John Deere 214 Mower Deck Belt Routing

- Lets take a look at how the mower deck belt on my John Deere 214 is routed. The mower deck belt routing is a little confusing and I had trouble figuring it out myself at one point so hopefully this will save you some time. Thanks to one of you comments for suggesting this video I do my best to help out :-)

I run belt above that "L" bracket under the inside pulley
So it looks like the belt is routed on the tensioner V pulley outside of the retaining guide. Visible at 1:58. Do i have this wrong my belts are taring up a bit fast. the last one lasted one lite season.
Actually looking at the video again I had the belt over the guide, it is supposed to be under I missed that when filming. I had the tensioner off at the time so it was looser then normal...If you are still having breaking issues and not using a Kevlar belt I would swap to Kevlar as it made a big difference on my tractor with stopping belts breaking. Also check the spindles are moving free and the 2nd belt is not in need of replacement or blades needing to be sharpened any extra force adds up to break the belt.
My 210 keeps twisting the belt and throwing it. I don’t think it was an original belt and I went down the street to the lawn mower repair shop and all they had was a random 79.3” by 1/2” belt I tried that and I ended up throwing and then snapping that one. How tight is the tensioner supposed to be? I just ordered a new flat side pulley and John Deere belt I’m trying to find the v pulley. They look old so I figure I’ll replace both of those pulleys when I put the JD belt on. The mower deck is repainted and the pulleys feel nice and smooth when I turn them by hand I can feel the resistance of the belt but that’s it. Mower deck is a HO39G on the serial tag.
🤔 hmmm I had issues with belt breaking on this mower for a while too until I swap the Kevlar belts. I think what happens is the belt stretch slightly during the initial wearing and that causes them to derail and break... The Kevlar belts are much stronger and resist this issue way better. I replaced both the belt on the mower deck and the one going to it from the tractor with Kevlar. The other issue with the tensioner on this tractor is that it tends to loosen itself so I found that over tightening it helps with that a bit basically till the spring is stretched enough to keep the adjuster from spinning back out... Hope that helps 😉

What size is that belt. Are they the same size no matter what deck you’ve got? Or what mower ad long as it’s a 200 series
Check out this video should be same for all 200s I think...I have it ran it as a 81, but I have another person that says they run a 84-1/2 ...I don't have the tractor anymore to investigate the issue...

Check out discrimination of this video(link) I put some numbers in it ... hopefully that will help there is a online manual for this mower somewhere too I have found before...not sure where link went though..
i have 112 john deere tractor with mower deck does it hook up the same way
I believe they are similar, but have not had the chance to look at a 112 so best bet is to see if you can find a owners manual online... I only found a service one in my short search...

Edit: start off with a 5/8 x 84” that’s what mine was after the 5th try lol!! & now I’m to drunk to go for the 6th time thanks😂
How to take or check lights
Ok you DEFINITELY should be using a 5/8 thickness V belt for the inner deck belt which is why his numbers are all fkd up!! And why I’ve been to tractor supply 5 fkn times today lol!! 5/8 x 84” I think will fit FINALLY cause the 81” 5/8 is about 3” short uugghhhh!!!
There's allot a variation in the Years for this run of tractor on belt size. See video description.. also the belts I use are Kevlar belts so they work way better...
