A bare-bones demonstration of the bass line for YYZ.
When I play the opening unison run, slowly, along with the metronome, the tidbits after the main run are not counted out correctly. I'm just using the metronome for general time keeping.
On thing to keep in mind when playing this song is to strike a balance between playing with enough force to get a good "aggressive" sound out of the bass but not so hard as to choke out the notes and potentially lose your speed and dexterity - as speed and dexterity are two things you'll definitely require to master this song. A bit of luck wouldn't hurt either.
I'm sure I could have done a better job on this but if I'd have kept putting it off I might not ever have gotten around to posting it.
I'll try to follow up shortly with the next video that will demonstrate the remainder of the song including the bass "solos".
Also, at the 1:50 mark I refer to "the A string" in error. What I meant to refer to was the "A note on the G string".
I remember struggling greatly when trying first to learn and then to play some of these songs. I would have killed for any sort of "leg up" on them but there was nothing like this (or anything else for that matter) available at the time. If I can save someone a bit of a headache then I'm happy to offer up what meager knowledge I do have. Knowing the song is one thing - playing it another. Anybody who might watch this video still has their work cut out for them.
Thanks.
You're not kidding about "having their work cut out".. 😧
Exactly my thought. When I began on bass in 79, you were lucky to even find sheet music for contemporary artists. And if the lyrics weren't among liner notes, you were on your own. Stopping and starting tracks to learn them is how all my vinyl records really became worn out. You Tube and tablature is such a leg up.
This is awesome! Thanks for posting this.
I like how he’s not using any fancy audio editing. He’s not afraid to play it straight out of the amp and let us hear it. Props. I really liked this video!
Around two years ago, I watched these couple videos. I was somewhat new to bass, just learning the basics of structure and how to groove with folks. I only watched the tutorials because I was awed by the rest of your playing.
Recently I have begun to feel a lot more confident in my technique, and thought Hey, why don't I try to learn YYZ? And, two years later, the first thing that came to mind was, "Let's find that guy with the funky masks!"
Thanks for inspiring me; now lets see if we can get it to the next level!
This has to be one of the best tutorials I have ever seen. I haven't even been playing that long, but the way you break it down makes it seem possible.
Great playing and even better teaching! Thanks :]
Im thinking the same !!!!!!!
I have to say Thank You. I recently started to take lessons, and the instructor asked me which song I wanted to learn, for me, the Holy Grail is THIS song, so he decided he wanted to teach me directly. My issue isn't how fast to fret, I can make those parts, it increasing my plucking speed, and with time I'll be able to get this thing down. I'm sure I'll watch this a bunch of times because of how you slow it down and make it easier to figure out. I have a goal, have had it for years, but now it's a lot closer, thanks to you! Cheers!
That's great! Give it time and be patient with yourself. If I could offer you any advice for playing this particular song, it would to not dig in too hard and try your best to not tense up (keep it loose). Both things are easier said than done, but if you can focus on that, it will go a long way. Best wishes to you!
It’s 2024 and we are still learning how to play YYZ from your video. Thank you!!! ❤
Very happy to hear that!
I just went down the rabbit hole and watched a bunch of YYZ bass covers and no one gets it right except this guy! I've been playing it wrong for years and am now playing along with the slow version he did so I can get it together. Thank you for posting this, it's super helpful!
When I get around to doing some tutorials, Freewill is on the top of the list.
Thanks.
I am so amazed every time I see you play... just thank you.. these are posted a few years back I hope you are still playing and doing well Happy Holidays..
This has to be the best tutorial I have come across, if it's a lesson, it's a damn fine one.........!!!..........................That triplet technique is invaluable. I have been playing for years and have also been a Rush fan for years. I'm primarily a plectrum player and this tutorial has unlocked many doors and will definitely improve my playing. Thanks...your time and effort is appreciated by me.....
I'm very glad you found it helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Awesome, one of the best tutorials on Geddy I've ever seen. Great bass player, all of your covers are great, thanks for posting them.
Thanks a lot for watching and taking the time to comment.
Excellent tutorial. I'm not much of a bass player, but you've got me believing I could actually give this a decent go.
thank you!
Hey man thanks for breaking down those triplets. I'm new to the bass and learning some new tricks really makes playing that much more fun for me. Your posts remind me of a saying...'for the love of the game'...thanks again for taking time to posting these clips.
I've been struggling with this song for months, but your tip on triplets was very helpful, saw major improvement overnight because of this trick, now I can go about practicing it the right way!
SWEEET!! Nice job with the metronome. I had a few notes wrong. Thanks for straightening me out. Playing this with the strap on keys since we lost our bass player. Thank goodness I don't have to sing at the same time.
I didn't even know this video existed. I love how you break it down slowly with the metronome, I didn't think I'd ever be able to understand this entire song, but I think I can learn it with this video and a lot of time.
I hope you find it helpful. Just take your time and be patient with yourself... and don't give up!
@@TJH3113 I appreciate that man. Also, I'm curious: A- What are your favorite strings and B- What do you spend on strings in say....a year? I mean, you've got what, like 8 bass guitars now?
@@machete8614 I use D'Addario EXL220's on all but one of my basses. You can get a 2-Pack off of Amazon for around $30. They used to be $24. Not sure how much I spend. I play them until they no longer sound good to me and then I generally switch basses. I was actually up to 32 basses and I'm down to around 15. 6-8 is my goal.
@@TJH3113 Ok, I use D'addario too. Geez, I'm gonna have to get them from Amazon then, I've been paying 30 just for one pack! Thanks man! Let me know if you need me to take some basses off your hands LOL.
I avoided this video for months because I was scared to learn it. I saw a tab online. LOOKS Easier than it is. Thank GOD I have you, Troy. THANKSSSS
Love how he plays that ric!
Excellent job! Nice touch with explaining the right hand picking idea
Dude, this was so helpful, thanks for doing this. The triplet technique was especially helpful.
wow that was the most comprehensive tutorial of that song Ive ever seen...you took it down a few notches to a laymans level....no one ever does that
CUDOS Brother...keep doing that
i just want to say that this was extremely helpful, as a new-ish player this has helped me learn a lot about playing with speed and accuracy, i don't have the line down at 100% speed yet but its getting there. Thanks man keep it up.
Take your time and be patient with yourself. The biggest tip I could give you would be to not dig into hard when you are playing.
You're very welcome!
Great tutorial, really helped me get a grip on how Geddy plays it, nice job!
Thanks.
i know this is an old vid but it has really helped me to understand the bass in the song more,
really helped me out as i started on bass properly about a year ago, and only found rush for myself about 6 months ago and i cant get enough of it, thanks for the help
That's great to hear! Thanks for letting me know.
Hey TJH3113, just wannet to say thanks for this great lesson, ive been trying to pull this stuff now for 1 year, and now you just come along dancing and making me pull this of on 5 min, Damn your good, thanks for everything, rock on!!!
All this time by habit I've always lead off with the middl finger, I've taken the time to run through this playing along with this video and had it down in no time flat which was a great help.
Thanks for breaking it down note for note and taking the time to do that and share it.
Much respect and much thanks!
I think I may have mentioned it in the video, but it doesn't matter what finger you lead with... it still works out the same. If that's what you are most comfortable with, don't try too hard to change it.
I'm glad you found the video helpful and thanks for letting me know. Take care, Gary!
Hello sir.. this is the first time I’ve come across this video.. it looks likes it’s been up for awhile.. wow you are amazing... I love the way you break it down.. I only wish my arthritis in my hands wasn’t so bad or I’d give it a try.. I wish I would have never stopped playing.. I started when I was 13 played until I was 20 or so.. was in many bands..I’m not bragging by any means but I picked up songs very quickly and I was playing with guys 5-10 years older then me.. but things happened and I just walked away from it all..(bad decision) but 5 years ago or so at age 50 I really wanted to play again.. I find enjoyment in just doing Simple songs and some a little more evolved... but watching you and a couple other guys on TH-cam
(Constantine) is another..have really brought me back to something I really enjoy.. sorry for the long story I didn’t mean to right a book or take up your time.. but I just wanted to thank you very much for all the work you put into your channel...have a great day...
Thanks for the kind words and I'm sorry to hear that your arthritis is keeping you from doing some of the things you'd like to. Don't give up! There's no disgrace in playing a simple song perfectly. Playing fewer notes just allows you to focus on different things, like - note quality, the space between the notes, feel...
Thanks again and take care.
Brilliant.
Thanks so much especially for that initial scale progression.
Excellent. Thanks for the time to share it. TC
Thanks. It was trickier than I thought it would be.
@vtx1300dave
I don't think Marlow has anything to worry about. He's a great communicator and knows what he's talking about.
The fact that you lead with your middle finger shouldn't make a difference at all - the principle is the same. Whichever finger strikes the second note in the triplet - just let motion and gravity hit the third note for you with that finger.
My "interpretation" of the solos will be covered in the second part.
Straight up excellent video. This one is near the top of my Bass bookmarks for reference.
Thank you. It's pretty old, but I'm glad you found it helpful.
That lick/run you played at 2:14 was so SWEET!! You are the boss at bass
Thanks. I'm glad you found it helpful. That riff is just something I've played as an exercise for a very long time, probably 20 years or more. I'm not familiar with Muse or their music at all, though I have seen a hundred bass players cover one song by them; the one with all the hammer-ons and distortion which sounds pretty cool.
Love the fill at 4:15. I worked on this song so hard as a teenager. Its fun to return to it with more of an ear and better tools (like this) to learn it properly. Thank you!
A lot of great stuff in that song, isn’t there? I’ve been working on this song since the album came out! Thanks and take care, Calvin.
The opening to YYZ actually is morse code. It's the airport code for Pearson Intl airport in Toronto. If you ever fly into that airport (and check your baggage) you'll find a tag on your suitcase with the letters YYZ on it when you pick it up.
I don't know what you mean about "Far Cry" or other Rush songs, though.
You sir are amazing. I already play this easily on guitar solo and all. But the bass is just another thing
Thank you very much.
Really awesome.. thanks for doing it with the metronome.
crazy how many people play this stuff so differently. geddy always leads triplets with his middle finger first. i do as well bc its the longest finger, triplets on bass feel more natural that way to me, and geddy as well, but here you are playing these songs well with the index finger first, something i thought i would never see. obviously works great for you. not how geddy plays these songs but the result is the same. well done!
I'm an absolute beginner, but the closest I get to emulate this technique is also leading with middle finger first.
Thanks a lot.
For me, it's always been about practice and repetition. This song is fairly high on the difficulty scale and I remember, when first trying to learn it, that it would be impossible to play but, practice and repetition.
Some finger strength is important but I find, on faster passages, that digging in too much will slow me down. It's more important to stay loose and not tense up, as difficult as that may be at times.
Keep at it and one day you'll sit down and blow right through it.
Seriously, your tone is fantastic.
@jjhh2
It's a 4003 which I got in 2008 or 9. Everything is stock except for the bridge which I replaced with a Hipshot and the bridge pick-up bezel which I got from Pickguardian. The pick-up have adjustable pole pieces that allow you to raise or lower the height which helps balance out the individual string volumes.
I think some of the "tone" you're hearing might be the way I have the bass set up - with low action, neck set straight and light strings coupled with the way I strike the strings
Thanks for the breakdown, helped with some of the things I was confused on. Love your videos, great playing and very helpful!
Didn't realise you did tutorials too - great for difficult ones like yyz, love the tone you're getting on that ric!
Would not have learned this without your help. Thanks!
Hi! i sent you a video response from our prog theme evening me playing yyz with our band. I needed to learn it quite fast so you were a big help. Just wanted to say thank you. Cheers! :)
Thanks. I've never listened to Fairport Convention but will give it a try.
This,I believe,is how a tutorial is done!! Nice! And thanks!
the triplet thing actually helped me a lot thanks
Awesome. I'm glad you were able to grasp what I was trying to describe. Triplets are definitely my secret weapon.
you are so excellent. thanks for posting all your rush covers - if i want to listen to the bass isolated, that's hard to come across. however, i trust that your covers are true to geddy lee's talent and that's pretty awesome!
Thank you very much for the kind words.
@Oge129
It was my pleasure. I'm glad if you found it helpful. Thanks.
Excellent breakdowns. Thanks for taking the time!
Its must be great to be able to play like this. But imagine how much greater you have to be to write like this too.
I am in awe.
@JeffTBPlayer
Glad if it helped. I don't play the Ric much these days. At least the price has dropped a bit on them. A year ago they were going for $1,900 and now I'm seeing them around for $1,500.
wish your videos were around 20 years ago, spot on
So do I! Thanks.
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks.
agree the triplet tip was genius. amazing help.
Never knew exactly which notes were in the main riff until now! Cheers. Now if only I could play it to speed. ;)
Great job on all your stuff! enjoy your videos and appreciate being able to grab some of this stuff when trying to learn a lot of these top notch bass lines.
Thanks.
This guy is a wizard, bass player will get better with these great tutorial.
Would be cool if you did "born for adventure" from STYX
Great riffs
Thanks. No wizardry here.
Came for the Geddy Tutorial... got totally distracted by the AWESOME mask collection... gonna have to rewatch for fretting.
@TheNarchives
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
There is a wrong tab everywhere on the internet with the 3 chromatic notes alternatively on the D and A string. It made the riff impossible to play for me. Thank you for showing us the right way. Definitly not easy but I feel it can be done with work.
I'm glad you found it helpful. Keep at it, you'll get it!
@cdbeckm
Thank you. I'm really glad you found it useful.
bass sounds amazing
@CLbass37
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Excellent breakdown. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
as always, first rate. The metronome breakdown was especially useful.
The struggling to learn these songs is what made me a seasoned bassist.I guess it's all about time invested and practice practice practice.
learned this by ear when I was 16, one of my all time favorite songs to play on bass
Suuuuuuuure you did lol
THANK YOU. I love your tutorials. They're amazing!
Wow thanks bro !!! this lesson its great im student of fretless bas this video help me to much THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
good tutorial, playing it slower with the metronome is harder than the song itself....good job.
That is one cool Rickenbacker!!! Nice bass!
@djdel005
Thank you very much. I'm glad you found the video useful.
I didn't relise you go from the c on the a to the g on the d, i always thought it was the d on the a. Good ear!
cool triplett rake i used this using the last two rake notes never knowing that geddy gets that sound by doubling the first note of the triplett really cool nice job man
@TJH3113 That's right, make sure and play it close to the neck for minimun tension, and learn to just let your fingers glide over the strings, rather than hammering them. I find playing a little first to get your hands sweaty really helps for this, since your sweat lubricates the strings and makes playing much easier.
I want that Bass!!! That Tone!!!!!
I know it's been 5 years
But buy a rick lol
The tone is awesome!!!
I can get a similar tone with a 78 P bass believe it or not. It is all in the hands of the player
Thanks. It's just a little exercise that I've played forever.
That's awesome, he's a great talent. I know of three he sculpted - Plague Zombie (far btm left), Healer (almost out of sight to my right) and Gothic Demon (2nd to the right of the green demon). You can't miss his stuff.
Cool Tutorial! I havent worked it through yet but I ve got two additions:
the "triplets" you refer to (02:07m), are no triplets! (16th or so) - your examples at 2:14 are! - i would recommend starting with the middle finger.
and the riff at 02:41 is:
c c# d# e f# g# Bflat Bflat c# d# e d# b [slide to:] c
Thanx, you got me started working on this song!
Peace Bro!
Not all heroes wear capes. @TJH3113 is among them.
Oh please...
Hey Troy, Great job. Not an easy job to play this out at normal speed or slowed down! I'm sure I'll be referring to your video when I get to YYZ. Thanks!
Thanks, I'm glad.
I think you should do whatever works best for you. When I learned it, it was very small sections at full speed as there was no way to slow things down back then.
Iam a drummer, gonna learn bass...only from YOUR awesome tutorials!!! Awesome masks also!!!
Thanks.
No problem, I hope it was helpful.
thanks for putting this up, I'm self taught. I managed to get Tom Swyer right and a multitude of songs as complicated as this... but YYZ had me beat!! and nice Rickenbacker btw :3
Thanks. I hope you find it helpful.
Great talent man. Very tight. Rics aren't the easiest to play at all. You make it all look easy, and these songs are NOT. Thanks for posting, so a 20 year bass veteran like me can learn what I've been doing wrong for years :-)
@LeGiTxOvErDrIvE
That's a tough question. It was a long time ago and it took some time to actually learn the notes. Some more time to get it to the point where I was able to play along with the recording. And even more time to be able to play it along with other players. In some senses I'm still working on it and I began the day the album came out. Sorry I couldn't be more precise. Thanks.
Flawless tone
What a heroic individual you are. I almost feel guilty using all this knowledge that you have taken so much time to aquire. My war with 'that fill that starts on the high E', is finally over (very similar to the second 'bass solo' right?) thanks to this. Cheers Troy.
thank you for the quick reply!
i love the rickenbacker sound!
I love this Troy! Thanks so much!!!!! :-)
Thanks for the demonstration Troy! You were just a baby! Thanks. :-)
You're welcome. Yes, this was some time ago.
Great job as always. I really appreciate all the time and effort and dedication to your craft.
Open letter to the people who thumb down your post, get a life, try building yourself up instead of tearing others down, it saddens me that the Internet is a cesspool of trolls and haters.
Thank you very much, I appreciated it.
I wouldn't worry about that, the video still has a 97.5% like/dislike ratio.
Incredible tutorial!!!!!! Magic fingers Troy. i enjoyed this very much. Thank you. Marvine :-)
Thanks a million!
I grew up without TH-cam so there used to be this expensive way to learn tough songs like this….via an bass instructor at the local music store 😁
Tell me about it!
Thanks for this breakdown, it's very helpful.
You're welcome.
good clean playing mate. accurate too..
