Hi great video. I read an interview with Kirk from around 86 and he said he had a black Les-Paul custom (don't remember from when but I do bellive it's a late 50's because of the pu's) that he used to record "Fade to Black". You can see him play it live version of that song that's featured on Clif' em all.

The Metallica book, 'Back to the front' states on page 158 that: "James and Kirk each used a 100-watt Marshall JCM800 head for their clean sound and a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ for the crunch." I reckon the 'Boogies slaved into Marshalls' story is a long time bit of misinfo, that's been circling the internet for at least 20 years. Otherwise great video, man!

There are definitely a few articles about their early gear. It’s been a while, but I am pretty sure that they were also using hardcore rack Parametric EQ’s (multiples) on Ride The Lightning to get that sound. That’s why they were so jazzed to have one right on the amp when they tried Mesa.

From my understanding the reason they used the power section of the modded Marshall JCM 800's was because it gave the sound of the guitars more of a "dry" sound less natural thickness the 6L6 mesa would give. they also ran the Amps through 70s Marshall cabs with T-75 speakers.

5:43 As far as I know, James was the one who solely used the Mark IIC+, and Kirk solely used the JCM800. But for some parts and leads, i suspect the duo riffing in battery (the one before the solo), the JCM as a poweramp and the Mark as a preamp were used.

From what I've heard many times since I first heard Metallica in 1984 is Lars called Kirk , Kirk said yes to joining ,Dave did play a few gigs after they arrived but when Kirk was on the way they fired Dave then rehearsed & did some gigs before going into the studio. Kirk wasn't hired the day before they went in the studio. I'm sure he used the Hamster Caster on MOP album at least for the whammy stuff. Just saw Kirk saying he had ESP build his first one you showed in 87 & he had just started using EMG's just before that also. And for Justice he also had just got a Tom Anderson guitar. Don't know if he used it on the album . He could easily confirm the year of his No.1 Gibson V but I've only ever heard it's a 74.

In a Guitar For The Practicing Musician Magazine from around the summer of 1991 Kirk said he used the Boss Distortion 1 pedal at least for the Search and Destroy solo. Along with a T.C. Electronics unit of some sort at least for the same solo but it's highly likely he used both throughout the album

I used a MIM Floyd Rose Strat(lic. Floyd not a real one). It was black with a rosewood board. I put a hot rails in the bridge and neck and I left the factory single in the middle and I put a black pickup cover in place of the white one. Put on 3 black knobs on the volume and tones and a black switch tip. It was an Edna on a budget. Lol! It worked for me and closely resembles Kirk's Fernandez Edna.

My understanding was that for AJFA they used some rack preamps into mesa mark IVs with multiple cabs and mic positions, including room mics. Flemming goes into some of the mics used and the methodology of that recording. The toms were mic'd with 57s surprisingly.

Not uncommon or odd at all. Shure sm57s have been industry standard all purpose mics for decades. I've seen em used to record damn near every instrument at this point. Never seen one used on a kick but that's about the only exception.

Speaking of slaving Marshalls with Boogies, it was quite common for players to slave a Boogie Studio .22 combo through a Marshall. This is part of the sound on Appetite for Destruction. Izzy Stradlin used this on the road too. Mesa eventually came out with a rack mounted Studio .22 preamp because they were so popular. As a preamp I think it's superior to the Mark III rackmount. Just sounds better.
