The Sopranos is a classic mob drama which follows the life of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano. As a boss, Tony has many underlings working for him - capos, soldiers, associates and his consigliere - and he also has many connections outside of his family, such as the New York Lupertazzi crime family, run by the pragmatic Carmine Sr.
Tony is close friends with Carmine’s underboss Johnny Sack, who’s also a pragmatist. However, Johnny’s weakness is his love for his wife, Ginny Sack, who he loves dearly and never cheats on. When he learns that one of Tony’s captains, Ralph Cifaretto, made a fat joke about Ginny he is infuriated, and storms his way to Carmine, wanting for him to sanction a hit on Ralph. Ralph is in charge of Jersey’s Esplanade construction racket, a highly profitable skim which could get messed up if Ralph was to suddenly disappear.

Carmine was by far the best boss in the entire show. He was level headed and focused.

I love that little pause he gives Johnny, takes a sip of his cappuccino and carefully places his cup down, and the "there are millions of dollars at stake.." like he totally calculated the whole situation and took in all factors and gave his decision, but still stated it respectful but firm.
Carmine was a very good boss. Even tho in his old age he was sometimes a little bit silly.

For me, one of the best scenes was the phone call with Carmine Luppertazzi and Tony S when discussing the hit on John. The writing of this 1 minute scene is amazing and played brilliantly by both actors.
TS: "Hello?"
CL: "It's me....what were you still asleep"
TS: "No, I was errrr..........doing something"
CL: "I took John to dinner last night....Ralph's got a big problem, kid!"
TS: "I thought you squashed it"
CL: "I did....problem is I don't know if John is hearing me"
TS: "So what you gonna do about it?"
CL: "Me? Nothing!"
TS: "What does that mean?"
CL: "I didn't say nothing..................We share the Esplanade, Tony! I don't want that apple cart upset"
TS: "Yeah, then somebody should do something about that"
CL: "I appreciate your thoughts............................................................."
TS: "You saying what I think you are saying?"......................................
CL: "I didn't say nothing..........................................................Alright then I'll talk to you" - Hangs up
Every pause, and there are many in this scene, carry so much emphasis and meaning. It is one of the many reasons why I love the Soprano's so much! Unbelieveable writing, direction and even when nothing is said can convey so much! I miss this show!
I should of also added, thank you for making these videos and bringing back so many fond memories of The Soprano's. It is intelligent content like yours that stopped me watching the BBC and main stream TV (I think you are English so have gambled that you will get that reference). Your videos on the Wire are also excellent and is another of my favourite TV shows. I hope you don't mind me asking but what other shows would you like to cover and analyse in the future?

The disbelief surrounding Ralph’s (non-existent) sexual attraction to Ginny is kind of funny. Janice wasn’t exactly a ballerina.
I'm with you on both points, but the woman who played Ginny was such a sweetheart , it did hurt a little them making fun of her . And Aida has aged incredibly well , still no blackswan contender though .

That “Dons don’t wear shorts” line is supposedly from some real world feedback from mobsters.
1:39 Michael Imperioli said that James Gandolfini actually got an anonymous phone call one night telling him he was doing a good job, but that a don never wears shorts. I guess they worked that into the script.
That is incredible. So awesome they used that. Also not surprised at all. The Sopranos is a masterpiece

These breakdowns are great and show that the show has aged like fine wine when so much happens in the scene and you can take it two or three different ways and they all make sense. If I had to request another breakdown, I would say the sit down between Jersey and New York over Ralph hit.

I always loved the scene when Johnny went to Carmine to get permission to have Ralph whacked over the joke and how even after he explained the joke Carmine still didn't give a S**T 😂😂 he was all business never became emotional it was always about the $$$

To be fair if I were Sack I would still be upset about the joke, but I would simply embarrass Ralph by calling him out in front of everybody or asking for a public apology. Having him killed is absolutely insane, people think the mafia just wants to go around killing everybody but it's really about money at the end of the day, and people are normally only killed for serious reasons.
Spot on comment. No way a Capo can take that sort of thing, and make a beef, and come away empty handed. Once John showed how upset he was he had to go all the way. If he came to Big Carmine in good faith and accepted his judgement then he would have satisfied honor. The sit down made it worse cause he wasn’t prepared to accept the result
Sadly based on what former mafiosos have said in their own experience while this situation is definitely dramatized it’s not impossible for hits to be called for over petty matters leading to sit downs and de-escalations.

Making a hurtful remark is not a capital offence, it would most likely result in a sit down and a tax.

For many of us less sophisticated types this would call for a beatdown at least. In any case there are many cases, even recent ones, for even senior Mafiosi being killed for insulting remarks. "Wild Bill" Cuttello, a capo and major earner for the Colombo's was murdered around 2000 for off handedly making a disparaging remark about the boss Persico's ability to handle running the Family from prison. Something like "the old fart". Michael Franzese tells about being prevented from killing another made guy when he was just starting for insulting his mother. It was a serious matter. I've seen serious beatings resulting from guys making fat jokes about somebody's girlfriend. This isn't your middle or upper class college graduate world. Lots of people don't operate by your rules. By circumstance I've had to live in several different economic levels during my life. One thing I learned, which reinforced lessons drilled into me by my immigrant grandparents, is that poor people are generally far more polite anong themselves than rich folks. Being rude can get you hurt. I'm always amused by my more properous friends who say things to, and accept remarks from, their acquaintances that would get them seriously hurt in other environments or force them to retaliate with violence.

Johnny sac was no.2 in one of the biggest"families"in the country, how dare someone in that"pygmy thing in Jersey"make fun of him or anything around him. Now had he explained it like that to Carmine I believed he probably would have backed him.
Nah. Carmine made it clear from the beginning the Esplanade deal was worth too much to fritter away because of an insult. Johnny always took things too personal over business and making money.

I saw something once where one of the series's writers and Michael Imperioli both said Carmine Lupertazzi Sr was inspired in part by Carlo Gambino since he was the Mafia anomaly- died a free man instead of dying in prison, and of natural causes instead of a mob hit

Anyway coming out and who pulled up in a Bentley blacked out Windows he didn't go in he was meeting His girlfriend Dee she was driving a range rover. The Reason I remember it so we'll was I was only out of portlaoise prison and it was a few day after he lost his head and fucked the dolly true the bus window. Anyway when he got out my girlfriend started calling him. The was only me her and me daughter I said leave him be he is after having a fucked up weekend I think he heard me but the was this little kid was star struck just standing there mouth open. When he was getting back into the Bentley he walked over to the kid took a selfie 🤳 the kid was still in shock when we were driving out but in my rear view mirror all I could see was Conor in the back seat lighting up a big blunt. Dublin is not that bid with out doubt I will bump into him again. Well there you are I did bump into him but I let it go because of the week he had. Plus iv see 2 time going in and coming out of straight blast gym. Again no one borders him it's that thing in Ireland. You never to big to fail. Cheers 👍🇮🇪

Also this whole outburst by Johnny really foreshadows his later drama when he actually does become boss. It's a bit like how Marc Antony was portrayed next to Caesar in HBO's Rome.

Johnny couldnt take the money because everyone knows about the joke and if he only taxes ralph it makes it look to everyone else that john values money more than his wifes honor. Like he might not even care but is just using the insult to get a bunch of money.

John invited Ralf into his home around his family and for Ralf to talk that kinda shit behind his back, johnny felt betrayed as if Ralf was playing him all along and thinking these things and much worse about him and his family. It's also true that it came down to Johnny's ego as well because johnny is usually the one playing people, so being played like that will hurt so much more
And let's be fair - John only schmoozed up to Ralph cuz he thought he'd be able to play him the same way he did Paulie. Honestly, the way he, as a higher up in an outside rival family started inserting himself in their scene, it'd be more remarkable if he wasn't being insulted by everyone behind his back

As levelheaded as Carmine is, it begs the question: how would Carmine react if he were in Johnny's shoes (if his wife was insulted instead)?
Johnny Sack is an anomaly when it comes to his relationship with his wife, mobsters tend to cheat a lot. Carmine Sr. would probably forget it.
It wouldn't happen as he would have already left his wife if she had gotten that big.

Had Johnny been willing to be sneaky about getting revenge on Ralph, he could have went to Tony and revealed that he was trying to switch families. Explain to Tony that Ralph was in the habit of revealing inside information on a regular basis. It might not have been enough to get him clipped, but it surely wouldn't make life easy for him going forward.
Problem is that could have fucked up what he had with Paulie. If Paulie sees sack's willing to sell out Ralph he might stop talking.
I feel you really got in the heads of all characters here. Great analysis all around. Kudos.
(I gotta add that I have always been a great fan of the Johnny Sack character. Barring how feisty he could get over his family he was just as levelheaded as Carmine.)

Next, you should do one on Paulie’s ambiguity around Tony toward the end of the show, and/or whether or not Dr. Melfi was right to let him go.
To be fair, Melfi shouldn't have had him in the first place, especially when she knew almost from the start that he was in the Mafia; she herself admitted that she kept him in her orbit because the vicarious thrill of his existence added something to her life, in much the same way her character in "Goodfellas" married a Mob associate for the same reason.
In the end she finally realized, accepted, and was willing to move past this unhealthy and unproductive relationship because as she herself admitted "what's my goal here, to make you a better, more well-adjusted gangster?".
Honestly, her entire angle should've been dumped a season or two earlier when Tony started becoming a lot more malignant and his panic attacks stopped really being an element of his personality.

When Carmine told Johnny Sack told get tf over it right in front of Tony and Silvio i was stunned dude was a gangster for real.
Personally, I don't think any of Carmine's behavior has anything to do with Ginny's weight, despite what could be going on inside his head. It would just be non-beneficial for him to be expressing anything like that to Johnny. I think the reason Carmine expresses disbelief about Ralph wanting to sleep with Ginny is because Johnny is here making a beef about an insult. If Ralph wanted to sleep with Ginny, then obviously Johnny would be making a beef about that instead. So Carmine reacts that way to force Johnny to admit that this isn't as big of a deal.

I always like to compare Carmine Sr to Paul Castellano and Johnny Sack as John Gotti, obviously both have certain things in common like Carmine and Paul were more business oriented bosses, both made massive fortunes with construction, and both had one of their underlings attempt a plot to kill them but the difference is Carmine died of natural causes but Paul didn’t. For Johnny sack obviously the hair style, the fancy suits (namely Brioni suits) and also plotting to kill their boss. But I think the most thing in coming Johnny Sack and Gotti has in common was they both died in prison from cancer

You know something? I remember Pauly making a crack about Ginny's weight long before Ralph did. Season 3, episode 4: EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH. This was the episode when John & Ginny moved to Jersey. The guys were at The Bing discussing the move and Pauly says, "Ginny Sacramoni, what she needs is her own zip code." Then Gigi Cestone jokingly says, "Jersey's a small state. She moves here she could tip it over." A few more joke were told by everyone in the room, including Tony. At any rate, the fat jokes about Ginny started long before the joke Ralph made that caused all the chaos.

The problem I always had with Ralph’s entire storyline was that they kept saying he was bringing in a lot of money. That he was really good at business. He was this valuable earner. But we never saw that. We saw a lot of Ralph and every time we saw him, he was just being a problem, provoking people, hurting and injuring people, killing people… there was no upside to his being around. And they never demonstrated his business acumen or his money making potential or anything that he did that anyone else couldn’t have been doing. That was a major flaw because the audience could not see his worth. All I ever saw of Ralph was someone who could and should be easily killed off. I never felt the conflict that the show kept assuring me was there.

Johnny was doing exactly what Phil wanted to do regarding Vito. He wanted to demonstrate his stature and force in NJ. If he had his way with Ralph, he would have established himself as the almighty NY boss. But lucky for Ralph, things didn't go his way. He already looks down on the Sopranos family even though he socializes with them frequently. (parties, dinners, poker games, etc) But he didn't end his revenge there, he keeps needling Tony with the construction jobs, real estate deals, all the knick knack stuff until he went to prison. Unique friend&villain character, very well written and executed.
I think it was something that was repealed from when Carmine Sr. Said it & Phil heard about it & used it to belittle the soprano family in the eyes of his crew
If Tony can kill Ralph over a horse then Johnny Sack should have been allowed to have killed Ralph over the wife joke.... Johnny should have just taken him out quietly.
