Great video, thanks. The million dollar question I have is, if there are no signs of grease or really bad loose play, how to tell which inner cv joint is the culprit? Our '09 Toyota Sienna van has a slight shake/vibration at around 65MPH. I think that might be about 110KMH. I'm not hearing any noise at all when turning sharp turns when wheel lock to lock. CV joints usually make a clicking sound when they're going bad so I'm thinking the problem might be the tires. @@klujics123 We replaced the tires and that helped a lot. Still a very slight shake. I'm thinking maybe a tie rod. The other van, our Town and Country, started shaking pretty bad and the passenger side inner tie rod was worn out. Put on a new one and it's goo now. Good luck with your van.
Had this issue for past 4 years, not terrible vibration but enjoying enough for me to drive 70Mph on trips not the 75-80 that I should. Tires and wheels etc all check out ok. My problem is similar. I get an intermittent vibration or wobble through the steering column at speeds above 65-70 MPH. It's more noticeable when I have the A/C running and on long stretches where the highway bends slightly and I have to keep the wheel turning. On straightaways and with no A/C, the vibration goes away almost completely. I'm suspecting motor mounts or drive shafts because I've already replaced other suspension components that were in fact faulty.

Interesting video. I was getting a clunk from my drive shaft tripod bearing on my campervan so I had the driveshaft replaced. Clunk gone and I thought all was well, however, I went on a 1500mile roadtrip and towards the end of the journey I noticed a vibration develop, the same as in this video. Nice, thorough diagnosis of the vibration problem. What would you check next if your front drive shafts have been replaced twice in a year, but the vibration is still present during acceleration or under load? That's my current situation on my 2011 Toyota Highlander FWD with 260K miles on it.

Probably not what you want to hear, but if the vibration goes away when you release throttle, your transmission or differential might be on the way out. Check the trans/diff oil level and color. If it's brown and smells toasty, might be worth a drain and refill. Avoid a "flush" service at the shop.

I was driving cross-country flat level road doing 75mph and recall exactly when it just started to violently vibrate, I slowed down to 60 and almost went away, 55mph it's gone . Back up to 60 and started again , increased speed to 75mph and put it in neutral and it continues to vibrate until it goes below 60mph and goes away eliminating the trans as a source. Brand new front cv and put brand new tires w/balancing. It still happens like clock work. Center rear shaft bearing is intact but can slightly move if pushing it up/down side to side but the rubber retainer is all there. Rear cv axles have up and down play at the rear differential input which I ordered new ones to replace as well for the mid shift bearing. Only other thing I can think of at this point is the differentials them selves , going to put the vehicle up on the lift and do a high speed test and do a visual of the underside to see where the problem is originating from. Apparently after seeing so many others with this exact issue and not even the Certified GM mechanics can't figure out and GM Corp is aware of it , their Engineers don't know what the hell they are doing and need to be standing in the unemployment line ! I am getting rid of this POS vehicle. I had a brand new Chevy Silverado, never abused it in any way. In one year I had two rear differentials go bad for no reason. I dumped it and bought a brand new Mercury Villager...My wife was broadside by a drunk driver, the vehicle had 678,000 miles on it and the engine purred like a kitten and never ever had a problem with it. It had a v6 nissan engine !
Excellent video...i have a vibration that i feel on a 4x4 vehicle...feels like the front end and when examining the cv axles in the front the boots are torn and grease is everywhere... My question is since these are not being driven (i keep it in normal rear wheel drive) could it still be the cause of my vibration concern?
I get a vibration noise fist gear to second (straight line) accelerate to about 30mph and it clears then back off and get a dull growl only happens when in gear/driving. No click's, but defo a vibration from passenger side (UK N/S)
I think i have an alignment issue. New wheels, all balanced, no bent or leaking cv axles and not clicking. No pulsing in the steering at full lock low speed. Nothing while accelerating. Feeling is in the brake pedal at 65-70 and theres heavyness in the steering turning left and a slight drift to the right. Gets worse as a slow down from 70 till it goes at 60. Front discs and pads are new. There is a click as the slack is taken up by the dif, as it happens when the car is in the air and you rotate either wheel forward or backward.
Ok question, I am getting a salvage OEM passenger side axle for Lexus RX330, maybe has 100,000 miles on the donor vehicle, but no rust. Is that bearing (maybe called a carrier bearing? not sure) Is it replaceable on the axle? If so, how? If it needs grease, how would I press grease into it if it is in good condition? In a warm climate, what is life expectancy of that bearing?
Mine does it but only when it rains or very wet roads. Usually when it rains. It’s so odd but nothing looks visibly broken or torn. Everything looks fine.
I have a vibration felt at highway speeds...it is not just under load though it also happens on deceleration as well....could it be a bearing in the front axle disconnect causing this? I'm narrowing it down to 4 possibilities... Bearing in the front axle disconnect housing is bad (there is a bunch of play there) Tire balance issue Struts Bad cv joint Bad front driveshaft
The vibration on my car starts at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour and ends at 110 120 kilometers per hour. But the problem is that the vibration is constant. It does not depend on loading or unloading. Am I moving up or down? I even tried putting it in neutral and the vibration is still there. I will check out everything you said here and more. I have been to many auto repair shops, many mechanics examined my car and said that everything is fine with me, but no one said what caused the vibration. What else can I look at, what do you think can give such a constant vibration?

In a rear wheel drive vehicle should one of the axles have in and out play like from the differential to the wheel should it move a bit ? Mine does and I am experiencing vibration like over highway speeds.....
Hi my ford focus had a vibration as soon as starting and driving so i replaced all of the engine mounts and now it vibrates even more i'm hoping this will stop soon, also now i can hear a click once only on passenger side when i gently accelerate, could this be because of the engine was sitting lower due to bad mounts? fixing one problem might have caused another with the possible bad driveshaft CV joint? Our '09 Toyota Sienna van has a slight shake/vibration at around 65MPH. I think that might be about 110KMH. I'm not hearing any noise at all when turning sharp turns when wheel lock to lock. CV joints usually make a clicking sound when they're going bad so I'm thinking the problem might be the tires. Your video tells me there could be other issues and how to check it out better before replacing an axle or anything. I had a car once that had the same problem and I put tires on it and the problem went away. Thanks for the well explained information.
Did you finally find/ fix the issue? I have an 08 with the exact same problem at 65 mph.
My theory is struts or mounts, they are worn, most folks driving the car would not feel the wear but it's the only thing I can think of.
My Chevy Colorado shakes at 75+. Like a built in governor. I hate driving faster bc it feels off
Thank You for this awesome piece
I do shake extensively at 100kmph then shaking vanishes and comes back at 120-130kmph
Can seem to figure out what exactly it is …
Cv Axle Is Fine(added some more greese)
Tyres Are Good
There is a little play in ball joint so I replaced it new ball joints
Test drive and it still shakes at 120kmph
What could probably be the cause..?
Have not checked steering rack yet
Have you worked out what the problem was in the end?
I’ve spend too much money already and don’t want to keep changing parts
Perfect step by step diagnosis
Excellent. Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise 🔥

@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarageFair play to you buddy, it would seem you really do know your stuff. Unfortunately I’m having to resort to TH-cam videos for diagnosing something my local garage can’t figure out.
I have a constant clicking noise coming from behind the wheels that gets faster the quicker you drive but no clunking when turning. I also have that wobble at around 60mph.
So far both wheel bearings have been replaced, new tires that got balanced, wheel alignment, no play when rocking the wheel top & bottom, side to side so I’m guessing the next step is to replace both drive shafts.
Hopefully this will get rid of the wobble and that annoying clicking noise. 👍
Any update?
@@ryanware2183Turned out to be out of round wheels. Had them straightened by a shop but they're still not perfectly round, which still causes vibrations. Spent too much money on this crap already. Probably would've been better off buying two new rims.
Vibration under load, disappeared if you coast. Either the driveshaft was very poor quality or possibly it didn't have any grease put in which would account for it's rapid fail. Time to investigate !
Did you ever get to the bottom of the vibration under load? I have as well on my camper (T5)
@@BreakingTheBlankCarping I'm pretty sure the nearside driveshaft needs replacing. I should have done both at the time. I still have the vibration but generally drive at speeds that avoid it. I will get the driveshaft replaced and hopefully it will cure it.
God bless you. Simple but detailed by a professional
very detailed analysis and explanation.
thank you. My Swift is behaving the same.. on motorway at 110 kmph + it starts vibrating only when accelerating.
Mine too when I take of my leg from accelerator above 100 km.. vibration can be seen in the mirror
What is the solution?

GREAT approach and thought process thanks for sharing.

Very informative video. I Checked my CV joints and they are fine, but I still get vibration. Tyres are balanced. Can bad front shock absorbers cause vibration and sway/instability at high speeds?

Thank you so much for your chanel because watching you i fixed a problem in my car
Thank you. This is exactly the issue that I am having. I appreciate your help!
Nice, thorough diagnosis of the vibration problem. What would you check next if your front drive shafts have been replaced twice in a year, but the vibration is still present during acceleration or under load? That's my current situation on my 2011 Toyota Highlander FWD with 260K miles on it.
Can be your rack and pinion, struts and/or strut mount, engine mount(s),, stabilizer links etc
@Andre Evans Have replaced everything on your list except rack and pinion. Will check, but I don't think that's it either.
@@craigfulton6292 balance and align tires. Ensure none of your rims aren't bent/ damaged, tires are worn evenly. Rack and pinion could be suspect, engine mounts, throttle body might need cleaning, ball joints
Probably not what you want to hear, but if the vibration goes away when you release throttle, your transmission or differential might be on the way out. Check the trans/diff oil level and color. If it's brown and smells toasty, might be worth a drain and refill. Avoid a "flush" service at the shop.

Hi Gerard. Thanks for your videos. It has been very helpful to me.
I have a 2021 Toyota Highlander platinum AWD. It vibrates anytime I accelerate and the vibration is very noticeable and I can feel it. I mostly feel it from the hud that is the engine side. I changed the 4 tires, did wheel alignment and balancing but it’s still vibrates . Please any suggestions on what could be causing this vibration? Thanks
Take it to the dealer
did you figure it out?
Very helpful content so now I'm able to start to find the source on my Range Rover L322 the vibrations coming from the back.
Excellent video, this helped a lot! Any cv axle brands you can recommend for aftermarket? Luckily enough for me I have an 01 Toyota celica gts with the same issue
I had a vibration problem at high speed on a rear-wheel drive vehicle. The problem was found to be a bad Universal-joint
from ypur driveshaft? was the vibration in the steering wheel
Did you feel it in the steering wheel?
My experience, bad cv joints are loose or clatter when turning-torn boots usually
I had knocking sound coming from Peugeot 208 and vibrating/ shuddering when driving braking..had wheel bearing replaced on nsf passenger side..car pulling to the left when driving…car went back to garage…told cv boot clips that I had put on 8 mths ago broken..so had them replaced…had several mechanics looking at the car..
Super helpful. Thanks a lot! I'm about to buy a camper - fiat Ducato 290 Globetrotter Dethleffs, 1992 - and after two test dives the same problem as you show it is there. Would you or anyone reading be able to guide me to the right workshop/ forums to find out how to solve this issue with that model?
Love the method of diagnosing.
I subscribed cuz I’m having the same problem on my 2018 car
Thank you for making this video it's very educational.
Everything looks fine.
kick ass video its like you diagnosed the car for me!!!
KEEPEM COMING
Thanks exactly the problem of my car.
I have a vibration felt at highway speeds...it is not just under load though it also happens on deceleration as well....could it be a bearing in the front axle disconnect causing this? I'm narrowing it down to 4 possibilities...
Bearing in the front axle disconnect housing is bad (there is a bunch of play there)
Tire balance issue
Struts
Bad cv joint
Bad front driveshaft
will a bad axle cause the car to buck as your driving? or cause the Transmission Lock up Solenoid to overheat?
The vibration on my car starts at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour and ends at 110 120 kilometers per hour. But the problem is that the vibration is constant. It does not depend on loading or unloading. Am I moving up or down? I even tried putting it in neutral and the vibration is still there. I will check out everything you said here and more. I have been to many auto repair shops, many mechanics examined my car and said that everything is fine with me, but no one said what caused the vibration. What else can I look at, what do you think can give such a constant vibration?
Thank you so much. I experienced similar problem before
Hi there,
Thanks for your video. For your case is that need to change whole assembly or only the inner CV joint ?

same car but at first gear I feel a vibration on the accelerator pedal....what would be the issue? high speed is fine. its a manual.
He is using kilometers, not miles per hour; so he is driving at around 60-70 mph.
I have a 2018 Infinity QX60 that has a humming vibration on my steering wheel at 60 mph. New balanced tires, wheel bearing good at front driver side tire. Drive shaft looks good. Car has 48K miles and can’t figure it out.
i have changed struts, stabilizer link, rack and pinion link but at 60 to 70 mph speed front driver side wheel is vibrating or shaking. Also when I apply break in high speed. wheel make clunky noise on bumps. Thinking maybe its because cv axle but not sure. cv axle has 1mm foreplay on both side .
