That was a really fun video. I predicted the 500 wouldn't penetrate as far, or closer to the other two. I was thinking the velocity would be about the same, but with deformation the greater mass would be offset, because it would have to plow a wider hole. What a beast of a caliber.

Great video as always! KEEP IT UP! Personally I've always been a huge fan of the .357mag. Still have one of my dad's Ruger Blackhawk 3 screw models, my brother has the other half of the brace. I also have a 1911 in 45acp, it's my second one and I love them! I've wanted a 1911 in 357mag since I was a kid back in the 70s, but they are rare and expensive. I've shot many 44mags, but still preferred the.357. My brother also bought a.500 S&W. He asked me if I wanted to shoot it, I told him, nope not interested. If I wanna get behind that much powder I'd rather have a rifle. 😆

That 1911 is my favorite. I love my 1911’s and 357 mag. To be able to have both in one firearm would be a dream for me. Great video as always man!

    People!
    Good News!
All of these cartridges performed beautifully! If you are packing the.357 mag or .44 mag you are well armed!
If you are packing the.500 S&W you are probably lying like a rug ! A good revolver with quality ammunition will serve you very well and no Bear no hog no badger no coyote is going to argue with a 4.2 inch GP100 Ruger with 180 CorBon jacketed soft points! It ain’t gonna happen!! Enjoy!

Now that was a really awesome fun video WTW. I've always found these paper plate test to be more fun than the gel test, they have a way of showing the real power & penetration effect of a round. Impressive
I have a Rossi lever action carbine in 357mag.
I hand load for this sweet gem.
Using hardcast 158 gr swc bullets loaded a bit hot, they run around 2000fps, and 135 gr lead hp at around 2200fps across the chrony a number of years back (IF I remember correctly).
Thing is, by sound of impact and visually on the range, they are outrunning factory ammo by a long shot. The hand loads make the factory ammo seem pedestrian by comparison (hirtenberger and speer gold dots).
I regularly used the carbine for pig and dense bush smaller buck hunting.
Never fired a second shot with the 158gr swc.
    Boils down to this:
None, and i mean NONE of these calibres are toys. They will sure ruin your day if you are the receiving end of the muzzle flash....
    Enjoy
    Keep on keeping on
    Heads up
    Eyes open
    No fear

Love .357 (first pistol I ever bought) and .44 Mag. Pistol and lever action carbine make the rounds incredibly versatile. .500 is just a bit much to hold onto as a pistol for most.
.500 carbine would be fun. As far as I know, only one company out there that makes one. Only $2500? Well dang, I'll take two...

With hard cast lead or the newer extreme penetrator bullets .They all shine for big dense muscle and bone big game! The most used caliber for me is the .357 magnum. I will step up to the. 44mag on bear or elk but the .500 is just to much for my smaller frame to reliability get possible follow up shots on game animals if needed! Have worked as predator control hunter. Big cats in the dark and alone the .357 mag has shined ! The .44 mag gets a little sketchy! It's little older brother or parent cartridge the .44 special is also a very versatile and easy to use cartridge for that use! I only speak from hunting experience and only recommend what you can accurately and safely can use for your own personal use! God bless you all and stay safe and healthy! Great review HTH and thank you for making this video! Have a great time and enjoy your time hunting and shooting in the great outdoors! Safety first! From Oklahoma City!

I have owned the same S&W model 27 six inch barrel .357 mag since 1978, it does everything I will ever need a handgun to do, I also have a Rossi 1892 carbine with a sixteen inch barrel ( Okie Assault Rifle, lol). I never met any critter, two legged or four that these two weapons couldn’t handle. Yes, I own many other calibers, .243, 30-06, 44 mag, 45 auto, several 9 mm, a bunch of .22’s, several shotguns. I use these other weapons for specific things, for example if I am elk hunting I take the 30-06, deer past 100 yards, the .243……however, 90 percent of everything else gets handled by the first two mentioned above.

I built a holder for paper plates for my own personal tests. I took a 5 gallon bucket and screwed a 2x4 on the side so it sits level on the table. I filled the first 8" with compressed plastic grocery bags and then the stacks of compressed paper plates came right up to the lip of the bucket. I took 3 ups boxes and stuffed them with compressed plastic grocery bags as well and set those, duct taped together and set them behind the bucket. Seems to work fairly well!! I did my new Rock Island Armory 1911 10mm vs my Rock Island Armory M200 38 special. The 10mm penetrated 288 paper plates the 38 special 188 plates. That 10mm is a real beast

I don’t know about paper plates but once when I was younger and bolder, I took a 65 yard shot at a very young buck with my 6 inch barrel .357 mag. The deer went straight down and never flinched. The post mortem exam showed a frontal entrance wound in the brisket and an exit wound just right of the tail, every internal organ was damaged. If that isn’t enough penetration I don’t know what else anyone could ask of a handgun. Granted that little buck only dressed about eighty pounds, but it appeared that bullet made a wound channel about 40 inches long or more.

Interesting pistol ammo comparison. Would like to see a comparison with RIFLE calibers against the same paper plate set up. For instance, how would a .223 compare with it's high speed, light bullet? How about a .243 caliber with it's pointed, medium weight bullet? How about a .300 Winchester magnum with a Barns copper bullet? Should make the difference between PISTOL calibers and RIFLE calibers obvious even to experienced shooters.

    Thanks for the video.
When I saw the title to this video, I was expecting to see a comparison between three revolvers. Was very disappointed when a semi-automatic was substituted for a revolver.
Also, was hoping to see hard-cast lead ammo used for a penetration test ... not partially jacketed soft-lead ammo.
Also, was hoping to see 180 grain 357 magnum ammo used ... not 150 grain 357 magnum ammo.

Sorry if my feedback to the creator of this video offended you. I usually enjoy his videos. I know I have watched over 7 of them and have found them informative and very entertaining.
I do not understand why you would hope that I look to another channel.

I Have an idea, if you take a few different colored markers and mark a line (in different colors for different packs of plates) on the side of each pack of plates. It will be easy to know how many plates each shot went through.

WTW man I wish you hadn’t shown that .357 in the 1911 set up. Now I’m going to have to wash dishes, do laundry, mop floors, wash my wife’s car just to get her to consider me getting one.

Good video, I have the 357 and the 44 mag and was surprised how close they were. For the 500 mag I would have to shoot my 4570 with 400 grain bullet.

When I was a police officer in the 90's, (and very poor!). I would gather old newspapers and bundle them together with twine. I would put them in an ice chest and soak them with water until they were saturated all the way through. I test fired various defense ammo into the bundles. Not very scientific but kinda informative. The PMC Starfire was my favorite, expanded perfectly every time.

how about a comparison between those two 357s? it would be interresting to see if theres a difference between the semiauto and revolver.

If you measured front to back on paper plate penetration the. 357 penetration was approx 10" deep, more than enough for a through and through chest wound on a 200 lb man unless the round stuck in the spine which would be shattered. This is the reason back before departments switched to 9mm semi autos they only allowed .357 pistols to be loaded with .38 sp ammo to prevent over penetration injuries to civilians on the other side of drywall, or across the street from law enforcement shootouts
