i get that. And I mentioned that in my comment. Some people enjoy flaws, as adding character. (I will say, I really dislike modern BMW manuals, they are very rubbery and light. Haven't driven something like an 04). Porsche's manual is almost like a PDK-lite. It's so perfect. Every shift is so easy to nail, upshifts and downshifts. I personally love it. You can be fast, and focus on your line, corners, steering, while still having full control of your transmission. You could argue, "might as well just get a pdk" lol, and that's a totally valid argument

Stiff, cramped and loud is the best way to describe a Cayman on a long trip. Loved it for shorter weekend romps in the mountains and a beast on the track, but daily in traffic, just not great. If you can afford to keep one in the garage for track and a Saturday run through the twisties, its just amazing.

I always struggle with this. I really like Porsche and I've done Camp4 and Camp4S and driven quite a few in anger and around the place. They always feel like the perfect car "for everything", but mildly compromised when it comes to all out fun as a result. They never really do lightweight - 50kg on the spyder version (at least the old generation) was disappointing. Seeing so many on the road also makes it feel less special to me. It's also easy to lost in the options. Every car review says how perfect they are - until the new generation comes along.
I was looking at one for an upgrade to my lotus exige 4 cyclinder (because I was trying to adult more) - but my head said yes, but my heart said no. Got the V6 exige. It only does one thing well. Everything else is a compromise. It is objectively a terrible option as a daily driver. But it was and I loved it. It is bullet proof with the toyota engine and drive train. Taken it everywhere. I've done 160,000 km in it.
Then when I went to upgrade that lotus, I went to a 600LT.
I still have the lotus though - you will never pry that from my hands.

Loved your comment about Porsche always finding a way to remove weight. I was at my local dealer recently for a service appointment and they allowed me a sneak peek at a new 718 Cayman GT4 RS they had hidden in the back. I was chatting with one of the staff and we got on this very topic of weight, when he pointed to the Porsche emblem on the front bonnet. He asked me if I noticed anything different, when I looked closer it was indeed different, it was a decal! All in the interest of saving weight. So you are right, Porsche will search for fractions of a gram if it serves their goal. As for your comparison to the Emira, I hear what you guys are saying but I would still take Porsche. It’s easy to fall in love with a car for one reason or another, but what really counts is build quality and the ownership experience after the purchase, and Porsche hands down goes out of their way to service their customers. I can’t say enough about how well Porsche treats me as a customer, and when there is an issue I can’t say enough about the responsibility they take, they genuinely care. I have both modern and classic Porsche cars in my garage, and they treat me and my cars exactly the same regardless the vintage.

I tried to order a new GTS 4.0 over a year ago. The dealer basically said no chance (20+ on the wait list just to get an allocation), so I scoured the West Coast and settled for a lightly used '17 718 S. Great car, and the 4 cylinder doesn't actually sound terrible. It certainly has way more usable torque down low, and not super far off on the hp. Philisophical question, since you called the Cayman a sports car: where does sports car end and supercar begin? If a Cayman, Emira, C8, and R8 are all mid-engine and exotic-looking with interesting engines, what makes the R8 unquestionably a supercar while everyone calls a Cayman "just" a sports car? Then you have things that blur the lines like an Emira or C8. I ask this not cause I think the Cayman should be considered a supercar or whatever, but because I just think it's an interesting question to pose.

With headers and stage two it makes 370hp, truly all you need for the street.
There are guys tracking these with 150,000 miles on them. Just keep up on the maintenance and it’s no worries. It has lifetime drive axles and timing chain. I do my own maintenance which takes about one Saturday every summer. If you buy a Quick Jack it’ll pay for itself in less than two years. I spend 200 a year for basic maintenance and replace soft tires every two years but there’s a price for everything and it’s well worth it for the sheer pleasure every time I drive it.
You can get a 2013-2015 with 40,000 miles or less in really great condition for 50k or less.

It's a great car! I had a 2022 GTS 4.0 and sold it recently. The car is close to perfect except for the gearing. The gears, as everyone has already said, are too long and since the engine is amazing and revs to almost 8000 rpms, you get into "go to jail" speeds very quickly as you chase those revs. The car is amazing but it would be almost perfect with shorter gearing, where you could really enjoy revving the car out on the street without risking losing your license. Porsches are great cars, I’ve owned a 981 Boxster, 718 Cayman, 991.2 911, 992 C2S, and currently a Cayenne coupe and love(d) them all. However, they are getting absolutely delusional with their new car prices. Although they obviously punch above their weight, we have a base 911 with 379 hp that is $125k with options. A 379 hp car for $125k😐. We have this Cayman GTS, great car but again $110k with options. Both these cars are going to most likely get rolled on the highway by a $65k M2 and without a doubt get rolled at all speeds by an $85k M3 or M4 xDrive.
I traded my 21 M2 Comp when I got the C2S brand new back in 2021 and although the C2S is undoubtedly faster, I can’t say it’s all that more fun than the M2 comp was for less than half the price.

I personally don't think the tall gearing is the main issue but it is part of the problem. For me, the main issue is the 4 liter doesn't sound alive until you are at least half way through the RPM band. If Porsche managed to make the engine sound more lively down low, people wouldn't be complaining nearly as much. If it the Cayman/Boxster 4 liter sounded more like the GT3 4 liter in the GT4RS/Spyder RS, most of the complaining would go away as you wouldn't be forced to rev the engine out so much to actually hear it.
Changing out the exhaust would fix some of the problem, making the car sound a little different earlier.

Honestly, I think Porsche having not redesigned the interior is unacceptable. Obviously the driving dynamics are amazing but that doesn't mean it should get a pass for the interior being multiple generations behind. The interior components are only a slight upgrade from a 2006 997. It's extraordinarily outdated and for the price there are many cars that offer the same performance with better technology. Especially if we're saying you can daily drive them. Especially considering the base GTS doesn't even feel luxurious. The interior tech just unacceptable and on a 100k plus car, the base model doesn't feel premium. Additionally, although it has a flat 6, the power just doesn't compare to it's less expensive and more luxurious competitors. This price is in M4 territory which is over 500hp with amazing dynamics and a very luxurious interior. Same with the Lotus Emira. I don't care that it "drives like a Porsche" if my former 2012 Acura MDX has better tech and more leather. And yes, I've driven one. Doesn't make sense to hand out exceptions to very flawed cars just because they're a "Porsche"

Rear wheel drive so there is zero steering control over 150 kmh and the gearing on the porsches are way too tall. If only they listen posches would be on another level

Porsche reliability is the big factor that swings things into its favor, IMO. Especially relative to Lotus.

Nonsense. I have an ‘05 Elise. Way more reliable than a Boxster or Cayman. Modern Lotus cars use Toyota drivetrains and electronics.

@@craigyirush3492 Yeah, but everything else is Lotus, and doesn't hold up well. Both a track buddy and myself had Elise's and Exige's. All had problems with AC, electrical issues, body creak issues, etc. I went to a C5 Z06 for a track car now, and while not as light weight, a ton more fun, and reliable.

@@truthserum5310 the electrics are Denso. I’ve got lots of hard road and track miles on my Elise with zero electrical or mechanical issues apart from a leaky radiator at 50k miles. They are rugged little cars.

@@craigyirush3492 It was also just too compromised for me being in South Florida. Factory HVAC was mediocre at best. Used to drive it all the way up to PBIR and back. Took too much of a toll.

I got my photos last week and mine is currently in transit to the port. Tracking it on the site is pretty cool.

I had the privilege of renting one of these through Turo last summer for a long weekend at Watkins Glen. What an absolutely brilliant car, even though my driving was limited to public roads not the track itself. That flat-4 makes a great sound, and has all the power you need! Probably the best vehicle I've ever driven.

Wish you’d not knock the center console infotainment. Do you want a hideous screen stuck on the top of the dash?
