Rescuing a flying-fox in a tree for 2 days: this is Donnikens

  • Donnikens is a subadult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was noticed by some children when he was hanging out in a tree for 2 days in a primary school playground.
    The call came describing his height as 6 feet, however it was closer to 6 metres, which is fine because I had all my rescue poles in Froggie McB;
    it was a fairly simple pole rescue though, since he wasn't trying to get away or struggle.
    I called him Donnikens for his location; Doncaster Ave and Kensington.
    His condition deteriorated rapidly after the adrenaline rush of rescue wore off; he died a few hours after I got him home.
    RIP Donnikens
    Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospital.org/donate/
    Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
    If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
    IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
    The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

    Donnikens sounds like a sweet pet name you'd call someone named Donnie or Donna. Although he was in the tree for two days, you helped him go peacefully and lovingly in his last hours. Sorry Meg.

    Donnikens was a handsome lad with great colouring.. so sad he didn’t make it, but great to see people caring about him. Froggy McB is looking fabulous. Poor boy was awfully dehydrated and out of it. I’m glad you were there for him…fly free sweet boy.🌹🖤🇨🇦

    Thanks for also sharing the sad news stories. Getting past the "what did I do wrong" anguish is hard as a newbie, even though logically I know the odds are always stacked against a wild animal that is sick or injured enough to capture. It's helpful to be reminded that expert care still can't produce miracles all the time. Fly high little man.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      They live or die, according to what happened before they get rescued; that determines if it's possible for them to survive.
      Their care thereafter determines whether or not you can keep them alive for long enough for them to heal, if it's possible.

      Yes, it's awesome that people, even children, notice the batties in trouble.

    You are amazing negabattie I'd be crying over every loss. You do such a good job of saving those that can be saved and giving the ones that don't make it dignity, peace, and comfort.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If I cried over every loss I'd be useless as a rescuer/carer.
      I do my best, I name them, and move on.

      thanks, but I"m not special, I just have a pragmatic brain which can cope with this; I do my best, I name them, I remember them, and I move them along.

    • @RoxanneSharbono-mb8ol
      @RoxanneSharbono-mb8ol 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Megabattie we will have to agree to disagree on whether your pragmatism makes you amazing.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It doesn't make me amazing, it's just how my brain is wired. If anything, I have a thick skin and it takes a lot to get through it. I see the bats in distress and care about them, but it doesn't hurt me unless it's really ghastly.

    Excellent respectful rescue as always. I liked how you measured the height by counting the extension tubes 🙂 I got really excited by finally learning how to correctly tie up the cord of the scissors! And just before the grand finale… a cliffhanger… could you please show it the next time you use it?

    Poor Donnikens! When the vid description mentioned 2 days, it didn't sound like a positive outcome. So "location challenged" can morph into "measurement challenged", eh. Thanks to the MOP for calling, and thank you for trying.

    I was showing my boyfriend your videos and educating him about the bats and he was confused about their red necks . I tried googling if they have a specific reaspn for having their red neck fluff, but couldnt see anything about it. Any chance youd know ? Or are they just like that for no evolutionary purposes ?

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't know. Why are birds different colours? Maybe it evolved as an identity for different species.
