Michael hit the nail on the head as to why the reason the Sopranos was so successful which was the characters were relatable. Not necessarily relatable because of the mob life but because of the very human psychological emotions and feelings the characters endured. What makes the show so brilliant and still watchable to this day is its devotion to character development first, plot driven second.
You misunderstood one part of it. The "mystery" person that relayed the joke to Johnny was Paulie, he was trying to build a friendship with Johnny so he could change over to the NY family, but he was doing it secretly. That's who Tony was telling him to give up by name. Ralph was the one being accused of making the joke from the very beginning.
@@exilovac8690 Yeah I get the vibe that none of the real ex mobsters actually watched the Sopranos attentively or fully as it deserves. But I also think maybe that's part of why the show is so good, because it's examining mobsters in a way that they cannot percieve themselves.
The actor who played "Corrado" (I don't know his name, sorry) also played in Godfather 2 in '74 and he is still alive. Maybe you will make an interview with him. He is my favorite actor from the Sopranos.
Johnny messed up up because he has a secret source of information on the Soprano Family from Paulie, and by blowing up over the Ginny comment, he was inadvertently revealing the fact that he has a source. He didn't want to give up who it was, that's why he was being so difficult at the sit-down, and Tony called him out on it.

Mike, another great video but I have a few small critiques. 1. Jonny sack was Carmines underboss, not a capo. This might explain why Jonny sack was able to be as bold as he was in the sit down and could be why he felt so disrespected because as underboss he felt he should be treated with greater respect. 2. The question was never about who made the comment about Ginny. Everyone new Ralph made the comment. The question was where did Jonny sack hear about the joke. Little pauly told pauly in prison about the joke and pauly told John. Tony was trying to figure out who told Jonny About the comment. Everyone understood the comment was made by Ralph. Tony actually confronts pauly about telling John about the joke years later and pauly denies it. Your videos are great! Keep up the good work!
Something to add to your 2nd point: Tony didn't give a shit about the joke. However, he suspected the same individual who told Johnny Sack about the joke was the same one feeding him information about properties Tony was selling and making money from because of the Esplanade project they shared with the Lupertazzi Family. The properties were making more money based on the increased value of the area because of the Esplanade. Tony, due to an arrangement he had with NY over the Esplanade had to kick them in for a percentage of the sales. If they don't hear about it, Tony gets to keep all of the profits. So in the end, Tony's only trying to flush out the gossiper in his Family because he's losing money.

While all the actors did a great job on this show, Vincent Curatola who played Johnny Sack was one of my favorites. He really had the nuances of being a gangster down because he used to work at a restaurant frequented by them.

Sack was alot better at being an underboss and went a little nuts when he became an actual boss. The best boss in this series is Carmine, albeit he created alot of chaos by not naming a successor before he died.
What I loved about the Sopranos was that it wasn't a stereotypical gangster series. It was a life and family drama that anyone could relate to. I admit I've changed some of my ways of dealing with people after viewing and understanding that series. That show was and still is very powerful.
i beg to differ. The black gangstas were all stereotypical for the 90s. The way they held the gun, to their attitude, to their tone and just what they wore. I mean its like late 80s and early 90s gangstas. And they all made huge mistakes which in real life even at that time they were ones who got away with crimes.
Thats exactly why Sopranos is one of the greatest shows ever. The little details, funny things that could become an ultimate issue Legendary show. Johnny did actually tell them who allegedly insulted his wife from the start. The only thing he refused to do was tell them who told him about it. I imagine it still wouldn’t make a difference though. But anyway thanks for this video, it’s one of my favourite episodes of the sopranos and always love to hear your input. Johnny Sack was one of the greatest characters on the show imo.
Yeah, I loved Johnny Sack. He wasn't a bad person, he was just ruthless when occasions called for it, and there were definitely occasions that called for it. That Ralph character deserved everything he got and then some. The remark was just the least of it. He also beat a pregnant woman to death, he made it a point to corrupt Jackie Aprile's son, he tried to "educate" him to join "that life", and Jackie Jr got killed as an indirect result of listening to Ralph. He was bad news all around and a liability to both families. He should've been dealt with at that meeting and the rest of it could've been avoided.
Tony would have been happy to give him Ralph, if Johnny Sack would have given up the informant (who was Pauly Walnuts.) Everybody hated Ralph, but Tony couldn't just let John flex on his family without getting something back in return.

Exactly everyone at the table and Corrado also, knew who made the remark. The main sticking point was who told Johnny Sack the the comment was made. That's one thing I'll never understand if Johnny Sack loved his wife so much then why didn't he give up Paulie?

The reason you think you remember "Johnny sending paulie things in prison" is due to that scene when john takes paulie to lunch right after paulie gets out of jail. Johnny asks "hows the mouse?" Paulie says something to the effect of "delicious. The shit you miss when your inside, there was a week where i woulda killed for some good and plenty's" johnny says "you shoulda told me, i woulda sent you some". Johnny did however pick up the phone when Paulie called collect. Yea he was playing paulie for quite a while.
The irony that wasn't lost on me is that nearly everyone in that sitdown except John Sach himself heard what Ralphie said because they were there and they all laughed at it. LOL!

Michael, first off super happy you finished The Soprano's. Personally its my favorite TV show ever (and theres a long list of ones I enjoy). Love your take on this. Always good to know what movies and or shows portray the life correctly. Makes shows like The Soprano's that much better when you know that its mostly authentic! My dad was a drug addict for 30 years, (heroin mostly), never been involved in anything "organized", was around some shady people back in the day and got himself into some problems over dealing and smuggling here and there and did some time in prison but nothing major. just like in your case it is a miracle the dude is even alive when everyone around him including his brothers and sister was either dead, mourned loved ones, or lost their minds. and just like you he's a fantastic speaker. got clean 15 years ago when i was like 10 (he's 63 now) and ever since he got clean listening to him telling me stories about his previous life's mischiefs has been treasured hobby of mine. Other then my dad you are the second old ex crook i like hearing stories from. i'm mostly into gaming when it comes to watching youtube videos but I've been binge watching your videos for like a month now. I AM HOOKED. keep it going sir. you are amazing.
To successfully negotiate you have to be prepared, know your adversary and bring something to the table. It's a lot easier these days to research a person or company for example when going for a job. What you know about the other person will give you the upper hand even if you only hold that one card. This was a great video on the subtleties of negotiation.
I love the scene in the Weight where Carmine is sipping coffee while Johnny Sack is ranting and raving about what should be done about Ralph's remark. Tony Lipp played old school boss Carmine brilliantly!

They knew the comment had been made by Ralph already - what they were asking Johnny Sack to do was reveal his SOURCE. ie 'Who in my Family told you this was said, lets bring him in here!" - Johnny Sack naturally doesn't want to reveal that Paulie has been gossiping as that burns his information line into the Soprano family, so Johnny Sack's whole case falls apart because he won't reveal Paulie has been talking. Tony figures it out near the end of the final season that it was Paulie who was talking, he confronts Paulie about it in a friendly way, but Paulie stubborn as ever, continues to lie and deny it was him.
Your description of the scene is off. Johnny Sack isn't refusing to say who said the thing -- the complaint is known to be about Ralph from the beginning. He's refusing to say how he found out about it (he heard it from Paulie).
I was always blown away that Johnny got up from the table that abruptly myself, and nobody ever talked about it. I just brushed it off. Nice to see someone else caught that. That was a big take away.
My psychologist was Sicilian from Sicily. One time this other patient in the waiting room was getting emotional. He just said, "Relax," with calm confidence and finality. And that was that.
The sopranos is probably the best TV series ever made. The casting was perfect from Tony to Pauline, Silvio, Bobby, Phil leotardo, the physopath Ralph, hard man Richie and one of my favourites Johnny sac played by Vincent curatola,, Michael if you get chance have a listen to some of Vincents you tube interviews. Most of the cast already knew each other and had friends in that life

The writing is superb, you can really imagine guys talking like that, however at the I was not sure if it was a comedy as some things were just too funny.. I mean real life is funny too.

Good analysis. I’ve been learning over the past 20 years, to pick my words with extreme care. I used to say things that would unintentionally hurt my friends, and no one would tell me. Once someone starts at two, I’ll try to learn. Not being able to see facial expressions and body language quiz me as a disadvantage, but I’ve got some pretty good at hearing things in silence as well as words. I had never intended to watch the Sopranos, but I think I may change my mind. We will everyone.

He was protecting Paulie, not trying to deny that it was Ralph who said it. It was not Ralph that they wanted to bring in, it was Paulie, to collaborate his story, in which case they would give him Ralph on a silver platter. That's why Tony said something to the effect of "somebody in my crew is telling you these things, and you don't wanna give me the name? I should be making the beef here", to which Junior says "my nephew's right".
Great scene, and Junior is effortlessly hilarious, as always. I remember questioning them using the phone, but I just went with it because Sopranos is so incredible it earns the occasional pass for things like that. And the metaphor of Junior being on the outside while Tony was the real boss kinda made up for it.

I could listen to this guy talk about the sopranos all day! There's so many great moments to cover! I mean, those of us who know about Ralph know this is just one of MANY incidents Ralph is involved with. Honestly, I'd love to hear more of Michael's thoughts on Ralph. When you have to negotiate like your very life depends on it really does sharpen those kinds of skills for real life. It also shows how good a negotiator you have to be to have survived the life in the first place.

There was never really a question about who made the remark, it was more about if Johnny wasn't there, how is so sure it's true. It's Paulie who was there to hear it and told Johnny about it. Johnny refused to give him up, although Tony always suspected it was Paulie, and it almost cost him his life later in the show.

The main problem is if it was said, how does John know and that he won't telll him who. I really think it made John look bad- that he wants whack someone over hearsay, and won't let another crew who among them is writing an article for the school paper.
One of the best parts of that sitdown was when Johnny raises his voice at Carmine, "Again with the money?!" and Carmine says, almost as if John doesn't understand what it's all about, "Yeah. Again with the money. So either name a price or get over it."

Johnny Sac, not taking a cash settlement that Carmine wanted, caused Carmine to call Tony and basically put a contract on Johnny. Johnny was only saved when he agreed to accept Ralph's apology.

I’m late with this Mike, but remember that after Johnny went on to do this, Carmine would later call Tony giving him hints that Johnny was disrespectful and would likely to continue with his rage, and if TONY were to do something about it (whacking Johnny) prior to that, Carmine wouldn’t mind since there was money to be made at the end of the day.
A Netflix series that I enjoyed was Bad Blood about the Rizzuto’s in Canada. Guess they were associated with Bonanno’s? You probably don’t buy into the notion that they are the “sixth family”, neither do I, but the mob related violence in Montreal and other parts of Canada that has taken place from 2000-present looks a lot like NYC during your time with the mob. I looked it up, a lot of the hits that they show in the series actually took place. Montreal must be super corrupt
It's worth noting that a lot of that mob violence in Canada is actually Ndrangheta infighting rather than Mafia infighting. Some of the Ndrangheta in Canada appears to be merged with the Buffalo Mafia. The Mafia/Cosa Nostra are separate and distinct from the Calabrian Ndrangheta. Different organizations, similar activities although the Ndrangheta are far more heavily involved in international drug draficking than the CN.
@Chris Curcio there is a very good reason for that - actual family via blood relatives making up the membership of various Ndrangheta groups whereas Cosa Nostra do not exclusively recruit blood relatives, the various Ndrangheta groups recruit their own family members and start bringing them in as children. Bloodkin are less likely to turn informant than mere friends and non-family.
You do have to admire Johnny's devotion to his wife. Yes, she was "a little overweight" which to most men is really unattractive but Johnny still stood behind her and was devoted to her. He didn't even have a goomah. To me that's a real man. He took "for better or worse" to heart. Bravo to that.
Mike, I think Oz often gets overlooked as a series. It was really the show that laid the groundwork for sopranos and the first time we ever saw something like that on TV. As someone that has so much experience with the prison system it could bea good review from you. There's even mob characters and all of that.
OZ didn’t age very well. It has a lot of nonsensical plots and things that occur. For example the accelerated age pill episode. I will say it did lay out the groundwork for a cable television series. Plus it has pretty much every HBO regular in it.

I also think one of the shows' great strengths was the amount of dark humour. The scene with the Waiter,Paulie, and Chrissy is a great example.

Mike, another great video but I have a few small critiques.
1. Jonny sack was Carmines underboss, not a capo. This might explain why Jonny sack was able to be as bold as he was in the sit down and could be why he felt so disrespected because as underboss he felt he should be treated with greater respect.
2. The question was never about who made the comment about Ginny. Everyone new Ralph made the comment. The question was where did Jonny sack hear about the joke. Little pauly told pauly in prison about the joke and pauly told John. Tony was trying to figure out who told Jonny About the comment. Everyone understood the comment was made by Ralph. Tony actually confronts pauly about telling John about the joke years later and pauly denies it.

Something to add to your 2nd point: Tony didn't give a shit about the joke. However, he suspected the same individual who told Johnny Sack about the joke was the same one feeding him information about properties Tony was selling and making money from because of the Esplanade project they shared with the Lupertazzi Family. The properties were making more money based on the increased value of the area because of the Esplanade. Tony, due to an arrangement he had with NY over the Esplanade had to kick them in for a percentage of the sales. If they don't hear about it, Tony gets to keep all of the profits. So in the end, Tony's only trying to flush out the gossiper in his Family because he's losing money.
The context is also that Johnny's behaviour led to Carmine sanctioning a hit against John

While all the actors did a great job on this show, Vincent Curatola who played Johnny Sack was one of my favorites. He really had the nuances of being a gangster down because he used to work at a restaurant frequented by them.
Not only that, from my understanding he’s actually a singer, and that was his first role as an actor.
Johnny was a better Boss than Tony.

Sack was alot better at being an underboss and went a little nuts when he became an actual boss. What I loved about the Sopranos was that it wasn't a stereotypical gangster series. It was a life and family drama that anyone could relate to. I admit I've changed some of my ways of dealing with people after viewing and understanding that series. That show was and still is very powerful.
That's why the title was BRILLIANT. The Sopranos--my dysfunctional family. The Sopranos--my dysfunctional crime family.
i beg to differ. The black gangstas were all stereotypical for the 90s. The way they held the gun, to their attitude, to their tone and just what they wore. I mean its like late 80s and early 90s gangstas. And they all made huge mistakes which in real life even at that time they were ones who got away with crimes.

Johnny did actually tell them who allegedly insulted his wife from the start. The only thing he refused to do was tell them who told him about it. I imagine it still wouldn’t make a difference though. But anyway thanks for this video, it’s one of my favourite episodes of the sopranos and always love to hear your input. Johnny Sack was one of the greatest characters on the show imo.
Yeah, I loved Johnny Sack. He wasn't a bad person, he was just ruthless when occasions called for it, and there were definitely occasions that called for it. That Ralph character deserved everything he got and then some. The remark was just the least of it. He also beat a pregnant woman to death, he made it a point to corrupt Jackie Aprile's son, he tried to "educate" him to join "that life", and Jackie Jr got killed as an indirect result of listening to Ralph. He was bad news all around and a liability to both families. He should've been dealt with at that meeting and the rest of it could've been avoided.

The reason you think you remember "Johnny sending paulie things in prison" is due to that scene when john takes paulie to lunch right after paulie gets out of jail. Johnny asks "hows the mouse?" Paulie says something to the effect of "delicious. The shit you miss when your inside, there was a week where i woulda killed for some good and plenty's" johnny says "you shoulda told me, i woulda sent you some". Johnny did however pick up the phone when Paulie called collect. Yea he was playing paulie for quite a while.
The irony that wasn't lost on me is that nearly everyone in that sitdown except John Sach himself heard what Ralphie said because they were there and they all laughed at it. LOL!

Always good to know what movies and or shows portray the life correctly. Makes shows like The Soprano's that much better when you know that its mostly authentic! For the sake of dramatics and TV, obviously its not all accurate, but I would have to imagine we all knew that before. It is good to know that they got a lot of things right though!

My dad was a drug addict for 30 years, (heroin mostly), never been involved in anything "organized", was around some shady people back in the day and got himself into some problems over dealing and smuggling here and there and did some time in prison but nothing major. just like in your case it is a miracle the dude is even alive when everyone around him including his brothers and sister was either dead, mourned loved ones, or lost their minds. and just like you he's a fantastic speaker. got clean 15 years ago when i was like 10 (he's 63 now) and ever since he got clean listening to him telling me stories about his previous life's mischiefs has been treasured hobby of mine.
Other then my dad you are the second old ex crook i like hearing stories from.

To successfully negotiate you have to be prepared, know your adversary and bring something to the table. It's a lot easier these days to research a person or company for example when going for a job. What you know about the other person will give you the upper hand even if you only hold that one card. This was a great video on the subtleties of negotiation.
I love the scene in the Weight where Carmine is sipping coffee while Johnny Sack is ranting and raving about what should be done about Ralph's remark. Tony Lipp played old school boss Carmine brilliantly!

They knew the comment had been made by Ralph already - what they were asking Johnny Sack to do was reveal his SOURCE. ie 'Who in my Family told you this was said, lets bring him in here!" - Johnny Sack naturally doesn't want to reveal that Paulie has been gossiping as that burns his information line into the Soprano family, so Johnny Sack's whole case falls apart because he won't reveal Paulie has been talking. Tony figures it out near the end of the final season that it was Paulie who was talking, he confronts Paulie about it in a friendly way, but Paulie stubborn as ever, continues to lie and deny it was him.

Your description of the scene is off. Johnny Sack isn't refusing to say who said the thing -- the complaint is known to be about Ralph from the beginning. He's refusing to say how he found out about it (he heard it from Paulie).

The sopranos is probably the best TV series ever made. The casting was perfect from Tony to Pauline, Silvio, Bobby, Phil leotardo, the physopath Ralph, hard man Richie and one of my favourites Johnny sac played by Vincent curatola,, Michael if you get chance have a listen to some of Vincents you tube interviews. Most of the cast already knew each other and had friends in that life

Good analysis. I’ve been learning over the past 20 years, to pick my words with extreme care. I used to say things that would unintentionally hurt my friends, and no one would tell me. Once someone starts at two, I’ll try to learn. Not being able to see facial expressions and body language quiz me as a disadvantage, but I’ve got some pretty good at hearing things in silence as well as words.
I had never intended to watch the Sopranos, but I think I may change my mind.

You misunderstood the scene. It's not that Sacks didn't wanna say who made the Joke (i.e. Ralph), it's that he didn't wanna say who told him that Ralph made the joke (i.e. Paulie). He was protecting Paulie, not trying to deny that it was Ralph who said it. It was not Ralph that they wanted to bring in, it was Paulie, to collaborate his story, in which case they would give him Ralph on a silver platter. That's why Tony said something to the effect of "somebody in my crew is telling you these things, and you don't wanna give me the name? I should be making the beef here", to which Junior says "my nephew's right".
Johnny Sack played by Vincent Curatola was an awesome character and an amazing performance that is very underrated even for such an acclaimed show.
Great scene, and Junior is effortlessly hilarious, as always. I remember questioning them using the phone, but I just went with it because Sopranos is so incredible it earns the occasional pass for things like that. And the metaphor of Junior being on the outside while Tony was the real boss kinda made up for it.
Slight error in your explanation of this scene. They all knew Ralph allegedly made the comment regarding Johnny’s wife. They are asking for the source that told Johnny about the remark. The source is Paulie, which Johnny doesn’t want to give up.

There was never really a question about who made the remark, it was more about if Johnny wasn't there, how is so sure it's true. It's Paulie who was there to hear it and told Johnny about it. Johnny refused to give him up, although Tony always suspected it was Paulie, and it almost cost him his life later in the show.
Paulie wasn't there, he was locked up. Little Paulie told him over the phone.

Johnny Sac, not taking a cash settlement that Carmine wanted, caused Carmine to call Tony and basically put a contract on Johnny. Johnny was only saved when he agreed to accept Ralph's apology.

I’m late with this Mike, but remember that after Johnny went on to do this, Carmine would later call Tony giving him hints that Johnny was disrespectful and would likely to continue with his rage, and if TONY were to do something about it (whacking Johnny) prior to that, Carmine wouldn’t mind since there was money to be made at the end of the day.

A Netflix series that I enjoyed was Bad Blood about the Rizzuto’s in Canada. Guess they were associated with Bonanno’s? You probably don’t
buy into the notion that they are the “sixth family”, neither do I, but the mob related violence in Montreal and other parts of Canada that has taken place from 2000-present looks a lot like
NYC during your time with the mob. I looked it up, a lot of the hits that they show in the series actually took place. Montreal must be super corrupt
I would call them the first family honestly … in the late 90s the power of the rixzuto family could rival any of the NY5.
It's worth noting that a lot of that mob violence in Canada is actually Ndrangheta infighting rather than Mafia infighting. Some of the Ndrangheta in Canada appears to be merged with the Buffalo Mafia. The Mafia/Cosa Nostra are separate and distinct from the Calabrian Ndrangheta. Different organizations, similar activities although the Ndrangheta are far more heavily involved in international drug draficking than the CN.

@Chris Curcio there is a very good reason for that - actual family via blood relatives making up the membership of various Ndrangheta groups whereas Cosa Nostra do not exclusively recruit blood relatives, the various Ndrangheta groups recruit their own family members and start bringing them in as children. Bloodkin are less likely to turn informant than mere friends and non-family.
You do have to admire Johnny's devotion to his wife. Yes, she was "a little overweight" which to most men is really unattractive but Johnny still stood behind her and was devoted to her. He didn't even have a goomah. To me that's a real man. He took "for better or worse" to heart. Bravo to that.

Mike, I think Oz often gets overlooked as a series. It was really the show that laid the groundwork for sopranos and the first time we ever saw something like that on TV. As someone that has so much experience with the prison system it could bea good review from you. There's even mob characters and all of that.

Aging pills though. Anything that happened after adebisi died is comically bad.
Oz is an absolutely cracking show but I don't think it bears much resemblance to reality.

OZ didn’t age very well. It has a lot of nonsensical plots and things that occur. For example the accelerated age pill episode. I will say it did lay out the groundwork for a cable television series. Plus it has pretty much every HBO regular in it.
