2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Quick Review // Red Hot Chili Porsche

  • The 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS ($187,000 CAD as specced ~$146,000 USD) is able to put a strong 590 Horsepower down to all four wheels. It has a claimed 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds. Often assigned the phrase "the sweet spot of the range" it splits the difference between a base Taycan and the range-topping Turbo S. But seeing as how neither of those floated Thomas and James' boat, perhaps the GTS is the hero they needed all along. We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!!

I own a GTS and the range isn’t that big of deal for me. The other day I went from 7% to 85% battery in 22 min on a 350kw charger. If you want to take it on a long trip you have to stop for 22 min. Get some food, no big deal. The car comes with 3 years of free charging too. It is the greatest car I’ve ever owned. It looks 1000 times better than a Lucid Air & the EQS.

I always thought that the skipping numbers thing was purely because the numbers are on screen long enough to actually read. The idea being that you just glance at it, so if it's effectively scrolling then you wouldn't really be able to read the 2nd digit, so a slightly laggy number is better than that.

The reason why a display, such as a speed display, may have a delay is because it's measuring frequency and the counter gating time is dependent on the desired resolution and input frequency. So it comes down to the gearing of the speed sensor and how many pulses there are per revolution of the final drive. I'm not sure what constraints there would be on the speed sensor gearing but my point is there are reasons why frequency measurements are not instantaneous.

The range of the Taycan is really not a big problem in Germany and Western Europe. Basically Porsche wanted to keep weight down and rather put a lot of engineering into its 440V architecture and fast chagrining capabilities: charging at up to 270 kW DC. On any German Motorway you will find 250+ changers at most motorway stations, making a stop 10 - 20 minutes to get it back up to 80%. So from Berlin to Munich, you might need one more stop, but these stops are shorter than most rivals of its time. And on a daily commute, the range doesn't matter at all and you will enjoy the handling a lot more. All that said, if you are in countries without a dense CCS network (like northern America) that is a problem and makes range a very real argument.

Great review, and I love the channel, you guys bring such a light hearted take to these while still taking the cars seriously. As an EV owner, i can say the most overrated thing is range (once you get to a very comfortable usable daily point of course, which for me I think is about 200 miles). Charging speed is more important for real long road trips, and day to day 200 miles is plenty for anyone that has level 2 charging at home overnight. Taycan charges faster than pretty much any car on the road, making it about as good for road trips as any other EV other than, admittedly, a road trip of about 300 miles where a Lucid or long range S would not need to have a charging stop at all until destination, but once you’re through leg 1 it’s all about charging speed. Check out Kyle/Out of Spec’s race to Vegas, really highlighted this point. Love the channel, and man that Taycan is a sweet looking car.

I think the Taycan GTS is the perfect combination of performance / drive engagement .. about the range, range it’s perfect for 99% of the time, and when you need fast charging in a road trip for example, you can charge from 5-80% in 22 minutes, after driving 2-3 hours. I actually believe the charge is faster then we actually need in a regular road trip .. stop for bathroom and buy a bottle of water is 5-10 min … and that will give you another 100 miles of range !!!

In the US, the Taycan GTS starts at $135,550. The Lucid Air Touring starts about $116K with options you can spec. now (cars coming late 2022, eventually as cheap as $107,400--maybe), or you can step up to the Air Grand Touring, which starts at $154K but is available now. Knowing Porsche's affinity for options gouging, I'm guessing the closer final comparison is the latter Lucid.
Anyway, EPA range for the GTS is not final, but it should be around 220 miles (the Turbo gets 212mi, and 4S goes 227mi). The Air Touring reaches 406 mi (also not final), and the Grand Touring 516 mi. The GTS does 0-60 in 3.5 sec, Air Touring in 3.2 sec, and Grand Touring in 3.0 sec with the standard powertrain. GTS HP is 509 (590 with launch control overboost), Air Touring makes 620 HP, and Air Grand Touring 819 HP standard.
As much as I like the Taycan, that short range makes it best for local trips, and I think it will quickly make the model obsolete, at least in this price bracket. I could accept the small rear seats for the amazing authentic Porsche handling, but given that the Lucid is a handler as well, I think you'd be a fool not to choose it over something that's already a generation behind.

I dont understand this range anxiety. I have driven several time from Stockholm to Garmisch-Partenkirchen which is 1900 km and it takes me maybe one hour more than in my F80 M3. And it's about 100 times more relaxing. And what the best thing is I can drive through fast corners even faster than in my M3. I seriously doubt any Lucid or Tesla can do that.
The Taycan is like a generation or 2 generations ahead of Lucid and Tesla in driving experience (if Lucid or Tesla ever get there)...

Messtechnik-engineer here(itsa german word that pretty much means measurement technologies). the reason for the speedo not being so accurate is pretty much the scan rate related. higher the scan rate you have, the more accurate it will be. but it will require higher refresh rate screens to be able to adapt, and more powerfull processors to calculate. now im not saying cost difference is huge, but its just enough that if you are producing thousands of vehicles it is significant.
if you are really curious we are nevertheless physically limited to accurate measurement of speed. its called heisenberg principle, meaning we cant know the speed and location of a sample at the same time very accurately. a simple thing like measuring speed is actually a very complex phenomenon when you dive deep into it.
for anyone who are even more curious and can speak german : read the book Elektrische Messtechnik von Elmar Schrüfer,
Leonhard M. Reindl, Bernhard Zagar. its a piece of art really. having a bsc or msc on engineering would be helpfull to understand the book.

@@rubiooibur8534 I think you mean Cayman ev, Porsche is still considering the 911 ev, they've even said that the 911 could just be discontinued if they can't keep the flat six alive. I hope they let it die in peace after the hybrid version, and if they don't, they better make a damn good version of a electric 911.

To answer James, the reason speed doesn't instantly update is because of the type of speedometer.
When the speed is displayed with a needle, if you accelerate a lot, you can read your speed in an instant because the numbers are static and the needle is relatively slow which is simple to see. If you want to accelerate to 60km/h, you simply look at the 60 on your speedometer while pushing the pedal until the needle reaches it.
When the speed is displayed with a number, if you accelerate a lot, you can't read your speed in an instant because the numbers change too fast and are complex shapes to see. If you want to accelerate to 60km/h, you can't look at the numbers because they will appear blurry unless you accelerate slow enough that your eyes can tell the numbers properly.
Basically, just move your fingers very fast in front of you. They will be blurry despite going nowhere near as fast as the numbers in a speedometer. To avoid that, speedometers skip numbers so each number gets displayed a longer amount of time in order for you to read it. Otherwise, you just have a tornado in your face when you touch the acceleration pedal.
P.S.: This is mostly relevant with electric cars where the acceleration is high since a higher acceleration means a faster change in numbers.
P.S.: Less display updates also lets them cheap out on the hardware.

Level 1 charing is really only for emergencies. It basically a trickle charge to maintain the batteries in these newer longer range cars.
Think of it as a spare tire.
No wonder most manufacturers stopped including them.

I had always thought that having an EV would be fun at first and then quickly get boring...until I rode in a Taycan 4S. It was so fast, so smooth and honestly the weird EV noises it makes are kind of cool. I don't think it would fully scratch the enthusiast car itch but it is one hell of a car if you can afford it.
