Rescuing a flying-fox in a car grille this is Fin

  • This is an interesting one; when I got a call for a flying-fox stuck behind a car grille (as you do), I immediately thought - awesome I love to do interesting rescues.
So this batty hit a car driving along, and the MOP (lovely lady) thought it was a bird who just glanced off the car.
When she got home she found the little guy half into the grille and helped him get inside because he was betwixt and between, and called for help.
Megabattie help arrived and delivered LOL!!!
We have elements of Maggie who gifted me the sun lounge pad that very arvo (which is Aussie for afternoon) which I used for cushioning the geriatric body from the resistance of the road while I lay there trying to wrestle the batty from its secure repository inside the grille.
You'll be happy to to learn he is OK (without being brilliant) after 24 hours in care.

I almost cried because I thought of all the situation animals get themselves into and most people just ignore it. Let them die then deal with the corpse. Thank you MOP for calling for help.. And ever thankful for the lovely Meg who will go above and beyond and put up with a grumpy in order to rescue them.

1:31 for future reference this upper plastic cover should come off easily - it will be fastened with the plastic push rivets you see on the top surface. They are either unscrewed (If they have a slot) or pried up with a strong fingernail or a knife blade. The rivets are available at low cost if they get broken.
The damage to the grill can be repaired by a plastic welder if the MOP finds one

Where were you on Thursday night then? Or was it Wednesday night? I forget.
The grille looks just fine - I put it back into place.
The MOPs partner said he was a mechanic and the thing was a module and would have to be disassembled to get the bat out, or cut.
Not having any particular experience with this I chose to just commit delicate mayhem (that sounds like an oxymoron, which is right down my psyche street) and get my batty.

@@Megabattie In a plane somewhere ,I forget. Or at home in front of the fire. (Depending which day it was)

A bat so determined to find a place on the front of a car probably belongs to Bruce Wayne. Which means... "he" will be coming for that bat, soon.
On a more serious note (as if there could be a less serious note) those grills are held in place by 2 or 4 simple clips. You might stop by a garage and see if one of the mechanics will spare a moment to show you how to pop a grill out and put it back. That way you get the bat out quicker with less chance of injury, and you don't damage the car. It's a win-win.
Of course, it doesn't matter, if "he" comes for you...

OMG, Finn was so incredibly lucky! Animals versus vehicles usually have tragic outcomes. I think some part of him was already wedged in the underside of the grille, lifting the borrow edge a bit so he could squirm through. Brilliant rescue in such a tight place! Our dog once flushed a rabbit who tried to escape through a chain link fence. The rabbit's hindquarters didn't go through, so poor thing is stuck halfway and screaming. The dog wasn't nipping, just snuffling at rabbit butt - lol. But I couldn't get the rabbit free and (ashamed to say) got a bit hysterical. The terror in those rabbit screams was breaking my heart. Husband saved the day after he heard the ruckus and brought out his bolt cutters. Snip snip, chain links were cut back and rabbit ran off. It wasn't our fence, btw, but neighbor was as gracious as your MOP regarding the damage.

I have to say, that was a weird spot to find a Flying-Fox. He is very fortunate to have managed to hit a car and come away without injury. He has a good selection of salty language, which he reserved for the moment you laid hands on his person.
He was watching very closely as you were snipping the grill, I was surprised how close he was…right until you reached in, he wasn’t going to be too helpful. Good thing Maggie found that pad for you to lay on…it was very handy. Lovely MOP, and clearly interested in him.
I’m guessing the big Teddy is destined to become a kick toy for the Roos…I’m sure the Grizzly is past repair by now. I’m glad he is doing well in care, and will no doubt perk up before long in the company of a buddy or two. We love survivors, and Fin looks set to be one…Yay!🥂🖤🇨🇦

Yes, Teddy is for the roos or for Mandi - whomever wants it.
The sun lounge pad was being thrown away so I decided to take it for recycling to under the airer, and I just couldn't be bothered unpacking my car when I got home, so it was still in there with puppy piddle pads and towels and nappies and vet wrap and nappy liners and all sorts of stuff. And a fluoro yellow teddy who will be given liposuction and some further surgery to make it limp and soft.

They go to lay their kittens too
The lotter I rescued and kept were just born under a car in a garage . If the people had driven off to work like they were about they'd had been crushed. It'd quite common. :(

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  ปีที่แล้ว

He flew into the car obliquely when the MOP was driving.
I think he snagged the mesh in passing. There was a bit of a fracture in the grille so he forced his head and shoulders in then couldn't get out.
The MOPs separated it a bit so he went right in.

The boys have a specific odour but I can't describe it; it's fairly bitter but I don't find it particularly offensive.
The girls are less stinky, and the babies (the Grey babies) smell sweet and like vanilla, baby powder and pink musk candy.
Blacks and Greys and Speccies and Little Reds all smell different. People say the Little Reds smell like curry; I think Blacks smell like burnt fruit salad (not that I've ever burnt fruit salad, but they smell fruity like fruit salad with an acrid burnt overlay of aroma). Speccies have their own smell and I can't describe it.
