Definitely not a main guitar, but Kirk did use some sort of Ibanez during the black album tour. If you watch some of their European shows, Basel, Switzerland as an example, during the Orion/To Live is to Die/Call of Ktulu medley you can see him playing one.
Also love these videos, keep up the good work 👍🤘

Hey good point! Yeah not a main guitar, but it’s always cool when people comment additional gear. I love doing these videos because other people help me out in comments. Thanks for reaching out!

He also used an ESP strat in the One video, as well as a similar, if not the same guitar during The Unforgiven during the black album tour

    • @roosterj2599

You are correct. Kirk did use a few Ibanez RG models during the black album tour. Ibanez was trying to scoop up as many endorsers they could get. During this time CC Deville and Tracii Guns switched to Ibanez. In the late 80's Kirk played a few Kramer Baretta guitars and even a BC RICH Gunslinger with a snake skin finish.

Fascinating video, I really appreciate the info! Kirk's surprisingly large collection of Strats always interested me (Vintage White with Seymour pups, 1963 Strat, Richie Blackmore Signature...etc).

Kirk has always been one of my favourites and primary influences when it comes to metal guitarists and has some really damn cool gear, though I was surprised that you didn’t specify that the ‘59 Les Paul he has was actually the iconic “Greeny” Les Paul that was originally owned by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac and later Gary Moore before Hammett picked it up for I believe around $2 million. Great vid nonetheless, man, keep it up

That Marshall with the orange sticker is my amp. He uses it on almost every recording (blended with a modern high-gain amp) or at least up until the last album. It was hot run it by Todd Langner who used to work at ADA and designed the MP-1 midi preamp.

I read several interviews with Kirk in the 80s in which he said he used Boogies for rhythm and Marshalls boosted with Tube Screamers for solos, so even live he'd switch to the Marshalls for solos rather than the Boogies for rhythm.

Kirk also used a mesa boogie strategy 400, ADA MP-1 and I don’t think he used an 800, he was using a Plexi. With a tube screamer. And a Soldano SLO during the black album.
And live, he’s been using 2 rack mount Dual Rectifiers for 20 years. Except now he’s using that awful ax fx

    • @xanderraymondcharles

    • @zachcoelho6949
      @zachcoelho6949 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I've heard that on the recording for Master Of Puppets that James recorded all rhythm tracks and Kirk just did his leads. But I've only heard that being the case on that particular album. If you watch the little documentaries they make you can usually see him recording some rhythm tracks

It looks like your were right about the black album. www.amptone.com/g153.htm
“ Guitar Player Oct 1992, The Distortion Issue.
"My philosophy has always been a clean amp with a stomp box. I hate the sound of piling distortion on top of distortion. [It sounds like he's criticizing using a mix of preamp and power amp distortion.] I was using a MESA/Boogie preamp, but I've gone back to the ADA MP-1 [the first preamp to combine MIDI and a preamp vacuum tube] with an ADA programmable EQ through a MESA/Boogie Strategy 400 power amp. For leads, I use a low gain setting on the ADA MP-1, but switch on an Ibanez Tube Screamer. Using the Tube Screamer in conjunction with a tube amp really brings out the tube qualities of the amp. And there's just something about that simple, raw, gritty fuzz box sound. One of the best lead sounds I ever got was when I played an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff through a Montgomery Ward amp with 3" speaker, for a Jeff Beck tone.’”

In the studio he used mostly his old marshall for leads.
Death magnetic era hetfield was all over the place with krankestein's, diezel vh4 and mark IIC+ paired with his oldest flying V copy, hard to say where hammett sits in all of this mayhem.
