Assessing a newly rescued flying-fox: this is Mr Burton

- Mr Burton was seen on the road, shepherded off by a lovely MOP who then called for rescue. Fortunately a rescuer lived close by and was able to rescue him promptly, bringing him to me for assessment and overnight care. By the time she arrived, Burt was busy trying go climb, a tree, but since he was so concussed he was unable to get more than a few feet up before falling.
I had my doubts as to his survival, given his quite neurological jerky spasmodic movements, but to my surprise he was still alive the next morning and has gone back to the rescuer for further care.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

Poor baby, that cry, breaks my heart. The way he pulks his wings and blanket over his head 🥺🥺🥺 I hope he pulls through. ❤❤❤
They always look so inconsolable when they cry so much and chomp on the blanket, I hope he makes it, he's having a bad day today
He's a sweet old bat. I hope his improvement continues
he's doing ok, just slightly squidgy
Thank you for all you do!
So much drama! One would think he'd be a wee bit more cooperative after breakfast in bed. Thank you to the rescuer and Meg for (hopefully) helping him get well.
Mr. Burton is almost toothless and very cranky. I'm hesitant to enjoy the crankiness when it's a head injury because you don't know how it will turn out. I really hope Mr. Burton pulls through to live on and lose his fangs. Thanks Meg, for the excellent care you show the bats.
Oh the poor darling, so stressed. Hope he's good now.🍁🦇🇨🇦
I hope recovers and heals. Thankyou Meg and the other rescuer.
Re-watching your amazing care and treatment of handsome Mr. Burton.🩶🦇💓 Keeping positive prayers he will be a survivor, he looked so much better at the end of this video.Thank you Meg!🥰
Oh Mr. Burton , please let the magnificent Megs take good care of you ! No bitey Meg . You can be as cranky as you want but no bite magnificent Meg ! Keep fighting to get well flying fur puppy ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He didn't bite me, so all good. I didn't think he would but it wasn't for want of trying through the cloth. He maintained the rage for his entire time in care with me.
Wow poor fellow. I never realized how loud they can be
Mr. Burton he is a very handsome handful! I hope he makes a full recovery. I love watching them drink apple juice too.
HUGE THANKS to MOP👍💕 who cared, Rescuer nearby👍💕 and you Meg are amazing, HUGE RESPECT for ALL you did for handsome Mr. Burton!👍💕🩶🦇🤗💓 You are left with a fanged glucose tube. Did you say he's an older gent? Will re-watch.🥰
Yes, he's older.
Oh those cries are heartbreaking. 😢. You can just tell is really hurting, hope he makes a full recovery. ❤️🦇
He's still a bit squidgy but alive and kind of getting there.
What a loud mouth feisty little fellow, I hope he will fully recover.
It seems like he's still a bit squidgy but is getting there.
It’s heartbreaking when the batties scream like that!❤️🦇🇨🇦
Jelly everywhere but where you want it. It is so sad to hear him screaming like that.
He's a fighter. Good boy.
Poor baby. I had to turn the sound down. I hope he heals completely and has a full and joyful life.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Poor fellow had a huge headache 😂I see on day two he was much happeir about his getting a drink
that adorable lil face peeking over the blanket asking for more juice... made me aww out loud lol
Thank you Meg for all you and the rest of the Batty rescuers do. ( i mean batty in a nice way of course) I sent Tolga a donation today which makes me happy and now I am MEEPING at the cat who is not impressed. J.L., R.N.
LOL thank John

After you got him home I bet he was like "wait a moment, I think I heard about you around the canopies, you're the sweet bat lady that saves us when we're hurt!"
💝🦇💝🦇💝🦇💝 good luck darlin girl!!!
It's a boy, 🙂
I hope dear Mr. Burton pulls through alright. 🤞❤️🦇❤
The crying is just heartbreaking, you can feel how much pain is there. Praying for his recovery 💞🦇
He's doing mostly fine; not brilliantly, but 10 days later he's self feeding and just a bit squidgy
@@Megabattie I'm so glad he is doing fine, sending positive vibes from California 😊
I didn't know bats could make that noise! Poor guy. I hope he feels better soon.
❤❤❤🎉
Sorry....I meant boy!!!💙💙💙
🦇❤🙏
😀
Wow, he has quite the screech on him. He must have been in so much pain, plus being confused.
That screech would make me a little unsure.
He was more cranky than hurt though he would have had a bit of a headache.
Is he the loudest so far? Wow! 😢
No Joan, he's about average in annoyed loudness. Some don't bother yelling but all can yell loudly if they want to.
Why are the eyes so watery?
If a bat hits their head, often the blink reflex is reduced or absent; their eyes either dry out with th black of blinking, causing superficial to deep ulcerations (depending on how long it goes on for), or if there is a bit of grit in their eyes, their eyes work overtime to get rid of it, weeping to wash it out.
Dry eyes and wet eyes are a sign of a head injury with a reduced blink reflex, or a bit of grit or dirt in their eyes.
Simply no reasoning with the head injured 😂 he was quite vocal. So glad he's come around.
I totally understand his outrage at the tube being white. Out of all the colors it could have, why did it have to be white?
Also, what's with the monopoly game we see ? Whose is it? I love that game! 🙂
I picked up the Monopoly game on the side of the road; always good for family games night.
So he screamed for 5 minutes and 45 seconds before pain medicine 💉??? Should you give him something for pain first before assessment and IV???🤬
Assessment first, pain relief thereafter; pain relief can affect how they present.
