In 89 I was in 7th grade I went to see suicidal tendencies and exodus with my older brother at the channel in Boston . Standing outside waiting These two guys with long hair come talk to us.. saying they were in the opening act and would we like to check out their bus and I was like umm sure. They were so proud and giddy to be on a tour with a bus. Like a little kid in a candy store. Then they played and completely blew everyone off the stage and my mind was blown. That band was pantera and the outgoing strangers inviting me to see their tour bus were Darrell and Vinny Paul.

In ‘93 I saw Pantera at the Orpheum in Boston and met the guitar player for Sacred Reich (opening band) after the show outside smoking a butt. He brought me and my buddy backstage and we actually met and hung out with the whole band. Best night ever!

Pantera technically didn’t split in 2001. They went on Hiatus during 2001, then officially split on 2003, because of Phil. Then in 2004 Damageplan was created. And they created their first album, and went on tours, and then on Dec 8th, Dime was sadly taken from us. RIP Dime

Everyone always gets the Cowboys from Hell era guitar pickups wrong, Dimebag had a Bill Lawrence USA L500R in the neck. It’s even on the album cover if you don’t notice it in the video. A lot of guitar players were trying to get some type of endorsement money back in the day, The cleans were not done with a 59.

I remember first time I ever saw Pantera, it was back in the mid 80's, during the 'glam metal' days, with Terry Glaze on lead vocals. Dime was a monster on guitar, and they basically put on a stadium style show in a small rock club. Dime had this ultra-frizzed out dew, clean-shaven, and wearing spandex (the standard metal look at the time). It wasn't until '92, when I got to see them open for Skid Row, and WOW!!! What a complete difference six years makes. After the show, me and everyone else I was with, we all went to another local club, and who decides to show up? Pantera, and they were the coolest. They jumped up on stage and performed a mini-concert for everyone, even after performing a full (Balls-to-the-WALL) set, earlier. Totally, BAD-ASS!!!

Then later he used to invite me and my friend backstage at Joes Garage before they played. We would talk gear and all kinds of things. I swear he had a few RG80ES heads. He said they were in Pantera. I knew the song ”Walk” but I didn’t know much else. I stay back but he went up to Dimebag and talked to him and told him we were joining the Army. Darrel said thanks for serving and signed some stuff. Thinking back now it was different seeing Vinny and Dimebag on a standard flight. I guess they were just your working class guys trying to earn a living. Made some good money I’m sure but still lived a normal life.

I want to start off by saying thank you for your service to our country. The first video I saw of yours was Jim Root's rig rundown, which was amazing, by the way.
Dime's tone is one of those tones that many people (me included) try to emulate, without success. There's just so much gear to get that adds up to it. But nowadays, said gear is discontinued and crazy expensive. But there's some secret attributes to his tone. The Far Beyond Driven ML's floyd was top mounted, plus that guitar had a maple top which added some brightness (the Dean from hell's floyd was also top mounted, but the body was all mahogany). His USA Bill Lawrence pickups (NOT Bill&Becky Wylde, Dime confirmed this in his '93 clinic video) were flipped. Also in the original Dean from Hell, the neck pickup was a DiMarzio super distortion bridge pickup, but in the neck position. He was always trying to squeeze a little more gain out of everything. Its neck profile was also reshaped. But yea, he basically boosted the shit out of his amp, had a noisegate rack unit, and controlled the signal output with his volume knob.
Sorry I kinda geeked out for a sec lol.

No Dean Dime o flame on tour at the end of pantera, that was during damageplan and it was the only one at the time, a paint job from Rick dubstadt over one of several USA ‘79 mls that dime received as part of his endorsement with Dean. He also had a black one, a Brazilia burst one and a cherry sunburst one that he left the original gold speed knobs on, all brought along on tour with damageplan. Hell o flage was also taken out for damageplan touring, not pantera. Late pantera would be mainly diamond plate and black/silver bevel stealth, culprit, and also the d3 cross, which I’m surprised wasn’t mentioned. Others that made appearances on those final tours were the rebel d3 and the d3 slime, the occasional d3 blue bolt, sometimes he would break out his d3 inferno! Not a lot of pics of that one, but that was one of the coolest dime guitars I’ve ever seen and one of the rarest guitars on the used market today.

    His trend kill tone 🔥
I’d still love a Washburn signature of his.
Side note, the 3ST Stealth with the pointy and black/silver lines (took me all these years to realize) looks like Glenn tipton’s Hamer (painkiller as most people know it.) the black and silver one he started using in 88 for the one we know. The 86 one was different.

I got a pick from one of his shows. Some strings as well. The pick was an aluminum tech pick. It was sharpened to a razor edge from his playing. I'm sure the picks are part of how he got that sound. I used to have a guild star with active pickups and if I used my sisters bass amp as a slave with my two fender deluxe 85 amps I could get his sound. But I had to crank the bass all the way up on the bass amp.

First off, buddy blaze painted the guitar long before he let dimebag borrow it. Second off. The primal concrete sledge was a Washburn. Notice how it has a Washburn and not a dean headstock in the live video?

the Randall RG100HT and RG100ES are the same amplifier, the only difference is the cabinet. ES = Standard head, HT = rack head. It is the same circuit, the same schematic file from randall.

    Man, I love this series!
I'm new to this channel but I've already seen the Kirk Hammett episode, the Jim Root one and the Mick Thompson one.
So, I don't know if it already exists, but I would also love to see a James Hetfield episode and a John Petrucci episode.

When I said I got the dimebag sound. It was a long time ago, but all my friends at the time said how did you get that sound. Part of playing is learning to get the sound you want. At that time I was right into Pantera. So I fucked around with what I had & nailed it. I saw him live twice. Wish I could have met him. This is why certain pedals & amps can do pretty much anything if you know how to do it. I'm just a pub rock player most of the time, BUT that was a sound I really wanted. So I got it.

2:25 wrong. he had the DiMarzio DP100 as the neck pickup in the Dean from Hell. he used Seymour Duncan 59 in the Washburns.

I've been searching far and wide to find out what brand the Concrete Sledge guitar was. Didn't think it was a Dean bc of the headstock, although I know they make one now. But then again th 90's was a bit more lawless regarding copyright stuff. Thanks for a great vid! RIP Dime & Vince!

I don't think it was Buddy Blaze that added the pickups to the Dean from Hell. Dime apparently searched long for pickups he liked, and landed on the Bill Lawrence L500-XL in the bridge, but did not settle for the Duncan 59 BRIDGE in the neck position until much later. In the video for Cowboys from Hell the Dean has a black neck pickup, and I have seen photos of it with an L500 (there was 4 different models) of some sort in the neck during the Power Metal era. To this day the Dean from Hell has a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the neck position.

Everyone gets confused about this guitar but the Sledge was actually a Dean body with a reverse 80's Washhurn neck. The Dean neck was broke and Dime steamed it out and added the Washburn neck then had Ric Duppstadt paint it as we all know it today.
