2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 vs 718 Spyder // When Numbers Don't Matter

  • This is the new 2020 718 Cayman GT4 and its joined by its slightly cheaper convertible twin, the 2020 Porsche Boxster Spyder. Both are a dream enthusiast formula. They are the Cayman and Boxster in their ultimate forms (until perhaps a GT4RS arrives), and what better way to test them than to hit some of our favourite back roads? Specced today at $148,000 CAD (GT4) and $129,000 CAD (Boxster Spyder), they command a hefty premium, so are they worth it? James and Thomas jump behind the wheel of both to experience them and discuss them inside and out. Watch and enjoy!

This this that makes this channel special. The fact that you guys don't just talk about figures and numbers. You two really know what it means to drive and experience a car, and know what's important at the end of the day, how the car makes you feel. I've always wanted these cars, but you're right, if you can't enjoy it, what's the point? Maybe it's time i take down my Porsche posters and pin up an MX-5.

I have both a Mk2 MX5 and a 2.7 986 Boxster. Of course the Boxster is faster, more comfrotable and more planted. Not to mention, that flat 6 howl.... However, the MX5 still brings a smile to my face whenever I drive it, so responsive and agile. Both are relatively affordable as well. At least, certainly compared to these two. So maybe not your dream cars, but very attainable cars that will make you happy and don't have to remain posters at your wall.

@@MakkyTakiStoleYourBaki Absolutely incredible car. I feel like at a certain point, though, you've lost all livability. To me, that's what really makes a good Porsche: It has to work as a daily. It shouldn't with what it can do on the track or from a stoplight. It shouldn't be that good and still be drivable and livable. I feel like the RS is drivable to the track, but really not livable or even enjoyable out on the road. You really can't rev it out, carbon ceramic brakes are apparently pretty unpleasant in normal city and highway driving. It's an absolutely special car, but I just don't think it would work out in the real world. I really want to be able to enjoy my Porsche the 95% of my life that I'm not at the track, as well as the 5% that I am.

Great video guys. I have the Spyder and I absolutely love it. My first drive in it was a 4.5 hour trip home. I have got the carbon bucket seats. After the first hour I thought blimey my back is sore but strangely after another hour or so the pain went away. I arrived home after an epic trip across country feeling wonderful. After two Lotus Elises I find the roof easy to put up or down. Unless it’s raining the roof stays down for even more enjoyment. This is truly a great car.

@@kingjinx9924 The heated buckets in my Spyder are very comfortable but they are not an option anymore. The only buckets available now on the Spyder feel too upright. A lot of owners modify them by fitting a couple of bespoke brackets that incline them very slightly. Apparently it makes a significant improvement.

    • @cartergarnon6299

@@kingjinx9924 it’s not the comfort, they’re actually quite comfortable. It’s getting in and out over the side bolsters. It’s and up/over deal where there steering wheel is an issue getting out for some folks and getting in is an ungraceful fall. You will be hurting for the first 15 minutes after you fall in. So for a 4 hour journey they’re actually relatively better than they are for quick runs around town…after you install the brackets to slightly recline them back. Not being able to get in and out, not being able to have the heating element if you want it, and no adjustability isn’t worth the little bit of savings…that carbon though…🤤

The gear ratios are virtually the same as on the 997 GT3, and no one complained about it then. People say the 997 GT3 is a high water mark for Porsche driver's cars. The GT4 now has more HP than the 997 and weighs the same, so why does every single reviewer complain about the long gear ratios now?

The 718’s valves close themselves, even with the button on, for most of the rev range. Once that’s sorted, either via a $250 controller, or a $.02 zip tie, you’re good to go. Pop in a couple air filters and you get the RS’s intake sound. That being said, if you’ve already got a dialed in 981, absolutely skip the 718.

The 981 and 718 GT4’s are absolute dream cars. In my opinion, better than the 911’s. It’s just a shame that Porsche purposely limited the HP/torque to prevent it from unseating the 911. Unfortunately, they _need_ that power gap to justify that $200k+ price tag for their flagship. Sadly, I think it will always be that way for the production life of the Cayman GT4, even if they make a RS version. The long gears are a common complaint, and I really hope they improve the ratios (in addition to adding more power) in later iterations. Sharkwerks in CA will regear the 981 and 718 to what it should have been out of the factory; however, the $10k cost and the loss of your PCNA warranty don’t seem worth it unless your pockets are deep enough.

Here’s the thing about the Boxster vs Cayman; the Boxster came first. The Cayman is the exact same car PLUS a roof. It’s actually heavier than the Spyder. Most people get that wrong because usually the convertible is an afterthought. The Spyder isn’t a convertible, it’s a Spyder, that’s the difference. The Spyder is the best handling car ever made, no additional rigidity necessary.

Got to drive the new GT4 this past weekend for a few laps. It was amazing. I have a Infiniti G37 S and it’s the most responsive and powerful car I had driven prior. The main difference that I could tell immediately was the steering response and the grip. The track didn’t have any long straights so the fastest a good driver could get to is about 100 and I could get to 80. My Infiniti can go fast in a straight line…but when I took a corner in the GT4 at speed is when my face lit up. Each lap got better and I didn’t push the car anywhere near its limit and it was still exhilarating.

I owned a boxster 981 and the extra-long gearing was already an issue: good for driving crazy (Nürburgring lap times? ) but frustrating in real live. I knew the car was able to be perfect to drive but only in 5% in the real world road. I trade it after 1 year (loosing a lot of money) for a used 997 gts. Pure love.

Guys! Greetings from a fellow Torontonian (I assume that’s where you’re based?). I love your approach! Great production, good, honest and humorous reviews. Ripping around on the back roads, you are saying exactly the same things I have always said for years about my 987.1 Boxster S. Thankfully that ‘only’ has about 325 HP so I can rev it out, but I still end up blistering down the on-ramp in second and shifting up into third as I merge. But it’s better than only getting on shift (1st is very short in that car). These are beautiful machines... I am glad they are as analogue as the older ones. Mine has a short-throw shifter and stiffer H&R springs (along with a few engine mods) which makes it very quick, very loud (Miltek exhaust) and very hard. Not a car for long drives. But for twisty, athletic drives, and pure fun - it can’t be beat. A Cayman R would be quicker, but everyone loves a convertible - kids even scream and wave. Thanks for the reviews! Keep them up.
