- In this episode we will evaluate the Lupertazzi family in the Sopranos with the Bonanno, Colombo, Genovese, Lucchese, and Gambino families of New York, with the primary focus being Johnny Sack since we see the most of him.
What are your thoughts?
I think you were spot on with the comparison between Phil and butchy and John Gotti and Sandy the bull
Johnny Boy D'Amato, one time Jersey family boss was considered as Gotti's pupped by his underlings. Jersey guys already unhappy with it, used his girlfriend's testimony about him being a fag to get rid of him for good. Whereas Vito was Uncle Phil's cousin by marriage, thus makin him a solid candidate for the boss title had Tony died before Vito's 'soft' side exposure.
I dont know if Vito's was ever considered by fans to get the big seat, but he was a top earner after Ralph went to Australia and already mention relation to one of the five families' underboss.
With Tony dead, Vito as a new top ginny in Jersey backed by New York, the gay club accident/being exposed by his African-American goomah, in parallel to D'Amatos situation; Sil, Paulie and Carlo, all being top echelon trigger happy enforcers, they would've whacked Vito and tell Phil to suck go a lemon at least. Phil humiliated and eventually undermined by the rest of the Luperazzis, either sent to jail to do another 20 years or forced to retire and a big rearrangement in their family with the zips on the top just like what happened to the Gambinos in 2000s.
I might be overthinking, but with this really fits perfect with the real Cosa Nostra events analogy in late 90s to mid 2000s.

They’re the Luccheses. Gotti (Gambino), Gigante (Genovese), Massino (Bonnano), and Joe Colombo are all mentioned and all would’ve reigned while Carmine was boss. Vic Amuso, Tony Ducks, and Gaspipe Casso are never mentioned. What I imagine happened was Carmine Sr’s father took over after Tommy Lucchese died and the family was renamed like the Colombo’s were after Profaci
No because tony says they have 200 soldiers, so that's either Gambino or Genovese. Luccheses are much smaller

I’ve heard that but that’s probably false as meadow includes the luccheses in her rant about the mob, what she doesn’t include is genovese which I think would accurately represent the lupertazzi family
@@johnnyboycamm 😂 what a strange thing to base it on. Also it isn't Lucchese or Genovese because those families have crews that are part of their family....meaning Tony would only be a capo. He's boss of a small family that works closely with a large NY family. Look up John Gotti and John Riggi of the Decavalcante family. Also in 2015 a Decav capo was recorded on a wiretap saying that they run under the Gambinos

I've always just assumed they were replacements of the Luchese's since Henry Hill is basically the only reference to that family in the whole show, whereas most other families and important events surrounding them have been referenced, not leaving a lot of room for Carmine and the other guys to be involved too.
You're likely 100% right about the Gambino parallel, despite Johnny Sack referencing the Castellano hit in season 4.
I think the writers probably saw that they didn't need to deal with the other families, so having the Lupertazzi's be *mostly* Gambino with some Luchese spiced in was acceptable.

Strictly speaking from the show's perspective...
I always thought that the NY mob was just as unstable as the Jersey crew. Just like how Jersey had their own "unstables" like Chris, Richie and Feech (and honestly, many others with the exception of the old-school soldiers like Sil, Gigi and Patsy), NY also had Phil and Johnny. It is just that NY was still superior to Jersey due to sheer size and numbers.
But I guess the show would not have been so interesting if we had bosses far more stable like Carmine or Jackie Sr, so who knows.
What brought the decline?
The likes of Tony and Chris. The hotheads who were clearly way too emotional to think about the family rather than themselves. It is exactly what that former Genovese soldier on T.V. said, "you know the golden age, the heyday of the mob? It's gone, and they all have themselves to blame."@@nurkenrustem6044

You'd think their be a power vacuum but the opposite occurred because all fbi teams designed to focus on each family combined their effort to crush one family. Which is what happen to Joe Massino when he revived the bannanoo family. There's no stability.

I think its mostly based on the Lucchese Family. People seriously underestimate their imterests in Jersey, and theyre a mostly Brooklyn, Bronx based and Jersey crews.
Tony also mentions both Gotti and Sammy the bull. When paulie tells him about the rat they mention Sammy and Tony sticks to back to the uppity guys he played Golf with. The Colombos and Genovese family inspired to a lesser extent.
In the show they mention how unstable the luppratazzi family for years which make me believe it's the Lucchese family under Vics and Cassos reign the family was unstable for close to 20yrs no family was as unstable as them

The Luchese Family are the only ones I can’t remember being name-dropped in the Sopranos (name-dropped as in the family name mentioned or a major member mention).

I'm going to guess the writers drew from many sources of inspiration, and then started shuffling personalities, locations and allegiances, so no one would truly be able to say ''this character is really....'', and thus potentially winding up causing offence with an unflattering portrayal, and then waking up with a horse's head next to them 👍👍👍👍
I could actually see Sac and Gravano being more similar. Gravano was known for being more involved in legit businesses and not involved so much with typical vices in the life like gambling chasing women.
I think it was a stand in for either the Lucchese Family who still had a NJ crew or two in the 2000's and probably today. Or the Genovese Family. I am not sure a family like the Genovese and as powerful as them would trifle so much about their business dealings with the North Jersey Family though. It definitely isn't the Colombo's or Gambino's because they are referenced by name during the show. So that leaves Bonanno's, Lucchese, and Genovese.
The only thing that doesn't make sense about them being the Lucchese Family was Tony once saying in season 6 that they had 200 soldiers in their family. The Lucchese Family never had that many made guys even in their heyday so maybe he just meant made button guys and associates combined.
Anyway, its all fictional so I guess it doesnt matter. One of the 5 families would always be stronger overall than Jersey if it came down to a war. But mob wars are usually about taking out key leadership guys and earners and it's not like a war where guys run at each other in a field or something like Braveheart. Lol. So I will vote Lucchese.
The Genovese's have a very large presence in Jersey. Louis "Bobby" Manna the former Consiglierie of the Genovese was a Jersey guy.
I never understood why David Chase made up a crime family. If I remember correctly John Gotti was mentioned, Big Paul was mentioned Henry Hill even though he wasn't a made guy.
Johnny Sack has a 0% chance of being Gotti because Gotti and his sentence were both mentioned earlier in the show
I agree with the comments about Lucchese family connection. At least in the way the fictional family ran their business. With Henry Hill’s testimony, the feds were able to arrest and prosecute Jimmy Burk and Paul Vario over their point shaving schemes with Boston college. And carmine invented it in the fictional world.
Side note, why the hell was this left out of Goodfellas?
It was a 2.5hr movie. They'd have to do a 10 Season x 15 Episode series to include all the individual rackets they were in to

I'd say they were more like the bruno family under angelo bruno in philly than the gambino's under gotti.
Carmine Sr kept everything quiet and profitable by mediating situations and using violence sparingly.
Johnny Sack was more like Phil Testa in that he tried to avoid a war by offering concessions too opposing forces within the family, but Phil Leotardo was exactly like Nicky Scarfo in that he had a napoleon complex and a gigantic chip on his shoulder that propelled his paranoia and led too a destructive war that enveloped both his family and the family in jersey.
The Genovese have a whole faction based in jersey definitely had a stronger presence in New Jersey than luchesse family.

Why your videos getting so short =/
We hear early on that Jersey is locked in with at least one other family. We just don't see it, but that means nothing on this show. We don't even see most of the members of the Jersey family, there's a lot we don't see cause it's irrelevant to the story.
If anybody was a Gotti type character, it would be Doc Santoro. He's flashy, arrogant, and a street guy. The fact that he gets whacked kinda ruins the comparison though.

If something is obvious, then it's obvious and it's not lazy to look at what's obvious and say "okay, that's obvious" if you're looking at something trying to come up with an answer such as in this case and you have to grasp at straws or bend and twist things to try to make the other thing fit, then chances are it's the more obvious thing. Example, like with Fallout, being that Nuka Cola looks and sounds a lot like Coca-Cola, I would have a very hard time trying to make it seem that the idea didn't come from Coca-Cola or at least they weren't inspired by it yet if I say it's actually inspired by Mountain Dew, unless someone told me specifically that was actually responsible for that,(who was the creator of it)and everything else was a coincidence, because it's so obvious that it came from Coca-Cola, then I would be wrong, no matter how much I wanted it to be from Mountain Dew. I don't really care which family they were based off of and I'm watching this video simply because I like watching stuff about The Sopranos. I noticed you had said that some people were thinking that the obvious thing was the thing and I didn't know if anyone had ever made you aware of what I just told you. Some things are opinion and theory, like in this video and some things are simply the truth and the only person, unless he told someone, that could tell you for sure it was based off of whomever would be the man that made it or possibly someone he knew that he told alon LOL something along those lines.
Anyway.....$4 dollars a pound.
Because its a TV series a fiction, there is no need to link them to one family and even if you do you can still take inspirations from others or even from other parts of the world if it makes for interesting story, and it would be _boring_ if it was exactly the same.

In the 1996 Gotti movie, Johnny Sack is clearly seen as one of the Gambino capos at the meeting where Gotti ascends the throne after the Castellano hit. What is he doing there? Is he stupid?

Butch definitely has Sammy the Bull vibes, both even being short & stocky. I don’t see Phil as Gotti: he’s humorless, avoids publicity, doesn’t dress particularly well, & surely lacks the daring & imagination to whack his boss & take over. Pining for the old days, Phil is perhaps more like Mr. Neil, which would make Johnny Sack a more effective version of Pope Castellano, what with the sprawling mansion with its “great room,” & interests in legit businesses.
