The whole Shiek debate is stupid. Zelda obviously just disguised herself as a man. She pretended to be a man, that's why everyone thought she was a man. It's like Mulan, or Lucina from Fire Emblem. It's not that hard to grasp. She had to hide from Ganon, it was the safest thing to do.
I don’t think the shiek thing is a censorship. She’s dressed as a dude, so everyone in the game who meets her thinks she’s a dude. In-game, it keeps the immersion to convince you it’s a dude until the big reveal. Since then, everybody knows it’s zelda so they just call shiek a her
Also he makes the comment about "having to turn into a man to become more powerful" which is outright incorrect. Zelda did not turn into Shiek to be stronger, she turned into Sheik so that Ganon wouldn't recognize her and allowed her to help Link. This is shown twofold as most of Sheik's help comes in the form of wisdom and advice, which is not gender dependent. And more so in the end when Sheik drops his guard and reveals himself as Zelda only to be INSTANTLY captured by Ganon without him even being present!
My thought on Sheik is that I always thought they labeled her with male pronouns to hide the fact that she was really Zelda, since at the time, it was a massive plot twist in the game.
It’s only complicated with the gender identity nonsense of the west trying to use gendered language as a way to validate it. It’s simple she’s very good at drag and didn’t break character
The reason why the characters in OoT refer to Sheik as male is because they don't who Sheik is and assumed she was a he or for surprise factor they don't want to spoil it to the player. And it's been like that for the next following years since the release. Now, Nintendo is open to Sheik as female because her game is more than 2 decades old
Grapeyv Not really. They referred to her as male because at that time she was pulling a Mulan on Ganondorf, the same reason they referred to Link in-game as female while in Gerudo drag. And remember that Metroid also referred to Samus as male for the same surprise factor as Sheik in her game. Of course the secret is as known nowadays as Darth Vader being... you know, so why hide it anymore? And remember that she wasn’t the only princess to pretend to be a dude while in disguise. Remember Lucina?
Admittedly, they did have to heavily censor Bayonetta when she uses her hair. It seems that to the ESRB (And similar rating boards), the presence of skin is a bigger issue than their figure alone lol.
@@regalblade8171 Lyn has big boobs, but she doesn't show anything revealing so she would be fine though I did find it annoying how they made the size of Cordelia's chest armor smaller since in Awakening there is an optional scene where it is revealed that she purposely made it that way so people wouldn't know she was flat.
Fun fact for anyone who didn’t know: at some point after ultimates release, an update to Xenoblade made a Nopon appear in one of the towns that, probably after Mythra is introduced, gives a free aux core (special gear for blades and this one was indeed very good for gear) that gave Mythra her smash design that even covers her not hidden back with the tights as well. Actually looks pretty nice.
Yeah I typically keep that aux core on and tights start to grow on you after a while, but until today I didn't realize they they covered her cleavage in smash, something that never happened in XC2

"Shiek is confirmed to be a woman by this article" Well duh, its Zelda in a disguise. The debate about Shiek's gender should have been over and done with the moment people found out they were actually Zelda.
I feel like the debate comes from Sheik's design as the N64 the use of male pronouns plus the muscular chest coupled with every other appearance of Sheik is shown with a fuller chest
You're stretching it with sheik, she was ALWAYS just Zelda in disguise. She was reffered to male many times throughout the game because they were trying to *hide her gender and identity FROM THE PLAYER.* This is so obvious its not even funny.
That’s an interpretation. Like their description in the manual said, they’re Zelda’s "alter-ego". It’s a whole new personnality that Zelda crafted to hide herself, a personnality which is the one of a young man. I’m not talking split personnality or trans identity here, i’m just saying that Sheik could simply be a male character, played by a female "actor". Sheik is not Zelda in the same way that Spiderman is not Tom Holland. At least, that’s my interpretation of the situation as it was presented in OOT
Zangelin the world "alter ego" was literally created to talk about split personnality disorder, and is still now used to designate another personnality that is distinct from the main one. An alter ego is a new personnality, who can very well have another gender. To get back to the example of acting I used before, know that it was common in the time of Shakespeare that male actor would play female roles (maybe it was systematic but I’m not 100% sure). Does that mean that Gertrude of Denmark is a man because she is played by a man? No, she has been created as a female, and is the actor’s "alter ego", despite being a different gender. This is so obvious it’s not even funny.
Lurony Personally I say it’s not this case when considering OoT from a 90s Japanese perspective. The idea of Sheik being male stems from a mix of Aonuma and the devs wanting to hide her identity from the player as well as the in-lore focus of hiding Zelda from Ganondorf to not obtain Wisdom, combined with the fact that Japan in those times were a very appearance-focused society when it comes to identity. If you dressed like a man and hid your features well enough, for all intents and purposes, you are a man. A dissociative identity/alter ego is much different in context, as generally speaking you can’t just “switch” these identities at will like Zelda does with Sheik, and to put that into context, here’s some examples from around the same time as OoT that make use of alter egos/dissociative identities. The first being Male Shiki from Garden of Sinners/Kara no Kyoukai, whom is an identity that was created by Shiki’s parents to hide her power to A. Prevent accidents, and B. Keep maguses and other existences from learning about her abilities. And generally speaking, Male Shiki does nothing to change his appearance to fit his identity, which I’ve noticed is a common line in Japanese media that portray this properly, so in many cases he’d be misidentified as normal, female Shiki. Now with the second character, we got Boogiepop from Boogiepop And Others/Boogiepop wa Waranai. As with Shiki, Boogiepop is a male identity within the character Touka Miyashita who exists to defend order in the world and appears whenever threats pop out. Generally speaking he conducts himself as he were a male and uses male pronouns, but appearance wise he doesn’t do anything to change much besides wear his outfit to be an identifiable “shinigami” so as to cause threats to act when rumours pop that he’s around. If one were to get close rather than see him from afar at night, he would also be very quickly identified as Touka from standard people that wouldn’t think of dissociative identity playing a part in the character. Likewise, with both characters, they don’t just flip a switch at will and go back to their normal selves, it’s something that happens organically when the situation calls for them to exeunt. This, as I mentioned previously, is in stark contrast to the Zelda/Sheik scenario and I can say with 110% certainty that this was not Aonuma and Miyamoto’s intention when creating OoT.
Agu Fungus right haha. Honestly props to Nintendo for making the cross dressing thing not too offensive or anything. I mean the NPC who tells link to wear the Gerudo garb may be a bit of a stereotypical gay man/drag queen, but the way the actual outfit change readily fools almost everyone in Gerudo town is just handled in such a nonchalant and cool way. (I mean when the first BOTW trailer was released people thought Link was a girl lol, he looks more feminine/ also kinda androgynous but that’s just kinda the case, and I personally think it’s really cool. : ) )
I don't think the Shiek thing is censorship, the whole point of the disguise is to look like a male so that the player will be completely surprised by the fact that it is Zelda. Also you probably should of mentioned that the "up yours" motion is much more offensive in other regions, such as Italy or other European countries.
The disguise Zelda used "storywise" is more to prevent Ganondorf from capturing her. However the surprise reveal works quite well due to Shiek's entirely male body to surprise the player.
See to me, Bowser definitely seemed like he was doing it as an 'up yours' and definitely suits his character. But when Inkling did it I immediately thought of Rosie the Riveter in the WW2 'We can do it' motivational poster. Which I thought was pretty cool, but I get where it can be misconstrued.

Ok, well, there’s multiple variables to it. Firstly, it doesn’t make sense for her to wear black tights specifically. She’s a light blade (I’m saying blade to make things simple) and is predominately white. I know her personality isn’t all light (if you know what I mean), which I suppose the black tights can represent, but it just clashes with the rest of her attire. But if we’re excluding personality, the artwork of her in the tights is pretty bad at showing she’s wearing tights. It just looks more like her legs are black, which is what they did so....... but her in-game model in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with the tights is great. Black tights do make Mythra more sexy, but for the most part how they represent Mythra with the tights, it just doesn’t seem right. Her exposed thighs are beautiful
Somewhat surprised you didn’t cover the Mario Kart Cutscenes (don’t remember if it was Super Mario Kart or GBA) but the characters took a swig if alcohol after a race, getting drunk.
I always just felt like they refered to Sheik being a male as a way to not make the connection that Sheik is Zelda to make sure the twist comes out of nowhere by making everyone believe Sheik was male when in reality it was Zelda
Now that Pyra and Mythra are both playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pyra is also censored. Where her thigh is shown, it is replaced with a brown cover (this is not the case with any of her spirits).

Would it really be that much of a difference if she was 18 instead? It just makes everyone uncomfortable.
@@Bailey_West Yes and no. The age of consent in Japan is technically 13, however there are still laws in place that prevent large age gaps from being formed. Being 18 and up while trying to get together with a 13 year old can and will lead to either a misdemeanor or felony. Essentially the age of consent being 13 only really applies if both parties are 13 or slightly above, large age gaps do still lead to legal actions. 18 is still pretty much the "real age of consent" in Japan. There are other rules and differences depending on where exactly you are in Japan that you should probably research if you want more information, but still, age of consent isn't really 13.
Jordan Tillman ok, yeah, but then why bother making two “western” localizations? Seems a bit silly and like too much work for then to care. Youre dealing with a company here.
It's the equivalent of the middle finger in many Latin countries and some other European countries. I bet in some countries (maybe Japan?) it's seen as a thing that a rascal would do, like blowing a raspberry, but otherwise I can see why Nintendo wouldn't want what's basically the middle finger in one of their kid's games lol
Because we normal people dont think everything is offensive. Just like how Karens got offended over the Game Corner in the pokemon games because it promoted gambling.
@i .candy I guess it's more to do with having several generations of people growing up in the digital age and interconnectedness with the rest of the world. Normally it's a good thing to introduce people to new perspectives and backgrounds and learn how to deal with differences, but now even the world's village idiots have been able to convene and become heard. The real problem is, some of those village idiots are also our politicians and high-roll investors who get to tell everyone else how to think. Being "woke" has lost all meaning by now. It's not even about social justice anymore. It's about politics controlling the Internet, but that's been happening since the 90s when the Internet was first getting widespread in the US. It's just gotten more and more filtered ever since, but it is what it is.
The Mythra censor in Smash may actually be a reference to her special outfit in Torna: The Golden Country. In the late game, you can get an equip that boosts Mythra's def and similar things and covers her legs with tights and her chest. It's also completely optional. So it's either a reference, since the art of her Spirit does exist in Torna or it is indeed a censor
I think the Outfit is called the Massive Melee Outfit and the Nopon who gives it to you says it’s good for people who like Smashing and Brawling. I think it’s a reference to the Smash Spirit censorship.
Gray Shores yeah in the base game he says “does it increase your blasting distance” and something about it being the *ultimate* core in reference to smash ultimate as well

Beau Rafferty I disagree that it’s understandable. Why should media/art be censored? Especially when an artist’s/creator’s/etc’s work is meant to be enjoyed as they made it. People will be offended by anything and everything now, so let them. Yet let people enjoy things as it’s meant to be (as long as it’s not harmful at least).
@@silver7215 I disagree. Mythras design for instance wouldn't be ok for a game that's for all ages. As well as that different cultures find different things acceptable. Here in most of the western world a 13 year old wearing a very skimpy bikini is not ok in the slightest.
Yeetus Deletus for girls that are under 18, yes, in an adult’s pov, that’s kinda weird/not cool, but you gotta think, a lot of young people that are the age of the characters in the game (as in, the gamer is also 13 or so) play these games too. And especially for boys around that age is when they start to get those hormones going. And well, that sells. You don’t have to like it, so just don’t play those games. Alphaxel The core for it in the main game you can get early as the npc that gives it to you is a nopon found in Argentum which is the first area and he shows up if you have the game updated to the last patch. Won’t do anything outfit wise until you get Mythra though a couple chapters later down the road (around 15-35 hours in depending on what you do.) otherwise it’s still a solid core for any crit based blade and has the near same value as a base endgame crit core (IV or V IIRC.) As for Torna, it also pops up pretty early too.
I like how everyone approved of the Mythra "Censor" because it basically improved her over all attractiveness. That's the kind of censorship we need, one that everyone agrees with.
I agree, and I kind of found the amount of times the game goes out of its way to give you a look up her dress annoying after a while. I mean, when you watch the cutscene of them watching a tirkin threaten Tatazo(Tora's father) in the factory Mythra is literally bending over and giving the player a full view of her ass.
I mean....it's only okay since it's optional, but if I had to pick that over Mythra's original outfit, I'd pass on the censored outfit all day every day. Plus, it's not like it's the end of the world since it only really is mandatory in smash and she's not even playable
I disagree with you vehemently, the only censorship we should have is optional censorship. if you don't like something you can flip a switch and change it ( like the helmet hidden feature in games like mass effect) but that doesn't and shouldn't apply to everyone.
About the 13 yo girl... In Japan, 13 is the "legal age" in the sense of 18 is the "legal age" in America. So it's less of cultural acceptance and more of different laws being in different places.
Cultural acceptance still plays a part in this. If 13 was suddenly made the legal age in areas where its 18, we would be disgusted. So many people are disgusted by the states where the legal age is 16, imagine if it was as low as 13.
In Japan the age of consent is low at 13, although some municipalities such as Tokyo prohibit sexual activity under 18 years old in most circumstances.
I completely disagree with Vodka Drunkenski's character being "offensive" and the censorship being justified. Not only is this a game that, as you said, stereotypes everyone - Japan included, mind you - but also, it is no different from the stereotype of Irish people drinking beer a lot, which they just gleefully embrace for shits and giggles, not unlike Mexicans embracing the poncho and sombrero stereotype, which is why Mario wearing those in Odyssey was also not offensive to them. It is up there with Bear Hugger's stereotyping, and the only reason why it was censored was to keep alcohol references out of the game for game rating reasons, not because it is "offensive". Literally nobody thinks that.

I feel like the debate comes from Sheik's design as the N64 the use of male pronouns plus the muscular chest coupled with every other appearance of Sheik is shown with a fuller chest
You're stretching it with sheik, she was ALWAYS just Zelda in disguise. She was reffered to male many times throughout the game because they were trying to *hide her gender and identity FROM THE PLAYER.*
This is so obvious its not even funny.
Lurony good description
@@caihly2443 Alter ego tends to commonly mean disguised identity yknow that right?
The "up yours" pose only means that in some locations and cultures. In many it's a symbol of confidence and dependability, it is not an issue.
plus didnt rosie the rivoter also do that same pose?
Well it doesn’t help that in this vid the guy didn’t even clarify why that pose was supposedly “offensive” 🙄
I just assumed that official sources called shiek with she/her pronouns just because it’s not really a spoiler anymore
And besides, no one has a problem with still calling Link a guy while in Gerudo drag, right?
Agu Fungus right haha. Honestly props to Nintendo for making the cross dressing thing not too offensive or anything. I mean the NPC who tells link to wear the Gerudo garb may be a bit of a stereotypical gay man/drag queen, but the way the actual outfit change readily fools almost everyone in Gerudo town is just handled in such a nonchalant and cool way.

RIP Mythras thighs, gone but not forgotten
She looks a bit better imo
@nikz² why do you say wrong things?
are you insane? dont you know that black tights on thighs are the greatest thing ever?
She looks even hotter now
Ok, well, there’s multiple variables to it.

The Shanaman you’re joking....
Oh my goodness, just googled to confirm and you’re correct.... it’s ~13... my god. No wonder anime has ‘waifus’ who look 9 but are “secretly a goddess who is 900 years old”
@@Bailey_West The problem with Lin in my opinion is that even though she is technically 13, you take a look at her and she seems way older, and in the actual game she is an engineer. They create characters that are supposed to be young but then make them look like adults. I just don't get it. If you're gonna have that type of outfits, why make her a 13 year old?

The Mythra censor in Smash may actually be a reference to her special outfit in Torna: The Golden Country. In the late game, you can get an equip that boosts Mythra's def and similar things and covers her legs with tights and her chest. It's also completely optional. About the 13 yo girl...
In Japan, 13 is the "legal age" in the sense of 18 is the "legal age" in America.
So it's less of cultural acceptance and more of different laws being in different places.
actually not every state has 18 as "legal age", some are set at 16 or 17. Yes, I know it's still creepy.
Cultural acceptance still plays a part in this. If 13 was suddenly made the legal age in areas where its 18, we would be disgusted. So many people are disgusted by the states where the legal age is 16, imagine if it was as low as 13.
The minimum possible legal age in japan is only 13 but each prefecture gets to decide its own, and they all decided pedophilia is bad.
I love the Japanese version of Lin because I'm very accepting of their culture. But I understand people have their own views, and I know I'm going to get backlash for this.
How do you not have more subscribers? The quality of your videos is top-notch and your content is very original, not to mention that they're of a nice, watchable length. Glad I found you, subbed and I hope you grow as a TH-camr even further.
Did everyone forget about zero suit samus from the transition of 4 to ultimate?
Did this guy forget that Zero Suit Samu’s chest was shrunk from Smash 4 to Ultimate
I was searching this literally this week, i guess its why it popped up as the first video on my recommend lol.
Fire Emblem: *pat cute anime girl head*
The west: NO! >:C
Pokemon: *pet Machoke's crotch*
The west: OK! :D
Why
For reasons like this and more I often wonder why some Pokemon have an E rating instead of a E+10. I do not want to sound like an old-school puritan or even worse, a progressist puritan, but some of the elements aren't a good idea to put in a children's game like animal abuse or some dialogues or artworks.
And here I was thinking Smash was for good boys and girls.
I actually think the censored version of mythra was actyally an unintentional upgrade i really dig that version more
The manual probably called Sheik a make to avoid spoilers
About the whole ‘there’s no excuse to sexualise a 13 year old’ argument, go ahead and search up the age of consent in Japan, buddy.
My disappointment is..... Immeasurable and my day is ruined.
I've always though that game and watches forward smash was a mop... that burned you
Same here! I was like "okay" since hes a wild card.
Wonderful video!
Wow dude, thanks for compiling this but it's kinda pathetic how you're praising most of the censorship, it felt like I was watching china commenting on the game.
Surprise surprise, companies don’t care as much about what’s canon as fans do lmao
I feel like that shiek one has been nabbing at you for a while, even though it was not needed.
I was expecting the thing from Mario Party when Kamek says "Magikoopa magic, make this train spastic, make this ticket tragic." but they changed spastic to erratic because it's a bad word used against the disabled.
10:52 HUH Wow how is that even a Up Yours gesture? That pose is actually the same pose from the woman's rights poster. So people misunderstood that gesture and women's right gesture is not a good thing? I feel like people complain over the smallest things when reality its called parenting. "Hey (son or daughter) that is not a good thing to (do or say) don't do that or (punishment). How is it parents don't do this but complain to companies trying to make money and make something for the community get hurt. Customers are not kings. If we didn't have people inventing things we be back in the 50s. Thats like saying hey cell phone community stop allowing other people from talking to my kid when you as the parent should put them on a parent call only list in the first place.
The inkling and Bowser up yours just looks like Inkling is showing off their muscles (that they don’t have). And it honestly just fits Bowser’s personality.
The thumbnail is ironic seeing as she's in smash now
My theory for Shiek is she said she was a boy in order to not giving any clue about her real identity to ganondorf or his minions
Mythra actually has two forms in XC2, in different points in the story/ in Torna: the golden country. The censored form wasn’t actually made for smash.
Yes it was. the outfit was added via an aux core called Massive Melee Mythra as a jab to smash for censoring best girl. Several more outfits were added via challenge mode dlc including swimsuits.
@@samreddig8819 Monolithsoft made the censored outfit for Smash though, so it wasn't a jab. It being added in Xenoblade 2 was a fun bonus to celebrate Xenoblade 2's 1 year anniversary.
Meanwhile my mom when she sees Samus in her Varia Suit: "Is that Metroid?"
