    In this video I’m showing one way of connecting and recording an XLR microphone to an iPhone 15 Pro Max. This includes using a USB audio interface, or what some call a USB sound card, a Shure SM7B for my dynamic microphone example, paired with a Triton Fethead inline preamplifier and I’m also using my trusty Sennheiser ME64 as my example of a condenser microphone.
    I’m also using the Blackmagic Camera App. Which allows the recording of an external audio source, simultaneously with its video recording.
    This video is a basic general overview of a workflow that can be used as the basis for a number of setups. You can use other USB audio interfaces that are class compliant, along with many other video apps and also audio only and music production apps, along with many different dynamic and condenser microphones.
    Here’s some of the stuff that I use in the video and I list more of my usual audio and video equipment further down in this description. But don’t forget, you don’t have to use exactly what I use, just use my setup as a starting point for your own setup.

      @@DavidHarry out of curiosity, does this work with an iPhone 14 Pro Max if I got a lightening to USB adapter? Or it’s only from 15 Pro Max and up? I have the same audio interface and rode mod mics but can’t pick up interface on the Blackmagic camera app even though the interface is powered up.

    this is a pretty good tip as smart phones are getting better and better each year and with apps like the black magic, a professional microphone makes sense. cheers!

      Alright, Tone. Although I didn't set up the camera as best as it could have been. Yes, these phone cameras are getting really good and it does make a lot of sense pairing a good mic with them. This type of setup, with someone who can use the iPhone camera better than me :) Can easily produce a good video for TH-cam. Cheers, Dave.

    Excellent.
    Love the head/mic harness. Used similar ideas myself. Sometimes the most stupid looking of things produce really good results.

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, Tom. Nice one, thanks 👍 Yes, sometimes the crazy ideas do work out. What I’m effectively doing by putting the mic on my head is essentially the same thing as using a lavalier. As in, the microphone is always close to your mouth. Although, in this setup the microphone constantly tracks the same position to your mouth as you move your head about, which a lav doesn’t. Plus this mic is much better than any lav and a lot more versatile. This is how I do most of my V/O for my tutorials and demonstrations and when I’m capturing the screen of my computers and games consoles to my Ninja V, I do the same thing. In fact, the middle section of this video where I show the close-ups of the setup, was done with the mic on my head, using an XLR to 3.5mm cable to connect to my ZV1 which was recording the overhead shots. For that section I was using the same Sennheiser ME64 that was in the video and on my head because it can also be self powered as well as phantom powered. I’ve also found some USB C adapter cables for connecting ECM mics, like lavaliers and small on-camera “video mics”, direct to the iPhone. I will try and show those soon and those videos will be shorter because the setup is much easier and doesn’t take too much explanation. Cheers, Dave.

    I heard that the iPhone can output 4.5 watts in the usb-c version up from 0.3 when it had lightning. If the audio interface is taking 48 volts, then the current would only be 0.09375 amps I think, not 100% sure. I've been able to power a lot of stuff off of the usb-c hub.

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Max. Yes, phantom power itself is a very low current. However, a USB audio interface has to have power for its general circuitry, the ADC and DAC circuitry, the headphone amplifier etc. I’m not sure what that all totals to but I was surprised that the iPhone can’t power certain SSDs by comparison. I don’t know what the current limitation is on this iPhone but Apple could have made it higher than it is. Especially when the iPad Mini 6’s USB C interface, which is older, can power the same SSDs that this iPhone can’t. I will do a couple of comparisons with the S24 Ultra, it will be interesting to see if there’s any difference with high powered SSDs. Cheers, Dave.

    Hi, I'm using an IPhone 13 for this, and the audio interface requires too much power for the phone to power, do you know a way around this?

    Hi. I noticed in your setup you were getting a mono signal (left I think). I’m getting the same with a Rhode NT1a through a Focusrite interface into an iPhone 12 Pro. How do you get that mono signal into both stereo channels when recording video on the iPhone?

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. Yes, it only records on one track, or one side of the stereo recoding, left. I just centre the track in post in my video editor, I use Resolve Studio . Cheers, Dave.

    Mate this is exactly the set up I have at home except I do have the rode mics. My question is when filming with the new log res. Is there a way to also connect an external Hard drive that can just have the video podcast recorded on there so that we’re not using all the iPhone storage space? Log res only allows 26 mins before the iPhone storage is filled. Thank you!

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, use a powered USB hub or dock and you can then attach a number of things at the same time, including the external SSD. Check my videos I do that exact same thing but with an iPad Pro and the Blackmagic Camera app, which is exactly the same as for the iPhone. Cheers, Dave.
