A Few Words On The Topic Of Muting

  • This should cure anyone of ever asking my advice on technique again.
That being said, good string muting skills are very important for us bass players.
Those overtones and random sustaining notes are one thing - sitting in our rooms, playing through our little practice amps. But when it comes time to record, or play through a proper amp at higher volumes, or through a p.a. system - those extraneous noises tend to get amplified and magnified.
Engineers generally have no tolerance for things that clutter up their mixes and I've seen plenty of people get either buried in a mix or nearly taken out completely.
I am acutely aware of my lack of teaching abilities but will always do my best to help anyone who asks.
I didn't get into cross string muting at all but all the same techniques apply - I was in over my head as it was.
And just use common sense with your left hand - if a string is ringing out that shouldn't be - throw a finger on it.
On the bright side, I finally got "The Munsters" theme out of my system.
    Lily I'm home!
This video is brought to yo by the letter "um".

Thanks and I'm glad if you found this, or any other video, helpful. I'm not comfortable in the role of instructor as I'm self taught and I'm not very good at analyzing my own playing. A few people who I was communicating with at the time were having difficulties with their muting techniques and I was reluctantly able to offer this up.
As far as leading with your index or middle finger, you're right - as long as it works is all that really matters. It's not a matter of right or wrong. Thanks

So happy I watched the whole thing and got to the reward! I'm going to figure out how to play that...it's going to take awhile.

Troy - I see that this discussion was 7 months ago now, but recently subscribed and just watched this. Thanks for the discussion. I love that you not only cover songs but you share alot about technique. It's always excellent and spot on! I really didn't understand Derek's method, but I guess different strokes for different folks. As long as it works. I have played bass for over 30 years now and leading with your index finger seems absolutely natural to me.

It's the theme from a very old tv show called "The Munsters". I used to learn lines and melodies I thought were interesting as exercises.

I don't mind a bit of buzz. I think it adds a bit of character as well as a percussive element to the sound. Listen to any isolated bass track by Geddy Lee, Chris Squire or John Entwistle to hear what I mean.

thank you for the tutorial. I am having a very tough time muting sometimes because I tend to hit a natural harmonic location, so even by applying pressure to the string at some locations with intent to deaden it, I have to be aware to deaden it in the correct location.
I saw victor wooten at a sam ash clinic and I asked about how to deaden unwanted sounds. His "short" answer was "I just find ways to use that sound to my advantage", as if adding another note to his aresenal. Very interesting.

Geez, thanks for watching it. What you mentioned is exactly what I was trying to get at when I spoke about using the left hand in conjunction with the right in order to make sure no overtones remain.

Well, from my 11 month old comment, I learned that Squier really isn't really much sub-Fender. The difference is in crafting and detail. A Mexican Fender and a Squier Classic Vibe have pretty much the same craftsmanship but I actually find the Squier to be of higher quality. Now a bottom line Squier and an American or even Japanese Fender is a big jump.

Some fret buzz adds character to the bass, raising the action is counter-productive to that. That being said the action shouldn't be so low that all the strings do is rattle against the frets.

    @Derekbasscovers
My index finger is my dominate finger so It makes sense to me that I'd lead with that. Like many people, when I happen to play with only one finger it's my index and my middle lust supplements that. As far as triplets go, I only use the two - index and middle. I'm self-taught so I just adapted what techniques worked best for me. Some of my favorite bass players are "pickers" but I never got the hang of it. That's the main reason I don't cover any YES stuff.

Hey man, great video. I'm finding it very helpful.
Do you find that you have to change/switch up your muting techniques depending on which bass you're using? (For example, when you switch from your Jazz to the Ric, or any other bass).
Thanks. Keep up the great work!

    Hi,
Wow I've worked my way through most of your videos over the last few days. I've learnt tons from copying etc. Problem I have is I'm only really any good with a pick. Most of the videos on TH-cam I've found are really basic beginner level of right hand finger style and don't teach how to get a clear good tone.. I don't suppose you consider a lesson on right hand/tone would you? I get a great sound with a pick but would love to learn how you get the tone you do. Angle of fingers, how hard you pluck, etc - a two minute video would be amazing - not exercises and more than telling me to use alternative fingers which I already do. I think your teaching style is awesome.
    Thanks,
    Tim
    Thanks

Tim Craig I realise this is quite some time after you asked, but if you're still looking for info on this, it's worth checking out the channel "Scott's Bass Lessons".
He has a video entitled "The Real Secret to a Great Bass Tone!", which is all about right hand technique.
The info in that video can also save you a lot of money.
I spent years gassing after particular pieces of gear which I believed would transform my sound, only to find I could have achieved better results by just altering the angle of my fingers or something.

You have a very odd right hand technique. I don't anyone who leads with their index finger, just seems the natural motion would middle to index, or in the case of triplets, ring to middle to index. Did you do it on purpose, or just how you ended up playing? Also, do you ever play with a pick, and would you consider doing a cover of Roundabout by Yes?

I notice you seem to have a lot of fret noise when you play.I recommend raising your action. It makes it your bass a tiny bit more difficult to play but your'll get a much cleaner sound, without all the squeaks and rattles you get with a ultra low action.
