    Finally an honest and realistic rig ( for me at least ). I’ve been watching a ton of the videos planning on dipping my toes, but most sponsored videos showcase brand loyalty and $700- $2000 rigs. For that price point I’ve been better off investing the additional money into my canon eso RP for the video side of things. So thanks!!🙏🏽

    I got a hub, and I was able to use HDMI out, power delivery in, DJI Mic, and external SSD. I have been exploring like a variable scenario setup.
    Minimalist: Only SSD, use local recording on DJI mic
    Gimbal: DJI Osmo Mobile 6, local recording on DJI Mic
    Portable: Cage + Wireless Mic + SSD (maybe monitoring)
    Static: Tripod + Mic + SSD + HDMI monitoring + wall power
    One thing I have been looking at is the monitoring portion, you can use Airplay in a lot of cases, like to a Macbook Pro or an Apple TV, which works pretty well. You can also use AirDroid Cast to screen mirror to an iPad or iPhone. I actually have an old iPhone X that I was thinking about using as a monitor, I agree that you don't need all the features for the monitor, as its mainly about checking framing. I was also looking at getting an Atomos Ninja V or Shinobi as a monitor.
    I really hope that BMC adds support for Apple Watch to start/stop recording and for monitoring.

    Thanks man, this is a really great video about using the full potential of an iphone pro. I just switched from an dslr 📷because u get a really great image with an iphone without playing around with shutter iso aperture and dont have to spent hundreds of $/€ in better lenses. 💲Also, my opinion, the iphone work so much better in low light conditions. You dont need 3 big lights to burn your eyelight, just take some decent lights and the image looks fine. So thank you again, seeing forward to upgrade my iphone 13 to the 15 pro soon! 😃

    Great job covering the options, I love the set lighting. I did have a couple different detail questions. 1: I was wondering what is the mount holding the USB-C hub that you were using. I haven't been able to find one for that purpose. and 2: Is the Blackmagic iPhone app (which I love but is still pretty new to me) able to take in multiple USB-C audio inputs and put each on it's own separate channel (1 or 2)? As in, one channel recording a handheld or lav mic and another a nat sound mic like a usb shotgun? I'm trying find out more before buying the wrong gear.

    Excellent information. I have a question. I duplicated your setup purchasing all the same items. I have a couple problems one the video HDMI cable into the hub interferes with the holder. I May have to find one with a narrower connector. The bigger problem is the monitor. When I plug-in everything. Even with the camera in the horizontal mode, the image on the monitor is vertical and sideways.it does not go horizontal and display the same as the phone. I’ve looked everywhere for a setting to change and rotate that image but it won’t. Did you have an issue with this and how did you solve it?

  • @phoenixbwp
    @phoenixbwp ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For power from the wall? You can purchase 3 meter 100W PD & Data (10Gbps) and add 6.6foot USB C extension cord to your USB C hub. With the USB C hub I have, with 4 USB C 10Gbps and a PD port, no issues running the 15 Pro (no Dropped frames or freezing up). Also, USB C Lavalier Lapel mic, that I used in my testing.

    • @enkeierick
      @enkeierick ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My rig keeps dropping frames on my ssd why? And what hub did you try? Could it be my usb c hub? If I use black magic camera it doesn’t even show the ssd.

    • @phoenixbwp
      @phoenixbwp ปีที่แล้ว

      @@enkeierick Remember, the iPhone 15 Pro's do not deliver enough power for accessories as thought. 2. get a USB C Hub with a PD port. I bought the Selore&S-Global 4 port with PD port USB C hub & Basesailor USB C Extension Cable 6.6FT 2-Pack,Short Type C 3.1 Gen2 10Gbps 100w from Amazon. For road work, get a PD Power bank that outputs at least 65W, 100W preferred, so there's no issues with dropped frames.
      Dropped frames comes from the SSD not able to handle the data being written to it. Or not enough power to write all the data fast enough.
      I understand why most pick the Samsung SSDs, but I use SSK 1TB which is smaller but thicker. My main SSD is the ACASIS TBU405 40Gbps enclosure with Lexar 4TB NM790 NVMe. Indoor use: Small Rig Universal Phone Cage, USB C Hub with extension cable, USB C Lav mic and SSD. Outdoors use: for now, B Roll, with the SSD connected to a 6 foot 10Gbps cable sticking out of my pocket.
      While my setup doesn't look pretty or Professional? I worry about getting the shot and making the shot pretty in post!!!

      Thanks! The HDMI cable I was using is from ZILR bought at B&H Photo but unfortunately I've heard newer ones are not as reliable as the older ones from a couple years ago. But a similar cable that I also have that works great is the SmallRig ultra-thin cable. They have a couple options of shorter lengths that are great for running from a camera to monitor and they're not bulky or overpriced. www.amazon.com/SmallRig-Flexible-Supports-Ethernet-Camcorder/dp/B08LYST3GK

    Hey there! Great video I’m trying to make my own rig now, What are the drawbacks of doing this with a 5gb usbc hub instead of a 10gb

    • @semiprotech
      @semiprotech  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The main thing is just that the bandwidth available is going to be shared by all the devices that you connect. That being said, 5Gbps bandwidth is 5,000Mbps/sec and that should still be plenty to record externally and still connect other devices as needed. Even high quality video codecs including 4:2:2 10-bit usually encode at rates between 150 and 200 Mbps, so there would still be plenty of bandwidth leftover. I personally just like to be maxed out when possible but if your hub supports 5Gbps speeds that should be plenty.

    Super helpful video thank you! Clarifying question - I want to share my iPhones screen live (not recorded video) while I’m using an audio interface in GarageBand. I was thinking of using an hdmi adapter+capture card to OBS for “see” what I’m doing live, and the output of my audio interface through another one for it to hear my phone. Can I still split the usbC signal to connect my interface to GarageBand if I’m using an hdmi out? Heard mixed things about that! I don’t mind using the focusrite 4i4 4th gen with a wall adapter, I’m not sure it’s capable of doing both signals!

I should be able to test that out though, I just have to find my adapter. I do know the Rode VideoMic GO II works well and has the built-in USB-C output. It actually sounds much better over the USB output than 3.5mm as well - I actually have a video about that because the sound is so different from the two outputs.

    • @semiprotech

      The iPhone 14 Pro's lightning port doesn't have the same bandwidth as the 15's USB-C port, so a hub with multiple devices connected might be too much for it to handle (or recognize) and I don't believe an external monitor would work hardwired - though you could screen mirror to an iPad or Mac if you have one. Isn’t it cheaper to get a sony a series camera, lens for your TH-cam setup

      It would depend on a couple of things: if you already have the iPhone 15 Pro/Max because you just wanted that phone, then the cost of the additional setup is definitely less than a camera and lens. Also if you want 10-bit color which you get with ProRes Apple Log, then a mirrorless camera + lens is not likely going to be cheaper because the affordable models are likely going to have 8-bit color for video (out of the a6XXX line, only the most recent a6700 has 10-bit color). If you're ok with 8-bit color, then something like a Sony ZV-E10 ($698) plus a cheaper lens may come out less than the iPhone. I personally would recommend having a dedicated camera if you want to learn and expand your creative work, but if you've already got an iPhone 15 Pro/Max or are planning to get one regardless, it's a great way to get started. I would also point out that out of the gear I used, only the smartphone cage would not be useful if you get a camera eventually - everything else is still useful to have and can continue to be part of your setup in some way.

      Did you film this video with your iPhone? If so, how did you accomplish the shallow DOF? Is it just lighting and post? Or do you have a special lens attached? Either way, if this was filmed on your iPhone, bravo!
