There have been many controversial Pokemon in the series' history but in these cases Nintendo had no choice...they were forced to censor these characters...

For reference, Pikachu actually set off the explosion in the episode, but they wouldn’t ban the mascot from the series so they put the blame on Porygon.

I love the little origami bird but it never shows up in episodes anymore because of the way pikachu’s explosion was animated. I am quite upset that that was porygon’s debut episode because now whenever people see him they think of this.

I guess the choice was somewhat understandable if we assume that knowledge regarding seizures and the dangers of flashing lights wasn't that well-known, but even then, it's dumb that Porygon hasn't been brought back to the anime because of something that wasn't its fault nor even Pikachu's. You know something's messed up when me, a certified Pikachu Anti, is defending the rat over something that could just as easily be pinned on it as it was pinned on someone else.
Nah I'm gonna have to hard disagree with the censorship of Lopunny. Playboy and acting seductive is what was considered sexy back then. Now, athletic women and yoga pants are sexy. So Mega Lopunny is really just continuing the sexual theme in the modern era.
For real, they literally imply torn leggings. If anything it's more overtly sexual.
The fanart only increased, if anything.
Also worth mentioning is that the bunnies in the playboy mansion were actually trained in military martial arts, so lopunny just got promoted

Why have they never lifted that ban on the Porygon Family? Pokemon should have let Porygon Z appear back when Ash was traveling through Sinnoh as it had been over 10 Years. The kids who watched the Porygon Episode all grew up long ago, & its evolutions were banned before they even existed. Tons of other 90s Anime (DBZ among them) had seizure scenes & some of them were allowed to keep them like End of Evangelion on Netflix. All this & Porygon Family is still banned 25 Years Later. The covering up of the Porygon Episode went way too far.
I hope you know it's not just Nintendo, not to put any blame on Game Freak, just saying.
@@thornx2152 Of course it wasn't Nintendo or GameFreak. There was conspiracy stuff that made the Japanese Government declare a WorldWide Ban on that episode. As for Porygon Z I believe that was created by Creatures Inc. Nintendo had absolutely nothing to do with the Pokemon Anime other than funding it to promote the games.
Just imagine some Japanese Kid asking why the Porygon Family never shows up in the anime & how awkward the answer would be for Pokemon Company. Sometimes I feel that Rotom was chosen to replace Porygon & its evolutions.

In all reality, the Porygon disaster was Pikachu's fault, but in order not to lose the franchise's mascot, they used Porygon as a scapegoat.
Another reason I like Raichu more. Raichu is good and would never kick another pokemon out of existence.

I noticed in the Pokémon anime that every time a Pokémon used an electric move the screen was dimmed. I think this was to do with the Electric Soldier Porygon incident but I’ll have to double check.
i noticed when watching some earlier episodes recently that when an electric move is being used, the frame rate is dropped significantly, probably to retroactively make the flashing less intense. after the porygon episode, the framerate is no longer dropped, it seems like they just animate the electricity differently
this is just what ive noticed not looked up though, so it might not be accurate

Been noticing that studio-finished screen dimming during intense lighting changes is a modernized anime industry staple for more than a handful of studios. The Pokémon Company was kind enough to broadcast that it had some catching up to do on information that it wasn’t aware of during the airing of Porygon, and it’s good to see them learning more than the old fashioned frame-rate techniques.
The Early Episodes originally had the seizure risk effect that the Porygon Episode had however they were edited in response to said episode & later episodes avoided the effects entirely.

I read somewhere that Nidoqueen couldn't breed because it was based off of rhinos.. and rhinos can't breed in captivity. Something similar is the fact that rhydon can learn surf because it is based off of a rhino that loves water. Love the content!! Keep up the awesome work!!
I’ve heard it was just gen 1 being gen 1 and since in that game they had the same Dex number they had to use a separate categorisation system for this line in particular and that didn’t let them register for breeding

I believe an official Japanese Pokédex book made during the Gen 1 era (pre-breeding) states that female Nidoran lose the ability to breed when they evolve (for some reason I do not know... could be your Rhino thing, could be something different, I personally blame menopause), so it might just be that Game Freak are sticking true to that original design aspect of the pokémon.
(Source being a translation of said book over on "DidYouKnowGaming?", if you're interested and haven't seen those videos, about 15/16 minutes into the first part.)
If you watch the Porygon episode, or the Pokemon WTF Moments recap you'll find out that the only reason why the flashing lights happen is because of Pikachu using thunderbolt. Pikachu ruined the Porygon family life

The fact that humans did marry (and breed with) pokemon is pretty obvious.
Humans in the games have psychic powers, say that they have "extremely strong connections" to certain types of Pokemon, the fact that Lillie can hold Nebby in its evolved state and the fact that Green in Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee flat out says "let me catch you in a pokeball and then you can be my pokemon too."
And in the anime, Max can lift a Munchlax, Lucario's aura powers are shared with certain humans...

The sad part about JP introducing Gyaru fashion trends to the west is that even SEGA property had a comic localized (long after Nessa fanart Twitter drama) that somehow sustained the tan-style Gyaru fashion for a wild animal themed look (that any attentive editor would have re-drawn with different costumes), but guess what happened again? Yep, the media cried about feelings… again.
Unfortunately, Jynx is forever doomed to be purple with the amount of complaining that game journalism likes to do with one-sided articles which ignore a country’s actual culture. 🙄

I'm surprised that Pokémon had to censor arceus name pronunciation. Originally, It was pronounced as Ar-see-us,but had to change it because in the UK, it had a shocking resemblance to their
word for um, "bottom". Every since then it was pronounced as Ar-key-us.

Regarding the Nidos, they're based off of rhinos and the weird breeding stuff in game is built to mirror the irl breeding habits iirc(besides, the anime is a completely different canon, just look at the baby legendaries we've seen). Plus, they haven't combined the Nidoran versions because they have separate Dex numbers.
Plus at the time, gender differences weren’t really coded in. If they were, we’d have one Pokemon less for Gen 1.
@lavaquil It made sense as far as Gen 2, but with Generation 3 came Gender Variations, which meant Game Freak could easily have shifted the Two Nidoran lines into a single one, like they were already doing for Wurmple. Only the National Dex was preventing them from just combining the two lines!
Any Major Shift in the Game Coding after that point, like moving to a new Platform, would have allowed Game Freak to do this - and with the National Dex's removal in Sword and Shield, there is _absolutely no_ reason to delay it any longer, besides *being Lazy...*

gamers throw around the big c word all the time but I want to pose the hypothetical re: Jynx's origins. so sure it's based on a jp fashion trend. but is it possible that this fashion trend may have been inspired by a mockery or at least a caricature of black people? societal trends in fashion, art, etc. are not exempt from being rooted in discrimination themselves. and while I could imagine the fashion trend might not have been invented with the intention of being offensive, and most people who partake in the look might not be trying to mock people, there is a pretty easy line to drawn here. between the hallmarks of fashion being heavy use of makeup and darkening one's skin.
to be clear, I don't know what the origins of the fashion trend are. I don't know if it was at all meant to be an emulation of black people/african americans. I just think it's worth asking. whenever someone talks about jynx, they go "well jynx was actually supposed to be an emulation of a fashion trend so it was all a silly misunderstanding". and it just seems like we could follow that interrogation a little further in asking what the origins of the fashion trend were.

actually...he pretty much invented the illusion and the fact that its name was based on his gave it credibility. He also did not base the case on kadabra's appearance but that in the anime, psychic types were made out to be actual monsters that could bend the fabric of reality to their will (Sabrina and Kadabra made child's play out of Pikachu's attacks, turning a thunderbolt into an electric dragon to chase Pikachu... oh, and they almost murdered Ash and friends multiple times over. You may remember Brock and Misty being turned into dolls and placed into a doll-house with Sabrina's mother? You want weirder though? In the manga, it's WAAAAAY darker than that. If I remember right, she, like many children would, tore the limbs and clothing off of the dolls, among other things
I fail to see how Lopunny's mega evolution was intended to 'censor' its sex appeal. Not only is it wearing an extremely low cut shirt that doesn't even extend past their rib cage, but its also got holes torn into its skin tight leggings!

9:30. It was referenced. In one of the missions our character finds a journal describing a romance between a human and a frolass posing as a human. It's not definitely stated but implied. It is based on a story but it was written in a journal by the man. Also when you find the journal it is being dug up by snorunts. The mission is called traces of a lost village. Its strange but the detail does get referenced.

It is probably a reference to Yuki-onna's, a yokai Frosslass is based on. Yuki-Onna's are snow woman (what it literally translates to) who, similar to succubi, would lure men lost in the mountains to their frozen demise.

Actually there was a japanese databook back in Gen 1 (before eggs were even introduced) that said that Nidoran female looses its ability to reproduce after evolution. I really don't know why they'd cling to this kind of obscure info though, but it makes more sense than this being due to Nidoqueens animation cause that is no reason for nidorina to be unable to breed too.
Slightly creepy (even for me) to imagine the tiny Nidoran female getting mounted by a giant Nidoking in order to breed.

Nidoqueen was always not meant to reproduce. It's meant to be a reference to how rhinos have difficulty reproducing in captivity lol. This is mentioned in their pokedex entries all the way back in gen 1 and 2
It's still fucking stupid. It's already dumb that the Nidorans' different genders are different species, but it's even dumber that it's harder than it needs to be to breed them since the female counterpart can't mate with other PKMN for Egg Moves.

Thing about Nidoqeen? It not being able to breed in the games was the original intention and it is deliberate. It's specifically that Nidoqueen won't breed in captivity. Wild ones will lewd each other up all the time, but once you capture it they refuse to have kids.
This is truly a certified Porygon moment.

What I don't get about the idea of Mareep being based on Dollie the cloned sheep is that they already HAVE cloning as part of the backstory of Mewtwo (and later on, Ditto, as a failed Mew clone)... so why would basing sheep on a cloning experiment be so bad?
I'm guessing it's because the cloning of mewtwo was shown explicitly as evil..Having a line of pokemon created from cloning that wasn't mewtwo would fit with mewtwos backstory and would also hold some dark implications for the sheep seeing as mewtwo clearly is meant to demonize cloning (it was terrifying for mewtwo, mewtwo was being used, it literally killed people to escape, ect). Maybe mewtwo was created instead of the sheep idea to put cloning in a darker light as that seemed to be the publics opinion?

But in Pokémon legends of arceus he becomes feared once you evolve him into porygon-Z in which the Pokédex entry says “A curious item induced this evolution. The Pokémon's offensive capabilities have greatly increased, but the strangeness of its behavior has magnified in equal measure. This worries me.”
Porygon is feared in legends arceus because it's a manmade pokemon in a time period where that isn't possible..imagine an android one day walks up to you fully capable of thought like a person and even talks like one (even able to eat), you'd probably freak out too! They don't know what it is, how it works, or where it came from; people tend to fear what they don't understand.
The porygon disaster wasn't just people having seizures, it was also a case of mass hysteria, just like the salem witch hunts
Technically, the playboy look still applies since one of the ways for a good-looking person to stay hot is to exercize, and it's still based on a stereotypically sexy aerobics woman.
It wasn't even Porygon's fault. Pikachu used one of his electric attacks on a rocket in that episode, and the effect the animators used to show the rocket exploding sent some kids to the hospital with seizures. It was Pikachu's fault that Porygon was censored and removed from the anime. Ever since I figured that out I felt bad for Porygon and it's evolutions. They're neglected because of the actions of Pikachu.

The saddest thing about Electric Soldier Porygon is that it wasn't even Porygon's fault. The seizure inducing explosion was caused by Pikachu detonating Team Rocket's missiles.

The line about eating at the same table made me think of them being more like family than pets, being seen as equal to eat with everyone else. Definitely could see how it would be taken differently with so more r34 out there though which the company clearly knows about lol.
There's plenty of other evidence around. 1. Girls holding the arms fawning over a guy dressed as a Machoke 2. Gardvoir being changed from just Amorphous to Human-Like, so it makes it have potential to breed with humans. 3. There was a Ditto gang where they had turned into humans, and they blended in so well the police needed help finding them. Ditto is well known for breeding any pokemon. 4. Lopunny's design 5. Latias turned into a human and kissed ash in an episode.
@@donlee7878 Human-like does not mean they can reproduce with humans..it means they literally look human-like. The egg groups go by what a pokemon looks like pretty much! Such as the 3 water groups depending on what the pokemon looks like, or field being animals you'd likely see in a field, ect. It has nothing to do with what they can breed with (it'd be as hell if field egg group meant they can breed with fields, or water1 meant they can breed with water, so human-like lik-wise wouldn't follow that line of "egg group named after what I can breed with".)
@@testerwulf3357 The other parts the make the world seem weird is 1. humans' worship Pokémon as their god. 2. Every Pokémon was made by mew when it was the original Pokémon at its time. People didn't seem to be around before this maybe. 3. People have developed physic abilities like Sabrina which adds to the idea that people are a type of Pokémon or share something with them.

Speaking of the Canalave Library censorship, I once made a simple romhack that uncensored the censored book.
(19:00) I had a feeling Porygon was gonna be here. Unlike the other censored Pokémon, Porygon does not have popularity to save it. I bet 90% of people have never used Porygon because it was locked behind the Game Corner. Being the most expensive prize, Porygon took insane effort to obtain. Even if you did get Porygon, it did not have amazing stats. Poygon was the perfect Pokémon for Nintendo to quietly let go.
I am thoroughly surprised that neither gardevoir nor lucario had any history of censorship given their reputation today.
I still want a Evolution for Jynx. I think it deserves it. A Ophra Viking concept would be so cool. I can't be alone in that, it sounds dope😃

I also like Jynx bc of that it packs a punch. And can be very annoying with Lovley kiss. So I respect it as a pokemon. But yeah it is a beast but a pretty Ugly one😂
The inspirations behind Jinx would probably make it so that it doesn't have an evolution.

And if you watched some leaked information of Jinx cry with a slight change. So it sparked a bit of hope. I think it might be a while though if it happends. Possibly in a region based on Scandinavia or something like that. Bc that's were Viking mostly originated from.
Also if such a region comes, Perrseker will be in it🙂

In the original, instead of eating and living together, it actually was that people and Pokemon married because they "were once the same", aka share a common ancestor.(Interesstingly, that part was vaguely kept in the west, just slightly less clear) And this text is actually still canon as far as we know. The lovers-bit may just be a diffrent timeperiod than what we got to see and the same origins-thing was never directly contradicted iirc.

I think Nidoqueen can breed in the wild, but the fact she's partly based off rhinos, it's extremely difficult to breed them in captivity as female rhinos must be in groups to be able to feel comfortable and safe as they help protect each other and their offspring from potentially aggressive males that don't discriminate harming a young calf to mate with the female. So that being said, it might make sense that the larger evos would reference real life rhinos and the struggle that is trying to keep rhino species from going extinct when they are in such low numbers that it's so difficult to even breed them in capacity. So that's why we can't breed Nidoqueen.
I also am slightly irritated by Porygon as it was freaking Pikachu, the mascot of the damn company, that did a thunderbolt that caused the odd light show, and yeah weird choice of using two colors to flash brightly, but Porygon legit had nothing to do other than it just happened to exist within that episode, and they had to have chosen to take Porygon because well it'd be pretty damn weird if we woke up the next day to find out their own mascot was just suddenly gone or replaced.
The stupid things about the Porygon episode is that:
1) Porygon may've shot the missiles, but PIKACHU is the one that blew them up and caused the flashing lights.
2) The animators could've just not animated the explosion as flashing lights. THEY chose to animate it that way instead of just a cloud of smoke or a flash of white light. There was no reason to essentially ban Porygon for something THE ANIMATORS caused.

For the nido thing, remember that the nido line is six total pokemon. Merging the king and queen sides would offset the entire franchise pokedex numbers by three.
I think it's more so why don't they combine nidoran female and male into 1 dex entry..not both lines into 1. So it'd only offset the dex entries by 1.

Also, as to your entry about the books in that library in Diamond and Pearl: Oh, but it gets better! That line about Pokemon and humans eating at the same table? That was ALREADY censorship in and of itself! That replaces a line in the Japanese version of the game, stating that "long ago," humans and Pokemon would get married and start families, because back then, there was no difference between humans and Pokemon.

Lopunny is a strange case for me, first their cry was weird to me as a kid, it sounded "suggestive" to an extent, now I see why that pokémon was popular.
Their cry from what I remember is based on the "wolf whistle"..the sexy suggestive whistle guys would do when they saw a lady they thought looked sexy, cat calling.

While it didn't get censored, I was hoping you would talk a little bit about the parent who thought Blaziken in Pokken was showing off it's junk all willy-nilly.
Baby pokemon aren´t useless. They actually serve a pretty important role in the games since they´re meant to be a way to add pokemon that you wouldn´t normally be able to have in early game for being too strong for that stage of the game. By giving them a pre-evolution the player can have access to such pokemon while also getting the evolution at a decent point of the game after training.
Not to mention that they also make the evolution lines feel way more complete and it allows to make more sense as to how they can come out of an egg when the pokemon is quite big (and I´m still waiting for a pre-evolution to tropius and onix because there´s no way they can come out of an egg with that size.

To be fair about the swastikas, the swastika used in the golbat card is flipped from the actual N@zi swastika, so it "technically" isn't the N@zi logo, but still good of them to not take any chances.
Kogas Ninja Trick is using the "Manji" Symbol, which is seen all across japan, and many old european buildings that date back to before the 1900's. I'm also suprised that nintendo were able to get away with a "Manji" Dungeon map, what with the whole world at that point often mistaking it for a swastika. in the first Legend of Zelda game. look it up! i believe its level 3, that has the Manji, as the dungeon layout!

Check your facts. The Porygon story was wildly inflated when it happened, not to mention caused by Pikachu, Nidoqueen has canonical reasons for not being able to breed, Mega Lopunny is still a reference to sexy culture (ripped yoga pants).

The whole Nidoqueen not being able to breed is because of female rhino's becoming infertile later in life. Lockstin made a video about it a while back.
