How I Record My Videos

I've gotten, and continue to get, a lot of questions on how I record my videos, my equipment, instruments, sound and other things. I used to have a lot of that information on my channel, but when TH-cam changed the page layout, they did away with that space, so, I've been answering those questions one by one, as best I could. I thought that a video might explain some of those things a little more clearly than I could in a written response.
Before I go forward, I'd just like to say how uncomfortable I am making a video like this. That's the main reason it took me so long to make. I don't want to come across as condescending or give the impression that I think I possess any special knowledge or skills because that's certainly not the case. I'm just going to go through some of my processes...how I do, or how I have done, certain things and I'm well aware that there are many different approaches you could take. I know my way is not the only way and is most likely not the best way.
Now that that's out of the way - prepare to be thoroughly underwhelmed.
I'm going to file this video in my "Bass Tutorials" playlist.

Troy, I can appreciate that you may be uncomfortable doing this "type of video". But rest assured sir that it is very much appreciated. Almost as much as your videos themselves. You have brought much joy and I'm certain as much relief to those of us who have struggled learning bass parts. Your videos are my favorite and when I go to see if someone has done a "lesson" or "cover" for a s0ong I have to learn, I am always glad to see THJ3113 come up in the list of search hits. Thanks again

Hi Troy, Rich Graham here, I turned my friend Wayne on to your channel. He is a upcoming comedian and through watching you he has stopped breaking my balls about always practicing and not watching movies all the time. Thank you for showing your video technique as we are going to start a podcast. I won’t be doing any tutorials on the channel but we want to promote music and comedy for the Hudson valley. As always thanks for all you do and look forward to seeing more of your videos. They have helped my playing a lot.

Troy. Extremely rare for me to comment on a public forum; but was compelled by your generosity. Not only are your music videos the best on the Tube, but now you have taken a Huge leap by sharing your personality and personal/private space. Seems as if 90+ % of social/mass media is saturated with the outpourings of brainless Boobs. So for myself, and all others like me (that I know are out there), who genuinely care about music and our fellow musicians-- I cannot express deeply enough our appreciation for all that you do to positively impact TH-cam and promote music. Thank You!

At the end of the day you really bring out the base that has been largely in part covered up or much softer from its original format and I just love how you bring that bass out of these wonderful songs the 1st song I ever heard from your videos was fairies wear boots and at the shame because there has got to be some of the coolest bass work and sabath history and you brought it out man

That was really my intention with my covers - to highlight the bass parts within the context of the song. So people could hear how the bass worked in the context of the song along with the other instruments. I accomplished this better on some covers than others. Thanks a lot.

WTF? It took me 5 years to find this gem? Lol. Loved it Troy.
What you need brother is a nice little mixer. Send a signal to your phones and one to the computer.
Back in the day, when I was recording (in our homemade studio nonetheless), I ran all my mics through a mixer that I controlled then sent a stereo signal back to the tracking room. From there we ran it through a compressor and noise gate. The signal then went through the main board then into a headphone mixer. That way, we each had our own "mix" in our phones.
Damn, I sure miss it. Great, now I'm depressed. 😔

Troy, you're the "go to" guy for learning covers as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for all those cover vids. Great sound, clean technique, and it seems like you can play anything. I'm going to get back to learning "Sour Girl" as soon as I'm done writing this.
Thanks for letting us see this side of you. It takes guts. Hell, posting any kind of performance on here takes guts.
As far as equipment, let me share a recent discovery with you. This little gem has solved all my sound-related problems practicing at home and playing live. When I show up at a gig, I've got my bass in one hand and a 2U rack case in the other - no amp, no cabinet, and I'm set up in five minutes.
I don't think I can post a link here, but the name of the company is posse audio. I've used mine for a few months and it's made a world of difference.

Thanks for the reply. It's good for playing live (used it today - no cab or amp on stage!) and for practicing as well. After further thought, I've realized that it doesn't support playing the recorded track and recording the outbound mix at the same time. A pity.

I'm glad you finally got around to doing a video on how you put it all together to get such great sound in your productions. I know you would much rather let your bass do the talking but this was great! It's always helpful to learn through the trials and errors of others as well as our own. I definitely need get a bit more familiar with the garage band on my iMac. A video on your basses/amps would be great too! Hopefully soon while you're on a roll:) Thanks again for spending the time as it's always highly appreciated. You're an excellent mentor.

Hi Lori. I'm glad you found the video watchable. As a person who enjoys all things simplistic, I found GarageBand, in the limited way that I use it, to be very intuitive to use - a breeze even. I think the next video I do will be on my basses with a little more detail on my sound and the way they are set up, with their advantages and disadvantages. I don't know about the "mentor" stuff but thanks anyway.
I hope you're liking your thumb-rest as much as I do mine.

Like I said, I've been both promising and putting it off for quite some time. If we can help someone who's considering posting some videos, I think that's great. There's a number of different ways to do it and make a decent sounding video.

Troy, I've been enjoying your videos for years and undoubtedly, you are the King. No one compares to you in terms of bass tone, quality of playing, song choices and just being a cool dude. I just turned 56 yesterday and I've been playing bass in northern NJ bands since I'm 16. I wouldn't doubt we've crossed paths before at some local rock club. Anyway, I want to do some videos like you but not for public consumption - just to send to friends, etc. I have watched this video several times and I still don't get exactly how it works. I understand the interface/Garage band part. You're mixing your sound and playing that out to the computer speakers. Correct? The video part is what I don't get. To be sure, you plug a microphone into the camera, put it between the computer speakers and record the video using the mic attached to the camera? Assuming so, couldn't I just plug a better quality microphone into my phone to get a better quality recording rather than go buy a camera? Can you please clarify that? Also, at 9:10 in your video, you mention using a splitter cable from the speakers to the headphones/camera. Like you, I'm not a "techie" guy - I don't get it!! Can you explain that please? I would be extremely grateful. ROCK ON, Brother!!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Sam. Thanks so much for the very kind words. It is very possible that we crossed paths (I'm 58), but I rarely spoke to anybody back then. I was painfully shy and withdrawn. I've had two different methods of recording. The early way was a microphone, that sat between a little amp and the computer speakers and picked up both the music and my bass, went straight into the camera. It sounded surprisingly good for being as primitive as it was. You can tell these videos because I'm not wearing headphones. When I started using GarageBand to generate my sound it sounded a bit more hi-fi. The splitter cable is a simple 1/8" Y cable (male/female/female) that was plugged into my computer speaker's headphone output. One of the outputs fed my headphones, so I could hear my bass and the song I was playing along with on iTunes. The other output went straight into the camera. It was a cleaner and more direct way of recording. Still a bit primitive as the audio and video was recorded straight into the camera as I played it and there could be no editing done after the fact. What you see and hear was what you got. The key to this method (or both methods actually) was finding a camera that had a microphone input. The Kodak Zi8 was one of the few that offered that feature and I bought a couple of backups off of eBay, just in case. I'd be happy to spend more time with you on the phone or in person and offer you whatever assistance I can. If you'd like to take me up on that, respond with a fresh comment because I am not notified by TH-cam about replies to my replies. Take care!

Although you may seem visibly uncomfortable in some parts of the video, I and perhaps many other fellow bass players thank you for making this video.
After following you for nearly three years, aside from being curious on how you got such a great bass tone on your recordings, I have always been curious to see the room in which you record in; I honestly thought all this time it was a hall full of masks in a living room, so thanks for finally fulfilling my curiosity, haha.

Super late to the party. Interested in buying a bass soon & stumbled upon you playing The Trees by Rush. Thought to myself, 'what very cool, very interesting, almost comical wall paper.' Watched a few more videos and thought that a mask looked as if it had been slightly moved. Lol. Anyway, thanks for the tour of your collectables, seeing your set up and most importantly your bass playing. Very inspiring and helpful in learning the tones particular to each type of bass.

Very helpful, Troy. I am equipment shopping with a couple goals in mind: First is to get a decent direct box. The Behringer BDDI is a little too cheap. I thought the no brainer was the Sansamp. Then I thought the programmable counterpart would be much better. After checking out the midrange issues of the Sansamp(s), I am considering the VT series...likely programmable. I am not too interested in any modeling features, but I will "boost" the tone a bit for recording or running direct. If you could buy only one, would you go with the VT? Now, I need an interface for recording. You helped me out with this, thank you!

Thank you for your sharing! Most definitely would like to view a video on your excellent bass collection and the story of why you own it. For me, your choice in doing certain songs lend massive credence to you influences and is evident in the bass guitars you choose to play as I own the same basses myself! Lastly, why not a headless L/XL-2 ? Very looking forward to the answer to the question! Also,a special thanks for your contribution to bass players globally as well!

Thank you for watching. Ugh, I've been procrastination for such a long time on the bass video. I just know it's going to take up a lot of time and I'm dreading it, but I will do it before I sell off a chunk of the collection. No actual Steinberger because I would not pay what they are selling for right now... around $3,000. Perhaps if I played one and really loved it, but I would not buy one on a whim. Also, with a few exceptions, I really don't think that one really needs to spend more than $1,500 in order to have themselves a really nice bass. Of course it's all up to personal tastes, but some of my favorite basses happen to be the least expensive ones.

    • @tkosho24v1

@@TJH3113 Thank You for your reply, I agree that a bass need not cost a fortune as well, case point is that I noodle around on songs on a Jazz Aerodyne that was a thrift store rescue candidate. It has the slimmest neck at the nut and is a very fast and easy to play. This is my thrash bass that stays out of the case on a stand to be grabbed at a whim. I recently purchased a Brooklyn L2 for way too much money here in Japan. I have always wanted one and would sketch drawings of them on my high school note books and it was finally time to make the step and am not disappointed. I am intrigued with the 4000 model you have. All in all, you have great taste and thank you again. Take it easy!

Huge thanks for the details Troy. Great first start. Do you go to the pedal then to the Apogee - then Mac ? And i assume you just play the songs via iTunes or something and GarageBand is basically the bass EQ ? Again - appreciate all the time you spend doing these videos, and the backstory is of interest to some of us just starting.

Thanks. Yes, pedal-apogee-mac and, like you said, I just play along with the songs via iTunes. I get most of my eq from the pedal and use GarageBand simply as a way to get my bass into the computer.

for the recording you do you might benefit greatly with using a little 2 xlr input presonus audiobox and hook that up to your computer, then run your garageband with it and get rid of the pc mics and stuff. an audio box would make it so you can mix it afterward and synch to your video (disable all audio on video and synch up to your mix with somehting like windows movie maker. then you can adjust bass sound according to song. if you wanted to go mic then a 2 channel audio box would also work with bass input and mic input, mix the origional audio, turn down origional bass, do the bass line with origional song and when your done tweak and mix, then synch to video. , i cant believe it sounds so good with the external pc mic your using but we are talking world of difference with xlr audio box, plus it would give you a reason to re-record all of your rush bass covers in master format. I know i'd enjoy
