  • For the first time on A Tale of Two Tones, the two tones of two guitar players... James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica!
    Being the pioneers of thrash metal we felt we had to cover both guitar players from Metallica, from their humble beginnings of the early 80s Metallica's tone and sound has changed a lot over a career going into their 5th decade. We decided to focus mainly on their tone from around '84/'85 and the more modern Death Magnetic/ World Magnetic tour eras.
    As always with A Tale of Two Tones, we didn't go for specific tones and gear but we wanted to capture the vibe of the tone. So to do that we used a Gibson 70s Flying V and Charvel So-Cal through a Marshall JVM for the 80s tones and both James' and Kirk's LTD signature guitars through a Mesa Boogie Triple Crown for their more modern tones.
    Hope you enjoy our approximation of the Two Tones of Metallica! Let us know in the comments below what you think.
    We'd also love to hear who you would like to hear next in our series of A Tale of Two Tones! (And if you liked us tackling the tones of a band!)

    Hey folks! Hope you're enjoying this latest instalment of the Tale of Two Tones series. Just wanted to point out that a gremlin got in to the system and the duelling guitars towards the end of the video got pushed out of sync with each other, in case you were wondering. I'm usually sloppy but not quite that bad! - Jack

    Took me nearly 15 years of guitar playing messing around with various different amps and effect pedals etc to realise the classic boosted Marshall setup is what I needed all along. Ended up with a DSL, and discovered it even has a "sound like Metallica" button that helpfully stabs your mid frequencies in the kidneys and dumps their body in a canal.

    No disrepect to Andertons, but this show absolutely wrecks "Sounds Like" even when they bust the bank. Sometimes Matt and Bea are so far off on their tones.

    • @armansant6607
      @armansant6607 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I think one of the reasons its due the fact that they only use what is in the Andertons store, like in the "How to sound Like Dimebag" they use Schecter and Ibanez for Guitar, because they dont have Dean or Washburn, they are stuck in what it is in the store.

    • @flips220
      @flips220 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@armansant6607 1.) Peach Guitars is also a store, and thus would be limited to what they have in stock as well. And 2.) There's a fundamental misunderstanding about guitars in your argument. Too many people think that the guitar brand determines what kind of music you can play. Brand almost doesn't even matter so long as you're picking something with similar body construction (i.e. solid vs. hollow body) and pickup type. A lot of it is going to be in the pickups, pedals, and amp/cab/speaker combinations. Not a lot of it has to do with Ibanez, Schecter, Dean, etc. Tone does not come from the label on the headstock.

      @@flips220 Don't take me wrong, I get what you say, I was just saying that sometimes they dont have the equipment that "defines" the sound of an artist, like pedals amps/cabs, etc, like what you were saying, the guitar brand it was just an example.

    • @Andromahlius
      @Andromahlius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be honest, the budget thing in the Anderton's videos is an issue for bands playing certain brands. I don't think they've done a single demo with a Mark or Rectifier. The second issue is, their demo players don't play in the old 80es style, someone should tell Rabea you don't chug on three strings when playing 80es thrash or Maiden. They're all really good players but the 80es metal just isn't their thing and they don't know it very well.

    As someone who played metal in the early eighties can confirm that a jcm 800 and boss superoverdrive does the job. I played a Gibson original 70's V and it's important not to have too hot a sound going in if you want definition. The dynamic range of those old gibson pick ups is a big part of the early Priest/Saxon/Metallica thing. Nice job by the way. Oh yeah. You have to crank the amp a bit too lol.

    • @TheChadPad
      @TheChadPad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Very important. We're so hyped up about hot pickups, we forget that you can loose definition if the signal's too hot going in

      i'm also an older musician myself and i agree i think many times musicians follow trends just like the rest of us and the mania for EMG's and the like had alot to do with that fact. in reality a GIBSON PAF or, say, a DIMARZIO SUPER DISTORTION has all the power and far more definition. yes i am a hardcore GIBSON man but even still i've delved into the subject quite a bit and the older style (shall we call them) have always been better in my book.

    • @ithemba
      @ithemba 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NoirL.A. as a player who grew up in the midst of the aftermarket pickup craze and obsessed over PUs for years, switched between over a dozen, here is what i learnt: when playing at home and bedroom level, hot PUs give you instant gratification, they kinda simulate the feel and sound of much louder tones. Thats a big part of what people enjoy about them. With a loud tube amp, it kinda levels out.
      there are very good very hot PUs out there that keep definition very well, but nowadays I couldn't be bothered to go any further than a decent Paf style, a Seymour Duncan JB/ 59 or a Super Distortion. Instead I learned about the magic of a buffer in the signal chain (here again, active PUs absolutely have their benefits for a live-rig with all those cables).

    Kirks main studio guitar in the 80s was a 70s Gibson Flying V. It was reissued (limited run) by Gibson a couple of years back. He didn'† put EMGs in it until after Kill em All was recorded though, perhaps even after Ride The Lightning was recorded too. He also had a Fernandes Strat with EMG SA pickups during RtL, as well as a red Kramer Guitar, A Jackson RR1T and two ESO MM-250 guitars acquired in 1987, one of which became his main guitar for a few years (the one with the Zorlac decal) .
    It's important to note that James tracked ALL the rhythm guitars up until their self-titled album, so you don't hear ANY rhythm guitar from Kirk on the albums recorded in the 80s.
    They started using Mesa/Boogie amps for the recording of MoP. 1 or 2 tracks were recorded with the Boogies (2c+ coliseum) slaved through the poweramp section of an 800, but the rest were just straight up Boogies through stock Marshall cabs, most likely fitted with G12M-65w speakers (either that or G12T-75s. The T-75s back then were DIFFERENT from the ones produced now, they had a different cone I believe, so the sound wasn't as brittle as the ones currently fitted in 1960A cabs) ..
    James' main guitars was the Gibson Flyin V copy (it had a bolt on neck) , Gibson Explorer EXP 83 (from 1985 onwards) and ESP Explorers delivered to him during the Damaged Justice tour in 1988 (I seriously doubt James had them when they recorded AJFA).

      I think Eminence’s Redcoat series speakers might actually have a copy of the G12T75 speaker in their lineup. I can’t say I know for certain, but I’ve heard that the Eminence Man O War is basically a copy of a Celestion G12. I know the Eminence CV75 is a recreation of the very early Celestion V30 speakers, and they sound really good.

    James’ “Gibson V” was actually an Elektra copy with a gibson truss rod cover. He used Seymour Duncan Invaders until the Master of Puppets album, when he started trying out EMGs (Mainly the 81/60). He actually retired the Elektra pretty early on (‘84-ish) and went over to a Jackson King V and was using the Invaders in the Jackson as well. Huge Metallica fan myself, and started delving into their tones within my first year of playing (currently on my 2nd year. Crazy to think that it’s only been two years but I’ve improved so much over those 2 years) and then started chasing “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott’s tone. Now I’m just looking for my own tone. Also, love the tones in this one. Not many people tend to get this close without using the AxeFX, Kempers, or even the audio interface and programs such as Softube and Amplitude. 🤟🏼

      you're absolutely right except he only used the JACKSON on 'THE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE' and that was because the song was tuned to 430 rather than 440. no one knows for sure what happened to the ELETKTRA V or why he stopped playing it but thereafter for years the GIBSON EXPLORER became his primary until later 80's when he switched to ESP EXPLORERS mostly because they offered him an endorsement. if you watch the METAL HAMMER festival footage mid 80's he actually switches mid way through the gig. i've always wondered why but he's never comented on it. btw, for only having been at it a few years your knowledge is impressive.

      Speaker makes a huge difference to sound for sure, but I think it's usually overlooked because it's just not as easy or practical to get the right speaker (and cabinet, let's not forget) as it is to get the right pedals and settings.
      Most guitarists of sufficient experience can hear the tone "through" the colouration of the speaker, or otherwise compensate for it anyway.

When i did go for the RTL tone i noticed that james scooped the mids, more than you would think and actually didnt push alot of bass in his tone, somewhere the treble was in the ballpark of about 7-8. Yes passive pickups are the best to go for when shooting to mimic a tone from this metallica era.

I'd like to know what songs Kirk recorded on his single coil guitars like his American Strat (EMG SA pups), Ritchie Blackmore Signature Strat, 1963 original Strat, and his ESP Strat copy. I'd argue that certain songs sound like they were recorded on single coil guitars, but what guitar was used on what song? I had seen Metallica live back in 1992 and Kirk used his vintage white Strat with the EMG SA pickups on "The Unforgiven".

      People often assume that Hetfield’s Mark II is a 6-tube Coliseum because it’s a long head chassis, but that’s not correct. Many quad tubed Mark II heads were built in the long head chassis, too. Hetfield’s Mark II was no exception; his is a 75 watt simul-class head with the ++ factory mod.

    I’ve got me a JCM 800, and my Green Rhino just ain’t doing it. Can someone recommend the proper boost pedal for Metallica? All the Screamer style pedals I try are too tight and don’t have enough fuzz under the note. It’s just not working with thick sounding riffs like Jambi (Tool) or The Motherload (Mastodon) or Orion for example, the bass response is there, but there’s this slight fuzziness under the chug that’s missing with a screamer circuit.
