The first computer I used was a research machines 380Z, followed by a BBC model B, 1980-1985 ish. I have been using/teaching computing since then, now happily retired. I treated myself to a samsung s9 ultra as my Christmas present to self in December. These youtube video clips are a fantastic means of learning new concepts and skills. Thank you for the time and skill you have put into creating this video. I am confident I will still be learning about s9 ultra, software and hardware accessories next Christmas. I am only 68 and have lots to learn. Maybe in 32 years, I'll know it all? 😊 Anyone else remember punch cards and mark sense cards? Then along came keyboards, mice and GUI. Now it is speech recognition, the s pen and AI. Who knows what will come next? Enjoying reading other comments.

This topic always breaks down into "use case". I love samsung Dex and have been using it for years and wish more people understood it's power and flexability. Do I think it could replace laptops? Again that is bases on the use case. If you set something up for grandma who has her samsung, then it saves her having to buy a laptop and wasting the money. If you are in university with limited space in a dowm room or limited funds, then samsung dex would be an option as most univerities allow you to remote into their servers for your work and citrix as an example works very well in Dex. If you are using it to try and program with or work with applications that need high resources, then no, and even then those kinds of projects should be using a desktop more than a laptop. Would I use Dex over my desktop, no, but I spent all of January and February of 2021 trying, and yes for ME i would use dex to replace my laptops, in fact I have done so. Including the fact i'm typing this all out in DEX right now.

A few years back, Android tablets were somewhat gimmicky. Not that much performance, not an optimised tablet UI. But now the main problem with Android tablets is finding proper optimized apps. It might take some time but I'm happy that Google started to incorporate tablet features in native android, will definitely help devs to make proper desktop grade tablet apps

However, I bought it because I'm a writer, and sometimes I want it to be a little harder to get distracted. On the Tab S9 Ultra, it's a bit of a hassle to leave my Word doc, which is a good thing. On the other hand, I always have much easier access to my music controls, which is nice.

I've been using an S8+ 5G as my go-to mobile device for over a year and love it! I still have a laptop that I schlep from home to office (I prefer to BYOD) and back, but when I'm in court, I almost exclusively use my tablet. I had an ipad and was completely disappointed in its capabilities, so gave it away. I don't use DeX, but instead use a special Android launcher called Win-X launcher that has allowed me to customize my home screen to look like Windows 10 (I run Nova Launcher on my Samsung phone). That little Anker hub you showed is way cool and I'll have to look into getting one. Thanks for the video!

While it’s true that every person has his/her own necessity of specific devices for working, it’s also true that this need of heavy working apps on desktop OSs is very limited to those specific professionals. Not considering PC gamers, as time goes on, there are less and less people who need a whole Windows pc or Mac, because they can do just fine with a cheap android tablet, or an iPad. I think it’s only a matter of time that tablets and mobile systems will overcome their actual limits and will become the main way of computing for casuals and also professionals.

@@chanhmf Even if we use Microsoft 365, there are still a lot of stuff which the desktop version can do but web and mobile versions cannot. My office subscribe to 365, we have the option to work using the web version completely but we still prefer the desktop version (co-authoring with the files stored in OneDrive) because certain functions are not available in the web version. I work in an engineering company so we are heavy users.
For example, in Excel creating custom number formatting is not possible on the web app, but existing custom formats can still work.
I don't know why Microsoft don't want to deploy the same functions in the desktop version to their web and mobile versions. Because if they do, I will definitely get myself a tablet so I don't need to carry 2 laptops (1 company, 1 personal) when I am travelling.🥲

Thanks for mentioning the new Yoga 9i. So far I've seen countless videos comparing tablets to regular laptops, but I feel like the newer 2-in-1 laptops are the ones to beat when it comes to use cases, since they already have tablet mode and pen support, but you also get to keep your favorite windows applications.
The new yoga 9i, the surface pro and the new dell xps 2-in-1 seem like great alternatives to a tablet based workspace because they don't keep the keyboard attached on the back when using tablet mode anymore, which in my opinion is what sucked the most in 2-in-1 devices.

I've used Windows convertibles for years. My biggest frustration with where things are currently is that there are not any smaller tablet sized options (sub 11 inch screen) available. Along with that, there doesn't seem to be any effort to make Windows tablets more capable at doing tasks appropriate to a smaller tablet (apps sizing for smaller tablets, better cameras, better speakers, better mobile apps, better battery life, etc.).
I've been using a Galaxy Tab s7 for well over a year now, and I'm thinking about replacing it with an old Dell Latitude 11. It's frustrating that I have to go back to a seven year old device to find something that is compact with good speakers and decent battery life that runs Windows, but it looks like that is my only option.

The fingerprint sensor is not ultrasonic, but rather optical. For me I think the problem is the laziness of developers. There's something I call selective optimization. Usually developers give excuse like Android devices are too many and so they just create whatever and then only optimize for apple devices. That's what I call selective optimization, whereby you pick a particular one to optimize for.
So if any of the developers are to come to android you could pick 1 or 2 to be optimized for. For example take Photoshop, there's Photoshop on the ipad. This is not because the ipad is an Almighty power ipad but it's just their laziness to come to android. Take a look a apps like clip studio paint for galaxy. Its so optimized that it's even way better than procreate on ipad. Then so there's no excuse for not being optimized. For example affinity designer can decide to come to android and pick Samsung and Google. Probably just an example. At least if they pick just one out of the Android brands out there to be optimized for, we Android users will have nothing to complain about since we understand why its not for all android brands.
Considering the fact that Samsung is already on par with apple if not better in my opinion, these developers should take advantage of it. But their laziness won't let them. I hope everyone understands tho❤❤

That tablet did more for me than I thought it could. After the first few weeks, I stopped missing a computer. I saw this video when it came out but 2 months later, I just actually ordered a Tab S9 Ultra for $550 after trade-ins and saw a great discounted price on Macbook Air M1 (~$790) right after that. So I'm on the fence about this. I'm looking for a PhD programme and possibly for a job at a lab. I love drawing and writing too, so I know that flagship tablet is way more than enough for those, thanks to the web apps of today. But for me, using a citation manager software is also a must. So bringing a tablet to the office at the uni without having a desktop class OS is... kind of childish, maybe? I know Tab S9 Ultra will bring me the most of the way there, but if I'm sticking with academia, I feel like a real laptop like a Macbook is the sensible choice. But I'd love to use Tab S9 Ultra because it's capable, it's open to the creative use cases and it's so fun to use. Also funnily enough, it has double the storage compared to the M1 Air, lol. I'm still on the fence. I watched a lot of videos on the subject and I can't decide easily.

Dex is not limited to Samsung tabs, but can be used with their smartphones and external keyboards and displays as well. Another new trend might be the combination of smartphones and AR glasses, which further can improve productivity of smartphones and replace tablets even more. Why go for a 14 inch tab S9 Ultra, if you can go for way bigger displays with an Xreal air?
If you then also look at the trend of folding smartphones that turn into tablets, it's more likely that smartphones replace tablets soon imo, at least Android based once.

Because ideally you just want your mobile apps to be an extension of your desktop applications.
But to hear that even after all these years there's still no effort from Samsung to make the Galaxy Tab more Adobe friendly is just mind blowing. Between Samsung's tablet team and Adobe's programmers surely someone can find a way to make mobile versions Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Illustrator able to work with Galaxy tablets.

Thank you for the video. I think there is a huge misunderstanding regarding DeX and not being able to run Apps in an optimized way. It is exactly the opposite because per definition, every single App can run optimized under DeX. I’ll explain this. One of the main problems before DeX was that Apps looked just stretched and ridiculous when running on big screens under Android or iOS. The best examples were Apps like Instagram or Twitter. DeX idea was to address this big problem. Instead of stretching Apps, you could suddenly run each App in a Window in its “native” and optimized size. Problem solved. Look, Apple refuses up to today to allow the Calculator App to run under iOS. The only reason is because it just looks ridiculous, and Apple has no solution to it. And the 3rd party calculator apps look ridiculous, too. But my daughters Tab S4 can run it natively on the tablet screen in a window with an appropriate size.

    • @arvandvarahram
      @arvandvarahram ปีที่แล้ว

@@GhastlyHungerThis is correct, but this is not necessary. If an App was not designed for tablets, like Instagram, the best option to run it is running it in its native size which is simply the most optimized way. And only DeX allows this because it can run the Apps in a Window without forcing them to be stretched. Therefore, per definition, each single App can run in the size the developer has designed it for and this is always the most optimised way.

Android has 2.8 million apps (900,000 more than iPadOS).
Count the number of apps with optimization problems then divide by 2.8 million.
There is a reason why TH-camrs don't do this simple math.

    Very interesting review indeed
I've now left behind my laptop at home, during my last 2 3-month trips to Africa this year, and found that I could live for a while, even three months, without getting on to my laptop
One thing that I find much better on my tablet and my phone is typing on Gboard, with the predictive AI of this keyboard, especially in foreign language, but even in french and Italian
Also the usability of apps is much much better than in Windows
Of course, I didn't take my laptop with me, because I like to travel as light as possible
I'm on travelling at the moment, and will come back home in a couple of days, after 3 months
I miss my laptop for duties that require desktop estate, and I use my laptop all the time with a second big monitor
I miss it for tickets buying, travel recap on spreadsheets, financing analysis and investments, quick copy and paste form one application to the other, even scheduling health visits and exams
I do all these things when I'm home and a lot of them less now, happily

Here are some of the benefits I experienced ever since I started using a tablet more than my laptop. Just for relevance's sake, let me tell you that I am a Recruiter.
    1. Great battery life: Mine's 5100 mAh. It lasts me at least two days
    2. Handwriting mode: I use the stylus to write on the tablet instead of typing. Like Mike said, one tends to remember handwritten stuff better than the typed stuff
    3. WhatsApp Web like usage on the WhatsApp app of the tablet: Prior to buying a tablet, I had not known that I could use WhatsApp on tablet to continue my phone's WhatsApp chats like I can do on Windows WhatsApp desktop app or WhatsApp Web in a brrowser.
    4. Cameras: They are better any day compared to a laptop's webcam for video calls.
    5. Browsers: The tab's browsers allow you to view the websites like you do on the laptop.

All this comparison is valid if you are going to use it as a everyday device i.e. browsing, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, PDF reader, Video calls etc tasks ! The moment you think about anything more like Programming/App development/Photo/Video Editing etc, even a moderate laptop blows Tablets (Android, iPad or even Windows tablets) out of water !!
I have recently tried comparing a top of the line Windows 2 in 1 Dell tablet with a Dell laptop (theoretically same specs like RAM and CPU) and got really frustrated with the tablet while using for Visual Studio, SSMS, OBS Studio and similar apps plus Edge browser with 20 or so tabs open at a time, so finally had to swap it with a laptop (similar specs and also of same Dell brand). My guess is tablets are not really designed to be used with dual 4K monitors through Thunderbotl Docks and for a lot of parallel processing but more for portability and touch-screen operations in mind !
If you compare Android tablets then the pain for high-end computing is even more than that for Windows tablets !!! Even the top of the line iPad is not good for high-end computing purpose, you'll want to switch to MacBook Pro in that case.

Good overview, I have found the same experience. Samsung Dex is SO far ahead of the times. For office tasks or general use, I grab my s7+ tablet. The only things I use my laptop for anymore are video editing and video games. If you aren't doing those things or you are using a specific app that doesn't have android capability, using a tablet is FANTASTIC! Gor older family members, I always recommend a good tablet. Just make sure to get a good one. The samsung S series are always a good pick.

As a guy that loves to travel a tablet with a Bluetooth MnK and PS4 controller is my go to! But I have 1tb of stuff to make it as comfy as possible! XD In my opinion if you don't use windows or mac programs your golden! Some people just wanna browse the Internet, play some games or download a few shows/some music a tablet is perfect for that but if you need those "PC programs" don't hold yourself back..

I totally agree! My computing needs are the simple ones you've mentioned. I've gotten so used to the speed and convenience of today's phones and tablets that I completely forget about my desktop computer for years at a time! I have 2 tablets (Galaxy Tab S9+ and Tab S7) and a phone (Galaxy S24 Ultra) that do absolutely EVERYTHING I NEED! I have no reason to get up and go into the other room and sit in front of a desktop computer or bother with a laptop. As far as LTE or 5G data, I always have a great experience just using my Mobile Hotspot with my Verizon service. I can take either one of my tablets absolutely anywhere. I also read, create and sign documents since all 3 of my devices have an S-Pen! Because of my large hands, I can hold my tablets up like a large phone and type with my thumbs in portrait mode without a problem. So, I'm not missing anything by not using a PC or laptop.

Short answer from me, yes. While not at all latest, I used a tab s6 with Dex for about two years duration of the COVID pandemic. With a bluetooth mouse and keyboard (and screen when at home), she ate, she werked. Got what i needed done and some artwork here and there.

I cannot rely only on a laptop because it's lacking entertainment experience. Several streaming services allow 4K and Dolby Atmos just on apps. Personally, the main propose of using tablet is for entertainment. BUT The Tab S9 series look amazing.

    • @JS-kb4bk

Why would it hurt the battery? Modern electronics stop charging at around 98%, then any more power gets redirected past the battery.

One feature I really like is remote access. I have multiple PCs in different locations in the house running Windows 10/ 11. One for work, one for gaming, and one all-purpose. It really works well as the S9 Ultra can wirelessly connect to all of them. It even works with 3840 x 2160p as the Samsung screen resoIution is only slightly less. Everything on the PCs works flawlessly through the tablet. You also can use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse on the tablet when remoting in to the PCs. I love this thing. No need for me to get a laptop.

I think that if tablets were to become the standard, the one thing that should be a MUST for flagship models (and even student/office models) is EMR technology for pen usage, handwriting isn't a thing of the past, it can become a thing of the future in note-taking, and it also provides artistic integrity and curiosity beyond work (but ends up being an alternative for modern/digital artists on the go)

Will get to doing this once they let me unlock my bootloader :)

Lenovo tab extreme is the comparison that's needed. Same size as s9 ultra, works better as a laptop, has a dex like mode.
Also mentioned lack of trackpad, but the book cover for s9 ultra does have this and makes it far more of a legitimate laptop replacement.

I am two weeks in on the S9 Ultra. Use it for Word, PowerPoint , Gmail, etc so I find it to be perfect because I get mostly what I need w out the drama of opening up my speedy Lenovo, the long boot, the updates, the restarts….that crap exhausts me. Re PowerPoint. I do think the MS versions n the Lenovo is that much more powerful, but for editing, adding images , shuffling slides and tidying up, the pad is perfect

First, Thank you for your video and sharing your experience. I completely transitioned over to Chrome OS. Now I do not do all the video editing and some of the heavy work load that a lot of people do, I am a Safety Manager, Blogger, and on occasion record episodes for Podcasts. I am able to do all of that using a Chromebook. I needed something portable and at the same time 'workable'.. After some research and trying out different models. I chose the ASUS Chromebook M30 @-in-1 Tablet with a detachable keyboard, and pen (included). It has 8GB Ram and a 128GB storage. I highly recommend it if someone is looking for a small but powerful Chromebook. Once again, thank you for your video.

I tried using my iPad as a laptop while travelling. The portability side of things worked well. However I needed an adapter and dongle to have access to an SD card reader, usb ports and HDMI port. The main limitations centred around file handling. With three cameras in tow transferring files and editing photos and videos was more difficult than using a dedicated laptop. I had previously used a 15” laptop, tried using 10.2” iPad with keyboard case then settled on a Microsoft Surface Pro.

I've been using DEX on an S8plus for 7 months now and I agree with your conclusion. DEX is great if you mostly use a browser and compatible apps. You have to be willing to adapt and change some habits coming from a windows enviornment, but for me the pluses outweigh the negatives. Instant on, no annoying windows updates when you least expect them, quiet operation. I use a UGreen dongle that gives me HDMI, USB, SD ports and I can connect everything that I need. One thing I learned is to be aware of HDMI cables as lower version cables can cause mouse delay that is annoying. Addtionally USB3 hard drive interferred with my mouse signal so I had to add a USB extension cord to my mouse/keyboard reciever to move it far enough away from the dongle.

Great review and got really excited until the show stopper; doesn't have mobile connectivity. My main purpose of a tablet is for when I travel so I can do simple stuff and stay connected. Having to depend on getting WiFi in other countries has been problematic. If they get mobile connectivity, I'm in.

The video is neat and interesting - I just feel it should've rather been called "Can Android replace my PC", because Tablets do not have to be Android (or iOS). There are powerful WIndows tablets (for example ASUS), that run WIndows (or also Linux if you want), that surely could completely replace a Laptop.

Bro those heavy apps run on laptops cuz laptops have fans. Step one: put a fan into a tablet. Step two: message all the software devs to add exclusive support for your device cuz youre the only one supporting them with appropriate hardware

One potential solution you failed to mention. I use a Samsung Z Fold [perfect for lightweight travel even with a keyboard & mouse] then hook it up to my powerful windows laptop to run DEX. This gives you the ability to run Photoshop, etc. It has cellular connectivity and you also can do all of your texting, email, web browsing, etc. even w/o wi-fi. So I edit photos or video on the laptop then drop the post processed work directly onto my Fold. You can copy and paste between the laptop and the mobile DEX device seamlessly.

  • @pratttastic89

I have a Galaxy Tab S8+ with the slim keyboard case and have fully replaced my laptop with it. I used to have both a laptop and a Galaxy Tab S6 but I barely used the laptop and I wanted to reduce down to just one mobile computing solution and this is the perfect one for me. I remote into a desktop PC when I need Windows features, but otherwise can fully get away with the tablet. Browsing the web, studying, checking emails, video calls, media consumption, finance management, etc, are all really solid. I do bring a mouse with me everywhere, but I would do that with a laptop anyway, so that's not an issue. I also only need it when I got into Dex mode or remote into my Windows machine.
I know it's not for everyone, but it can work very well if you know what you're trying to accomplish, and more importantly, what your limitations will be.
