@@archerelms I’ve suggested it to a bunch of the gun tube guys but none of them have tried it. I’m sure it’s easier to see in person, but sometimes they say the wound track is “crazy” in a piece of ballistic gel but in the video it’s barely visible. Another idea I had is using something as a probe. When they are trying to see if a bullet went all the way through a ballistic dummy, they could just poke a stick or something into the hole and see where it comes out the back of the target.
I have a BFR chambered in 50 Alaskan and the recoil is intense; as one writer described it as bringing your own severe weather pattern to the range. The cylinder was bored out to take a true 50 caliber bullet (.510) and the barrel is a PacNor with an integral muzzle break.

It's so anti climactic, after watching things that go through right proper hydro shock, that this little fur ball just yeets off relatively unscathed. Replays of gel blocks being hit by heavy rounds are always a delight. The small explosions inside can be seen, puffs of smoke leaving out the entrance hole are always guaranteed, while the block itself is flipping around/doing somersaults.
That little explosion is called cavitation and it's vacuum pressure collapsing on itself, creating massive temperature spikes in the thousands. what's even crazier is that the Pistol Shrimp can produce that same thing with its wee little claw
i love that the difference between magnum and bushwacker is the magnum throws the split cans yards into the air and the bushwacker just completely shreds them.
Found this in a very well written article. From the standpoint of cartridge design, there is no question that the BFR is abundantly capable of housing a .530” diameter round operating at approximately 60,000 psi: it was engineered to do so for the .500 S&W
I'll never forget that black and white one opening its eyes to the muzzle of Scott's .500S&W an instant before it was blown to bits. Gah, creepy little things
Ty sir for taking steps to protect yourself. Seeing that look wash over your face after the one handed 400 grain shot is freakin priceless. I used to never have anything to to do with firearms. A friend of mine insisted i shot his 45. I did. That look was on my face. And he was watching for it.
per Wikipedia "The .500 Bushwhacker is designed to operate at comparable chamber pressures to the .500 S&W Magnum. Since the case is simply a lengthened version of the .500 S&W Magnum, the cylinder wall thickness remains the same on a firearm converted to the larger cartridge. Accordingly, the same pressure level can safely be maintained in firearms capable of accommodating the additional cartridge length."
Add on that extra barrel length and you’re set. Honestly I would attribute a large chunk of the velocity gains to the barrel as much as I would the pressure
I commented this in your last video but if you can get the vests they wore in desert storm they come with lvl3a throat protection. They are called the "interceptor" they even have a groin protector too which may be more important than your helmet and faceshield
The groin protector is intended to protect your femoral artery from shrapnel, it's a flap of kevlar that is roughly as protective as an old school flak jacket, meaning that it will keep stuff like 9mm and shrapnel from entering your body, but there is no plate, so a nut shot will absolutely still turn the boys into jello.
Scott, you mentioned you were worried about the pressure levels of the .500 bushwacker round in this video.... from my many years of shooting hunting loading 30+years of firearms knowledge I'm going to say the .500 bushwacker pressure levels should be anywhere from 50,000 psi to 60,000psi... those pressures are high... however the bfr using 17-4ph stainless steel rated for monster magnums I'm sure you are 100% safe! I own the 500s&w and 460s&w bfr pistols and have never had any pressure issues...ci hope this helps you!!! Thank you very much for the awesome videos over the years God bless!!!
Scott’s grip strength and overall size and strength really belies the crazy recoil that these revolvers generate. Watching these videos almost tricks me into thinking I could shoot these with no problem, but I should probably stick to hot .45 Colt loads in my birds-head Vaquero
Will never stop hoping that KB gets his hands on a .950 JDJ, and the double-barrel 2 bore rifle that Forgotten Weapons showcased on his channel a few years back.
id love to see that, but it would be more inline with the punt gun then the other big bore safari rifles as the jdj isnt really shoulder fireable (weight)
Thank YOU, for saying cut-*RESISTANT.* People, advertisements, and commercials alike can never understand that nothing can be weather/rust/cut-proof, etc. Say, if a clothing was to be waterproof, the water will fall off the fabric (or whatever material it is), and not leave any traces behind on the clothing, basically stain-free. You're the best, Kentucky Ballistics! Happy shooting! Also, poor neck & shoulder XD
Seriously guys: How many times can we really watch Scott do the same thing? Shooting cans of pudding and nacho cheese? Dinosaur suits and water jugs? Dad jokes and broken tables? "You got jammed."? Answer: Yes.
The Furby blinked when you shot it in the face. It can blink faster than the Bushwacker can fire and it didn't realize you were filming it! IT SHOWED ITS TRUE SENTIENCE!!!!
the 500 Bushwhacker looks like an absolute beast of a revolver! That sheer power and performance are unmatched in the handgun world. The way it handles and delivers that kind of punch is just mind-blowing.
So 350 grain hollow point at 2000 fps translates to immediate energy dumping on contact. Good to know if you're trying to stop something from space. Now I would like to see hollow points side by side from all the big bore guns and rifles. I noticed most were brass solids or other solid rounds. Do the jello water though. Might need crowd funding to get enough jugs and the round for each one. Maybe take the shots at 25 yards for a visual view purpose.
Hey Scott…..thanks for the demo…..wow, what a handful !! I have a S&W.460 but would definitely love to have that hardware !! From what I have read, the cartridge is basically a lengthened .500 S&W with the same casing thickness, so they designed the Bushwacker revolver with the same wall thickness to handle the same 60,000 psi. Love your videos !! ….keep em coming.
TII does say it retains the operating pressure of the .500 S&W, which is 60,000 psi (though most factory loads stay at or below 50,000). EDIT: One article on The Firearm Blog says that because the brass is thicker, the .500 Bushwhacker can operate at 62,000 psi. They don't cite a source.
@@danwhite3224 Not because of the gap, no. If the gun's going to explode, it will do it before the bullet has gotten far enough to cross the gap. The gun that nearly killed Scott was that dangerous because it was a single-shot, screw-on-breech gun, so when it failed, there was nothing to stop the breech from going straight back into the shooter. Very few guns are that dangerous to the shooter when they fail. A revolver _does_ have a shield behind the cylinder for just that purpose, and since the round at the top of the cylinder would be the one that failed, the rest of the cylinder would mostly protect the shooter's hand. But the topstrap of the revolver could still blow backward into the shooter's head and eyes. If you look up images of revolvers that exploded, typically the cylinder is opened up at the top and the topstrap is gone.
I saw a video from the people that developed the cartridge and I believe they said the same thing. They just used a slower burning powder to take advantage of every last inch of the barrel and get that velocity. 2500fps coming out of a 50 caliber handgun is genuinely ridiculous lol
One thing that people may not consider, is just because the cartridge is longer doesn't mean the pressure goes up exponentially. In fact, without changing anything about the .500 S&W Magnum load, simply adding more volume to the case will LOWER the operating pressure. The idea was to lengthen the casing to provide a lot more room for propellant, allowing a lot more bullet acceleration (in a given length barrel). Does that mean the pressure also goes up? Not necessarily. TI2 did their R&D pretty well. I've read that it is actually quite efficient and burns most of the propellant in the casing length, barrel length, and so on. Pressure testing facts would be pretty awesome. Yet, a longer casing doesn't imply the pressure is a single pound higher than the .500 S&W case. Should be obvious without the right kind of powder and load recipe, you can turn an ordinary case into a small charge of firearms breaker (as per many of his videos demonstrating exactly this).
@5:06 anyone else notice the push rod self-cycling when fired? I'd be worried about damaging any bullets loaded into that chamber - but I guess that wouldn't cause a major failure. Awesome piece of kit!
This is an awesome episode. Love the safety precautions. It's always eye opening because there are some things a regular person just wouldn't think about too much. To me, it's every bit as interesting as the guns themselves. 6:21 And you should feel cool in it. It's safe, and it's responsible. I have the same feeling with my motor bike gear. My bike might look cool, but equally awesome, is some quality gear. Honorable people, treat danger with respect.
I love that Scott feels cool in all that gear because after all it's cool to be protected, safe, responsible, and most importantly alive when handling newtonic forces high enough to be included in a math question, lol
7:10, when the cavitation closed itself, it ignited, it basically produces high enough pressures to produce enough heat, that some material ignited, or the air ignited
Scott, do you have a chronograph sponsor like you have a table sponsor? I looked up some external ballistics for the .500 Bushwacker, it has the kinetic energy of a .458 Winchester Magnum out of a 26" rifle barrel. To get that performance out of a 10" revolver is crazy. The .458 Winchester Magnum has a maximum pressure (SAAMI) of 60,000 PSI. The parent cartridge of the .500 Bushwacker is the .375 Ruger, which has a maximum pressure (SAAMI) of 62,000 PSI. The .500 Bushwacker case is slightly shorter than that of the .375 Ruger, so its case capacity should be pretty much the same as that of a .458 Winchester Magnum. I would guess that would mean the .500 Bushwacker is operating above 62,000 PSI. Not being an expert on interior ballistics, I wouldn't hazard to guess by how much. I think your neck scar is right to twitch a bit.
I don't think it's recoil causing the ejector rod to move backward. Inertia would keep it in place as the whole gun moves back. I think it's the gas or pressure wave coming off the muzzle brake.
I’m less scared of the gun that the spiked ball and chain. The gun is sketchy but he has nearly hit himself on the backswing with the ball and chain so many times
Glad to see you got a 500BW! That cartridge runs 60,000 psi same as the 500 S&W mag. The parent cartridge is the 375 Ruger, which runs at 62,000 psi, so you know the brass can take the pressure. Truly a beast! It's just under a 458 win mag in power, but I'm sure you felt that by now. Another great video Scott!
RIP another chronograph. Someone needs to come up with an armored casing for these things... On a side note htough, when he's shooting the sweet peas you can see how the recoil is pushing the ejection rod down. Really cool!
I've got to say I'm impressed with your left handed, unsupported accuracy with a high recoil heavy revolver. If you actually nailed those small targets first take every time I'm very impressed.
As a Potterhead, everything here adds up, the scar burning when touching something related to the tragic event, the scar, the constant battles with T-REX… I now give myself the title “Scotterhead”

Ok you need to hear me out on this one! After shooting the glue you need to finish the arts and crafts segment by shooting bottles of that most hated of craft items... GLITTER!
That’s what they advertise it as. 50,000 psi is standard 500 magnum with 60k on the high end. They advertise it at 60k, which is what the BFR is rated for. I think our boy KB is looking for some actual pressure test data though.
Damn bro, you handle the recoil from that thing like a beast. Most people cant handle a 357 mag with that much control. The knockdown power of either of those rounds is insane.
Quite pleased with your vid Scott. James and Keith at TII did a great job upgrading the BFR. I am rapidly approaching 500 rounds and loving every trigger press. BTW, no discernable issues with mine. 👍. It hurts soooo good....lol
I saw a video made by the developers of the cartridge and if I recall correctly they said it retains about the same operating pressure as 500 magnum. They just used a slower burning powder and more of it to maintain the pressure for longer and take full advantage of the barrel length. The round is closer to a rifle round than an handgun round/is intended for long-ish barrels like the one on the example you have. Probably a really specific powder and not a good idea to reload them is the only thing
This thing is absolutely ridiculous! Do you want to see more? Regardless I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!

But black powder wont break your wrist. And to this point i am very sure scott is not shooting for the sake of shooting but to test how far his wrist can go
@@grumbazor depending on how much heavier the bullet will be the recoil can go from controllable to being worse

So much myth and legend about black powder. Try research before assumptions.

Scott, if you get a bottle of food colouring or something and pour it into the wound channel in the ballistic gel it would make the wound channel much more visible. Plus it would look cool.
I've never seen that but it would be neat

That was satisfying. My eyes closed and my hair blew back too. If you know what I mean...

I love how at 11:52 after he shot the Furby, the eyes closed like the thing died

Found this in a very well written article.
From the standpoint of cartridge design, there is no question that the BFR is abundantly capable of housing a .530” diameter round operating at approximately 60,000 psi: it was engineered to do so for the .500 S&W
The eyes closing on the Furby had me.
Needed "Ave Maria" playing.

per Wikipedia "The .500 Bushwhacker is designed to operate at comparable chamber pressures to the .500 S&W Magnum.
The parent case is a .375 Ruger

I commented this in your last video but if you can get the vests they wore in desert storm they come with lvl3a throat protection. They are called the "interceptor" they even have a groin protector too which may be more important than your helmet and faceshield
The beans and frank are very important.
We called them turtle suits ! Semper Fi

If they still make them. The Desert Storm ones are all expired by now and not reliable

Just watched a older Paul Harrell video of a 30-30 handgun. Can't believe you haven't had one in your channel.... You have to get one to honor Paul!!!
Scott dose have a 30-30 BFR but only shot it once about 6 years ago on camera. Don't know if he put the video up again.

He has a video with the JDJ
Dunno bout yall, but I hardly saw the Furrbie flinch... with a gaping hole in its chest, it barely flinched... truly a monsterous creature
I love how the case extractor slams back to the cylinder from all the energy leaving the muzzle. That's just incredible!
Nothing is truly waterproof (or anything proof), given enough pressure or time. If it can't stop a waterjet then it's still only resistant

the 500 Bushwhacker looks like an absolute beast of a revolver!
The. 460 is what i upgraded from. I got mine in 14". Its a monster, and i love it. Lol
Would the chance of catastrophic failure in a revolver be lower compared to other guns due to the cylinder gap?
@@Bacteriophagebs Ah fair enough, thanks for the explanation.
That look when he says "I like you guys a lot", LMFAO.
@5:06 anyone else notice the push rod self-cycling when fired? I'd be worried about damaging any bullets loaded into that chamber - but I guess that wouldn't cause a major failure. Awesome piece of kit!
Yup, I did see that on a couple of shots
Love it. This will upset my wife because I got her the 500 S&W Mag for christmas and now she will want this beast.
I just want to say how impressed I am at your skill from that distance using right and left single-handed. 😮
7:10, when the cavitation closed itself, it ignited, it basically produces high enough pressures to produce enough heat, that some material ignited, or the air ignited
Wow that’s cool I just noticed the flash
I can't ever remember seeing the ejector move under recoil like that. Scott is lucky to have survived.
I was thinking the Revolver may last a while. But that ejector rod won't!!
yeah, that's getting sketchy.
Reviewing what you have learned and learning anew, you are fit to be a teacher.
Yeah we are worrying about the brass and not the chamber... smh
I thought it was a little more powerful than the 458?
7:43 Scott I just spit out my f u c k i ng drink LMAO
SAME!!! LMAO!!
RIP another chronograph. Someone needs to come up with an armored casing for these things...
On a side note htough, when he's shooting the sweet peas you can see how the recoil is pushing the ejection rod down. Really cool!
Nothing but respect for Scott, he never stopped, and now he is on top.
I've got to say I'm impressed with your left handed, unsupported accuracy with a high recoil heavy revolver. If you actually nailed those small targets first take every time I'm very impressed.

Me thinking to myself: "Hey, is this the first time we've seen a chronograph NOT get destroyed in a Kentucky Ballistics video!?"
8:07 "Nevermind..."
Well chamber pressures of the .500 Bushwacker for factory loaded ammunition is 60,000 psi.
Man, they need to chamber a lever gun in .500 Bushwacker, imagine the power gain from a long rifle barrel.
They chambered it in a TC Encore single shot rifle. With the 22" barrel it was getting around 3000 fps with 350gr bullets.

16:09 The table: ”Hey Scott have you seen Jim anywhe-…BROTHER NOOOO”
I saw a video made by the developers of the cartridge and if I recall correctly they said it retains about the same operating pressure as 500 magnum. They just used a slower burning powder and more of it to maintain the pressure for longer and take full advantage of the barrel length. The round is closer to a rifle round than an handgun round/is intended for long-ish barrels like the one on the example you have. Probably a really specific powder and not a good idea to reload them is the only thing
