I have recreated sound design, spoken dialogue and music for this iconic scene which left a lasting impression on me when I was a kid. The sound design of the podracers was the most badass thing to me... twenty years later, I took on the challenge to recreate these sounds.
I tried to stay as close to the original as I could, layering raw synthesized sounds with recordings.
Also, I've put a focus on the sound spatialisation of the podracers. With help of the VST plugin "DearVR Pro", the podracers fly by in binaural 3D audio! This effect only works with headphones.
The musical piece I wrote emphasizes the dramatic curve of the scene and was created with Kontakt libraries.

Thanks a lot for all the kind words! And the incredible amount of views. This was a *HOBBY* project for a school assignment, in no way I tried to match the original sound designer team, let alone the orchestral score. It was done in 5 days in my apartment under immense deadline pressure. I still appreciate all of your criticism, 4 years later and I have learnt much more on the way.

i like sebulbas original pod racer sound, but this is good, well done
I prefer the original mix but I have to say you did a really incredibly changing the total vibe of this scene. It's got a whole different flavor or color of tension that seems to fit in more modern movies, you did a really good job on this. Genuine sound design work here.

I rewatch ep 1 sometimes just to hear the engines on good headphones, its that good

This is really great! Nice work! The funny thing is i thought about the exact same thing, to make re sound design for the whole pod race. I love the original sounds so much, but I wanted it to be even more badass. And you did it :) but I have to say I miss the f1 sounds a bit ;)
Hey thank you for the nice comment. Actually there are some race cars in my mixdown, but yes, they're probably dirt ralley cars and not F1 cars. I plan on posting a make of video of this work, because it was a very long process with loads of small steps..

you outdid yourself on the sound effects here!! it makes this race soo much more energetic for the entire race!! I remember being 5-6 when this movie came out, but I wasnt allowed to watch it before I was like 7-9😂 You just made me remember stuff I thought ai had lost as an adult!! and that is pure nostalgia!! thanks G🔥🎶

This is some incredible work! Obviously, the original is in a class of its own, but your sounds come really close to matching the level of quality put forth by ILM all those years ago!

The original scene makes more sense with the absence of music. It's like you put a song in "Bullit" in the chase scene.
This is reminiscent of what Enzo Ferrari said: there is no better sound than the sound of a car engine.

yeah nothing can touch the original. I did this in a week though, music and SFX. Remember, the original was done by a whole team lol. And they got paid. But back in the day they didnt have badass computers like me now, so I guess it's an even playfield by now.
@@kymatekk It is once you practice the craft a bit more, I was taking some inspiration from the podrace and I actually like some of the things you did, but ya more time, more expertise in the craft can only make things better. Awesome job man!

Relax, it was a school project, I did this all by myself, from scratch, everything. Lets see you try in 5 days to make this scene. Cmon! I was just two years in school at the time, I can outdo this now easily, mr former hobby man. I cant watch this work without feeling bad, I know there is many mistakes in there.
@@kymatekk I know you did. I can sense how you did it. I would like to accept this challenge! Install Cubase and some synths dig out some libraries and install the waves diamond bundle... I am just too busy. Offspring to take care of.
@@kymatekk about feeling bad: only few can sense that. - it's because You spend ours on it and know how it could be... Nevertheless. Great achievements in it, as you didn't copy paste but gave every moment it's unique flavor.
Music was perfect, though some of the mechanical sounds were a little too soft and weak sounding. Nice heave flicks and switches. Loved it though.

Sound design. Probably some sounds mix together with changing parameters like length , pitch, etc.
Basic modus operandi: Create grain pitch shifts from synth sounds, layer with jet engines (you can make those yourself using noise, combfilters, filters, diffusion from certain reverbs like MTurboreverb, distortion) and racing cars. But the main focus is the layering between those elements!
@@kymatekk yeah and the distortion in capital letters if I remember correctly. - also reverse reverb combined with pitching to create the Doppler effect.

All I would say is that the engines sound a little too futuristic given how rough and pushed to the limit they are. Some of the sound beats were a bit out of sync wtih the scenes. I would imagine some pretty well modified jet, and maybe a touch of modified pulse jet sound to add a bit more grunt to them might do well to make them a bit more realistic while still managing to keep some of the character of the vehicles themselves. I understand you did this in a very short period of time, but I say this as more of a longer term project if you decided to really perfect it. Cool to see nonetheless, although as far as soundtrack goes... not sure there is much better than the original there, however your pick was by no means bad. Just gave a different feel that still kept the tension, but lacked some of the pace. Overall a great video though.

Valiant effort but the sounds are off....
They sound tiny and distorted or simply lacking in many ways.
I have done my own take on this you should check out and compare notes as I'm only using basic editing software and I'm a total beginner.
