Luigi also says "Oh, My God!" in the Japanese version of Mario Party. Also, "spastic" is a derogatory term for a disabled person in the UK, that's why it's considered offensive.
I'm gonna assume China's censorship with Mario's pirate outfit was due to the skull symbol, I recall there's been a consistent amount of times China demanded media be censored whenever it came to living skeletons, zombies... generally supernatural things associated with the occult I believe. China nearly banned Disney's movie Coco, but it got a rare free pass as the censors loved the the movie's message of the importance of family, despite the movie predominantly being populated by living skeletons. But this is just my guess, there might be something against pirates or not wanting a depiction of a pirate be portrayed in a positive light. Though Japan likely missed the memo the gesture's meaning changed in the west since those olden days. That's not a bad idea. Some franchises have a pitiful amount of items and assist trophies representing them. Nintendo's OG, Donkey Kong, has like one assist trophy and no items (and the assist trophy wasn't added until Ultimate, likely just because they were already making that Klaptrap model for Kongo Falls and Jungle Japes anyway)
You know, ever since maybe mid 2000's I've never seen anyone do the "up yours" gesture. I would've gone under the impression that the gesture has completely faded into obscurity
I get a lot of this stuff, but I'll never understand why Japanese companies think it's necessary to censor guns for American audiences. Like since when did Americans have issues with that?
About the "up yours" censorship: in Japan it's what they call a "guts pose". It's basically just means "I win/I'm strong". As a side note, I've never even seen someone actually do the up yours motion, irl or in fiction. Is it a European thing or something?
That's also a pose on that one poster of that woman. Can't remember her name. I think she was WW1 or 2 propaganda to get women into the workforce while the men were off fighting.
I think the up yours is actually a good pose in Japan, that’s why it’s in the game. I can’t remember if it has to do with victory or winning or something.
Plus in America, it is reminiscent of the old Rosie the Riveter posters, which were used for feminine confidence and strength in the workplace, similar to Japan.
@@magic2546 Don't think it even means anything in America anymore; "Up yours" or otherwise. I've never seen it ever used outside of those Rosie the Riveter posters back in history. I think it is really only in Europe where it's "Up yours."

There actually two ratings not allowing gambling: 3 and 7. That's why a few Pokémon games were rated PEGI 12, the minimum rating allowing gambling.
The reason the boos wear cat ears rather than bunny ears in TTYD is that (for some reason) the Playboy bunny outfit is copyrighted, at least in the US. Nintendo didn't want any unnecessary lawsuits and thus changed the ears. Rereleases of Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros. would also recieve higher age ratings in some regions, kinda like Kirby's Dream collection. Also the pirate outfit's appearance was most likely censored because of those laws against gore in Chinese videogames, even though the Skull is cartoony. As for why it's renamed, maybe China just hates pirates because of the whole stereotype about China producing pirated and bootleg media?
The Marioro ads in Mario Kart 64 are a parody of motorsport sponsors. Tobacco companies used to be very common sponsors, including Marlboro. Over time, ads for tobacco got banned in more and more countries, so they aren't really a thing anymore. Now energy drinks have taken their spot. Check out the 80s McLaren formula 1 cars.
Another thing with the Shy Guys in Mario Kart Super Circuit is that they are wearing Native American war bonnets in the picture with Luigi, which in Native American culture, MUST be earned through courageous, honorable, and selfless acts, and not simply paraded around meaninglessly nor used as a stereotype as, obviously, not all Native Americans would have worn them. Though, of course, the whole thing of Native American-inspired Shy Guys just attacking people out of nowhere still would never be seen as culturally appropriate, either.
Yeah Birdo has been pretty controversial. Also in Melee, they use "She/Her" in her description, and in Origami King they use those pronouns as well. It's basically confirmed that she is female, but in the east, it's almost as if they're purposefully offending her by using male pronouns since they used that original description from SMB2 (Which is very much transphobic, since Birdo herself identifies as a woman yet they still call her a man). I've got friends who happen to be trans, that love Birdo bc of that and it makes them feel represented. It's a very similar case to Vivian from TTYD lol
About the sombrero, my best guess is that wearing a sombrero is considered _closed_ culture, where it's rude to participate in it if you're not of that culture unless you're invited. Contrast that with the American flag outfit, which is _open_ culture that can be used by anyone without breaking social rules. It's similar to the reason some people argue that people who aren't indigenous American shouldn't try and figure out their spirit animals- the concept of a spirit animal is considered closed.
13:42 I believe I heard that it was removed because in England, the word 'Spastic' is an offensive term used for someone with Cerebral Palsy. So Nintendo just decided to pull it off the shelves and remove the word.

the censorship of Mario with the "sombrero" was by a group of women who came out to say that he was a demigrant, when these women were from the United States, not Mexican or from Latin America, she was just a stupid person who felt that we were offended when we were happy to see that on the game, because in Mexico and South America we liked that cover. But as I said, a group of American women were offended when they didn't even know
Although I am not bothered with the fact of the content mentioned have been censored, however I am interested of how Toad remarks about rights of his race. I think Birdo shouldn't have been censored that much if people wanted to be clear with representative of the Birdo race's gender. However for myself I consider her female and I have a plush.

7:40 I find it very hard to believe that the Inkling girl was doing an "up yours" gesture. The much more probable (and -child friendly- explanation) Is that shes mimicking the gesture of the woman on the "We Can Do It!" poster from 1943. It's not that big of a stretch, if you think about it. Inkling girl, at least as far as the games go is depicted as a very strong, independent girl; The exact demographic of the poster. As for Bowser in Super Mario RPG, i'm guessing hes doing the same general gesture of pulling back an imaginary sleeve to flaunt biceps.
A "spasm" is just a muscle thing yes, but usually the term "spastic" refers to autistic spasming, or any other physical or mental disability that is typically viewed in a negative light That's why most people usually see "spastic" or "spaz" as ableist terms (Doesn't stop a lot of people from still using them though...)
So about mexican mario, the image was removed because of one person on twitter (which wasn't even mexican or latino) who complained it was "cultural appropriation" when mexicans didn't even mind Basic gringo stuff is all boils down to
7:19 I live in Taiwan. The ROC is the Republic of China, the old Chinese government that fled to Taiwan in 1949 after the Communist Revolution. Taiwan is technically still the ROC, but nearly everyone here identifies as Taiwanese, not Chinese. China is the PRC (People's Republic of China) and they claim Taiwan as part of China because it was a part of Qing Dynasty China before the Japanese took it and made it a Japanese colony. China is super sensitive about Taiwan, and would absolutely censor the ROC flag. Taiwan does not censor the PRC (Chinese) flag, since Taiwan is a Liberal democracy and China and Taiwan being separate things isn't controversial over here.
Also, in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for some reason in the American Version (not sure for others) when there is a player from Hong Kong in your lobby their flag won’t appear.
the toad murder scene was censored to get the E for everyone, because iirc some nintendo people talkede about it and said that they paid advertising places and store stuff in advance and that if they do'nt get the E rating then it's all going to waste, and heavily affects the game's marketing capabilities
Birdo is made female by the fans and later Nintendo put a bow on her head supporting the theory, but I’m sure it’s a species similar to a Yoshi. for a young player to see her shooting eggs at Mario the player might not think about it much thinking it might be something else.

Say, this is quite interesting to note about the censorship of various Nintendo games, primarily Mario games most of all. Of particular note, in Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, when Mario chats with certain NPCs, his raised flat hand to the air gesture looks a lot like a Nazi salute, so Nintendo had to modify that to not make Mario do that to avoid Nazi implications. Also, I can note the reason why Nintendo altered Kamek's dialog in Mario Party 8 when he said "spastic", which in the United Kingdom is considered offensive because it refers to people who have disabilities and that is why Nintendo altered the dialog to make Kamek say "erratic" instead. With all of those censored moments that I can note and observe here, those are just some notable examples where Nintendo had to censor certain things so as to avoid controversy and possible backlash.

Isn't that kind of like what happened in real life with the American-Natives? I can definitely see why the American audience needed that censored.
3:54 Okay… that’s just awesome 😂😂
I have an idea for a Smash Ultimate series. Adding a new item for every fighter (can be entire new item or assist trophy/pokeball)
Nice idea!
Yeah this is American that we’re talking about they talk about guns a lot.
9:39 fun fact: in italian there Is still wine and not the chuckola cola
About the "up yours" censorship: in Japan it's what they call a "guts pose". It's basically just means "I win/I'm strong".
As a side note, I've never even seen someone actually do the up yours motion, irl or in fiction. Is it a European thing or something?
No I never seen someone do it so I guess not, must be because it can be seen as a rude gesture to some
That's also a pose on that one poster of that woman. Can't remember her name. I think she was WW1 or 2 propaganda to get women into the workforce while the men were off fighting.
@@espurrseyes42 you're thinking of Rosie the Riveter. That was a WWII thing.
It's rare, but I have seen it. Mainly in comedies, I think.
It's an older gesture, but it checks out, the only thing that comes to mind... I think it's in Spaceballs?
I think the up yours is actually a good pose in Japan, that’s why it’s in the game. I can’t remember if it has to do with victory or winning or something.
Plus in America, it is reminiscent of the old Rosie the Riveter posters, which were used for feminine confidence and strength in the workplace, similar to Japan.
@@Daniel_Coffman Yeah! And also one thing that kind of surprised me, is the fact that they didn’t censor Goh doing the pose in the English dub!
Does that pose just mean up yours in the UK? Because I'm pretty sure it's just a way of telling someone that you're strong in America.
@@magic2546 I’m American too, idk.
All I know is that it means “up your butt”
@@magic2546 Don't think it even means anything in America anymore; "Up yours" or otherwise. I've never seen it ever used outside of those Rosie the Riveter posters back in history. I think it is really only in Europe where it's "Up yours."
Birdo's gender is the same as Mangle in FNaF, it's "Yes"
as a native american person, i will say that the difference between the sombrero and the war bonnet or native headdress is that the sombrero is worn for celebration and casually and by everyone but the war bonnet is made with eagle feathers which are sacred, and only worn by a person who has earned it the same way a soldier earns a medal. i don't see anything *horribly* wrong with coding the shy guys the way that they are but it does make me a little uncomfortable. not because of anything in the mario game, but because it reminds me of the racist ways other media has used such imagery and what they have said with it. anyway that's just my take
3:14 gambling in video games taught me never to gamble considering how bad I am with money. I learned I have a “just one more” mentality at a young age thanks to them
The thumbnail has me confused, but it is hilarious 😂
(3:35) Party lacking in information there. Yes, PEGI does not allow gambling in games rated too low and it would increase the rating. But PEGI doesn't have an E rating.
Do bunny ears really resemble the full playboy bunny outfit enough? They're just freaking bunny ears.

Truth.
Mario Party:
Wario losing minigame:
Japan: Oh my god!
International countries: Oh, I missed!
I don't see why they have such a problem with Birdo, I mean, seriously, Yoshi lays eggs and he's a dude!!!
I just put the inconsistencies down to Birdo canonically being gender fluid
My headcannon is that Birdo is transgender, and now Nintendo refers to her as a woman due to respect
She’s a girl.
@@walkerphillips2818 yep, that's my point. She is a girl, and people should refer to her as a girl
@@walkerphillips2818 epic transphobia fail
I have the reason why no skull on pirate mario because skulls are seen as bad luck in China
The up yours symbol was used used in splatoon 2 as part of the squid sisters dance moves during the final battle
Finally someone noticed this
About the sombrero, my best guess is that wearing a sombrero is considered _closed_ culture, where it's rude to participate in it if you're not of that culture unless you're invited. Contrast that with the American flag outfit, which is _open_ culture that can be used by anyone without breaking social rules.
It's similar to the reason some people argue that people who aren't indigenous American shouldn't try and figure out their spirit animals- the concept of a spirit animal is considered closed.
Well that's very xenophobic of them.
13:42
I believe I heard that it was removed because in England, the word 'Spastic' is an offensive term used for someone with Cerebral Palsy. So Nintendo just decided to pull it off the shelves and remove the word.
Random Toad: talks about how people have rights and deserve freedom
China: we don't do that here
Odyssey: It's illegal to depict a skeleton in China. Evidently just a skull counts.
"you may never see my videos again"
It'll be all I will see
I can't even choose to get rid of it
13:50, here in the Land of the Rising Apple Pie, we use the term simply for “go crazy!” Across the pond, it’s directly associated with cerebral palsy in the same way a certain word that literally means “slow” is automatically associated with people that have mental deficiencies.
0:09 What is the name of the song in the background?
time attack from mario galaxy i think
That thumbnail is hilarious
Sometimes censorship’s are for the better, though it’s always fun to check out the darker sides to Mario we never saw
the censorship of Mario with the "sombrero" was by a group of women who came out to say that he was a demigrant, when these women were from the United States, not Mexican or from Latin America, she was just a stupid person who felt that we were offended when we were happy to see that on the game, because in Mexico and South America we liked that cover.
I think she’s a trans female 🏳️⚧️

3:00 Me (as a Korean) : There were mini games in Super Mario 64 DS?????????????
If you are Korean then I have a question. So the mini game are unlocked by catching the colored rabbits as every rabbit got a key to unlock a mini game. Any rabbit caught can end up shiny to get the 8 keys for that door by the characters with a Star in it. My question is did the colored rabbits give you nothing? I'm guessing they never gave you keys outside of the glowing shiny ones. I have wanted to ask somebody from Korea what they did and if they got removed or edited down.
@@cartergamegeek im not sure, actually.... it’s been a long time ago, and I didn’t play the game too aften. But I do remember there being no minigames... I’ll look into it! I’m sure I can find a korean youtuber who played this game!

10:54 Japan: make character with blackface
USA: "censored" coloring all orange
5:56 to answer your question they have law over there where there not allow to show people's skeleton or death of any kind don't know how they got around the skeleton characters in Sand Kingdom but regardless also in China thay can show a person being frozen either.
13:56 it means someone affected by cerebral palsy
I actually have the reason that the pirate outfit was censored it was because skulls are offensive in Japan 🇯🇵 and they removed the eyepatch so no connections were made
Gambling with luigi was the fricken best.
I like to think that in paper mario its more like he's waving
It is a wave, but that pose looks really bad.
Miyamoto has confirmed that birdo is a girl despite past confusion
citation?
A "spasm" is just a muscle thing yes, but usually the term "spastic" refers to autistic spasming, or any other physical or mental disability that is typically viewed in a negative light
That's why most people usually see "spastic" or "spaz" as ableist terms
(Doesn't stop a lot of people from still using them though...)
Spastic was a term used in the UK to describe someone with Cerebral Palsy. It had nothing to do with autism.

Also, in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for some reason in the American Version (not sure for others) when there is a player from Hong Kong in your lobby their flag won’t appear.
taking sombrero mario off the front of the box of mario odyssey was pointless because the same image is still on the back
the toad murder scene was censored to get the E for everyone, because iirc some nintendo people talkede about it and said that they paid advertising places and store stuff in advance and that if they do'nt get the E rating then it's all going to waste, and heavily affects the game's marketing capabilities
Birdo is made female by the fans and later Nintendo put a bow on her head supporting the theory, but I’m sure it’s a species similar to a Yoshi.
for a young player to see her shooting eggs at Mario the player might not think about it much thinking it might be something else.

9:40 not in all versions ! In the french version it's still alcohol, a "Grand Cru", to be precise, but the texture is indeed the censored one
Back in around Early 2017 I got a Nintendo magazine with an SMO poster, and that was the original version, before they changed mexican Mario off the cover. Unfortunately, my mom threw the poster away a few years ago, due to age.
