Pull up a chair and pour yourself a drink because, if you watch this video, you’re going to be here for a while. I’ve been meaning to do this for quite some time now and have kept putting it off for a variety of reasons. I took advantage of my day off from work to get it out of the way. I hope you all have a great 4th of July.

Actually, there are a lot of people I should have thanked, but I didn't want to mention anyone for fear of leaving someone out. Some special people who help me out on a regular basis include, but are not limited to Jim Trice, Roland Czili, Valerie Gusway (formerly Valerie Spinner) (Val really gave my channel a boost back in the early days). I'll add more as they come to mind.

good story, I think the important part is, that you didn't leave your guitar, under the bed for good. I know music saved my life, the live musician, is going instict, sampling, lack of patience, of the new generation. live in times, playing the guitar is cool, and very time consuming, your videos will , incourge the new generation. and the live player, won't fade away... Rock on...John lightfoot.

I watch your channel for the following reasons:
    1. You are quite a good bass player
    2. You play many of the songs I like
    3. You are a very humble person (a bit too humble?)
    4. You obviously derive much joy from the music that you play
All of that makes you an interesting person to watch and root for.
    Don't change a thing!

I've been playing bass guitar (mostly rock) for > 40 years. Fortunately, I came across Troy's channel a few years ago. He never spoke and then I found this video where he speaks about his history. How can such a uber-talented bass player be so humble about his abilities? So natural, technical, captures all of the subtleties in lifting bass lines in order to cover them. Troy: I too found my second wind and owe a lot of that to watching your videos from here in Canada. I hope you never stop, brother !

Thanks for your transparency and honesty. It's great to learn more about the player behind the bass. I'm inspired by your story and it's really nice to hear that even though sometimes playing an instrument can be boring and lifeless, that finding the things that make it a joy are the things to pursue. Thanks again for all that you do on this channel. - from Santa Barbara, CA

"Half-way decent..." Yeah Troy, and Ancient Greece was half-way clever. : ) Great story, and such a modest guy. I've played about 30 years and you're by far the best Rush cover bassist I've ever heard... hell, one of the best 'cover' bassists I've ever heard. Your ear and attention to detail; unreal. My background is similar to yours, I just wish I could have evolved as far as you did. You are an amazing player and an inspiration knowing that it is as simple as hard work and determination to learn a song and perfect it. Even more so is that you are as humble and genuine as you are a great player. Thank you for doing this, please don't stop.

I've played guitar for about forty years, and I hate to admit, I, when listening to and playing music, took the bass, like the drums, and other instruments, for granted, secondary even. I don't remember now how I stumbled on to your channel, several months back, but it has been nothing short of revelatory. You, and your wonderful playing, has not only given me a new appreciation of the bass, and bassists, but love for this instrument. How could I have been so ignorant all these years! Anyway, thanks so much for all your great work, and passion for the noble bass.

This is the first message I’ve ever left on a TH-cam video. Thank you for all the GREAT music you are making. Next week I’m buying myself a Bass for my 50th birthday. I’ve never touched a guitar before in my life. Well other than going to the guitar store a few times a week for the last 6 weeks and plucking out the C major scale over and over on various Basses LOL. Your videos are a great inspiration! I’ve always been drawn to the bass line in music but most times it is mixed in so low you have to strain your ears to hear it. You featuring these lines is indeed very educational. You are providing a great service. Thank you- P.S. you are a funny guy! “That was a dark day” & “Sure you were mister... sure you were...” LOL

I haven't responded to any comments left on this video because the response was so overwhelming that I felt, "If I respond to one comment, I'll have to respond to them all." But, in your case, I will make an exception. Thank "you" for the kind words and I truly wish you all the best on your musical journey. I'm so happy to hear that you'll be starting to play the bass and I hope you derive as much joy and satisfaction from playing as I have. Please remember that before the joy and satisfaction hit, there will be plenty of thigh-pounding frustration, but that's all part of the journey. If there's anything I can ever do to assist you, please don't hesitate to reach out. Take care.

Hey Man! Sorry it took me a bit to reply to this. We went on vacation and then honestly I'm so bad at youtube it took me a while to find this comment again. I got my bass one week ago and I'm so happy! Its a Yamaha TRBX 304. I had my first lesson the day after I took it out of the box and I think I'm going to like my teacher a lot. After a week of playing ever spare minute of every day my fingers feel like raw hamburger and my back is kind of sore when I wake up but man do I LOVE IT. And yes lots of frustration but Its so worth it those few times that my fingers cooperate and I peck out a blues line or the first few bars of My Girl. LOL. Lots of C Major scale stuff. Anyway thanks again for all you do! Heh, I just re-read this and I sound like a 10 year old instead of a 50 year old. I guess the bass will keep me young!

I can really relate to your story. I too got really burned out and music became a job that on New Years about 3yrs ago I literally put my bass under the bed and would rather do laundry than look at it. I was very bitter and felt disgusted at the 30+ years of hard work and dedication I had put into this “dream” I had. I did become a “professional musician” whatever that means. . However I just couldn’t do it anymore. But to make a long yet similar story short, recently I have left the 6-string under the bed and pulled out my Brother-in-law’s Mexican J-Bass and started to re-learn some Rush covers. That’s when I ran across you on here. So now I too have ended up back in my room learning Rush songs and how to enjoy it again. I know my story isn’t unique but I just thought I’d share it. Thank you for what you do.

Hahaha! I love this! I actually had a similar incident with my electric guitar teacher, back before I discovered Rush and that I'd much rather do what Geddy does. I showed up one day with a Nirvana cassette, and I think he tried to teach me "The Man Who Sold The World". That lasted about five minutes before he said "Ok, what I'd really like to teach you today is a song called 'Greensleeves'. Have you heard that song?". Yea, I think that was my last lesson as well. I think I sat the guitar down for quite a while until I heard those great bass runs in "Subdivisions", and I said to myself, "Wow, I wanna do that. I need a bass". So I got one, and unlike you, I've always been a bit tone deaf, so I had my mom print out Rush tablature at her work. Rush got me through some hard times in my life, but like you, there was a point that I put the bass down. I became obsessed with learning the acoustic guitar. I recently picked it back up a few years ago, and you are the kid you saw on TH-cam that really rekindled playing bass for me. Thought you should know that. You made me say "Man, I think maybe I could do that again, I totally forgot how fun that is!". I'm interested in the original stuff you wrote, is there any way to hear that? Might it be out there in the ether somewhere? Also, it's funny that I happened to stumble upon this video today, July 3rd, 2 years to the date that you posted it.

Troy, Funny how things fall into the right place at the right time - like they did for you in creating this channel. I'm sure there are many reasons people watch your videos. For me (a hack drummer) I've always loved the bass low-end sound and the way a drummer and base player can lock into and create the groove of a song. I discovered Rush in the 2112 crowd. I too had gone from KISS to Skynyrd (and others) until a friend lent me his cassette of 2112. I never gave it back...you're playing has helped me understand and appreciate even more the greatness of Rush! It's a music that has hit home with me for close to 40 years and is worth, and even stands up to, scrutiny - in a good way! You enjoy getting messages from your subscribers - we enjoy getting a message that THJ has just uploaded a new video. Keep them coming and thanks for all the time and effort you have put into them!

Just a quick note to say, I enjoyed your long winded message. Finding out how someone who has a quailty I admire got to where they did is fascinating and amazingly, I followed a similar path except, I started up in a band in the 7th grade and loved performing. I did that for 11 years until I faced reality, knew I couldn’t support a wife and kids as a musician and gave it up for 30 years. I was coaxed back into playing by my wife and an old band mate on my 50th birthday and I have been using your channel to learn to play again. It’s been great spending time with you working on great songs. It's kinda like sitting front of a record player going over a song but better. Dragging the curser is easier than moving the needle. I went up and down the bass rack and played everyone at least twice. My Holy Grail was a 1971Gibson EB-3 slotted peg head. I gave it up after High School to learn a Trade. Got married raised 3 kids put them threw College.I always had a Bass and amp though. This past January my Drummer Bud from High School called me. Hey do you still have a Bass and Amp? Sure why? I just bought myself a drum set! Start practicing! Keep up the great videos Troy! Being schooled on a short scale. I now own 2 MIM Fender Mustang PJ's. Over the years I owned a few Fender P Basses, Music Man Sterling, A few Jazz Basses, a Hofner Cavern, a Warwick Fretless Corvette Standard [I traded my EB-3 for it after Junior bought me tickets for opening night Cream at The Garden]. The short scale Mustangs do it for me. Thank You for your Video's because even though I didn't play seriously over the years I watched your video's and they kept a fire burning in me to once in a while pick it up and play some riffs. I'm retired now and 62. I am MUCH more serious about playing now Thanks again!

You are of immense value to the bass community and your dedication to quality and accuracy are obvious. I play along with your videos on a daily basis learning songs for my cover band and am indebted to you for facilitating my learning process. You are gifted and humble, but you should be proud of your contributions to the arts and humanity because they foster better music and music fosters happier people. I also enjoyed hearing that we have pretty much the same early trajectory: Kiss to Black Sabbath to Rush (All The World's A Stage in particular) to Kansas, etc. Love your basses, too... nice to see someone playing Guilds! Again, thank you for all the effort you put into these videos.

"gravitated more toward the horror" I'd have never guessed (sarcasm). I am dying to hear about the wall of horror heads (too lazy to search). Thanks for adding, I don't know, flavor, background, perspective to these videos I enjoy so much. I am one of the biggest Rush fans I know (but certainly less so than you). You, my shy friend, have made it possible for me (theoretically) to play air bass to a Rush song whenever one comes on (as I copy your movements). I truly appreciate what you do on this channel. Never quit, never surrender (kinda a sci fi nerd here). ROCK ON!!, you cool ass dude, you

at 10:30... I do that too. I work in a building after house so I can play on my lunch time. Store a amp in a cabinet and bass in my utility closet. It not for that I'd not have all the songs covered on my channel and make much head way with my original band's music. It's a godsend and part of why I stay there.

I just recently subscribed, but I have sporadically watched your videos for about a year. I started playing bass at 15, and I stopped about fourteen years later (not sure why) because I loved it and still do. Like you, rself I took about a few months of lessons, they were boring, however my teacher did teach me Freewill lol. Geddy Lee is a huge influence, he is my favorite without question, and you play a lot like him, getting in those subtle notes that most of other youtube players I''ve listened to miss completely. You are part of the reason that I've started playing again., just for the pure enjoyment of it. So, thank you much for all of your work here.

"Uhm's" and the "And So" is a natural link of communication. Don't give yourself a hard time over it. It is absolutely natural unless you are reading a script. Please cut yourself a lot of slack and relax and just be yourself. the story will flow naturally as you are natural anyway. Thanks for sharing your story. It is baffling to me that you don't like to entertain to audiences as you are a great bass player and so gifted. I am so glad you are able to still share your talent and you have helped so many and inspired many people as well. I am glad for the fact that you found your joy in music once again. It would have been tragic to see this talent fall to sleep and never be reawakened. I want to wish you every success with your music and with your life in general. You are obviously a person who has impressed many people including many super music stars. That is for good reason, trust me. May God bless you and may you always have your music and talent to reach out to and to reach others as well through that music. It is a gift that you so willingly share and I thank you so much for that.

Troy, you are absolutely the best. I am reminded of an old quote from some obscure sci-fi... "Shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased." That is the power of your music... of music in general, but especially yours, so obviously over brimming with joy.
Thanks to google's nasty G+ experiment, I was cut off from comments for a very long while, so it's been a long time since I've posted a comment on one of your videos, but I've been here the whole time, enjoying every one of them. Every time you post a Rush cover, I immediately pass it on to my best friend who is also a huge Rush fan, lately with the tagline of "In today's installment of Wal era songs (re-)covered on the Wal..." I know he absolutely enjoys listening to your renditions every bit as much as I do. Your tributes to Chris, covering some of my all time favorites from the Yes catalog, are also among my favorites from the time-of-no-comments.
I know you are reluctant to hear it, but you increase all of our joy, Troy, and we're all very, very grateful for it. I hope you will see your way clear to continue doing so for a very long time to come.
    With my fondest regards!

I think many of us can share some of the same experiences as you. I Started playing in the 1979, went on the road playing with a cover band for 3 years and even backed up some larger well known bands. Then I gave it up for a home and build a family... now, I find myself learning all over again, and I keep gravitating to your channel day after day for instruction and inspiration on the bass... thank you for what you do!

Troy, I can't thank you enough for the channel and your transparency. I've been playing for years and now my 10 year old daughter decided the electric bass is going to be her musical focus...switching from the clarinet 😁 she listens to isolated bass tracks and she can tell you who James Jamerson is and why he's her favorite. All that to say, thank you Sir! You inspire a lot of aspiring players and multiple generations too.

I can’t thank you enough for all the videos you’ve done over the years. Your Rush covers have been a tremendous asset to me, and they really rekindled my love of Rush through learning the bass parts with the aid of your covers.
I’ve seen lots of different transcriptions and other bass cover videos, but yours always seemed to be the most accurate and well preformed. You certainly have a great talent for figuring those parts out, especially on a lot of the late 80s stuff that can be really hard to hear sometimes. So again, thank you so much!

    Thumbs Up...
I started playing Guitar and Bass in the late 70s, my best friend played drums and our other friends played as well. Most of us were big into KISS and I, being a big Horror fan, was immediately drawn to Gene.
Over the years I spent time playing along to albums, jamming with friends and in and out of cover bands. In the early 90's I
started to get discouraged with having to deal with all the Attitudes and Egos so I decided to put the Bass down and take a break from playing music, that "Break" turned in to 15 yrs.
Around 2006 I got the itch to play again and I decided to start back up. I regret letting so much time go by, but I'm happy that I'm back at letting my finger do the walking...
Thank You for this video, I enjoy listening to you play.
    Rock On!

Thanks for all you do Troy! It was great to hear your story! I've been a huge Rush fan for many years and a Bass player since early high school. Though I used to play along with some of my favorite songs, I never invested the time to figure most of them out note for note. Plus to be honest, it was tough to hear and understand what the heck Geddy was playing so fast! I have been getting back into learning some of the classics now and it's been a huge help being able to watch and listen to what you do. I'm still playing in a classic rock band and we are doing a few Rush tunes. So it's been very helpful to practice along with your videos! You have inspired me to learn some of the tough songs that I may have never tried to learn before. Though I'm not a spring chicken any more I still am striving to get better and expand my horizons as much as I can. Cheers and keep on playin!
