Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 review: Good notepad, bad notebook

  • While the rest of the industry may have given up on making premium Android tablets, Samsung isn't quitting just yet. It still believes Google's software has the potential to power superthin and light 2-in-1s, and so it recently unveiled a new version of its hybrid tablet. The Galaxy Tab S6 is a 10.5-inch device that's designed for people who need to get work done on the go. It comes with an upgraded S Pen that features so-called Air Gestures for remote control of your apps; enhanced handwriting recognition to sort out your notes; and a redesigned keyboard cover (sold separately). As with previous Samsung tablets, you can expect a beautiful display, long battery life and capable performance. What really stands out about the Tab S6, though, is the S Pen, which is included in the $649 price. The stylus makes the device a really good digital notepad, but the Tab S6 still isn't quite the "laptop with the mobility of a tablet" that Samsung claims it is.

You can stick it magnetically on the right bottom side of the tablet, but it doesn't charge the S-pen though.
    8:33
You can use Samsung's Native Browser if you want to instantly launch Desktop version of web.

Oh c'mon, the screenshot button is only one on the right side, the other is just a Notifications icon to tell you if you already taken a screenshot. Please do more research.

Complaining about the lack of "innovation" in a product that literally stands alone in the tablet space with a true desktop. Then nitpicking on the double screenshot buttons, or on having to click a toggle once to force unoptimized apps to resize... These could use some polishing, sure, but are all very minor complaints in a product that offers so much that was barely touched upon. This review text was either not revised or just came off as an opinion piece and not as tech journalism.

I think she was more pointing out the lack of innovation between iterations... That is a valid criticism. The whole point of a review is to point out things that may be of annoyance to other users and highlighting the things that are good. There's no such thing as unbiased journalism, we all expect the reviewer to have a certain tendency to favor some features above others and dislike some more than others... Like literally everyone else. But sure next time she should just ignore any issues with the tablet because it stands alone.

The Tab S6 is a amazing tablet, don't let them fool you. Dex is awesome, yes it's not perfect but it's still good. The iPad has lots of short comings but has made some improvements with iPadOS, but most of the improvements that they done Android tablets already had those features. Since Samsung is the only one making Android tablets now these companies should make apps that are optimized them, because the Tab S6 is a winner in my book.

Just bought the S6 for work-at-home tasks a month ago. Was torn between a thin notebook, Surface, or an Ipad. What a great android device this.
The thing that surprised me the most: the sound quality out of those AKG tuned 4 speakers. Amazing.
Cons so far: catalogue of productivity apps still can't match Apple and Windows. There used to be Adobe Rush on play store but I don't why it disappeared.
Also, don't bother getting the keyboard case. I could live if it offers adequate typing experience but the back cover retention is not that good and the price is absurdly expensive.

I mean if your Chromebook still works fine then you don't need to upgrade. And the Galaxy Note series is known to last years so I suggest keeping for another 1-2 years. A20 is a huge downgrade from Note 8. But a Galaxy tab paired with a Galaxy phone does work really well. I'm saying it based on experience.

For "office" users like me it can replace a laptop or the surface, but of course u can not compare them as there are made for complete different tasks. However, comparing the S6 to my iPad I can say for sure that the S6 will replace that one completely, (mainly because it's way more open and fits therefore better to my needs).

As for Dex. I had the s4 and the One UI app is significantly improved. It seems like Samsung is slowly improving Samsung Internet to be a true desktop browser. I can now access full Google apps using Samsung Internet where chrome forces me to use the apps. I can access Saleforce 1 via Chrome. It's a bit messy. This is the best review I have seen of the Tab S6 so far! You actually approach it from the standpoint of what does it do as opposed to simply comparing it to the previous model. Only techies judge things based on improvements as opposed to utility. Keep the great reviews coming!

I bought the keyboard cover... but then bought the normal cover as well, afterwards, as it's far more secure in every way (ie stronger, doesn't move about when holding/carrying, and I can happily flip the cover back to use as a tablet without worrying that I'm damaging the keyboard, ie if I was still using just the keyboard cover as a whole). The keyboard part easily attaches to the Tab D6, even with the standard cover on. The only problem is that I have to carry around the keyboard part as an extra, and well-protected in a little padded zipper bag... and leave the original back part of the keyboard cover at home. I also prefer the look (& feel) of the standard cover. No matter what, I love the keyboard part. It doesn't behave fully like a normal windows keyboard (ie control copy & paste, etc), but it's great for a little keyboard - and I've been using tiny Bluetooth keyboards, so this is a big step up for me. Yeah, I'd like a backlight, and bigger spacebar & back button & separate delete button... buy then, I might as well carry around a large Bluetooth keyboard if I wanted all of that. Or, I might as well buy the Galaxy Book, which is bigger. The keyboard as a cover is my only issue, and by also buying the standard cover, I've resolved that issue (except for carrying the keyboard in a padded zipper bag as an extra).

Me and my brother are planning to save up for a Galaxy Tab s6, and we were confused about the whole keyboard thing so we decided to watch some reviews. We only watched the beginning so far, and just one question: Does the keyboard cover come WITH the s6, like when we buy it we'll get it, or is it sold separately like as an accessory?
Edit: I heard this was a bad review, but we're not actually looking for a _review_ , just a description on the keyboard thingy.

They can compete with ipad toe to toe if they want. They can boost the refresh rate (they have the tech and they supply also other brands) and boost everything if they want but they targeted different market such as India and china.
    Galaxy - Tab with S pen 128GB = $649
    Ipad pro - $799 + $100 pen 64GB😢 = $899
Pretty smart though, users from India increases by folds for the past years and it will continue.

I think after a month of trying to decide which tablet to buy Im going to go with the TAB S6. I already have a 2017 15 inch mac book pro with touch-bar. I don't sketch/draw, and I don't do video editing. Ipads are insanely expensive in Canada starting at $1000 dollars for the lowest memory and not including a magic keyboard or apple pencil. After buying those items and paying the taxes, we're talking $1600 dollars easily. I don't need another laptop I already have one. I want to watch netflix, have a beautiful kobo e-reader, play some games, surf the web and maybe do a little bit of note taking and drawing. The S6 comes with a pen that has multiple interchangeable tips, and that gorgeous screen is awesome. Not to mention its super light, super thing and nice thin bezel all around. This just seems like a no brainer now at this point. This is obviously what will best suite my needs, although everyone is different. Took me almost a month to get to this point and this review really really helped. And for all your Americans, this tablet still costs $899 up here, plus taxes lol. I hope I can find a bit of a deal and then I'll jump on it. Happy hunting everyone!

It's a combination of magnets and suction. The magnets hold it on barely, but you really need to apply some pressure to the back cover to get a good seal with the suction section. I think that's why some journalists I've seen have had issues with it not sticking. They're just slapping it on the back expecting the magnets to do all the work. If you apply pressure it actually stays put pretty well.

It strikes me that the designers of these gadgets are either right out of touch or, deliberately withhold to incorporate a must have "headphone jacks " and hurriedly rushed these gadgets into production !!!
For majority of users headphone jack is an absolute must have, and also a deal breaker.
So come on Samsung & Apple, how much does a headphone Jack costs ??
