    Wish you had made this 4 years ago. I tightened the ball joint nut so much it cracked the steering knuckle. Last time I did a repair like that it was on iron and it didn't matter, this is soft aluminum! I had to wait for the wrecker to find a replacment knuckle. Your comment on just make it tight is very very true.

      I wouldn't touch the ball joint during this repair just unbolt the struct bolts and remove the brake and rotors for more clearance. You wouldn't have to fight the balljoint.

    I watched another video or two on a 2002 LeSabre and they say it's a 34mm axle nut which is what I ordered, I should be doing mine this weekend or next week but that one looks to be the same as the others not a little 27mm.

  • @kugelsicher5721
    @kugelsicher5721 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yo. That axle nut is probably a 27mm. 1-1/16 just happens to be very, very close to the same size and works because of the oversize tolerances in the socket. Good video, though. Showed me everything I needed to know. Cheers!!

    Good video. Regarding the Lesabre CV axle replacement: If not familiar with the vehicle, I think a viewer would miss that you (seemingly) loosened the 3 upper strut bolts in order to have enough "wiggle room" to move the steering knuckle/wheel to side to gain access to the axle. (I don't think you mentioned that). Interesting that most other video posters instead removed the lower two knuckle to strut bolts in order to get the "wiggle room". Could you comment on why you chose that route? Easier perhaps, or maybe eliminates having to get an aligment? I'm about to install my axles.

    • @LockersGarage
      @LockersGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not loosen the 3 upper strut bolts nor the two lower strut bolts as I wanted to preserve the alignment. Watch the bake hose and ABS wiring though!

    I was installing a new hub/bearing on my 01 LeSabre and I noticed the tell tale grey/green grease splatter around wear the CV axle inserts into the transmission. The odd thing was, I did not notice any visible tears in the boot. Would the tear be in a fold in the boot I am not seeing? Thanks for the video.

    • @LockersGarage
      @LockersGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could be a burp of grease and not necessarily a tear. We use this vehicle for a lot of Pro-Cut lathe training and the CV operates at quite an extreme angle. They always tear in a fold in my experience.

    You've got the car on a lift. I wonder if there would be enough room to pull down on the pry bar to re-seat the ball joint if it was jacked up to floor jack height? I've got a demolition bar that's thicker and longer than the ones you used, and should make that part of the job easier. Since it's longer and won't bend somewhat. Did you remove the steering rod end bearings?

    • @LockersGarage
      @LockersGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should have enough room on jack stands. Perhaps you could turn the steering wheel for better access?

  • @joshuapennekamp4333
    @joshuapennekamp4333 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason why it explodes on that side, and it keeps breaking on that side is because of a bad front engine mount. If you can shake the engine by hand, and it easily moves, it's the front engine mount. I replaced the front engine mount and the cv joint, and now my cv joint doesn't break all the time anymore. It's a very common problem.

    • @LockersGarage
      @LockersGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good information- will check it next time this car is on the rack. We use it as a brake lathe training car as well and the CVs have to operate at an extreme pitch when using the Pro-Cut on-vehicle lathe. After the 15th brake job something has to give :-)

    Good job but could do without the music. Could the axle be bad if not grease leaking? Mine looks perfect but getting slight vibration in the steering wheel at 50 mph and at 70 mph. Rebalanced all wheels 3 times and alignment done AND rechecked again. All new tires but front tires are showing slight cupping already. They're only a few months old. Tierods and balljoints checked out tight. The right side axle seal that goes into the transmission IS weeping A bit but not bad at all. Nothing that would cause my issue I don't think. But no leaking from the boots. A real head scratcher. I hear that on these cars that the axles are a common problem. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.8. Also, before installing the new axle, can you replace the seal that goes into the transmission or do you have to take off the trans cover to get at the seal?

    • @LockersGarage
      @LockersGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do it both ways on the seal as the diff cover is removable on the 4t65E transmission. On it's predecessor, you had to work at it with the trans in the vehicle. A little bit of a pill. Axles can go bad without showing any signs of grease leaking or any damage to the boot. They will click typically when you turn the wheel.
      Have you checked your shocks (cupping issue)
      Wheel bearings could also be the cause of your vibration and/or a bent wheel/hub. You might safely support the vehicle on the front control arms and put it in drive and see if things are wobbling...

      Im not a mechanic by trade and no pro but i do all my own work on my car. So i have had same problem with my buick 2000 lesabre. Im almost 100 percent confident it is my passenger side cv axle. Two years ago i hit a curb ran up over the damn thin g on the passenger side. Been having wooble/ vibration ever since. Im almost positive your problem is the same as mine. Now that i see how easy a job it is.... Im going for it. You should to i just looked it up and 1a auto sells the cv axles at a damn good price not to mention they do free shipping. I cant wait to rid the wooble. If this doesn't fix your problem then the only other possible thing i could think of is your lower control arm. I hope this helps.
