  • “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” by the band “Looking Glass” off of their self titled album that came out in 1972 and featured Piet Sweval on bass.
This bass was made by the fellow who has worked on my basses over the last few years. My musician friends who have a guitar tech/repair person they trust and whose work they respect should consider themselves very fortunate. To be a bass player and to find a tech who primarily works on basses is beyond fortunate. I'll add more info on the bass when I get it from Joe.

Joe finally got back to me with the specs. Here they are...
    32” scale
    24 frets
Mahogany body core, walnut accent line, maple burl top
Mahogany neck, macassar ebony fingerboard, pau ferro neck binding
Ebony, walnut, mahogany and flamed maple headstock veneers and pick up cover
    Kent Armstrong Music Man pickup
    Passive electronics
    Hipshot hardware
    Pretty sure that’s it!

This song always takes me back to being a kid when life was care free and everyone you love is still alive. When your parents are still young and aunts and uncles are the coolest. A roadhouse cafe with a jukebox selector at every table. Three songs for a quarter, you pick them and the excitement builds as you wait for yours to come through the cue. Finally they pop up ... Magic Carpet Ride and Born to be Wild by SteppenWolf and Brandy. If your Uncles were cool, those were their go to songs and knowing them, I just imagined how hot Brandy must have been. Great playing and I like when you follow up playing without the song to really see and hear what you are playing!

Troy....THIS was an early birthday present for me and my dear sweet late Twin brother who absolutely adored this song when it came out back in the early 70's! We of coursed shared a room and at that time we shared our own 45 record player and Jim played this non stop as in yada yada yada! I hear this today and I can hear my Mom yelling at Jim to "knock it off already"...LOLOLOL Tears and a Huge Grin on my mug! We were my Mom's Heckle and Jeckle and I am missing my playmate Big Time! LOVED your story about your Bass Guy Joe C.....and I have no doubt that he lit up when you mentioned "Carl Thompson Bass" !! Superb as always! I saw Piet Sweval on bass guitar when he was in 'Starz'. They were the opening band for 'Sweet'. This was in April '78. Of course, Sweet were incredible and opened with 'Action'. They played their catalog of hits, etc. I liked a power pop tune Starz played called 'Hold On To The Night' which was the bands single at the time.

Wow! I praise the gods of the TH-cam algorithm for delivering me to this video. I was listening to Brandy while in the car the other day and, after hearing this song for decades, what caught my ear was how intricate the bass line was. I made a mental note to find a good cover on YT and it was the wall of amazing masks behind you that won my click. As a horror fan myself (sitting next to a lifesize statue of Ash from Army of Darkness at the moment), I have to give you props on that collection. Of course, watching you play this great song so effortlessly and flawlessly was even more amazing. New subscriber and fan won. Thanks! Ed A.

My guitar teacher repaired his own tube amps and built some of his own guitars. He led me through a couple simple repairs, which gave me the confidence to be my own tech. Now I maintain my own guitars and scratch build amps. It's so nice not to worry about what might happen to your gear after you hand it over the counter. Very satisfying, too.

Superb craftsmanship. Your description of it having a "polite" sound is spot on, but I could also see it having a not so polite sound playing in a smokey New York jazz club in a three piece with some drums and piano. The lead female vocalist is struggling to make it big, but she definitely has the pipes to hang in there with the greats. Sorry, I got lost for a second. Great tune and dynamic playing as usual.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I just put the specs up in the text area. Yeah, "polite" seemed like the right term. It blends in and sticks out just enough without being intrusive. Personally, I don't mind a bit of intrusiveness in my basses. Thanks for the visualization.

I do all my own work, I have all the tools and equipment. This all started in the early 80's when round wounds ate fretboards on fretless basses which is almost all I played. I had to block the fretboards about every six months, then I learned to do fretwork and everything else. I studied electronics for several years and the rest is history. I actually enjoy it. A very good rendition of a classic song. I also can appreciate the playing without the backing track to hear this bass as well as hearing your notes clearly. Sometimes, unless it's mixed right, I find it difficult to clearly hear the bass line being played. I do like seeing the machine heads lined up to the strings rather than the head. Gives it a nicely engineered look.
