I've heard that "Fade To Black" was written due to James being devastated at the loss of his amps. Apparently his mother (who had passed away at that time) had helped him buy that Plexi, so the loss hit him hard as it was something that connected him to his mother.

    • @flippy7035

The RTL tones don't fully come to life until you quad track through this setup, then it sounds like the album. That thickness is hard to convincingly replicate with a mono rig.

I have seen them 6 times over the years. Whats funny to me is I always loved James' chunky rhythms but when you hear him live your like "WHOA! That sounds awesome but different". The point being his live sound is totally different then what people hear on records. Not to mention until the Justice album James actually recorded Kirk's rhythm parts with Kirk's guitars so they have the same timings and saved time. Kirk ONLY recorded solo's on the first 3 albums. And like you said in the videos there is many overlaid tracks and speed changes so what your hear on the album is different then what you would hear when they play live. So most people go for the recorded "sound". Bob Rock really tried to capture this on the black album so when they played live, it didnt sound different. That's when gear really changed.

The guitars tones, both James and Kirk, on the Mercyful Fate Medley are my favorite Metallica tones on record. I really love quite a bit of James' Marshall tones actually. The distorted tones on Fade To Black and Blitzkrieg are probably my other two favorite Hetfield tones.

Hey Ryan, I'm still a bit confused on how to use an overdrive to supplement the amp's distortion. Do I need to back off the gain on my amp or the pedal? I'm trying to get a good Reload tone out of my Marshall DSL20 because I want to do some covers. I have an Ibanez OD clone from Deltalab, should trying to use that like the OCD?

    • @plumbummusic2051
      @plumbummusic2051 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey, not Ryan here! The classic overdrive setup for clean boost is Gain/Drive at zero, level at max and tone at 12 o'clock-ish. I'd recommend setting your amp gain at 12 o'clock as well and then tilt it back and forth for less/more gain until you find the sweet spot.
You can also set the drive on your pedal to 9 o'clock to add some more crunch to your distorted amp

I think it's the one from the gig they did in either Ventura or Riverside) .. For Countdown (at least live) they both used CAE 3+ Preamps. For the RIP tour as well as the Countdown tour, they used VHT2150 poweramps as well.

The KEL and RTL stuff sounds great, and very close. Cant criticize that at all.
IMO though the OCD/v30 setup sounds very good as a tone in its own right, its missing the wizard kerrang and the seething high midrange character, and is perhaps a bit more fizzy. You did a great job getting close, but there's a reason they can charge that much for their amps - you can't truly nail a wizard tone without a wizard.

The perfect guitar for early Hetfeild-tones would probably be a Gibson 70s Flying V in vintage white, either with a Seymour Duncan invaders set or a Gibson Dirty Fingers in the bridge position.
Pair with a greenback loaded 4x12, Marshall JCM 800 and a tubescreamer/proco rat and you're set

Kill Em All’s tone is so thin it’s usable in drop F. Also those old Electra guitars are essentially U.S. quality considering they were Japanese made from the lawsuit era.

Its funny I have an Ibanez Roadstar II RB650 bass that was made in the 80's when the lawsuit era was still going on then Ibanez quit making Roadstars because they looked exactly like a p bass then the soundgear basses were a step up with active electronics. I want a lawsuit era Ibanez destoryer explorer bass which are hard to find now because Ibanez wont make them again. I'm a Ibanez aficionado.

Whoa love the sounds ... Personally think the Mesa sound is more interesting...
Learning to dial these tones in (and this video is invaluable for that) can help better flex those creative juices and give you starting points to fit the mood of your song/piece better.
Personally, Load onwards really don't cater to me. I just can't actually feel that music anymore, am no longer interested in their lyrics, etc. But hey others swear by them - Music is subjective after all...
Anyway, I actually dug the Kill em all sound, its just like buzz saw ... Will certainly try it out :)

Wizards was only one of the amps used on load/reload.
You need even vox acs, lol. Along with anything bob rock and hetfield tried. The mesa mark IIC+ was the staple, trem-o-verb, the wizard...etc.
I am one of the few that I think the garage.inc is really nothing to write home about. Especially it's electric etc.
Two notable exceptions are really turn the page and mercyful fate medley. Whatever they did there just worked.
