  • The SOFT-T Wide is compact and can be easily folded to make an ideal EDC tourniquet. Unfortunately, it also comes with some drawbacks. This video focuses on several tricks to applying the SOFT-T, as well as how to flat fold it so it can be more easily carried.

    I just picked up the Gen 4 of this tourniquet and I had to watch the video of how to flat fold it and I will be carry this tourniquet on me everyday and I’ll keep my CATS in my aid bag. Thanks Sam for the great videos and tips.

    Good tips on how to apply it one handed. I've always found CAT easier to apply one-handed. For that reason I prefer CAT where I may need to apply it to myself. For EDC I too prefer this one because it is so flat.
    This video was a good reminder of to practice applying those. I've not done practising for a while and really needed a retry just to keep familiar with those. I also keep other practice items like israeli bandage that has been opened just to practice with it every now and then. If you need one, the time really counts.

    I would recommend putting duct tape pull tabs on the rubber bands so you can rip them off quickly with your teeth if you need to apply it to yourself.

    As a skinny-jean-wearing millennial or Zoomer or whatever, I’m glad there’s something smaller than the CAT that I’ve been carrying for civilian use. Of course, I’d rather a CAT over nothing but now I’ll be switching over to the SOFT-T. (My CAT is a cheap knockoff too, so even more reason to switch!)

    I carry a flat-fold SOFTT-W as my EDC, either in my back pocket or my jacket and couldn‘t love it more.
    I have CAT TQs on my aid bag because space is no issue there.
    About the RATS: It is about the same size as a flatfold SOFTT-W, so there is no reason to stick with it besides you don‘t get the idea of evidence based medicine...

    I haven't used either. But from the looks of it, both are great for applying on another person. However, for applying on oneself, it depends on where you're applying it. For application on your arm, which will be done one-handed, the CAT seems the superior choice because it won't spin as easy and appears easier to initially tighten. For application on your thigh, the SOFT-T seems superior because it's easier to "unbuckle" and apply around your leg in situations where you might not be able to bend over to slide it over your foot, and have the use of both hands.
    For those of you inclined to carry two tourniquets, having one of each might be a good idea. Given the amount of money some of you spend on your tactical gear, the expense is not an issue. I would keep the CAT where I can get to it with both hands (like near the front of your belt or on your chest), and the SOFT-T where I can get to it with either hand (back of belt, side pocket, etc.). Also, you don't want rubber bands on your CAT because they may be difficult to remove one-handed when under stress. Moreover, if you just go with the SOFT-T, better to put it in a pouch and forego the rubber bands, again, as you will have difficulty removing them one-handed.

    I learned that you place it as highest on the extremity. Someone could bleed out in minutes. And blood vessels are somewhat elastic. So when it’s severed it’s possible for it to retract past the wound.
    Also something about the locking bracket, it’s very useful when there’s blood everywhere. It’ll be way easier to push it into the bracket than trying to worry about trying to hold the triangle and the rod at the same time.

  • @kenm8955
    @kenm8955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Won't be as flat if you have the locking clip which you don't have on your tourniquet. Definitely a useful addition. Gen 4 comes with one and you can get a clip as an add on for the I guess Pre-Gen 4 model you have in this video, but I'm sure you knew that. That being said, putting the bar to the side idea works well. Thanks

    Thank you! Just learning about TQs and this is the one I got - or at least very similar, as it has hooks to hold the windlass while you stabilize with the triangle. I read that it should be applied above the elbow/knee, where there is a single bone. Please correct me if I'm wrong (for much lower injuries, of course).

    Question- if you had one arm pinned, would you be able to unbuckle the SOFTT-W one handedly to get it around?

    • @bgb6260
      @bgb6260 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you open the loop up a bit before you fold the TQ up beforehand, you can actually put the loop around any extremities really easily. ITS Tactical has videos about that folding technique.

    • @ZombieTipz
      @ZombieTipz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bgb6260 Oh I know that part. I meant say you get your arm stuck under collapsed debris or something (Ala Aron Ralston/127 hours) and you physically can't use it as a loop. In this instance, you may need to unbuckle the SOFTT-Wide, manually put it around your arm, and re-buckle it.
      In the Stop The Bleed class I took a couple weeks ago, we had trouble buckling/unbuckling the SOFTT-Wide with BOTH hands free. I'm just having a hard time imagining doing with one-handedly. Your thoughts?

    • @bgb6260
      @bgb6260 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZombieTipz Teeth, maybe?
      Arguably, the situation you're implying is a very unusual one, where you would have to improvise (as you have to in any emergency). The SOFTT-Wide is indeed a quite fumbly tourniquet, but gently and carefully bending the clasp may help. But I can see your struggle there.
      In defense of the SOFTT-Wide, I could not imagine the pain the velcro strap and buckle of the CAT Tourniquet would produce in a one-handed situation...

      I mean you could take a First Aid class if there are any in your area, whether it’s by your school or through the fire department/hospital, etc. All I would recommend is getting your mindset in check and getting in peak physical condition, determine how bad you really wanna be a PJ, and stick to it. You will probably take a decent amount of classes that the Air Force will send you to, like Combat Lifesaving, etc, I wouldn’t worry about it now but if you can learn the basics if you choose to, but I would just say enjoy the rest of your time in high school.

    IMHO: no way you will be able to apply the SOF-T with those rubber bands on while one handed. Thus it can only be worn as a back-up tourniquet to apply on other people. Or on a leg, BUT you can be also one handed with a leg wound, so, I really don't recommend it. Here in Ukraine we use CATs, they are awesome.
