Not sure if it's a weather related coincidence, but as soon as the winter weather kicked in I started running into rough/chugging experience when the car was in low rev ranges when running. I'd also get the check service engine soon message pop up on the dash and it'd eventually go away once the car stabilized upon running. Car is at 50K miles, do you think this could probably because the spark plugs have run it's course and needs a replacement?
Hey George, two months ago, I replaced the head gasket and all 6 spark plugs. But I'm facing intermittent misfire after that. I cleaned up the MAF sensor and oxygen sensors as well, but the issue is not resolved yet. What could be the problem?
If you’re burning up ignition coils you have installed the (Pre-Gapped) spark plugs with too much plug gap, you have to have the gap set to the BMW specification for the YM&M of your car. The coils will not only be unable to provide the proper quality spark, it will be shorter in duration and the coil will not be able to discharge the saturated energy, and when it maxes out, it cant cool itself, because these coils are not suspended in a heat buffering fluid, they are molded into a siliconized rubber boot, installed inside of a metal tube, with an integrated lip seal and shrouding cap at the top, trapping the heat in, and when it heats up with the engine creating more resistance in the coiled copper filament , more heat which causes a compound perpetual increase in filament temperature, that can not escape, the event spirals into a rapid self destruct sequence. I checked the “Pre Gapped “ $12.00 each iridium plugs, and they were “Pre gapped” between .068-.076” I believe the BMW specs for a 2007 328i was .036 or .040” if memory serves me, the plugs had nearly twice the amount of gap of the manufacturer’s OEM sources limit, without a coil designed to survive in high temperature severe duty conditions, that much gap will make your coils windings glow like a toaster element
I had an issue that wasn’t really related to the engine but if when you stop and after a few seconds the car vibrates check the back brackets that hold the muffler, mine came loose and would vibrate the car

This oil cap has to be one of the shittiest solutions in the history of the oil filtration system. I had already a couple of times oil filter stuck in the housing after removing the cap. Tried following the torque recommendation of 25NM, but my cap goes all the way to the end until there's thread. Next time I find filter slightly squashed 🤦♂️ The whole rediculous basket that holds the filter is wobbly and doesn't give me confidence that it's been engineered right, as well as those hydraulic valve adjusters as BMW calls them that rattle on the start up until they get oil. The whole system is compromised.
@@GeorgeAusters quite possibly. Also I used K&N instead of OEM filter, but it shouldn't matter as they're the same dimensions. Watched all the TH-cam videos on installing it correctly on that ridiculous basket and after all of that, that's where I came to conclusion it's just insane what their engineers came up with.

My diagnostic machine says misfire 2-3-4 cylinders. I replaced all plugs and two of the coils. Swapped coils to all different places. Runs a little better but still says misfire. Could it be the solenoids?
In my experience the connectors are shit. You flip them up to remove the wire from the coil. I found that they dont connect all the way sometimes even when all the way down. I pushed mine as far as I could and ziptied them. It fixed my issue. Misfire on cylinders 1 4 and 3
@Arnold Rimmer I can send pictures if needed, My repair still holds to this day. The alternative would be to replace the Coil Pack Connectors. They go for about $4 each on any parts site as well as Amazon! Its a more Permanent solution. As far as the Vanos solenoids go, I was told the same shit by a mechanic. Pulled them out, cleaned them. Tested with 12v and it popped open and shut like its supposed to. Replaced both top and bottom after cleaning and testing. They get pretty gunked up to be honest.

Thank you for a very useful video 👍 I also have this common idle issues on my 2006 n52 325i in direct injection. At cold start up or when the engine been sitting for a while, the engine hunts for about 20 seconds more noticeable when in Drive or reverse gear(underload) Then it clears up and runs perfectly. Scanned for codes, no codes! Cleaned vanos changed out check valves, replaced maf sensor (genuine) no change. Should I go ahead and change out vanos solenoids even if I don't get a trouble code?
@Arnold Rimmer no I took the car to bmw and checked for codes, no codes. I did take it in when it was at operating temperature which is when it doesn't have the problem. Did you put in genuine vanos solenoids? I have been told that maybe there's a software update for the ECM by a euro car mechanic. Do you have the exact problem only on cold start? I forget to mention I did changed the magnesium valve cover gasket and the eccentric shaft sensor. Made no difference to the uneven idle on startup. I ran a injector cleaner but no difference. My car has only 98,000km change the oil and filter every year. I have never seen n the engine check light on or had any issues. I know this is a very common problem.
Unplug both terminals on the battery and drain the remaining stored electricity by holding them together. (Idiot message: make sure the positive and negative wires are not connected to the battery). Leave your lights on and honk the horn. Let the pos/neg cables rest on each other, or run alligator clips to each other if they dont reach. After 15 minutes the entire car should be factory reset. Connect the battery. Start it up and your idle should be adjusted. If not you have gunk in the engine. Probably the valves caked. (Credit to some British guy I don’t know the name of).

Also vibrations on gas pedal when driving, when stop i feel like something moves. Wheels on the ground but car body moves forward a little. Need help with that 😞

I changed the VANOS solenoids the oil filter and the oil, but nothing happend, engine cuts of at lawer speeds. Can you give me some advices please! , I see you know all about this tipe of engines. Thanks allot!!!
You can clean original Vanos solenoids, done mine 3 months ago, 5k miles in between, runs better than ever.
Hi, is this an issue on s63tu engines?
I have huge rpm jumps on cold starts in the morning and after it warms up it disappears and runs normal. Cleaned Mafs sensors with no luck
did you sort it mate? i have the same problem.
@@officialbart658 my x5m f85 is at the dealership right now. Cylinder walls scoring has been found, dealer has contacted bmw of North America and waiting for an answer right now. But this doesn’t sound good to me
Oh and btw, this is 3rd time I’m dropping car to dealer in 4 months with the same issue. During 2nd visit they replaced injectors, spark plugs, air mafs sensors, and coils. Nothing helped.
I have a P0171...what do you think that this is?
what a great channel and great content all the time hats off to this guy love it
Cheers mate, much appreciated!
Thank you for this information.
Any time!
I having exact same problem when starts. And got worst mpg.
Ordering new maf soon. Any brand to use? My car is e60 525i lci n52 black cover.
will vanos solenoid failure always throw a code?
No
How can you tell if the ignition coil is bad? Is there any way to test it
Took to get my oil changed now my car has a rough idol and a high whistling noise when its in park running doesn't skip when driving runs fine just at stop signs it will skip and when idling in park
They either used the wrong oil filter or they threw away the center part of the filter.
I have a misfire at low fuel tank?? Any ideas
possible fuel pump?
Hello, I have an issue on my E92 325i N53 3.0L.
I have changed my High Pressure Fuel Pump, Ignition Coils, Spark Plugs and 2 Vanos Solenoids yesterday.
Also changed oil, coolant and valve cover gaskets btw.
I still have a rough idle. With the airco / AC OFF it's worse.
Any ideas what I could be, anyone?
Thanks!
what actually the problem? tq
Thanks!🫡
You’re welcome!
Hi bro good work
Cheers for the video, very helpful! You should do a vanos solenoid replacement tutorial?
Do you know if the N52k (128i/125i) without the three-stage manifold has any DISA valves at all??
125i has 3 stage manifold 128i does not
@@jl2929 my 325i n52b25 has 2 disa valves
Ok so I’m getting misfire cylinder 1-2-3-4 with fuel shut off. Random misfire. Misfire lean fuel. Misfire during start cylinder 6 -5-3 . Multiple issues. I hear the car shaking slightly and misfiring at idle. Then as soon as I start driving it has no loss of power or anything seemingly wrong. Drive on highway for an hour no issues . Parked and within a minute they come back only at idle. Your video doesn’t help with this because everything you said causes lack of power .
Did you get to know what’s the problem?
Great info. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Could you do-a review on E90 engine, having some issues with the engine periodically juddering on start up
This is the same engine in the e90
the e90 is just a body style it comes with various engines
What about rough idle just at the first start in the morning? I am thinking injectors or oil separator
Did you get help?
?? Any update?
It was one of my Disa's breaking apart
Everyone having bmw problems getting towards 100k miles. You basically need to change everything time consuming but not to difficult. Smoke blowing while idle pvc value, car dying while driving crankshaft sensor, not starting up starter, crankshaft retard solenoids, misfire spark plugs ignition coil
Very smart !!!
This oil cap has to be one of the shittiest solutions in the history of the oil filtration system.
I had already a couple of times oil filter stuck in the housing after removing the cap.
Tried following the torque recommendation of 25NM, but my cap goes all the way to the end until there's thread.
Next time I find filter slightly squashed 🤦♂️
The whole rediculous basket that holds the filter is wobbly and doesn't give me confidence that it's been engineered right, as well as those hydraulic valve adjusters as BMW calls them that rattle on the start up until they get oil.
The whole system is compromised.
If your filter is crushed then it has been installed incorrectly
@@GeorgeAusters quite possibly.
Also I used K&N instead of OEM filter, but it shouldn't matter as they're the same dimensions.
Watched all the TH-cam videos on installing it correctly on that ridiculous basket and after all of that, that's where I came to conclusion it's just insane what their engineers came up with.
I'm a new bmw noob. I bought a 2006 325i with the n52 engine. I just replaced my valve cover gasket. I disconnected my battery before starting to take off all the wiring for the coils, injectors, etc. After assembling everything back together and switching my ignition on pressing the gas petal 30 seconds to reset the valvetronic motor, I still have a rough idle. The car ran great before I decided to try replacing the valve cover gasket. Any advice anyone? Greatly appreciated and have a nice day.
i have the same issue on a 2011 328i replaced the valve cover gasket and that same thing happen. started throwing a bunch of misfire codes and
Same happened to me, watch my latest rough idle video where I solved the problem
@@GeorgeAusters okay will do. i have another bmw a 2008 328i that is haveing a rough idle as well. It’s give me a P1415 which is mass or volume air flow too low i replaced the maf sensor and it still gives me the code land rough idle. When i disconnect the MAF and turn on the car it runs perfect.

Thank you my man. I did a video cleaning it👍🏻
Whats the part in the filter?
Any one know what he is talking about?
Facts
My diagnostic machine says misfire 2-3-4 cylinders. I replaced all plugs and two of the coils. Swapped coils to all different places. Runs a little better but still says misfire. Could it be the solenoids?
Replace all plugs and coils
@@GeorgeAusters I did That today and it didn’t help. I cleaned the mass air flow sensor too. What else could it be?
This is happening to me misfire slot 1 just doesn’t go away and my rpms aren’t staying steady. I replaced spark plug and tried multiple coils.
They get pretty gunked up to be honest.
if your engine is running rough, its most likely a because its a bmw.
Hahaha
thanks! greatly appreciated, but why do you mispronounce all the words that have a letter "U" in them? lol

Hey, i have misfires if i stand before a traffic signal.
I checked OBD it sayed:
2AAB variable suction->So I changed big DISA.
2A82 Vanos Inlet failure-> So I changed both Vanos.
2A2E with P0172 fuel trim too lean -> no idea what i can do here.
You have any ideas?
Really needs scanning with ISTA my friend👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters actually we used I**a. Still dont know what to Do with the fuel trim failure :/
Scan with ISTA first
@Arnold Rimmer no I took the car to bmw and checked for codes, no codes.
@@infadel885 The thing is I do remember doing this and it did fix the cold start idle problem. But the problem returned after a few days
@@boost351 Tony- did you fix your issue? I replaced the valve cover gasket on my car (ran perfect before), now I have the surging/hunting idle issues intermittently. At time it idles perfect. Very wierd.
