Baby bat first days in care: Convolvulus Crash, Mary Poppins & Maggie

- Maggie feeds and plays with Convo Crash and Mary Poppins.
Both these babies are newly in care, and both are very skinny; neither pup is holding their body temperature well, though Convo should definitely be thermoregulating by now. I chatted with our fave vet Adrian, who suggested they both might have heard injuries which may knock their temperature regulation system out of whack for a while. I thought Convo might have been becoming septic, which can also lower body temperature, but he wasn't sick enough or deteriorating.
Over the last few days with all the skinny babies coming into care, I've come to the conclusion that they're all too skinny to be able to thermoregulate well, and will improve with nutrition and glucose (this seems to be working).
We also have the delights of poo sampling; there's another study being done into antibiotic resistance in the babies who have just come into care, so we're doing the poo specimen thing again; of course, Maggie turns it into a total farce with clamping her legs together (just watch the video) and waving swab sticks around. What would feeding baby batties be without a Maggie to add to the entertainment?
Convo should be going to a carer today to buddy with Fuzzy Navel, and Mary Poppins will be parked with Seamorn until I find her a home.
(Mary Poppins was rescued from the Rotunda near the Mary Poppins Statue in the park; what else could I call her?)
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

I agree with you completely, such loving care, and Meg is always up on whatever concerns the bat population is facing. The bats are fortunate that Meg brought her nursing knowledge and skills out of the hospital and to the bats, who really need her.🖤🇨🇦
I hope Convo will warm up so he feels better. Mary Poppins really is very sweet and a pretty girl. Yes Maggie does seem to have a comedic way around the babies.
It doesn’t hurt that this feeding always coincides with aperitif time for the dauntless M&M. I do hope Convolvulus didn’t get too hard a peck from the raven, and recovers his thermoregulation abilities quickly. I love how Marry Poppins dropped her foot on cue every time Maggie sang that line.🖤🇨🇦
They are just so cute. I don't know why watching these videos makes me teary, but they do. Maybe it's partly that the carers are so caring...and funny...and the accents. 😅

I have micro bats living in my carriage house, and as soon as it gets warm enough I watch them fly out every dusk, and see them swooping around catching and eating insects around the porch light. I’m always sad when it gets too cold and they retire for the winter…but they are back at it every Spring with new babies. There must be a colony near you.🖤🇨🇦

Just what I needed, an evening with the M&M show and the cutest pair of pups ever. Mary Poppins and Convolvulus Crash both look adorable with their dinner and full bellies. He looks hilarious with that dummy giving him a big toothy grin. I hope he gets to being warmer and didn’t get too badly hurt by the Raven and his fall.🥂🖤🇨🇦
He seems to have avoided raven pecks but he has a few wing punctures; but he also still won't hold his body heat; he's not sick, just very quiet and cool to touch rather than toasty, and it is so hot here at the moment (over 110ºF here today). I had him in a fluffy wrap in the dressing gown pocket because the ambient temperature was higher than the incubator temperature, yet still he wasn't toasty warm.
I, on the other hand, was mostly naked with 2 wet towels and 2 fans attempting to deal with the furnace of my life.
He looks like his belly fur is in, and those temps are crazy this early in the season. Is his internal temp also low? He didn’t seem to be shivering. Does thermoregulation work autonomously, or does he have to start it? Glad the Raven didn’t crack his skull, and he doesn’t appear to be in pain. Hoping it is one of those mysteries that just resolve themselves. I hope you are staying hydrated and keeping your electrolytes in balance.🖤🇨🇦
He is not toasty when the other babies have warm extremities, he doesn't. Even today he didn't get that lovely warm limp feeling.
It doesn't help that he pees all over himself frequently.
@@Megabattie Well, at least he IS peeing. It is really odd though, that when the others his age get warm and relaxed, he doesn’t. It didn’t sound like Adrian was overly concerned though. I wonder if his thyroid is off kilter.🖤🇨🇦
He's still cool to touch in the extremities, and so is Mary Poppins, and one of the others, I forget whom.
I didn't take his internal temperature, so I don't know; I think it's just a skinniness thing. They automatically start thermoregulating around the time they grow belly fur.

He's doing OK but just not warming up to toasty, which, considering it's around 110ºF here, is surprising.
I'm not dealing with it all all (2 fans and 2 wet dripping towels for their evaporative services), but he's just fine, pissing all over himself and feeling cool to the touch.
@@Megabattie Well, as long as the plumbing is working both ways, he has an appetite, and isn’t showing signs of distress…there isn’t much to do but wait and watch. You could do some full body immersion between resetting the towels, and keep a spray bottle of cold mint tea at hand to spritz yourself. I hope this isn’t a predictor for the nature of the Summer ahead.🖤🇨🇦

Sad all the babies are so little. Maybe with time they will grow big and strong. They are so cute.
I think the wild Mumbats appreciate their smallness, since they must carry them in flight until they are big enough to be left in the colony and can regulate their temperatures on their own. They grow pretty quickly, and have a wingspread as long as your arm by the time they are juveniles…for mature adults it can get as wide as an average human’s height.🖤🇨🇦

Maggie's right of course - a dash of white wine in a glass of water is a very pissy drink! But her restraint while in charge of infant bats, is admirable.
Had to laugh at Maggie's 'ABBA' story. The super-group's hit song, 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight'), is thankfully a distant memory for me.
With the wisdom of several decades, what I mostly recall of such youthful, late night indiscretions is bad sex, a male hogging my duvet (and on the most unpleasant occasions), farting fit to bust so I had to flee my own bedroom and sleep on the living room sofa.
And the following morning, I invariably had a battle on my hands to get the lousy lover/bedfellow out of my apartment before lunchtime! NOT sexy - or remotely romantic!
Looking back today as a happily single woman, I recognise my favourite bedtime companion of all time was my gorgeous, and now sadly departed dog, sweet Dolly.
A woman who finds the right pet, never, ever needs to live with a man!
I prefer not to dwell on the less savoury aspects of my past, which were fortunately few.
I do the world a public service and live alone and everyone is happier.

You wouldn’t be alone in that desire Marisasaera…it is just so far away, and vaccinations and training before we could…but it could be managed to care and feed baby bats after rescue. One of Mag’s channel regulars got a spot volunteering at the Tolga Bat Hospital for a set period of time, and I think she is going to love it.🖤🇨🇦

Not sure what an appropriate bribe might be…who can guess what they want badly enough to make a deal for. Hi Dazy, I don't take name suggestions from viewers; that is the way to madness. I did it once for a bit but people made all the comments varying degrees of demands to name various babies or batties coming into care; they wanted updates then on how THEIR batty was doing, and if it died, they wanted to name a replacement bat. So I stopped doing it, retained my sanity and I name all the batties now. I actually like naming the bats and think I come up with awesome and memorable names.

I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.

Are there different antibiotic options for bubs with resistance? Does test show which ones won't work? You've awoken the long retired nurse in me. They are so beautiful, sorry they've lost mums but know they will thrive and grow with wingless mums
We don't know that the bat is resistant; the whole issue is being studied.
