I chose the 44 magnum and use my model 329PD custom quad ported by Mag-Na-Port with a 500 S&W Hogue recoil absorbing padded rubber grip on it.

Now compare the 357 to your vaunted 10mm.
I would lean towards.357 but 10mm out of anything over 6” would dominate.
@@mikerobinson8734 Barrel lengths being the same the 357 has 10% more energy using silhouette loads., of course then one would be limited to using Ruger or Dan Wesson . The best bear defense gun is the one that works best for whomever is carrying it.this debate has been going on since the 60s.
@@mausermongerkoziczkowski8104 I would have to strongly disagree with that 10% statement. The 2 caliber’s are just about equal in terms of FPE.
The best 10mm loads can achieve over 900ft lbs. I’ve chrono’d these results myself.
Let’s say .357 magnum was 10% more energy than 10mm (which it’s not) same barrel length the 10mm can load up to 230 grains of lead and carry much more momentum than any .357 load out there. Momentum is what matters , that’s what makes it effective against large critters like Grizzly bear.
This debate has not been going on since the 60’s. The 10mm auto cartridge was introduced in 1983. Your entire comment is wrong.
@@mikerobinson8734 Read the back of the Buffalo bore ammo boxes. I am personally getting 1230 fps with my 190 gr hard cast out of a six four inch barrel while not at maximum charge weight. My wife's 6 inch barrel is getting 1300. I tested some grizzly ammo and was getting 1400 out of the same 4 inch barrel over the same chrono.

@@mausermongerkoziczkowski8104 Not sure what your argument here is. I’m referring to what you said earlier that the .357 magnum has 10% more muzzle energy than a 10mm out of the same length barrels. That’s simply not true. I don’t know of any .357 magnum load that touches 900ft lbs of muzzle energy. I’m not talking about the back of the box of your ammo, I’m talking about the capability of the cartridge.
10mm 155grn @ 1650 out of a 6” barrel delivers 936ft lbs of energy. There is no debate about what’s a better bear cartridge, your statement about .357 mag is false, that’s all I’m addressing. Plenty of data out there that supports this.
If you look at the heavier loads like 200 grain they will be in the 700ftlbs range but energy isn’t everything, the amount of momentum that load delivers is greater than a 180 grain .357 magnum if comparing heavy for caliber loads.
Momentum is what brings large bruins down, and to have 16 rounds on tap makes it far superior than 6.
The Taylor knockout formula mass/velocity/caliber diameter scores the 10mm above.357 mag in almost every bullet weight.
Joe Neva who taught the CCW class in Fairbanks carried the 357.
You should freeze every other water bottle and see how the slugs expand.

I wouldn’t choose .357 for a bear defense, 44mag all day. That’s what it was designed for.
.357 all day for man or even deer.
But that decision is what I’d prefer.

If someone can shoot the 2 guns equally well, the 44 is better. If they struggle with the 44 then the 357 may be the best option
41 is between the 44 and 357.
The .41 Magnum (.410) is much closer to .44 Magnum (.429) than .357 Magnum..in size and power. With a handload of the right mix of bullet weight/powder charge, I'd wager that .44 Magnum won't penetrate much (if any) further than a .41 Magnum ...when using the same bullet weight in each .
Of course, heavier bullets are available for the .44 Magnum, so the potential is there for more from that caliber....but .41 can do very well against it.

I’ve only shot a 44 mag revolver and desert eagle at the range many yrs ago they were my buddy’s , I had three hand gun has as a civilian at the time a 645 smith 45 ACP , colt gold cup, and a generation 1 glock 20 in 10 mm bought that in about 93-94 I think these were the good old days , but I have a encore carbine one of the barrels is 44 mag with a 30 cm barrel it’s a beast I use it in woodland deer stalking and wild boar , I use my reloads 240 grn xtp and 265 grn interlock FP love the 44 mag
