What a lot of guys don't seem to realize is the fact that a check engine light came on because something triggered the computer. If that trigger is not addressed, the check engine light will persist. Some cars will have the check engine light come on at regular service intervals, and those can be cleared with no problem. It's the fault codes that can be a pain.
This worked for me! Thank you, Nathan! 2014 BMW 328i: Seemed completely normal except that the engine would not start and the check-engine light was on, but no faults recorded. Oddly also--there was a lot of pressure to the brake peddle. But your fix fixed the problem! Thank you again.

i work at adavnce the reason why we cant is a legality issue. someone had a engine code deleted and the problem got worse and detonated their engine and blamed advance auto because they said they didnt know and your right it is dumb

I did this, but my engine light is still on and i still have all radio presets? how? any ideas? I know i fixed the problem that threw the code. It was a vacuum leak in the valve cover because of a broken stud. But i fixed that and the code never went away so i've been looking for a way to clear it. Thanks for any help
Thank you... I am a new follower. My 528i 2008 failed Inspection. 5 minutes Oil would not give me the coded as to why. They said, they did not have a Code
I tried this but did not reset the engine sign and all the presets still worked. What did I miss...unplugged both terminals and shorted them together.
For a good 15seconds...Will try again longer....

On the later models F30 etc if you start then stop the engine 4 times in a row with 30 seconds between off/on the light is reset, I know this sounds wrong but it does work and is easier than taking the battery off, give it a go, but note if you have not resolve the issue causing the warning then it will come back

I want to do what you're suggesting. I assume I should not connect a memory saver? There are no faults and everything is OK on the service check system, but the CHECK ENGINE YELLOW LIGHT is on. I have an F01 730Li 2013. I am in the Philippines, hence the model 730Li. My next oil change is still 6 months away.

you said if a problem it will not reset by doing that on battery. IF you didnt have a problem the light would not be illuminated to begin with. do not touch terminals together, just disconnecting the neg will reset it.
Nathan - Thank you for putting this DIY video together. I have an E60 BMW 2008 535i Sport with a check engine light due to an intermittent missfire on the #5 and #6 cylinder. I followed the procedure to the "T" twice, but the check engine light is still on. Just wanted to pass the info along.
+Jeff Sloane You will more than likely need 2 new coil packs or your valve cover is leaking oil into the spark plug hole shorting out the packs
Jeff Sloane the light is still on because you still have the miss fire,after you fix the #5-#6 misfires try resetting the check engine light
Hey buddy, is there by any chance any way to check which cylinder is misfiring at home without professional computer and diagnostic tools?
Unplug the coil packs one by one with the engine running and you will hear where the misfire is.

My 2011 328i was throwing codes for ABS rear wheel speed sensor. I took it to the shop to get it changed, my abs light & brake light went off but check engine light is still on. Any ideas on what this can be ? & no they didn’t reset the check engine light
This can often work in almost any car. Does a master reset. I have used this in Ford and GM trucks as well. If the light comes back in you probably have an actual issue that needs to be addressed.

Worked great on my '99 BMW E36 (323i)!! Cables were to short to touch but I used a wrench and touch it to both cable and worked fine. Cleared immediately. Thanks again!!!
So if i had a missfire on cylinder 2 and replaced the sparkplug put everything back together (my car battery was dead) and jumpstarted my beemer and the cars still runnibg rough and the check engline light is still on what would be the problem ? Nathan I had the block of fuses unplugged that is located drivers side corner under hood nearest windshield. It has about 5 or 6 fuses in it. I had a no start situation and was checking the full pump fuse. Fuse was not issue. Got the car running. Now all the dash warning lights are on, and no speedometer - only RPM, fuel gauge and temp work. I tried disconnecting the battery and touching leads together. Same issue no change. Any suggestions?
I dont think so this kind of reaet is only temporary because it will come up again. Here is my experience with my 02 bmw x5 i have check engine light with many codes and if i buy from the dealer that will be very spencer and i decided to buy everything from ebay . Here is the list
Flow mass sensor $50
Oxigent sensor bank 1 and 2 $100
Set of spark plugs $70
Thermostat $50
Gas cap $35
Air filter $30
Replace the oil and filter $70
You can do this yourself is very easy except the oxigent sensors because you have to go under the car and heat up with a torch to lose the sensor and need an spetial tool that you can buy in autozone make sure to fill up the radiator and the correct oil level after you done with it the light will be there for a least 1 or 2 days then the computer will reset itself on day 1 after drive for around 1 or 2 hours let the car cool down then check the antifreezer level add if necessary and thats it by the way the reason to replace the gas cap is because sometimes the seal cap crack and the pressure sensor throw a code thats way sometimes you need to replce it. Beleive me you will save alot of money and time i'm not too good writing English i hope you understand everything good luck

I have a question I have an E60 with a CEL and wanted to reset so it can get rid of that and the transmission malfunction error. I tried to do this method already as you showed but nothing reset. I see others do it where they disconnect the negative and have it touch the positive for several minutes in order to reset. Any insight on this ?

If it will not reset you might still have the problem, i would recommend the creator c310 off ebay for $40 to see what is really going on with your trans and to reset it
+Nathan's DIY Garage So I was able to get the CEL to turn off but the trans malfunction still came up. So I ordered a ICAN BMW scanner to see what it is and do my fluid change but I'm hoping the scanner will clear the code once it's all done.

Jason to reset service light.
Open the bonnet,
Then undo the obd cap,
Get a piece of wire and connect 1 end of the wire to hole 7,
Then connect the other end of the wire to port 19.
Then put the ignition onto 2nd click.
Wait 10 seconds then with the ignition still on go back to the obd under the bonnet,
Then pull the wire out.
Hey presto, service light is now reset ;)

Tried but did not work on my BMW 330ci E46 so I went and bought a scanner and cleared. It was really cold this morning and when I went to start the car my battery was dead so I used my jump pack to start the car. When it started I had a misfire and the service engine soon light came on so I turned the car off and pulled all the coil packs and put them back in. Started the car and the misfire was gone but the service engine soon light was still on and it called for p1351 5th cylinder misfire but Autozone would not clear the code so I bought a scanner for $100bucks. Car runs great and no light came back on. I will be returning the scanner for a refund. BMW wanted $190 to put a scanner on it.
Does anyone know how to reset the entire computer? I had my engine replaced and the mechanic can’t get it to run because the computer needs to be reset completely and all of these videos are basically just for the lights on the dashboard and not the actual computer. Please help! 😓
They have to have the right scanner tool! Basically a really expensive professional one that will clear all the codes and reset the computer.
Once I did this and FRM was malfunctioned soon after that.

My 2008 bmw has the CELS light on.. took it to autozone it was the gas cap .. that was the only code. I fixed that and the light still on 🤦🏽♀️
I'm sure you've figured it out by now but bmw codes have to be manually reset, they arent like most cars where when the code clears the light turns off after a minute. These cars are made to make money 😂

Dave, Pause-and think about that question for a moment.
Do not attempt this with the car on...actually, do have someone hold your keys while doing this procedure.
Batteries "in theory" are not hot-swappable...and should be in the circuit when power cycling in any fashion.
However-I have, in the past, had the negative terminal connection come loose on my M3 which caused the cause the car to loose power, and stall in braking situations, as well as expeditious take-offs...technically the car was being power cycled with Key On in a similar way. Snugged up the 10MM and all is well. IIRC the stalling is a safety feature to keep circuits from frying due to Voltage Spikes etc.

William Carpenter Ikr. Lol!! I recently put a new A.C. COMPRESSOR , EXPENSIVE ALTERNATOR, AND EVEN A NEW EXPENSIVE BATTERY ON/IN MY 2006 X-5. Durn, I'd have been better off buying an auto parts store. When replacing the battery, my brother enlightened me about touching the cables together and I think I did something wrong. With everything I did to my BMW, the service engine soon light is still on. What throws me is after I changed all the above listed, did I do something wrong when trying to reset all the dash warning lights? If anyone has advice(Other than burning that bmw, Lol) please post it. Thanks

hey buddy so update on my e39 as you know I have idling issues I changed the idle air control valve with another Bosch one with low miles and I changed the cracked mass boot sensor as well. scanned it again still throwing codes with idle sensor begin first and camshaft second following powertrain and bank sensor 1 & 2. I think I'm going to change the camshaft because it's closely related what you think? also inbox me ya # I'm only 3 hours wanna book a trip to ya shop could use an expert

That has to be a vacuum leak somewhere, the ccv snaps into the intake, that could be the problem, that wold cause a terrible vacuum lean, what codes exactly are you getting?
+Nathan's DIY Garage P0505 P0340 P0170 P0173 P1189 P1188 P0153 on the emissions side secondary air system incomplete and cataylist incomplete everything else fine
+CoolinKofi The p0505 os faulty icv , the p0170 and p0173 p1189 is unmetered air prob from the icv, p1188 is more than likely the ccv leaking vacuum, p0340 will be problems with the cam or crankshaft sensor, if it has a china sensor in it that will be the problem with that, p0153 is the 02 sensor, on the rear manifold for the last 3 cylinders, the one closest to the engine, so on the different icv you need to clean it even if it was low milage, i did a video awhile back on that, let me know if you need a link, i hope this helps , you can bring it to me but you can probably just fix it yourself, let me know what you wan to do,
He probably disconnected the positive terminal first . Always disconnect negative first

Enrike Franco Unfortunately, then now design the cars with so many computers that you need specialized equipment to reprogram and you have no choice but to utilize the dealership.
not true. many smaller, family owned repair facilities invest in manufacturer specific scan tools. my local shop has at least 20 different scan tools, each specific to a make of vehicle. i managed a similar shop for 10 years. you can definitely avoid the dealerships while still getting quality repairs and diagnostics

Depends on your State's inspection regulations. your car will have to go through it's drive cycle monitors, before it can be ready for testing.
California requires ALL Monitors to be "ready" So... No Cats on the car-Cat monitor=No Ready...No smog test/certification.
However, If the State allows at least One Monitor to be in a Not-yet-ready for testing mode-and as long as you don't allow the car to achieve it's internal Cat Monitor before inspection, then the car will not throw the SES light again
This Monitor, fortunate for you in this case, is the hardest one to achieve, at least in Los Angeles-because, you have to drive 10 minutes constantly, between 40-60mph with very little throttle input...impossible during the day.
The only way I have been able to get this monitor ready for testing was to get on the freeway at 2am. with OBDII scanner connected to "verify monitors are ready", a Stop watch, and the cruise control set to 58mph....drive for 10 minutes straight, voila monitors are ready.
Even at 2am 60mph feels too slow to be safe on the LA freeways.

you must resolve the issue that is throwing the code. this will only clear codes. if the vehicle still has an issue, that issue will throw a code to the computer causing the light to come on again. fix the issue, use this procedure to clear the code. done.

+Jason Nicoli Its the engine management light, ususally comes on with the check engine or the abs light, if it keeps popping up you need a scanner to figure out the problem
+Nathan's DIY Garage i tried this method and the light did not go away. i tried connecting a scan tool but it did not link with the car (Could do it prior of using this method). The cigarette light (fuse) is working just fine. Do you have an idea of what i should be looking at??
If the scan tool will not link there might be a problem with the gm5 module, if your car is pre 2001 you can get a adapter and use the round port under the hood, a adapter is only like $7 of ebay, if the can bus is down you might have to replace the gm5
