Dude ... you're freaking awesome! Everybody needs to take a lesson from you on how to simplify tutorials. I am excited to try this with my Scarlett. Thanks brother!
It’s important to note that if your interface is solely powered by USB (like my 2i2), you have to use the dongle that has both the USB A female AND lightning female. That way you can have power coming in through the lightning port while you’re recording. Otherwise, your interface will not receive enough power.
Yes! Thank you. I have the Focusrite 2i2, and it works, but like Shnapps12 pointed out 2 years ago, you will need the dongle with the lightning jack so that you can power your iphone while recording. Otherwise there doesn't seem to be enough power going to the Focusrite. My next video will be recorded with my Shure 55 mic. Finally!! Can't say enough thanks.
So I have a presonus and got the apple brand and nothing happened, then I see this pop up in my OS to update my the adapter and then i click it and it says updating “Apple usb camera adapter” and I had no power. As soon as it’s done updating I have power and my presonus audio interface turns on and I can finally hear myself through my headphones and it sounds SOOO GOOD!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Also -with iPhone 12 and update, it works in ANY app, like TikTok, Smule, or camera. It all works!
I have presonus, and rode nt1a .. i always wanted to try using it for live streaming on tiktok.. as per show in the video, to have it work you need to connect the usb camera adapter only after opening the camera apps right? So is it the same when trying to use it for tiktok streaming? I cannot try it yet, just saw this video now. I will order for the apple usb camera adapter tomorrow! 😅😅
Focusrite 2i2 works with every direction you shared here! Only one thing important is I always have to use charging cable to make sure it can work. I have an iPhone 8 ha ha.
Thank you for the video. I tried it and it works better than expected! My setup: Behringer X1204USB Mixer connected via original "Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter" to my iPhone SE (2016 with iOS 13+) then I use the "Moment Pro Camera App" which has a VU-Meter built-in for proper level setting. This setup never loses the USB Connection to the Mixer even if I go out of the camera app and back in again. The audio of the video even gets played back to the mixer in video replay mode. It works great!
I have encountered audio latency in the iphone videos I took. This means the video and the audio signal is not in sync. This had to be somehow expected. The only way to compensate it was so far in the video postproduction software "shotcut" which I use. There you can set the "Sync" value of the audio to a negative millisecond value (in my case -140ms). Then I export the video and it looks okay.
Here is an update from my attempts to do this with a Tascam US-4x4. I first ordered a generic camera/lightening adapter and it didn't work. I ordered the official camera/lightening adapter and tried it. The first few times it wouldn't work. The camera app would even stop recording after I hit record. Then after leaving it connected for about 15 seconds before hitting record it started working on my Ipad. I then repeated this on my Iphone 8 and it worked flawlessly! Thank you for this information and add the Tascam US-4x4 as an interface that is compatible with camera adapter and Iphone.
Good point - sometimes the interface needs a little time to boot up and start talking to the iPhone before you start recording, or else weird things like that can happen!
Yeah getting vocals in that way has worked no problem, through my analog mixer, but why can't I get the music through another channel to work?? I'm grateful for any help, thank you for the video
This has worked fine for me, except I’m only getting signal from input one in the left channel and signal from input to in the right channel. Do you know if there’s a setting on the focusrite somewhere that allows it to generate a signal for both sides, so my iPhone videos will have audio and left and right speakers?
I’m having the same exact problem, I even had working audio without opening the camera app first, but yours is the only comment I’ve seen that even mentions this. I thought he might cover it in his video but no luck… Did you ever figure out how to resolve it. The interface records audio to stereo in other apps like GarageBand, but the camera app treats the focusrite as 2 separate mono channels by default and there’s just silence on the right where presumably the interface is expecting an instrument. That’s the disappointing thing about the focusrite, it doesn’t have a button for summing the xlr to mono

Thank you ssooo much!! i have been trying to find out how to use an audio interface to record videos for 2 months now!! thank you so much for clear and brief tutorial
Tascam US 20x20, iPhone 8+, worked fine. Thanks for the video! I was trying it last night when the adapter arrived and getting no sound. The order of operations is indeed the secret.
Please, can someone help me sort mine out. My microphone sound is coming out from the left and my piano sound is coming out from the right? How do I sort this?
Thank you so much for this video brother, I had been fighting with this problem for the last two or three months with it recording fine one minute and then nothing on the next video. I was coming out of my mixer / monitor out and recording straight into the iPhone. I’ve pretty much got an analog recording studio in an 8 space rack that sounds amazing so you saved my life! I just had to spent $50 on another adapter because I got mad because it was not recording sound and jerked it out and it broke the tab off😮🙄 I had used that back up adapter once. Thanks again 👍👍👍
This process works on a UR44. Using this procedure you get sound out of both L and R. If not followed you get sound only out of L side. You can edit later in software and set audio to Mono.
Thank you so much. This is the only video I found after a frustrating search that helped me record video and sound on my iPhone. It's always those little quirks of the equipment that drive me crazy and you pointed them right out. I'm using my brand new Scarlett Solo third-generation to record videos for our church TH-cam channel. This is our only connection as a congregation. So, It's really important. Have a great day!
Thank you so much. I didn't realise how important the sequence is in order to work properly. I was doing a few trials and I had no sound and was not able to figure out what was going on. It worked before..... Now I know exactly why.
Great advice man-works like a charm👏 To help with no interruptions or possible disconnects put your iPhone into ‘aeroplane’ mode before opening the camera/video app. 👍
Whenever I use this method my audio only comes out mono on one side of the headphones or speaker. I recorded a whole TH-cam video and it only plays out peoples left speaker. Anyone else experience this?
Yes, and I have tried everything I can think of to cure it, with no luck. For the first video I made, it was fine and played out of both sides. Not it wont. I've changed out everything. Adaptor, cables, phone, etc. Please let me know if you ever find a solution. Thanks!

I was curious to start using my higher end mic in the raw video recordings on another channel to combine with voice overs - a lot less production work as I'd usually re-record all the audio in post
Thank you so much for this brilliant info, exactly what I was looking for! You have no doubt saved hundreds of us from going insane trying to figure this stuff out, much appreciated!!
I record a video and use 2 mics through a focusrite 2i2 and it pans left and right for some reason during playback.. it's strange and doesn't always do this.
Great video. I was looking to use my camera to record live vocals against a backing track. So essentially, I was trying to record myself singing, but the input would be my laptop’s output of my vocals + the backing track playing (e.g. from TH-cam). My solution to this is to try and do this with a second microphone up against my stereo output - too often my raw vocals out power the output of the nearby stereo speakers. Cheers.
Thank you so much for noting the correct sequence! (First set the camera to video, then connect to audio.) I just had to trash some videos because the sound kept cutting out. You have saved me a ton of time trying to figure out what was happening and how to fix it.
For those of you having the issue of the recording only coming through one ear or speaker on playback, the solution is to set your phone to Mono in the accessibility settings and on the camera. Doing it only on the camera will not work.
Hi, thank you so much for this comment. The iPhone has a camera option for record in stereo that can be disabled. The iPad doesn’t have this option though.
Using iPhone 12, recording through Scarlett 2i2. Works great with the adapter with lighting and usb like you said! Thanks! Only thing is listening back to the video with headphones audio only plays in left ear, can’t find a way in settings to fix that. Hopefully no one will be listening with headphones!
Hey just an update... got my "dongle" in the mail and tried it out with my focusrite cardioid mic, and it DOES WORK, so thanks! I did not get official APPLE adapter, but I got an Apple Certified adapter. I have Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 1st Gen, so a bit older. It powered my condenser mic. I connected the mic to ONE input on the front, but the playback was only in ONE EAR. Which tells me that my XLR inputs do not have stereo capability. Does that mean I will need to get a mic splitter cable/adapter, so the mic goes through both inputs on the front? Please advise.
It works like you said. I Order thr USB 3 camera adapter from Amazon same day delivery, so I ordered the fifine mixer with built in interface but I forgot that my Rockville Preamp PPA52 which has a built in usb interface on the back panel and followed your prompts and works like a champ. No more using that 2 cent mic on the phone it self.
Thanks so much for the TIP on starting the cam video app first and only then plug in the usb-lighting cable. After numerous recoding challenges (1 channel only, static ruining the recording, etc) i found your post and resolved my problem completely. i’m using an iPhone 12pro + Focusrite Scarlet solo + RODE NT1 mic.
Thanks, I was looking for a tutorial where people didn't try to tell me what an audio interface was LOL and who explained the part after connecting to the iPhone (the important part since there's no visual feedback). Reporting that this works with the Behringer Flow 8, but I had to set the USB to "Streaming Mode" for it to run for me.
I’ve tried this exactly and the Scarlett is on and is indicating that it is picking up sound but it’s never recorded with the video on the iPhone. Any ideas why??
Steinburg UR12 and Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd gen - both confirmed working on my iPad Pro (2018). GarageBand, phone camera and live streaming (twitch/Facebook). Both my electro acoustic guitar and Behringer dynamic mic sound great! Thanks for your videos dude. Stay safe.
I just got a Presonus iTwo. Connecting it with one mic input only produces a track in the left channel or right channel depending on which input is used. The only solution I can think of is to use an external mixer and then use its outputs as two inputs left and right into the box in order to get a stereo recording. Anyone have a better solution? Also this limits the ability to stream audio from a computer like a backing track since you can’t connect to a computer and iDevice at the same time. The computer overrides the iDevice connection.
The following video is the only method I see to get a stereo recording on my iPhone and iPad... by using a mixer to the iTwo to my iDevices. th-cam.com/video/I0ox3xPkAdA/w-d-xo.html

Hey - i'm using a behringer (umc22) audio interface with my condensor mic and followed the set up into iphone. My problem is that it's only playing through left channel in headphones- how do i solve this? Thanks!

Thank you so much. I use this technique all the time with my phone interface too small condenser mics and the Apple USB unit that you explained I’ve been doing it for about a year now this video is absolutely the best in explaining this thank you so much.
Hello! my iPhone 11 works with my Scarlett 18i8; however, it only works with inputs 1 & 2 and with a huge issue... It only records inputs 1 & 2 and in stereo (input 1 is panned hard left and input 2 is panned hard right). I want to record both inputs in mono so both channels are in the center. Please help. thanks!
Thank you so much Russ…! After hours of searching I found the video I needed…! 🎉 Quick question, how could I add effects…? Could I download an app or could I run my DAW on my MacBook somehow…??? 🤔 Thank you again…! ☀️
Great video. Only problem for me is …..I’m using a Boss Katana 100 into a Roland Rubix interface. It WORKS, but it sounds kinda crappy. I wanted to make guitar lesson videos and not have to use my DAW to sync audio with a video. I was hoping I could do it all in one step and record the video AND the audio simultaneously. It works, but the Katana sounds like crap going into the phone and amazing going into my DAW.
I was connecting the usb camera kit before launching the camera app. Thanks for the tip of launching the camera app before connecting the usb audio interface. I’m using the Audient ID14 and it works on iphone and ipad. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the help. I also found a way to bring in audio while recording a video on iPhone. You need first pro camera by moment app. Works best letting you monitor incoming audio levels and mic gain control. Use a small portable MP3 player and connect audio to trrs to trs sliter to get two mic in audio and mic and one to monitor with headphones. Then you get quality audio in the video while recording a pre edit video
Hi, I tried this tonight with my focusrite 3rd gen, and I only got mono so playback was only in one earbud. I must admit I didn’t follow this order as you have stated, came across your video just now while looking to sort the issue. You reckon that’s the issue? do you have stereo sound on playback?
Do you need an interface at all if your mic is usb-c to usb. I would think the Apple camera adapter would be good enough plugged in to give enough power to run the mic. I am using the HyperX Quadcast S. Great video.
[Update below] Hey y'all, this didn't work for me... yet! I'm using a Behringer UM2 interface and connecting to my phone via a USB to lightning cable w/o a power source. I'm going to try this out with the camera connector with the extra female lightning port so the phone has a power source. Currently getting the "not enough power" error. Update! I got the camera connector with the extra female lightning port, and it works now! As long as the audio interface is powered on while connected to my phone, it works on any app. One little thing: the audio only got recorded in the Left stereo channel. I switched the phone to only play in Mono (not a big deal for me) and everything is good now. TL;DR If the cable Russ suggests doesn't work for you, try using the cable that has a female USB AND lightning port for extra power.
@Jordan Randolph Do you know if you can get audio out from your phone to your interface at all times. Im planning on hooking up a dac amp combo to my Iphone for better sound quality. It would be great if you tell me your experience.
I find that the stereo/mono mix behavior is kinda erratic - sometimes multi-input interfaces record one channel left and another channel right (and any additional inputs don’t get recorded), other times it sums them all to mono. AFIK there’s no solution to that, this isn’t really a supported use case so we’re kinda stuck with whatever bugs we find.
Hey I just saw your comment I use the same thing but I try to record voice and guitar at the same time and my voice is left and guitar is right did you figure out how to fix your problem let me know could really help me with what I do thank you

It doesn't work with my Behringer U-PHORIA UMC22
I'm glad it records in Stereo - some iOS automagically making it Stereo when the interface typically records in Mono Left channel by default?
I’ve tried this exactly and the Scarlett is on and is indicating that it is picking up sound but it’s never recorded with the video on the iPhone. Any ideas why??
Steinburg UR12 and Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd gen - both confirmed working on my iPad Pro (2018). GarageBand, phone camera and live streaming (twitch/Facebook). Both my electro acoustic guitar and Behringer dynamic mic sound great! Thanks for your videos dude. Stay safe.
Can I do live streaming with Focusrite 2i2 3gen using Mixer and iPhone?
Need help
Thank you in advance.
@@nareshjaviya5182 yes you can. Hope this helps. th-cam.com/video/G_wl94NMPmU/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! You’re right it only works if you open the video first!

I use M Audio interface for guitar direct line into IPhone 8. I run my guitar amp output to interface input then the TRS headphone output jack to TRRS into IPhone lightning cable. It mutes ambient sound becomes line in😉
Amzing Tutorial! Great fun listening to you telling us what happens if we dont do it exactly as you told us to.
Kchhhh
I need to try this 👍👍👍, I hope I can later open TikTok live stream when I got the sound working.
Hey - i'm using a behringer (umc22) audio interface with my condensor mic and followed the set up into iphone. My problem is that it's only playing through left channel in headphones- how do i solve this? Thanks!
I have the same problem!,,, HELP
Works on my Scarlett 2i2. I'm using a Samsung android btw.
It worked perfectly with my steinberg ur22 mk2 - brilliantly explained! Thank you so much for this from Stockholm, Sweden. Time to make some live looping performances.
hi carola! I'm curious if you - have your steinberg connected to power with a 5V adapter to make it work here? would be amazing to know. thx Jeffery
I tried with my UR22 and only get sound on the left side when I playback, any tips?
Thank you so much. I use this technique all the time with my phone interface too small condenser mics and the Apple USB unit that you explained I’ve been doing it for about a year now this video is absolutely the best in explaining this thank you so much.
Ty so much for clarifying getting into camera/video app before you plug in. I think that was my problem.
Hello! my iPhone 11 works with my Scarlett 18i8; however, it only works with inputs 1 & 2 and with a huge issue... It only records inputs 1 & 2 and in stereo (input 1 is panned hard left and input 2 is panned hard right). I want to record both inputs in mono so both channels are in the center. Please help. thanks!
Can you please list all of the products and the links to purchase them? Thank you so much!
Can you record bass and vocals at the same time from two channels and have the audio match up with the video
It says to much power for
when I plug it in
was this a school project or something? cause you were eloquent and well organized! Great job
This is sick man! I wonder why sometimes my mic works and sometimes not. Now I know exactly why
Thanks!! Worked perfectly for me on a new Scarlett Solo and iPhone Xr. The adapter was the key. 🤘
You reckon that’s the issue? do you have stereo sound on playback?
where is the link or description in the comments so we can search and order the correct connection? but great knowledge thx
Se2020, camera usb3 adapter, powered usb hub, 2i2. No problem
Will the iPhone record stereo audio using this method?
Hi, thanks for your post video, but i got mono output after following your steps. any comments for that?
100%, good tip, Jordan!
Hey I just saw your comment I use the same thing but I try to record voice and guitar at the same time and my voice is left and guitar is right did you figure out how to fix your problem let me know could really help me with what I do thank you
@@perpetualswing4635 same here. Hopefully there will be solution to combine both channels into 1 output
Thanks for the hot tip about opening the camera app prior to connecting the adapter!
This video saved me HOURS! Thank you my guy. I used a M-AUDIO Interface by the way and it worked. The camera part should be included in the INTRUCTIONS lol
Cograts :) got it with a CQ18T trough USB C and yet, could't get it via media Apps :(
Hi, I have a question with the focusrite Scarlett on recording in iPhone camera. The record sounds only on one side. Do you know how to fix it?
Up ! I have the same problem
Just found out. Go in setting and put the audio to mono before recording and then its gonna be all right
@@italo1aguiar Can you explain how to do it?
Set audio to mono doesn't solve the problem, it just makes your own earphone to sound equally both sides...
Yeah, i noticed it afterwards. Sorry. But it’s crazy, cause on Instagram it get a stereo audio somehow.
Thank you for that. What is the camera app, and will it get stereo sounding.
This is the only video on TH-cam that makes sense on this topic lol thank you I just need more further steps and advice on my setup
didnt work , my audio interface isnt even powering on
Hi, Russ. Thank you for the video! One more question, how to connect with a keyboard with iPhone camera use audio interface?
Wow! So can I use for recording vocals on my iPhone?
