This is one of the oldest Russian bear hunting bullets with 12 gauge smoothbore guns. Its inventor was the governor of the Tver province of Tsarist Russia, Prince Shirinsky-Shikhmatov. Few people will remember him as an official, but as a bear hunter and the author of the bullet of the same name, he remained in Russian history for a long time.

Awsome job loading those slugs. The fragment that was just behind the gel block at the end of the video transferred 100% of its enery to the gel, and then hung in space until gravity made it drop straight down. Very impressive, indeed.
Based just on what I saw it do to that pork shoulder, I would definitely feel confident that this is a one shot stop on any intruder you get in your home. It will require some significant clean up afterwards however.

The damage this slug did to the pork shoulder has me picturing it stopping a charging moose in its tracks. Jeff suggested it would be a good home defense round. Probably so, if your home is ever invaded by a bear or an alligator or any hoofed critter.
These were loaded perfectly.... even though the pieces did exit the back of the gel block, there wasn't really any energy wasted and they were absolutely devastating. If I were restricted to a shotgun for defense, these rounds would be at the top of my list.
Actually, these could have been bumped up quite a bit with more Longshot powder. 27 grains is well below the recommended starting point of 34 grains for Zveroboy slugs, which are basically the same projectile. I load up to 36 grains, and get some amazing velocities.
If the accuracy could be extended to 100 yards or so, I would happily use this slug for deer; the only worry I would have would be wasting meat. That pork test you guys did was freaking AMAZING!
My guess on the rifled barrel is the slug and base each engaged the rifeling at different rates. This unscrewed or partially unscrewed the fastener causing an off balance projectile and the wobbles.
how did I miss the notification? YAY! another Taofledermaus video!!! These look totally brutal! Dang that pork exploded! The gel test was a work of spinning twirling flabby art.
And on top of that on both shots on the gel block one of the fragments came to a dead stop after just barely leaving the block, left to fall onto the table.
Thanks for the video! In these inflation-y times, a lot of shooters are concerned about getting the most bang for their buck (12 ga. birdshot rounds are .50 and rising in NM right now). How about something focusing on the most cost effective slug?
Casting slugs like this in the long run would save you money.... AFTER investing in a melt pot, mold, etc. Get a few buddies together to buy that and that might help.
These cost less than $0.50 per round (provided you have the necessary reloading equipment). Range scrap lead is free. Typical factory slugs are at least $1 per round (I've seen $2 lately). I can't imagine what they'd charge for something like these.
Nice slug, the old guys showed me how to cut a # 8 birdshot into a nice slug as well. Cut through the case almost at the bottom of the shot cup and track the cut around the shell to an eighth of an inch from the start of the cut. Works great at 20 yards.
I think the shot on that pork shoulder was the most brutal thing I've ever seen. That seemed to be a pretty good indication of how it would perform against an actual threat. WOW!
Woah, now that is a crazy devastating round. The video really made me wonder more about your loading process. I looked and couldn't seem to find a full vid of yours about the loading process. Lots of times some special things you do to get some of the unique stuff to work, but not the whole process. I know there are others on the net, but frankly you give such good clear common sense explanations, I think you would do an amazing job explaining the basics and why. Any chance or other recommendations?
I know Jeff used to go into a bit more detail about his loading process, but TH-cam started demonetizing those videos so he stopped. If you look around, though, you can probably find plenty of videos about loading shotgun rounds.
That looks like it would sting a bit lol - that gummy bear 🐻 omg it didn’t know which way to go it was hit so hard ! Bet that pork is tender … if you can find any of it . Great job to the creator !! Thanks for all the fun treating you guys do. I want some of these
In the shot on the ballistics gell you can see a fragment just make it out of the end and hang in mid-air shortly, just barely made it out and hung there ...so cool!!

I thoroughly enjoy your content. Thank you for making your videos. I love the gatekeeper round. This one is pretty good but i would have to go with the gatekeeper.
I finally got around to trying out this load (using the green wad). It was surprisingly accurate at 25 yards out of my KSG. 5 shot group in 1 ragged hole. Magnetospeed claimed 1207 f/s avg.
@@taofledermaus Just this particular load. I'd tried 25.0gn Longshot and some loads using Alliant Steel but was more interested in the 5 and 6 petal versions until I saw this video. Then life issues got in the way of me doing much of anything.
@@taofledermaus I tested this load in 2: hulls. The FS12 added 90 f/s avg over the BRP-12 in a 2-3/4" hull. Accuracy was ok but not quite as good, though that could have been me. I tried my usual load with the 26 gram Shot-mini, but with the FS12 in a 2" hull, and it also added about 90 f/s, and it threw accuracy way off. I'll have to try reworking the powder charge to ~1260 f/s like my usual load.

The ballistics gel morphing in slow mo was over the top. Wish we could see that again with a dead center hit. Unreal guys, Thanks 4 posting
thanks
My guess on the rifled barrel is the slug and base each engaged the rifeling at different rates. This unscrewed or partially unscrewed the fastener causing an off balance projectile and the wobbles.
how did I miss the notification? YAY! another Taofledermaus video!!! These look totally brutal! Dang that pork exploded! The gel test was a work of spinning twirling flabby art.
Thanks! it's a rare sight when we have an actual clear block of gel!
Unreal. 2 of 3 fragments managed to escape that length of Ballistic gel! Wow!
And on top of that on both shots on the gel block one of the fragments came to a dead stop after just barely leaving the block, left to fall onto the table.
@@CATASTEROID934 I know. it's crazy that it hit that exact point of Kinetic loss.
Those large, heavy petals really changed things up. The 6 petal ones the petals tended to shoot out the side of the gel block.
@@taofledermaus Sounds like 'exit the perp radially, taking out his accomplices...
Investigator "How many rounds did you fire?"
Homeowner "One."
Clearest gel ever fellas!! Great work!
Nice slug, the old guys showed me how to cut a # 8 birdshot into a nice slug as well. Cut through the case almost at the bottom of the shot cup and track the cut around the shell to an eighth of an inch from the start of the cut. Works great at 20 yards.
It irks me to no end that US manufacturers refuse to make 2 1/2" slug loadings.
I think the shot on that pork shoulder was the most brutal thing I've ever seen. That seemed to be a pretty good indication of how it would perform against an actual threat. WOW!
Probably a bit less overtly messy against a living target, but still catastrophic for whatever it hit.
So far the most impressive slug. Your on a winner with that one.
The spider running for it's life at 1:49 - love the content TFM.
lol thanks
That is one of the "Deadliest" rounds you've ever shot! And for the most part, it seemed quite accurate!
That looks like it would sting a bit lol - that gummy bear 🐻 omg it didn’t know which way to go it was hit so hard ! Bet that pork is tender … if you can find any of it .
Great job to the creator !! Thanks for all the fun treating you guys do. I want some of these
I'm very impressed. Seems like great for hunting or home defense.
Only if you dont wanna eat the meat.
What game do you go for, Godzilla?
hunting? yeah? Ground meat.
@@joshuajaime8015 what like gophers?
In the shot on the ballistics gell you can see a fragment just make it out of the end and hang in mid-air shortly, just barely made it out and hung there ...so cool!!
I've been watching and loving your channel for over a decade I'd say, but I literally just blasted my FIRST EVER slugs from my 870 recently. Just as devastating and shocking as I figured, it's just crazy. Now I can officially start down the rabbit hole of trying alllll the slugs 😂
I would love to see some of these types of tests done into non Newtonian fluids. Great video!
The silly putty is classified as non newtonian fluid, but I get where you're going and agree
That slug looks like it would be a fun round to test on some hogs.
Instant pulled pork before it even arrives home
I believe it achieves the affect the engineer wanted. I wouldn't want to take a hit from one of these especially without the armor. Devastating.
Hello from Ukraine! Thanks for support our fight for Liberty and Freedom !!!
Thank you! Good luck
What!? you never shot them before?!!? Or just with the shorter wads?
@@taofledermaus Just this particular load. I'd tried 25.0gn Longshot and some loads using Alliant Steel but was more interested in the 5 and 6 petal versions until I saw this video. Then life issues got in the way of me doing much of anything.
@@psykoklown874 These 3 petal ones really stood out over the ones with more petals.
@@taofledermaus I see that now. My mindset before was "more petals = more better". Sometimes less is more.
Very cool test, guys. I wonder how this slug would perform as a 3-1/2 magnum load. Probably pretty gnarly.
Well, you know what they say: There's no kill like overkill.
@@vicroc4 Heck yeah!
If someone made those I'd buy the hell out of them!
I mean they make a mold they sell off this, they are from Russia tho so shipping is expensive and lengthy.
Exploding on jugs got me.
Always like watching this channel. Been watching for a long time. I remember the frist video I ever watched. And I was hooked. I watched for hours that night.
Holy cow what a slug! & What a amazing video, that was so unbelievably cool, Sure appreciate your efforts and quality content thanks for all you do Luv&Peace...🤝🏼✌🏼
thank you
I don't think there would be enough cow left to create a hole. 🤣
@@cycoholic hahaha that so very true! Lol Great comment Cheers!✌🏼
I love your videos, but I still catch myself hoping that Danny will be the 'launch director'. Is it odd to miss someone that you never met?
Anyhow, in a world of evil bastard rounds, that Twister has to be the most evil bastard of all.
It's still surreal to me too. thanks Brian
There are certain people that have the ability to make you feel like you have known them your whole life and are a close friend even when they don't even know you exist....Danny was one of them and I miss seeing him too.
@@hellbillyBob - Yes, I think that you are spot on there. Thank you.
Yeah, I miss him too.
Knowing is half the battle.... extreme violence is the other half.
The way that gel at the end did a dance while shaving cream can was floating in air was just awesome...
I still love this channel after all these years. Have told several people about it. I truly miss Danny. Any way to incorporate his equipment once and a while or maybe bring his wife out for a hello. The two of them were lovely
I did a few things from his family, his shotgun, a range finder, and a bunch of stuff to make the lead plates.
@@taofledermaus I saw all that and I thank you very much. There was just something about him that captured everybody's imagination.
I wouldn't want to be hit with one of these, but I wouldn't be upset for long.
true! lol
Love your channel and your testing video's. I would want this for protection against large bears but I'm not sure it would want to use it on whitetails. Probably too much destruction of good venison. Either way, keep em coming.
If there ever is something like a "Zombie Dinosaur Attack", this is the load for you!
15:24 the gel with the spread withen would be a nice piece to have at a bar or trophy room of course with a round safely secured beside it
I bought this mold from AS Molds in Russia after the last video I saw on this. Got all 4 different hollow point inserts for it. Glad I did, I'm not sure how easy it is to get products out of Russia right now.
As a z fold 3 owner I appreciate you not making it skinny 😭😭😭😭
I hope they produce them commercially! Looks like a fantastic deer round!
I'm thinking they were probably designed for those big old Russian bears.
Yes very impressive accuracy and devastating destruction for sure! But as a Meet hunter this much Meat destruction is not ideal! One shot kills however insured! Nice video! 😎🎯
thanks Ron
I get the impression that these were developed for bear.
