Back in grade school, my friends and I were playing "Mario" in real life by throwing mud balls pretending they were fireballs. It turned into a mud ball fight involving 20 kids, and we all got sent to the office. We got released shortly, because there was too many people.

I guess culturally speaking, it made sense for Miyamoto to do that back then because (from my very limited knowledge) Japanese anime and manga usually represent the “peace/victory” sign as a childish/silly gesture. So I just assume with Mario becoming more kid oriented plus doing the peace sign was the final straw he had with his character being too silly/childish at the time.
It kinda makes sense, but even Richter, protagonist of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, did a peace sign around that era, so if a non-kid friendly character can do that sign, why a family-friendly character wouldn't be allowed.
I thought the "peace sign" is pretty common Japanese, especially if you are taking a picture. Kawaii characters tend to do that a lot.

Yeah it sounds like a cultural difference we don't really understand outside Japan. I can understand why he never considered Mario a childrens character. The games aren't always easy and his original intent wasn't to aim them at children but older people with complex thinking and timing. Personally though I think it's good that Mario has become so vast because we get such a wide array of game types so there's something for everyone.

Not everything you see on the internet is true, it's like when they say that Miyamoto hates DK Country and he came out to deny that it wasn't true. It has also happened to Akira Toriyama that they say things about him that are not true and to others.

I had a weird feeling when you said the V finger pose had been used for the last time in Super Mario 64, so I went to check, and Mario also does the classic twirl into V-shaped fingers towards the screen when you complete a level in singleplayer mode of Dr. Mario 64, a game released in April 2001.
Yeah, there have been several comments pointing out other games since SM64 where Mario can be seen using the gesture. Funny how they haven't been challenged though...

The peace sign over in Japan represents love or a heart, so that's primarily the reason why that gesture got banned.

Heck, from what I heard Miyamoto thought the final version of Sticker Star we got was boring lol.

Yes, it‘s considered as „hornes of a bull“ in some mediterran cultures but the palm faces the other direction as in the „Victory/Peace“-sign I think. It‘s like a raised middlefinger.
Isn't the symbol reversed means "up your *ss"? The hand sign obviously being flipped as being seen from the opposite side (where you do not see any fingers, similar to the middle finger). Hand symbols are strange.

It might seem strange to you or me (since I live in a central european country), but it's true that we can't understand other cultures until or unless we live by them ourselves, which usually means growing up or living in another country for a long time. this is an important point which people all too often forget. it seems like a lot of people simply don't understand the passage of time and don't realise that a massive chunk of Nintendo's original fan base are now adults with their own children.

You know, it's really interesting. I was watching a bunch of kids play Mario Kart, and several of them were talking about the different Koopalings they liked.
IIRC, lots of fans don't like the Koopalings for taking up so much of the roster. But from what I observed, it seems that the younger audience actually does like them. It really made me think.

Hey! This is kind of interesting to me, because it explains something about Paper Mario for N64 I've wondered about for years. In Super Mario RPG, Peach, Mallow, and Mario all give the peace sign when they win battles. In Paper Mario though, Mario does gestures that better suit an older gentleman. He can vary between wagging his finger, giving a thumbs up, and tipping his cap.
I always noticed it and liked it, but it also felt odd to not see Mario do his standard victory pose.

I never saw the peace sign as childish when I was younger. I saw it as "I got the thing! Peace out yo!" Or something like that. I found it really fun, recognizable and to a ceratin extent, cool.
Are we also gonna talk about how in Mario kart 8 when inkling hit someone with a shell they used to do an ‘up yours’ sign.

I'm just saying that if he was trying to get all old names right while trying to show it's who Mario was 'at that time' he could've gotten it right at least to further show the change he went through. I think they added a reference to it in a later game with a song. .. I just haven't played a lot of the more recent Mario games since these tend to make me feel sick trying to play them. x_x I'll stick to just 2D

Odyssey wasn’t the first comeback of the peace sign in a “Mario game”. Luigi does a peace sign in Luigi’s Mansion when he gets a key for a room I believe.

Daisy does the peace sign in plenty games during the period you suggested. Even shortly after Mario 64 in Mario Golf Toadstool Tour Daisy flashes the peace sign for her animations.
The chances of seeing the peace sign may not be that low. I saw it on my first ever play through of sand kingdom. It was a great sight to see, sense I don’t play anything that came before the Wii

I'm convinced the peace sign is still banned, that's why that random option is so rare, they probably told him they'd randomize the other options but didn't tell him they'd add that one too. So they made it more rare so by the time he noticed it'd be too late and the game would literally be in millions of homes.
