Duel of the Fates was played during three pivotal moments of the prequels. Moments that would have changed the course of the story dramatically with either outcome. In TPM, it was played during Maul's fight with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, symbolizing the battle for control over the destiny of Anakin Skywalker. That was the first fight for Anakin's fate, and although the light side seemed to win, Qui-Gon's death meant the death of the mentor Anakin deserved, resulting in the Dark Side losing the battle that would ultimately win them the war. The second time was during Anakin's speeder bike trip across Tatooine, in an attempt to find his mother. Here, Anakin's soul, his destiny, is entirely in his hands, and what he ended up finding would test his ability to either let go of his pain, or give into his rage and bring the Dark Side that much closer. Without Qui-Gon (who himself reacted with dread from the netherworld), Anakin couldn't properly process his grief, and it would set up his need to protect Padme from the same fate. The third and final time was here, Yoda vs. Palpatine, the last-ditch effort by the Jedi to stop the Sith before Anakin's fate was sealed forever. Here, Yoda tried to confront the creature that was the Dark Side and cut off its head, potentially freeing Anakin. But the beast proved to be far too strong, and Yoda knew he couldn't risk dying there. Had he carried on, there's a chance he would have died, he would never have learned how to return from beyond through the Force, never would have taught Obi-Wan how to do it, and ultimately, never would have been able to help Obi-Wan guide Luke to undoing the evil of the Sith--an evil that could have been stopped in the past two occasions, had things played out differently. The Duel of the Fates was really the fight for the soul of Anakin Skywalker.
What struck me the first time I saw this was that here we see Yoda with murder on his mind. Here he’s facing a man who has taken everything from not only the Jedi but him personally. Tricked him, killed almost all his friends, and corrupted his apprentice (Dooku). This is more than just Jedi versus Sith. This is personal.
@Michael Stoica umm, in the story that he told Anakin, it was stated that Sidious was taught *everything Plagueis knew about the force* before Sidious killed him. So, that *definitely* means he knows how to cheat death, too. Arguably, that's how Darth Vader survived his and Obi-Wan's battle on Mustafar. A much more plausible explanation than that broken heart stuff that canonically made Padmè die. And to do this (with a bit of Darth Vader's unintentional help), he drained the life force of Padmè Amidala and put it into Darth Vader. The Legend of Darth Plagueis the Wise literally just had the opposite effect when Sidious helped Anakin "cheat death".
@Michael Stoica it certainly seems like he did. It seemed like Lucas wanted to make my theory true when making Episode 3, but wasn't allowed to by the production company for some reason...
You can tell Sidious was having the time of his life with that battle. For the first time in probably his entire life, he gets to fight no-holds-barred after having to hold himself back so much for the sake of his grand plan.

The symbolism of them fighting in the main senate room is excellent. The Jedi and Sith are going toe-to-toe with each other in their most critical conflict of modern times, but the empty pods all around really reflect how ultimately, the galaxy is not seeing. That room represents every member world of the Republic, and its emptiness is a pretty nice metaphor for how none of them know what's going on. Sidious throwing them at Yoda and into each other is an amazing parallel for how he really feels about the planets and people they represent; they're all pawns for him to manipulate to help destroy the Jedi. He doesn't care if he makes them crush each other in the process; he just needs to get rid of his rivals no matter what. At the same time, Yoda throws one back; even the Jedi would regretfully cause the downfall of others to preserve their order if they felt they had to, selfless code or not. Adherence to their morals is no longer an option when extinction is trying to bite them in the throat.
I like to think of that one seat that was thrown at Yoda, that Yoda catches, as a reflection on what the rebellion can do. It only takes one Yoda uses to strike back at Palpatine stronger than his other blows, kinda like how with one region rebellion and getting stronger than the empire and when they fight back, it’s more powerful than the other blows.
Let's be real here, the most badass part of this whole fight is when Yoda starts it by just casually tossing the emperor's bodyguards against the wall like a pair of dirty socks.
Yoda is unique. he is an Epic BadAss, and he looks amazing for being 900-ish ( when 900 yrs old YOU REACH, look as good you will not !) but the only "Goblin Alien thing" is those cells growing between your ears...Do NOT DIS MAAAASTER YODA @!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@@TW__________Sorry, He lost. It wasn't a fatal loss. But to decide the outcome of their battle 2 things to consider. First being in the end Yoda ran away to prevent being destroyed because he fell and more importantly by objective. Palpatine was to become Emperor and have his empire rise with the Sith ruling the Galaxy. Yoda's goal was to stop that from occurring. Granted it doesn't mean Palpatine was more powerful. It just means he won, they appeared to be evenly match to their core and the determining factor seems to be the equal pushback of Yoda's force shield vs Palpatine's force lightening pushed Yoda back further and he fell.
How extremely powerful this scene actually is baffles me. It’s like the ultimate boss battle at the end of the game and of course Palpatine is throwing the very seats of democracy he used in his secret plan to take full control. Doesn’t get more poetic than that.
“If so powerful you are, why leave?” One of my favorite lines in the whole series. Sidious is always talking about power and how the dark side is the path to receive unlimited. @@PascalH9191 Gives even more credence to Yoda's insult. If the dark side is so powerful, then surely the 'chosen one' should have no issue facing Obi-Wan one-on-one.
I thought it was a nice touch to have Palpatine gleefully laughing like a kid when he gets to unleash the force. He's enjoying every second of it and it adds depth to his character and lends credibility to the idea that the Dark Side has an addictive quality.

Interesting Palp’s reaction to Yoda’s first force push. He likely had never experienced that in a long time, someone who could actually knock him off his feet with the force that he couldnt counter
Well, think about it. Besides Darth Vader grabbing him by surprise (since Sidious never actually considered he would ever betray him to save his son), this is the first time ever we see Palpatine actually receiving damage. Dude was so fucking powerful he actually got scared when he realized another being was just as strong, or at least strong enough to endanger his life.
I love how Palpatine tries to run, never in the saga do we see him fear anything but he tried to leave the room instead of facing yoda. Dont fuck with Master Yoda
Well not exactly, he was more or less looking for an enclosed place where Yoda can't just jump around But it was clear that Sidious was disarmed as seen by his lightsaber's absence in the latter half of the duel so yea
@@herpyderpy2869 he def didn’t want to really fight yoda. That’s why sidious was like “damn you survived”. Sidious knew he couldn’t beat yoda in a saber duel so he started to throw shit...even dooku had to distract yoda in order to get away.
But all sith apprentices kill there masters in the end, the rule of 2, how is it miss placed. True Anakin returned to the light in the end so that may be the misplaced line hit the mark.
Yoda knew Anakin was the prophecy. So yes, even though Anakin had turned, the prophecy was still the prophecy, the will of the Force will be done, and so misplaced are Sidious's hopes in Anakin.
No, he definitely did not. Yoda and Obi-Wan wanted Luke to kill Vader and the Emperor in the OT. Which makes the prequels not really make a lot of sense. The Force was not originally something that made you into a superhero. Yoda and Obi-Wan were simply too old, so they wanted Luke to do it.
@@LITTLE1994 The funny thing is that Sidious WAS a coward. Even after boasting about destroying the Jedi Order, while really having almost no part in it, he tries to run as soon as Yoda starts to fight back...
Whilst the fight ended before a winner could be crowned, Yoda clearly had the upper hand multiple times. He even caused Palpatine fear and distress when he reflected his force lightning.
This was such an epic fight. For anyone who found themselves here and doesn't know Star Wars of all the Sith and Jedi across nine films and countless books these are 1A and 1B on anyone and everyone's top list of powerful characters and for them to fight to the death in that place at that time was like the stars moons and planets all lining up deciding the fate of the entire galaxy. The ultimate good guy vs ultimate bad guy scene in film history.
This is SIDIOUS. Palpatine had to hide himself for decades. Hiding his true feelings and his true desires. The amount of patience it took to get to this point. That’s why he is laughing uncontrollably. He is finally free here. This was the release of Sidious.
Revenge of the Sith did really well showcasing the greatest of the Jedi vs the greatest of the Sith, without it overshadowing the true story which was the duel between Ani and Obi happening in tandem.
So let me get this straight... I’m supposed to believe the same guy who held his own against Yoda, the 900 year old Jedi Grandmaster, in both lightsaber and force combat.... gets clapped by an undertrained scavenger because she had two lightsabers? ... It’s treason then
All the Jedi basically gave her their power for that moment. The scene wasnt handled very well though, people mightve understood it if they showed those jedi as ghosts actually giving Rey their power, not just speaking to her as voices in her head
I love the little things that Lucas did in this scene. Yoda was not arrogant. He knew Palpatine had the high ground and he knew he was bested. Anakin’s arrogance costed him his limbs and encased him in a metal suit. Yoda knew when the fight was over. Anakin didn’t.
Yoda was a wise leader, this is why had to leave because Sidious had the advantage at that moment. Anaking would be like "you understimate my powet", and proceeds to get rekt
No Yoda was always on the level of Palpatine and even stronger in most scenarios. He left because palpatines troops must have been coming and it would take too long to defeat him.
Grogu and yoda aren't comparable. Its like saying Anakin is such a powerful Jedi, therefore all humans must be powerful Jedi. Yoda is extraordinary, both in innate potential and through learnt skills. Grogu probably isn't.
To be fair tho Palpatine wasn't even fighting, he just used force lightning on her which Rey deflected with her lightsaber If Palpatine was in his prime (as in 1v1 lightsaber battle) he would have god stomped Rey
For a lot of fans who grew up on the OT, there was this big debate about if Yoda was BSing Luke in ESB about the dark side not being stronger, just "quicker, easier, more seductive." A lot of people thought it was just Jedi BS because pretty much all we see in the OT is that the dark side definitely looks stronger. Then we get to see this fight which pretty much puts the whole thing to bed. Yoda goes toe to toe with the Emperor and even gets the upper-hand on a few occasions. It pretty much ends up in a draw. There's a lot of these little details that people who grew up with the Prequels can't appreciate because they had all of it as one unit.
@@logicaldude3611 Dark side is stronger normally because it’s you using the Force to enact your will, so you can use it to grow stronger if that’s your desire Light side is the Force using you to enact its will, so you don’t have the freedom to do whatever you want with no limitations Light side is the right path, but usually a Sith will be stronger than a Jedi because the former isn’t restricted by any code or moral compass
Yoda, for all his wisdom, lost. He is not supposed to be physically powerful, but supposed to be wisest. He underestimated the sith, big time. Palpatine did a fantastic comeback and ruled with ease for the next 20 years.
Yoda actually won and this is proven when sidious looked at yoda with pure terror in his face he knew yoda was more powerful then him and Overall yoda had the last laugh when Anakin tossed him down that core shaft due to what yodas apprentice luke did
I just love this shot at 2:23 when they rise into the senate chamber. The ultimate fight between good and evil, where the Emperor finally shows his true colors in front of the Galactic Senate, and nobody can see it. Just as everybodyy was blind to his machinations for all those years, now there is nobody around to witness his true self.
I really like how he throws all of the senate seats at yoda like how the sith caused chaos and conflict throughout the galaxy to undermine the jedi over time.
Fun fact: Sidious was very scared to fight yoda this whole time because he knew yoda could beat him with a lightsaber. That’s why he tried hard to gain distance and only use the force on him because he knew that was the only way he could beat him.
Yoda also disarmed palpatine during their lightsaber duel. It’s funny as palpatine knew his only choice was using the force but when palpatine is using his maximum power on yoda, yoda just absorbs it with the look of I can take this all day and palpatine looks shocked and afraid. One of my favourite fights in Star Wars, it just epitomises how palpatine had already won and was obviously only scared of yoda who could kill him and ruin his plans.
This is actually false, in the novelization from the moment they started fighting Sidious began to grow with the dark side as a result of the fighting. Yoda about halfway through realised that Sidious was getting stronger and he would've lost, which is why he fled at the end Yoda would've beaten him in lightsaber combat though, this is true. Palpatine has mastered all seven forms but actually despises lightsaber combat and believes it's beneath him, which is why he resorted to using the force exclusively. You can see the same pattern in his fight with Maul in TCW
@@darthdistortion1934 That is not really how it works. Getting stronger in the force doesn't just mean stronger force abilities, it also means being stronger in lightsaber duels, especially considering that Darth Sidious and Yoda used the force to enhance their physical capabilities during combat. This, paired with Darth Sidious being a master in all 7 forms and thus also being the master of the form which most naturally countered Yoda's and would have been most suitable for the terrain means that it would be difficult to foresee who was better with the lightsaber. Darth Sidious despised lightsabers, but was by no means not one of the best lightsaber users.
@@darthdistortion1934 Sounds like the Novelization really changed the context ngl. Sidious looked like he just barely won in the movie and scene above.
Here we must take into account that Sidious initially hates lightsabers. Yes, he is one of the strongest duelists, but he lost Windu and almost certainly would have lost Yoda, only the circumstances were different.
I always wondered why Palpatine was laughing but this was probably one of the few times in his life that he met someone who was equally as skilled and powerful as him.

Yep they've aged quite well. Everyone wanted to see this part go down so it was over hyped. Seeing it again after several years makes me happy....we might have expected more but it was entertaining. I don't recognize the new stuff as Star Wars. Lucas isn't involved and the writing is wretched. The 6 episodes stand alone on their podium.
The most gangster thing is Yoda blocking Sidious and definitely probably for the first time in hundreds of years, taking this fight personally. He lost so many friends colleagues and those he grew with. Yoda wanted beef and showed that he was willing to cook and serve.
I had chills running down my spine the first time I saw this scene at the theater; it was glorious. Finally being able to see Yoda as the bad ass he always was
More like finally after a thousand years fates collide and the Grand Master of the Jedi Order and the Dark Lord of the Sith duel for the fate of the galaxy and the Chosen One 🤷🏻
2:23 I love this shot. Not only cause it looks amazing, but this is where Sidious made his speeches to the whole Republic disguised as the chancellor. And unfortunately no one was around to see him revealed as the Sith Lord
"If so powerful you are, why leave?" What makes this line, and the fight as a whole, so potent is the fact that Yoda is actually fighting to kill his opponent. Now Jedi are taught from the start that they should always avoid fighting and never intend to kill, so the fact that Yoda is going against this and trying his damned hardest to kill the wrinkled, cackling old bastard says something about how serious this is.
I think it's mentioned somewhere in the lore that Jedi of the time sought to destroy or kill anything associated with the dark side also gives us an explanation for obi wan and Yoda giving up on Anakin when he's Vader were as Luke doesn't immediately try to outright kill any dark sider he actually gives them a chance for redemption or at least that's what I read somewhere once lol idk I could be wrong asf lmao
@@tonybaloney4342 In fairness, very few who fall to the dark side ever go back and what Anakin did when he became Vader was so unspeakably evil that it's hardly surprising that Yoda and Obi-Wan thought he was beyond redemption. Plus, those who wield the dark side have the potential to plunge the entire galaxy into chaos (the Sith and the Drengir, for example) so the Jedi's ruthlessness in combating and suppressing it is justified.
Exactly this. I’m not surprised that some folks still don’t like ROTS just because it’s a prequel film (the two before it weren’t anything special at all) but it is honestly one of my favourites alongside the originals. This scene is amazing.
@Taramafor Haikido True, but the thing is that Jedi almost never seek to kill their opponent. With them, the opponent fleeing is an acceptable end to a fight. Yoda blocking Sidious' escape and directly challenging him is not the typical Jedi way. He wants to fight and kill him, which shows just how serious the situation is.
At this point I can't believe there's no other sith around. Considering everything in all 6 movies centers around the republic worlds and even endor. I firmly believe that korroban or even dromund kaas have sith on them but ever since the whole rule of two nonsense they've most likely kept hidden and are just living out thier lives in relative peace and seclusion. It was never stated in the movies but I sincerely doubt the jedi were the only remaining force users left. I'm positive there was still sith around.
@@BansheeKing22 I agree. Given that the Sith as a group were dead for hundreds of years, there would be very small collectives of them keeping a low profile. I would love to see a film or short show about how the few Sith survived during the republic and how the remaining Jedi lived after Order 66.

Palpatine destroying the parliamentary seats and trashing the senate hall to symbolise the end of republican democracy and the beginning of his own imperial dictatorship, nicely done.

Everyone's talking about the guards but I think one of the funniest parts is at 0:46 where Yoda and Darth Sidious are fighting to the death and the Grand Vizier casually walks out like nothing has happened.
So noticed a lot of comments about how Yoda should have won or how it was even, and actually it wasn't. The novel does a much better job at explaining this since it reveals Yoda's internal thoughts during this fight. During his fight with Sidious, he realized no matter what the outcome the Jedi would lose. If Sidious won he could just tell everyone Yoda had tried to kill him and the Jedi were taking over just like he said earlier when he formed the empire and thus only making it more believable that he was right and the Jedi were evil. But even if Yoda won the galaxy would just see it as the Jedi taking out their leader and wanting to rule just like Sidious had said earlier when he formed the empire. No matter the outcome that day Yoda and the Jedi had lost. The only way to win was to play the long game and let Sidious expose himself as the tyrant he truly was even though it meant letting evil rule for a time

Yoda about halfway through realised that Sidious was getting stronger and he would've lost, which is why he fled at the end
Yoda would've beaten him in lightsaber combat though, this is true.
Plus, those who wield the dark side have the potential to plunge the entire galaxy into chaos (the Sith and the Drengir, for example) so the Jedi's ruthlessness in combating and suppressing it is justified.
@@samalvey8168 I'm not saying it unjustified lol I'm just stating the reasoning or I guess giving a bit of background from what I've heard
This is something Disney can never be able to duplicate because they're incompetent.
they try to inject their perverted agenda into everything.
The grandmaster of the Jedi order versus the only sith lord in the galaxy. A duel for generations to remember.
Vader literally exists?
@@enoch2066 at this point I'd only consider him a sith apprentice. Not a full fledged sith lord yet.
@@grayski3324 hell I'd love to see a scenario sorta like the knights expac for swtor but in the case of a sith, male or female and a jedi male or female still kept to their philosophies but fell in love and had a child or children with which they could both train in both sides of the force and lived thier lives outside of imperial and republic space. I always found the whole ancient enemies become friends or lovers an interesting story type. Plus being outside the known space in places never before explored would make for interesting stories.

Obi-Wan cutting Anakin's legs and arms: "oh, I dont think so"

Well Lord Vader took hi's revenge upon obi wan later on. Karma is a bitch. 😎
This duel is so eye catching. Literally the most powerful Jedi and Sith in their time fighting each other.
In their time..... yoda is 900 years old.
@@Tesseract95 they didn't say that Yoda was in his PRIME, just that they were both the most powerful in that specific moment.
@Antun Šturlić well technically Windu was dead already at this point lol
@@IMbirdieful Technically WIndu is NOT dead and he kicked Sidious ass, something yoda couldn't even do. George Lucas said Sidious didn't throw the fight BTW.
Windu could use anyone's powers against them, he was pretty much unbeatable... until that little bitch betrayed him!
I love how much fun Palps is having during this fight. He’s been waiting his entire life for this moment and the Sith had been waiting for centuries. Meanwhile there was a legit chance he could have lost but he’s just cracking up the entire time!
he was afraid too!
Papa Palps is living his best life.
Palps laughs but he’s also a coward, he tried to leave the fight before Yoda got in his way. He knows that Yoda is a legitimate threat to him.
@@verbalkint4258 true.
If you ever feel useless, remember that backflipping yoda uses a stick to walk
It's part of the theatrics. You'd never expect an old smol green guy with a cane to ever do a quadruple backflip and kick you in the face, would you?
"use walking cane when you are walking so your enemy think you are weak green old man"

You don't expect an Olympic gymnast to do back-flips to the store do you?
he uses the force to move fast backflip etc u see him only do that when fighting

Palpatine destroying the parliamentary seats and trashing the senate hall to symbolise the end of republican democracy and the beginning of his own imperial dictatorship, nicely done.
Symbolic asf
You really have to wonder what the senate thought the next time they came here. Did palpatine tell them that Yoda tried to kill him, or did he keep it a secret and they were just left to ponder
I think he was only using it to attack him lol

Yoda just absolutely dismissing the imperial guard is severely underrated. He was p*ssed at having felt so many Jedi massacred.
When the nursing home only has 1 serving of chocolate pudding left
😂
The only way to win was to play the long game and let Sidious expose himself as the tyrant he truly was even though it meant letting evil rule for a time
good point
But I think they meant in terms of lightsaber combat and force ability, not politics
Yeah I remember that while reading it. Yoda realized he had been overconfident before the fight.
The novel also explains that Yoda was overpowering sidious in this whole fight and even disarmed him
@@spicyclips552 yes🤣🤣🤣😂😂

I like how Sidious calls Yoda 'Master' even though he wants to kill Yoda, respect amongst hated enemies. 👍

He is mocking, but Yoda did it first. Called him Emperor, and then Darth Sidious which means Lord Sidious
I think there is mutual respect between 2 of the most powerful force users at that time
