Rescuing a flying-fox stuck on a balcony: this is Ficus

- Ficus is a young adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who crash landed on the same balcony Renzo was rescued from 2 days previously.
Sometimes it happens like this; sometimes there are multiple calls for bats in the same location over a few days or a few weeks, then nothing ever again, or annually around the same time of the year for a few years.
There is a huge small leafed fig tree which ripe figs at the moment so the tree is a nighttime hangout to what seems to the MOPs (Members of Public) like the entire population of flying-foxes in Sydney along with the noise, the squabbles, the mess, and did I mention the noise? Batties feeding in a tree are raucous, gregarious, squabbly, and loud in all their vocalisations.
The tree is quite inappropriately planted in a front yard and is now 30 metres high; being an existing large tree, the council won't allow removal, even when they were building the terrace development along the street; they just built the terraces around the tree.
I've been to 3 rescues in a house a few doors up the road in the last 2 years, in an internal courtyard in the house next door to the tree.
Ficus was a Mr Cranky Pants, and fanged my glucose tube again. He appears to be about the same as Renzo, with a little feist, a bit of a pain response, and enough crank and adrenaline to mask whatever injuries he may have. I do worry that he he's got a swollen penis, which is indicative of either a spinal or pelvic injury (but he has no signs of leg weakness), or a head injury.
I'm hoping he's a success story like Renzo.
Ficus is the botanical name for fig trees.
He's survived 24 hours so far but is quite squidgy.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.

Best wishes to Ficus, certified CP.
That was one cranky mista!
I would say he REALLY took umbrage with you calling him a “little” boy. He had a lot of feisty things to say, and now the adrenaline is gone. I hope him getting past the 24 hour mark, even if he is squidgy, is an indication that he will come good like Renzo and be a survivor. That is a massive tree, no wonder there are rowdy parties in fig season. Get well Ficus…✨🖤🇨🇦
Howdy, Tamarra! Well said, as always! Lifting you and Richard up in prayer!
Isn’t Ficus a handsome boy!
God bless him, and us all!
@@carolynnunes3922 he truly is a handsome boy. My Beloved Richard crossed the river April 13 2024. I am dealing with all the realities of legal requires regarding death and estate. Then I must discover how to live without him going forward. I hope this finds you and your dear Brother are well and happy, enjoying the beauties of Spring.💖🖤🇨🇦
Fingers crossed for Ficus! 🤞
Get well and stronger, Ficus!
I hope Ficus the whippersnapper pulls through. He's make a great friend to Renzo so they can have crank fests over whatever.
Oh Ficus hope you rest well tonight and are 💯 feeling better tomorrow and are a success story. 💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇
Feisty little Lord McCrankyPants 🤭
Hope he makes it , such warrior spirit has to be rewarded 😎👍🏼👋🏼🇩🇪
Hope is a survivor. Hope you give us an update in a few days.
What a feisty boy! He'll be good company for Renzo!🤣😇❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️
lol. I’m assuming you meant feisty and got “autocorrected!”
LOL, autocarrot has a lot to answer for.
@Megabattie OMG yes....I didn't catch it!
@stvbrsn yes ...thanks for the notice. I'm having retinal bleeds and didn't catch it!🙄🤣
@@stvbrsn My autocorrect changes words that should NEVER have been changed. Quiet Annoying! (Hey, autocorrect didn't change Quiet to Quite!).🤨
Amazingly noisy, awesome 🍁🦇🇨🇦
Hoping Ficus' crankiness spills over to his ability to survive, be released, and thrive! Prayers for the little one!
❤❤❤❤❤❤ I hope you survive! Good luck darlin!!!🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
Poor baby, his cries make my heart sore. I hope he feels much better soon
Thank you Meg!💕 I will keep positive prayers beautiful Mr. Ficus will make your Survivor's list.🥺🩶🦇💓 I get cranky when I hear the words "balcony" and "Fig trees"(near building complexes).🤬 I'm thankful to this MOP who cared!👍 3rd fanged glucose tube in recent videos: Mr. Burton, Renzo and now beautiful boy Ficus.😂🩶🦇💓
It’s a hard life for glucose tubes…and he didn’t break stride with his cussing Meg out, even when he bit the tube. She said he was another boy, and THEN said he was a “little” boy, I think his manhood was offended.🖤🇨🇦
@@tamarrajames3590😂😂😂👍🩶🦇🥰
@@tamarrajames3590In reading Meg’s description box, it is said that his penis was swollen, which can often indicate a pelvic injury…Meg was able to tell his sex by his organ…from a ways away!
I didn’t see her calling him a little boy as an insult to his manhood, but rather referring to his young age…
Wow! I love your sharing of who has fanged the glucose tubes!
It’s a reflection of your great love for the bats!
It is a great comment! God bless you!
@@carolynnunes3922 Meg really does give amazing detailed descriptions, in addition to rescuing, calmly talking to and giving treatment to the Bats in trouble. She's an incredible lady! The Bats are so lucky she's on their side!👍💪👱🦇🥰
Extreme fear of a huge predator "human" would make me scream in fear too. We know how our lovely Meg is helping but what goes through their minds initially. 😢
He is a supreme Cranky Pants! I hope all that crankiness will pay off for him.
It’s the adrenaline making Ficus feisty! Once it wears off, they can often get squidgy, and it’s then that any masked injuries may come to light…
He's at the squidgy stage now where he's gone flat.
I hope he is a survivor, so fingers crossed
Here's hoping for the best!
I do hope he will be ok .. the last few were not the best … but you Meg are a wonder worker .. you do all you can to help and save these batties ..❤️🦇🦇🦇🦇
I heartily second your comment!
It seemed the MOP was a tad intimidated. But at least they called for rescue. Hang in there cranky pants Fiscus! Someone needs to invent a Kevlar shield for glucose tubes. 🙂
During baby season when she's making nipples, she sometimes coats them in latex- next best thing to kevlar.
LOL I usually dip them in latex but I'm not making teats at the moment.
Hello Megabattie 🤗👋
The noisy ones always concern me. Trying to figure out how much is fear, how much is pain and how much is indignation. Fingers crossed he goes the right way.. btw i LOVE those shoes! i needs me some of those lol
Meg is a true fashion icon.🖤🇨🇦
Great, insightful comment!
Little floofer :]
I’ve haven’t heard THAT much cursing in a Long time!
Renzo a few days before Ficus, also threw a right tanty over the whole capture thing.
So cute
It must have been windy, with all of the tree litter on the balcony.
Addit: I hope he recovers. He’s very unhappy about his situation. Could high winds cause a crash?
I think he didn’t like being called a “little“ boy, after he did bigwings and everything. I bet the winds can get weird with the trees, and the glass balconies. I hope he didn’t do any serious damage, and is able to recover fully.🖤🇨🇦
Yes they can get blown around in high winds and smack into walls and glass.
It has been stormy last week.
Hope he’s ok 🤩🤩🤩💖💖🦇🦇
All the best to Ficus and Renzo. Hopefully them being stuck on the same balcony was just an odd coincidence and this doesn't become a local trend. The unfortunately placed fig tree combined with human homes does sound like a bad combo for poor batties...
Edit: Correction - the fig tree was there before the terraces. So the tree wasn't placed to be precise, it was built around.
In reading the description box, I learned that the building was built around the fig tree because of it’s age…
Kind of - the council probably wouldn't have given permission for the tree to be removed, so they gave the row of terraces a front yard, one of which had the massive tree impinging on all the adjacent terraces both sides and even across the road. This is all inner city housing which is characterised by terrace developments and narrow streets and not much parking.
@@carolynnunes3922 I stand corrected, edited the comment accordingly. I seem to have misread the same description
@@Megabattie Thanks for the additional context! Maybe that place should have been made into a park instead then. Considering how much demand there is for housing in inner city areas though, I can see how this happened instead
Nah, it was one tree; they designed the buildings around the tree being a given fixture.
The council isn't the faintest bit reasonable about removing trees, despite the fact that this tree is the wrong tree for the location. It was never the right tree. Someone probably had it in a little planter 40 years ago and now it's screwing up all the pipes and pavement in the area with its growing roots and need for more water.
My sister did some renovation/extensions to the house (given her boys were still living with them and wanted a social life independent of their parents' supervision); they inherited a Sydney Blue Gum in their backyard; the previous owner planted it in the corner of 4 backyards and the neighbours didn't object (silly them) at the time.
The tree is still considered to be a juvenile and it's 30 metres high, dropping branches onto their house and damaging the roof, and the leaves clog up the gutters.
The tree had to be seen by an arborist ($500), for a report (the tree has another 50 years growth in it), and for the renovation they had to have a fence around the tree and no heavy machinery was allowed in the backyard in case the roots got crushed.
If the tree falls on the house the council can't be held responsible, even if the arborist says there's a danger of it falling in high winds and even if it is ruining the foundations of the house and the roots getting into the pipes. If the tree is damaged during the renovations, they are fined. If the tree dies, they will be fined. If they chop it down, they're fined.
The arborist then has to come back and check the tree's OK at the end (another $500).
That tree held up the renovations for about 6 months because nobody could agree about it, and the "one form fits every situation" council forms stated that 2 trees had to be planted for any damage to the extremely unsuitable for suburbia Blue Gum in the situation where 3 other neighbours are also affected by this tree.
Don't get me wrong - I love the tree, but it's not a tree for a backyard, and they can't do anything about it, even if it becomes dangerous.
❤
Was this the same balcony you rescued from before? At least he's shouting at you which is a good sign! My prayers are with him, I hope he recovers quickly ❤
Yes, 2 rescues in 3 days on the same balcony.
@@Megabattie oh dear! We used to get birds flying into mine and my neighbours windows after they'd got drunk on the big cherry tree in the front, they tried to fly between the houses and confused the windows for sky, so we both decided to hang tinsel accross the windows at that time of year, it help stop them going the wrong way. Maybe OP could so the same, sometimes they see reflections as open sky. I hope this little man is going to be OK. Thanks Meg ❤️
I just realised I'd put refused instead of rescued, bloody autocorrect, I've changed it now 😑 🙄 😅
autocarrot has a lot to answer for
They will only see dark windows at night; remember these bats are out at night, squabbling in the dark.
cranky..
I apologise for laughing at your fanged tube
Why not? I laugh all the time; if I really got upset by it I'd bandage every tube every time. It entertains me though. I take my entertainment where I find it.
😀
che Bello!!!👍👌👏un pò "stronzettino" a mordere🦇💐
I think youtube is cutting your videos short for Canada..I listened to this one twice to see if you said his name but it wasn't on it at all and I saw your fans calling him Ficus and wondered if I had missed it.
Hi AnnRae
How long is your version of this video?
I don't know if they're cutting the length or it's just that I don't always name them till the name suggests itself to me; I think I took a while to name this boy; it may be that I had him in care for 24-48 hours before I decided on a name; it may be that I thought he would probably die overnight and was at a loss for a survivor name.
My version of the video which I uploaded was 4:30. 4 minutes 30 seconds
The name Ficus was in the title, so that's why they're calling him Ficus.
When you say he is "squidgy" - what does that refer to?
Hi Anna
I created the word to describe how a batty isn't all that well - they don't have big lustrous eyes, they're kind of squinty, they look dehydrated or in pain; I consider "squidgy" to be a technical term encompassing whatever I want it to encompass. It's when they just aren't right and I don't know exactly how wrong they are and where they're wrong.
I also apply it to myself - because it's such a good and useful word. For instance, I have a kidney stone at the moment and I'm waiting for the surgeon to smash it to smithereens but that can't happen for another 2 weeks, and then I got an infection, so this week I've been quite squidgy.
I hope this explains it all.
@@Megabattie It can mean whatever you want it to mean. But "soft and wet and changing shape easily when pressed" is exactly the meaning of squidgy and it sounds like how you describe yourself right now. I hope you'll get well soon and feel firm again.
Incidentally. Squidgy-gate was the tabloid name given to a British scandal over taped telephone calls between Princess Diana and her lover, in which her pet-name was apparently Squidgy.
@@MegabattieUniversity of Georgia veterinary school developed the acronym "ADR" that's now widely used. It's for "ain't doing right", kind of a southern thing.
@@MegabattieI hope they get you sorted soon it can be really painful.
Yes I remember about Squidgy-gate, Anna.
