    The War Pigs cover I uploaded last week seemed to go over pretty well. The abridged story behind it, if you did not read the encyclopedic entry I wrote in the "about" section beneath the video was this -
    I recently did a short notice gig where I learned 15 songs in just over a week. I knew a couple of songs. Some others, I was pretty familiar with from hearing them hundreds of times on the radio over the years. And the rest, I did not know at all and learned from scratch. While I was recording a couple of videos last weekend, someone suggested a War Pigs cover, so while I was set up, I decided to do a one-take cover as an example of how I might go about learning a song for a live situation. It was bit more improvisational and with much less attention to detail than I'd normally put into one of my covers. I did a couple of songs from the setlist in that same mindset and this was one of them.
    I have no idea if the notes in the quick part are correct or not, I just filled up the space with 16th notes. I think they're in the neighborhood though. And, at the gig, I didn't screw up at the end of the song like I did here.
    I just got a notification that this video will be blocked in the U.S. which is funny since Zep plagiarized a fair amount of their early material. I filed a dispute already but I'm not sure if the video will be viewable. I'll give it a shot.

    What's up with that mutated first position fingering on the double-time where the pinky is left out? Does that have a name?

    JPJ is another bass god, and IMO the most talented musician in Zeppelin, at least from a technical perspective. The guy currently plays like 11 instruments proficiently or some such. I see lots of covers of this song here, maybe yours won't get blocked.

      TJH3113 Perhaps one fairly underrated Zeppelin song you might give it a try is Carouselambra, which is mailny a JPJ song. Even though the line gets a bit improvisational at most parts of the song and it gets a bit difficult to hear the bass through the synth madness in the end, I think it's worth a listen. Anyway, keep up with the great covers. Cheers!

    Usually when I try to play Zep 16th note runs, I fail because my plucking hand is too slow (eg, chorus of Ramble On). For this one, both hands are too slow. Sigh. You are my favorite bassist to watch and learn from on TH-cam. I've learned several songs through you, though I haven't mastered a single one. I also find that most of your covers tend to be pretty complex! Anyway, thank you!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to work on building up speed, strength, and stamina by doing simple scales and patterns across all 4 strings. Try to get a consistent tone out of each plucking finger. It's a bit tedious and boring, but it will pay off in the end. I used to do that from the 5th fret, down because, if you can do it there, you'll certainly be able to do it higher up the neck. Also, when really quick parts come up, remember that, sometimes, playing hard is the enemy of playing fast. I will usually try to lighten my touch up a bit when a quick bit comes up. You'll get there!

    It was my understanding that JPJ used a A major scale pattern for A, B, etc...thank you for posting these videos: you are f*ing great, and you have killer tone

    • @stephencoxbass
      @stephencoxbass 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's actually Mixolydian (A mixo, B mixo, C mixo with the chromatic walk at the end)...JPJ actually wrote an article about it in a bass magazine. What's funny is that someone else must have notated it even in that magazine...as he worded it clearly, but the example in the magazine didn't match what he said in the article.

    Haha I was about to write "Oh so THAT'S how the fast part goes" until I read your liner notes :) I always thought it was a major scale- it's the right amount of notes, and without checking it I bet it probably is, BUT that part always taxes me that way, especially if the drummer starts too fast. What I got out of this "Learned For Live" video is different from what I would've gotten from one of your regular vids, is that nailing something manageable but altered live is better than playing the precise recorded line clumsily. I never know what I'll get out of watching you but it's always something.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for reading, I can't tell you how many people have corrected me on the "correct" way to play the part. I'm still not 100% sold that it's a major scale but it's definitely different from what I'm doing. When I did it live (and on the video) I found it helped to "jump the gun" a bit and stay ahead of the timing a hair. If the drummer rushes it, you (we) are doomed.

Take is slow... and, as you build up speed, don't ding in too hard and tense up. If you do - it's all over.
