I recommend to write the time on the forehead of the injured person. The tourniquet is covered in blood so a sharpie won't write well. Also, to prevent shock you put a emergency blanket around the person. The medic team has to search for the timestamp. If it has written on the forehead the medic team sees it in a pinch. 👍
I've learned to write it as followed :
    * T (for tourniquet)
    * 0000 (current time of application)
Wright now it would looks like this:
    T2304

i agree but one minor change most civilians do not know military time and so i would say for civilians doing regular time is fine and faster because in a emergency trying to figure out military time is wasting time.

We were told to write the on the timestamp in blood if need be, but that is a good solution to write on the person with the marker

Great vid Skinny! Firefighter Medic, Pro Skipatrol here … IMHO, both are great! The CAT is great for pretty much every situation except snow. The SOF-T is better for Ski Patrollers and backcountry skiing adventures because the Velcro on the CAT tends to fail in snow and colder freezing conditions. It gets packed with snow and ice and will not hold as well. Other than that, both are awesome products that I have personally used! 😎🇺🇸

Just took a class yesterday using both. I liked how the soft T could be undone so you didn't have to slide it all the way up a limb, but if you weren't careful the strap would turn sideways when pulling tight. I will still run both in my kits though.

  • @bbs5400
    @bbs5400 ปีที่แล้ว

I just got one. I knew I needed one, and finally decided to buy one. I went with the SOF T, only reason being the CAT tourniquets are supposedly only a one time use, so you shouldn't practice with it, as the velcro can wear and not hold anymore, where as that isn't the case with the SOF T. Seems great, feel like I could practice with this thing for eternity without ever worrying about it not being 100% reliable in a real situation

War story warning: I remember going to EMT school school in the late 80's and being career EMS in the early 90's. Back then if you used a tourniquet for anything less than a traumatic amputation you would need to brace yourself for the walk of shame into the ER. You were also supposed to write the letter "T" on the patient's forehead along with the application time just in case the ER staff was slow on the uptake and missed the tourniquet during their assessment. It's still amazing to me how elevation, pressure points, trendelenburg, etc has gone out the window over the years.

    Great video!
SOFTT wide:some chaps complain about setting it in the triangle is a bit difficult under stress....but I prefer that to may have to fiddle it through the buckle as with the CAT.....the SOFTT locking mechanism is superior here(imho!)
Also the material of the CAT is more prone to collect debris.

He He... BTW Pigs don't sweat. They don't have sweat glands. That's why they lay in mud, to cool off! They do squeal though, as in the phrase "Squeal like a pig". Now horses sweat, hence "Sweating like a horse" would have been more appropriate. :-)). (Pigs get a bad rap, they are actually very clean animals. Given a large enough pen they will do their "business" in the furthest corner.)

All new here… but a store that seem to sell all blue force gear for two times the price said I cannot practice with a real one but need a trainer to practice with, is this correct?… i see blue force got a blur trainer, though that is the c-a-t and not the soft T which is the only one they got in storage right now…
Can I train with the cat and still learn to be fast and correct with the soft T or is that not a good idea as a beginner?
I was thinking to order the soft T and the blue c-a-t trainer and their trauma kit now medium with a hammock for the tourniquet…
    What do you think?
    Thanks!

The only thing that I see as a concern on the Soft T is how the windless is secured. Theres nothing actually "locking" it in place in the triangular clip. A good enough bump to the windless itself could release the tension on the clip and let the windless loose. With the cat this isn't an issue with the way its designed especially with the velcro tab secured over it.

Question for you guys, I'm off to Asia for a few months and looking at altering my medkit. Thought of taking a swat-t for weight savings but worried about how robust it will be in the crazy climate. So mabe a soft -t would be better. I currently have the last gen cat (red tip) but should I be worried about this standing up to a bit of abuse? Basically concerned about plastic degrading in the climate.

InItForTheParking Funny you mention that, our unit had a meeting recently with US/UK clinicians and one of the questions asked was if the SOF-T was better than the CAT. Apparently the US did some trials and came up inconclusive and all of the surgeons said none of them had seen or heard of a CAT ever failing, as a result both the UK and US continue to use the CAT.

Leonard Belcher Only use TQs once. You write the time (24 hour format) you placed the TQ. Once you have deployed it, don't reuse as a main TQ. Clean and keep as a backup. It's contaminated and it's tensile strength can't be trusted. They are cheap enough, especially because they save lives.

And not sure how I feel about plastic as apparently some of these have broke in the field. That's the last thing you want to worry about someone's bleeding to death and it breaks. It's already bad enough these things can come off easy if not snugged tight.

I am curious to what your medical training is? Do you have any experience or simply review products?
Good video and product review. I am a former Canadian Forces Combat Medic (Airborne) - currently a civilian Paramedic - International Trauma Instructor, I have never needed to use a tourniquet to stop a bleed to date. There is a lot of hype about having a tourniquet.
Direct pressure will stop 90% of all bleeds except arterial. I carry one in my back country kit as I am remote, often hike solo, so it could save my life. A simple triangular bandage and your knife as a windless will also work as an improvised tourniquet.
If you have a buddy the tourniquet is not the first go to if you are treating a bleed. Remember after 45min to 60min, if you are not at medical aid the limb will begin to die due to tissue hypoxia. If you are in the back-country and there is no rescue imminent you may lose your limb. You must remember tourniquet were designed for combat and quick helo evac to a medical trauma team and vascular surgeon.

Paramedic 15 Years ... teach TCCC, PHTLS, ACLS, PALS, and BLS
Current standards are to apply direct pressure and if you can't control major bleeding then you apply a TQ. TQs can be on longer than 60mins, you need to look at some updates on that. The currently standard is 4-6 with out major problems. There are case studies where TQs have been on 12 plus hours, and no loose of limb.
A good commerical TQ is much better than a triangle bandage and a knife.

SkinnyMedic true shit, says 4-6 hours right here in the book I paid 2 months income for. Third time I've opened it all semester.

As a medic nurse and ER Dr and swat physician I have had to use the tourniquets many times. Even in hospital. ESP in hospital with folks on blood thinners and/or dialysis with bleeds. Skill saws to the hands and bullets to the leg. Even for arterial bleeds to slow bleeding to get sewn up. I love em. I use em and I keep plenty with me. Great video.

OK, I'll ask you the same question I asked Prep Medic. What do you have against Recon Medical tourniquets? They have excellent reviews from Military users as well as civilian.
Why does no one do a review on them? Are you guys so stuck on NAR that nothing else matters?

The SOFT T wide simply sucks for one handed application!
Try to apply it without manipulating your injured arm-not gonna happen....@ least not until there is a lot of the red stuff on the ground-and that doesn't help in administration, or does it
I do like it for buddy help, though-much more so than the CAT T!
Why? =>easier to apply in hazard situations because of the buckle, no Velcro to accumulate debris or wear out in the sun, no plastic to break, longer too
As was said before, the RATS or H&H TK4L is hard to beat for compactness, self application, use on kids and animals.
    Stay strong

Might the broken CATs have been cheap knock-offs?

J T we've broken two of the cats when deployed downrange. Luckily we had extra tourniquets and it wasn't US service members that they broke on. Our CLS kits had the cat tourniquets, and we were also issued the softt tourniquet with the aluminum windless for self aid use. Mine still rides in my self aid/buddy aid kit.
