Rescuing a flying-fox stranded on a balcony; this is Foveaux

- Foveaux is a juvenile female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who crash landed on a balcony courtyard area; as with most inner city developments, the desire for outside living space and light directs the design, leading to balconies, atria, light wells and courtyards which can entrap unwary and inexperienced batties. There are multiple roof levels all funnelling into a dead end 3 storeys high which a bat wouldn't have been able to summit in the space available.
Foveaux is only 16-17 weeks old with little experience in inner city hazards. She has been so passive I was thinking she may have been hand raised, however she has no band or microchip and all our releases are chipped now.
She's not a skinny girl and looks quite well fleshed so she's been doing well with her mumbat and during her first ventures into the wild.
She's at the paralysed with fear stage of care, unwilling to do anything except looking harmless; she has to have her mouth opened to give her a drink; she stubbornly refuses to open her mouth herself but quite likes the juice when it's syringed in.
I don't know how she's going to go but I do have hopes for her survival; let's see how she goes overnight; I'll take her off to Adrian in the morning if he's available, so she can have an X-ray to check her collarbones and shoulders.
I called her Foveaux for the street name; Foveaux apparently means direct vision (I could be wrong) and is a medical term.
Hang in there sweetie.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
tolgabathospital.org/donate/
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

The caring and loving way you wrapped that baby with brought tears of joy to my eyes ❤ thank you for rescuing and devoting your time to those wonderful beings!
Your amazing Meg, what a heart, they are the most beautiful creature's. People over in Australia must be very aware of the flying foxes plight because you get a lot of call outs. It will be to late for nature and animals before we stop building like this without consideration for the natural world. Sending you love Meg ❤ and the little girl
In NSW there is a state organisation which is synonymous with wildlife rescue; there are also local groups licensed for local and specific areas. They only licence 2 groups per area and usually WIRES the state organisation is one of them.
The Sydney Yuppies are quite au fait with calling wildlife rescue for any animal in trouble so there are a lot of calls. Also, with bats, people are generally scared of them and it's not like they can just bundle them up in a towel and throw it into the air and hope that it flies.
Modern architecture, I really DETEST it!!🤬 I am keeping positive prayers she will go on to be a Survivor!🩶🦇🤗💕 Thank you so much Meg for her rescue💕 Glad rescue was called.👍
❤❤❤❤😢❤🦇🦇🦇🦇
For functionality for humans I love modern architecture, but it hasn't been designed (and won't every be, I suspect) to be wildlife friendly.
Yep, its ugly
@@Megabattie I couldn't enjoy it knowing it traps Animals. I never gave it a second thought before watching your rescues of so many Bats trapped by it.🥺🦇💓
I don’t like it either. It’s so sterile looking.
Can't believe those condos and she's a new flyer. She'll recover, get her pilot's license, and meet a nice fellow batman.
Thanks Meg for saving another life. Sharon Toronto
Thank you, Meg. I’m glad that she’s feeling better, and self feeding now. 💙
Look at those lovely eyes... lets pray she's a Survivor!!!!!
Poor girl! If you want to know how much society gives about animals and nature, just look at the houses they build. I bet the architects wouldn't know what a bat or flying fox was if it landed on their head.
Keep my fingers crossed for this well behaved, beautiful young lady ❤️🙏🏼
Thank you for all your hard work, dear rescuers! ❤️
Such a precious baby. I hope she makes it. Bless you Meg!
The juveniles are so trusting.💕👍🦇
I think it's not so much trusting, as terrified and they have no idea what they should be doing; they're fighting a massive headache and confusion and they're picked up by an ugly furless giant, and they just don't know what to do.
Awe, what a sweetie! Foveaux , you are in great hands! Hope you make it through!
Good luck darlin!!! Please be a survivor!!!💜🦇💜🦇💜🦇💜
Such a beautiful, easy-going girl! Fingers crossed for a wonderful future! 🤞
Beautiful baby, and we're off to the sort out! Hang on to Meg, little one. She has this ride you are on all under control, and hopefully will deliver you back to your moms' front door.
She's so passive, poor girl. Hoping for no broken bones and that the quick report leads to a quick recovery.
No broken bones, and slowly recovering
@@Megabattie Most excellent! The bats aren't still having that problem where they'd start to recover then seemingly randomly deteriorate with some lung problem, are they? And, out of curiosity, what was the problem? You mentioned somewhere that it was in an old community post but YT doesn't let me scroll back more than a year or so.
@@Shadowtrot The purple polka dot lung issue (that's what I called it) was about 3 - 4 years ago and lasted 2 seasons; there was no real diagnosis of the issue, other than the babies and juvies also had soft bones. It seemed that there was an immune deficiency which compromised the bats making them susceptible to a common bacteria found around and about which normally humans don't have a problem with, except if they're compromised; immune compromised humans in intensive care can succumb to this bacteria, pseudomonas. The bats seemed to have a rapid infection process leading to death within 24 hours.
So nice to see that she was perking up a bit. Hopefully that’s a good sign
It is indeed
Very guiet gal, here's hoping for survival 🙏 🍁🦇🇨🇦
I adore how you take time to educate people about bats. It took my sweet Mother about five minutes to go from fearful, detestable creatures to awww, the baby has a pacifier.
We talked much through the pandemic of the misinformation and ignorance of some people who were unable to open their minds and/or do their own research and make their own conclusions. Rather than latching on to conspiracy theories.
I like to think she is in the stars, not only still watching over me. But, watching over the vulnerable too.
Fingers crossed Meg.
Your mother sounds like an amazing lady; i hope she's in the stars watching over you.
This little girl touched my heart, she was so quiet and passive. I sensed she knew you were mothering her pretty quickly, and went with it. Please God she'll recover, she's in my prayers.
Great work as always Meg. Much love from the UK. XXX
She's doing just fine; I think I'll have footage of her further in care in the next few days (got sidetracked with Linti)
@@Megabattie You're so busy Meg, huge respect to you for your invaluable work for these precious animals. My God they need you in their corner.
I'm absolutely thrilled to hear she's a survivor. Looking forward to the video, when you have time! X
I hope Foveaux does better tomorrow (today now for you). She looks like such a sweetie. ❤
She's doing fine; hanging out and self feeding in the hospital aviary now
Good little bat. Hope she does well. ❤🦇
The fovea is a small depression at the center of the retina and thus the center of view, that provides the sharpest vision.
Foveaux Strait are the waters between Stewart Is and The South Island of NZ
"The sealing brig Pegasus, commanded by Eber Bunker, ran aground in the strait in 1809, and in the report on this in the Sydney Gazette, the strait was called Foveaux Strait, after Joseph Foveaux, Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales "
Yes, I researched that as well.
I like the idea that I called her Direct Vision Clear Vision when she was trapped by some architecture lacking in clear vision
These are lovely humans and will make sure you are back in the wild 100%
She's hanging out in the aviary now and self feeding, which is good
Sweet little Foveaux. I hope she recovers. 💕🦇
She is recovering well now
Hi Foveaux I sure hope she does well. So glad that somebody called about her. It just makes me sad to think of all the ones that get ignored and nobody calls about or they just walked by 😢 there are alot of caring MOP and thank goodness for them. Foveaux please get well enough to be released 💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕
She looked at you so trustingly!!🥰❤️🦇🇨🇦
Good luck to this bat!
Poor little poppet. Hope she makes a full recovery!
She's doing well; I haven't managed to edit all the footage I have of her yet during her time in care.
Such a sweet little one. I am keeping my fingers crossed for her.
Wonderful seeing her perk up and start reacting to the glucose, even if just a little. She was frighteningly still and passive when she was first picked up. No obvious injuries, so that's good to see. Fear, exhaustion and probably a little bump on the head shouldn't keep her down for long.
She is so quiet no cranky pants, hope she does well ….very sweet batty 💞🦇
She's taking her time about feeling better
Beautiful little girl, I hope she recovers poor thing ❤
SHe's doing a lot better now
@Megabattie aw I'm so glad to hear it. Thank you, Meg and all the batty team ❤️
Get better sweetie.
A cutie
She looks so cute wrapped up on teddy ❤
Hoping the best for the bat 🦇.
She's recovering now and is self feeding
@@Megabattie yays glad to hear
Id bet you are feeling maternal with this one Meg😊 such a beauty
She's with another carer now; it was better for her that way; I moved her along on day 3 or 4
She's beautiful! KDD Lamp will be off to its new owner! 😇😎❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️
👍😇🤗💓
Best wishes for this precious little one.
She is so cute😍🦇🥰
You are amazing
Bless her heart...hoping she recovers soon ❤❤❤xxx
Sh' s a vey good girl! I hope she' s doing well now!
So sweet.
Oh, I hope she makes it! A beautiful little survivor would be welcome. These courtyard are beautiful but so awful for the bats. At least the MOP called so Foveaux has a chance. ♥
She's doing well
@@Megabattie 💞
Meg is there a part 2 video on Jiggzi? The one who was caught up in fishing lure. U did a wonderful job removing it especially around her eye. 😊

You can usually find any subsequent videos by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/name of bat. If nothing comes up then there is no further video; you can always ask me though
I hope the sweet baby survives this misadventure.
She's doing well 4 days later
@@Megabattie I'll have to look for the update videos. Thanks for your miracle work.
@@soniafrontera6040 I'll probably have them edited and one up tomorrow
just noticed you covered the fang holes on your tube with tape, that gave me a smile
It's not the first time I've had to do that.
@@Megabattie it's the first time I notice. Have a good night!
they fang my tube all the time and I have to mend it a lot; sometimes I bandage the tube before they fang it; sometimes I dip it in latex to protect the top of the tube.
I'm fairly random about it.
Ms. Megabattie, has there ever been any thought to encourage affixing netting of some sort along the walls of these interior traps. That would possible provide a way for the batties to climb out. I realize, though, that most bat-ties have hit their heads. Could a thin mesh be affixed over opening to discourage bats getting trapped? Just a thought from the other side of the world….😊😊😊
It's trickier than just putting up mesh.
Mesh catches all sorts of airborne debris so there would have to be a way to clean it, and people don't want to see netting in their sight lines.
Also, these are strata plans so all the residents have to agree to it.
It's tricky.
Better design at the start might help.
Content being swaddled, lucky girl that Megabattie was on your case.
I first thought that was a bat 🦇 back massager.
LOL
How did the X-rays turn out? I fear she's concussed.
More vid of Foveaux coming up tomorrow if I get an afternoon of work done.
She's fine
😀
How is Foveaux? It’s been 2 days now is she ok? Sweet little girl ❤
Foveaux is doing fine; I posted an update vid of her today and if I have time to edit the next in the series there will be one tomorrow.
Humans are responsible for the injuries and deaths of many wildlife 😢. From power lines, fast moving vehicles, poorly designed buildings, barbed wire fences, razor wire, and diseases. Hopefully this one will be able to survive. Poor little love. 💕🦇🥺🤕
She's doing fine now
@@Megabattie good to know. Appreciate all of your hard work.
😍🦇🦇🦇🦇😍

How big is the colony in the park?
I don't know the recent numbers; up to 25K
