The flachette rounds were used during Vietnam because they had lower recoil and were extremely adept at penetrating heavy vegetation. Originally, they were designed with stabilizers on the back end and dumped onto trenches in World War 1 or 2 (can’t remember which). They were extremely effective because they could punch straight through a soldiers helmet, but were eventually deemed illegal in battle. It’s actually a pretty fascinating piece of warfare history.

There was one type of round that I remember my dad purchased. He had it in 12 gauge, and also .45. it was essentially marketed to those who are older and only need one shot to make it count.

They had a fused nose cone that could be set to explode from muzzle end out to I believe 3000 meters (memory may have failed me there). You set the desired range and the round would detonate 200 meters short of that for maximum spread of the flechettes.

The "double slug" sounds cool/devastating; but it's only useful if the two slugs actually spread out - if they travel in the exact same line it's no different than shooting with one slug.

    • @richardkelly897
      @richardkelly897 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

That should have been the first one he tested. I think being on the same line is fine because when the first slows down and expands, the second one would crash into it causing greater expansion and energy dump while exploding the first in every direction. Both shots in this test basically passed through without hitting anything.

I don't think it's anymore effective than a single slug. I've seen this load tested before and the second slug went through the opening created by the temporary stretch cavity, doing nothing to aid in wounding. At long distance (for a shotgun) maybe it would increase your chance of hitting something important.

    Field expedient "slugs"
    - Take inexpensive trap/skeet loads and cut around the shell at the wad but not all the way through.
Upon firing the entire front of the shell leaves as one, essentially acting as a slug.
This was the way old timers used their shotguns to harvest deer during the great depression due to the only available ammunition at the time and the need to provide for their family.

The flechette (in Kentuck, pronounced “Flee Chets”) work direct fired from a 105mm howitzer. The piranha nails are just like IED wounds because IEDs are usually wrapped with shrapnel. The bolo macho gusto grande thing that did not work is chain shot from around the 16th century. Good to see to see George Zip hasn’t beaten that problem. The double slug was bound to not work, besides have you shot something with a 12 ga slug and needed to immediately shoot it again?

The Fletchettes at 4:28 certainly sounded different! The "Tenderizer" acted somewhat like a Vietnam employed Claymore. I would love to see a 12 gauge mini-grenade?

The"Bee Hive". Forgotten the stats on it. I do recall a Vietnam Vet telling me that it would clear out everything in front of the cannon that fired it. Said that it was not wise to stick your head up to see what was going on. He mentioned the 105 mm Howitzer. Does anyone know if there was one for the 155?

Tbh the most interesting ones to me out of this I believe was the shells with the darts and the piranha shells, I’d like to see somewhere test the spread and also how far away it is still lethal, idk for some reason it kind of makes me think of it being like a very lethal birdshot round cause the projectiles are so small but birdshot far away obviously loses its power of being lethal but how much spread it can get compared to other rounds would really make anyone a decent shot, so I’d like to know how much they spread and are still lethal very cool rounds

    • @xBabaYagax

I think the spread starts to become super unpredictable and wide when it's about 12 feet out. They start to lose too much velocity as well. My cousin shot some at a target 15 yards out, and it had a spread of about 6ft diameter. Then, at 7 yards out, he shot at a target, and the flechettes would either bounce off or penetrate no more than 3/4 inch. And he was shooting a phone book. The .22 had more penetration at a further distance. I still wouldn't want to get shot with flechettes at close range though they're made to maim

Would be curious to see how some of the weird self defense ammo performs against ballistic zombie dummies, whether it's the old glaser safety slugs or the g2 RIP ammo, or just generic frangible ammo
On an unrelated note, I would also be curious to see how much damage the zombie torso would take from blunt force trauma while wearing armor
Something like a shotgun slug while it's wearing soft armor
